I had similar running problems with mine, I changed the fuel filter, filter housing, in tank fuel pump and high pressure pump. Replacing these improved the issue, but did not fully fix it. It started and ran fine but didn’t like running under load. it would loose power and stall and then refuse to start for a good 1/2 hour. It turned out that the Fuel was leaking back past the injectors. I replaced the copper injector seals and it starts and runs like a dream now. Love all the vids by the way 👍
I agree, long cranking suggests that the fuel is leaking back and its having to re-prime each time. In this heat glow plugs are a red herring, as they aren't necessary.
Yeah this will be the problem for sure, 99.9% of TD5 starting / running issues are injector seals. Just constantly badly diagnosed / masked by replacing pumps / filter housings, but route cause is almost always the seals!
For it to be pumping more smoke under load, its sucking in fuel. As above said. Injectors are most likely. Failing that, try work out where its coming in from. Maybe oil too? Turbo?
from the way it was smoking and hard starting, I was thinking maybe a compression issue, but it did sound like it was idling fine. Fuel leak down does make sense though based on the hard starting.
Kris, this is probably my favourite vid for ages, I love having an update of how your little self sufficient empire is running, you should do a mini tour monthly to keep us updated about what's growing, what's happening with the livestock, how the power sources are doing, it's an end product of how you live 🙂
I love the fact that your channel is about daily life, and not some over-produced glam show. It's much more relatable, and I enjoy all the vids you put out! I don't envy you the car problems. Every time I decide to tackle a 30 minute job on a vehicle, it takes 6 hrs due to all the hiccups along the way!
Exactly! I've been getting so frustrated with 90% of the content on youtube trying so hard to sell itself. Just exagerations, unnecessary fake personality and drama. Content like this, primitive technology, kappa2700s and rambalac are my favorite because they are so neutral, direct, honest etc.
Agreed. This is REAL content. So much of the internet and content throughout the big sites most often feel inorganic and fake to some degree. I very much appreciate Kris' content.

Hi, have you considered outlining the issues you are experiencing with the defender along with any diagnostic works you have carried out. You likely have a lot of subscribers with mechanical experience who may have useful suggestions. As for this type of video, I personally enjoy most of what you put out including this eclectic type, I’m sure most of your subscribers are the same.

The first thing I thought of when you were describing the vehicle situations was: Great! Now he can get a horse and buggy for back-up to transportation problems. (Breakdowns, fuel shortages, closed roads) Plus a good excuse to build a timber frame horse barn. Fit right in too!
Good to see the update: I suspect a combination of issues with the Landy. You will need all glow plugs working. Air getting into the fuel at the lift pump will not help matters, well spotted (use the proepr tool for the not so quick disconnects). My thoughts are it is primarily a fuel or fuel line pressure issue though. As others have said there could be low compression (worn bores/piston rings, leaky valve seats, head gasket failure, cracked head) all easy enough to check for (I think you were doing a compression check, if low add some oil into the bore (remove glow plug) and recheck if better compression indicates worn bore/rings, if low on adjacent cylinders indicates headgasket failure between the two. White exhaust smoke is usually unburnt/partially burnt fuel caused by inefficient burn (low compression, bad timing) but can also be coolant ingress to the combustion space, blueish smoke is engine oil (worn bores/rings). Black smoke at start usually indicates too much fuel from injector leakdown or fuel control issue, there didn't appear to be black smoke as soon as she started. Injector wiring loom can suffer from faults due to oil ingress, Replace the MAF sensor, check fuel temp sensor (oil in plug, replace wiring). Could be leaking injector seals (copper washers) which will be evidenced as white smoke on startup. Possibly fuel filter issue, always worth checking. Check ECU power and ground, these must be perfect. ODBII diagnostics can be very very helpful in identifying the problems. Worth every penny investing in a good quality used scan tool (one that does proper Land Rover tests). Good luck, I am sure you will get to the bottom of the problem and have very useful an reliable (for a LR) vehicle.
@@arbit3r Could be, agreed the turn over does appear to be rather fast for a diesel. The turn over noise is a quite even sounding for it to be just one or two cylinders at fault so could be general wear across all five - not good news for Chris if this is the case. However, the wear would need to be severe because dynamic compression after fast cranking would probably be enough to kick it into life. Wonder if it starts easily on ether?

I really appreciate seeing all the off-grid maintenance content between the normal project videos! I'm glad you were able to get some content out of the misfortune, and thanks for thinking of your audience when doing all these menial tasks.
Hi Kris. I have a Subaru forester diesel awaiting a decision as to sell/ or not. I love the thing to bits and don't really want to part with it, but if it helps you could borrow it, free gratis until you get the other vehicles sorted. It's taxed and MOT'd until the beginning of September, can tow 1800kg and returns 45mpg if you've a feather foot and might see you through your problems. I live in Pontfadog so let me know if this is of interest.
Thats is really kind of you. I really appreciate the offer. I have all the parts on order for both vehicles so I think I will be back on the road soon. but thanks for your kindness.

We always appreciate the updates, Kris. Whenever they come, I don't think those of us that have been watching for a few years mind of you miss a week. I always figure you've got something going on and you'll get back to us when you can. I can't imagine having your van breaking down on the M5! It's so much fun watching you troubleshoot! Never worry about posting about vehicle issues, it's really interesting. Thanks for the animal updates as well, I'm particularly fond of your kitty. 😊
Kris, my TD5 was the complete opposite! Mechanically, absolutely sound, but the chassis and everything else with it was rotten. Replaced the chassis and the suspension components and she runs beautifully. Quick thing, spend as much money as you can feasibly afford on security for it, ie, new hinges, bonnet cable relocate, alarm relocate, pedal lock, steering wheel lock, tracker. Unfortunately, land rovers are very easily stolen, and they get stripped for parts (I think the defender is in the top 10 stolen car in the UK)
Even though you have a million things going at once and turmoil seems to be around every corner the last few days. You made sure to find time to feed your geese at the normal time. Shows a lot about your character, keep that stuff up my friend your doing great!
Always a great pleasure to see what you and Dot are up to and how life on the homestead is going. Hope you can get your vehicles operating soon and congratulations on your new Land Rover! The life you’ve made is amazing.
Hey Kris, your videos are always really interesting regardless of what you are working on at the time… including engines! That Landi looks really great. I’m sure I’m not the only one who is envious of your incredible knowledge and problem solving skills.
Hi Kris, I love the Landi - it brought back memories of the two that I had, a 1961 short wheelbase Series II that I had for 6 years and then a 1964 series IIa LWB station wagon that I ran four 12 years - both great vehicles and relatively easy to work on - both had 2 1/4 petrol engines. Like you, I did all my own maintenance and that include rebuilding one engine and then an engine swap on the LWB plus fitting a replacement gearbox and clutch. Great vehicles! Hope you enjoy using yours as much as I and my family enjoyed ours. Great video - thanks.
Maybe Dot could host some gardening videos, if she wants to? I'm more into the engineering stuff, personally, but agriculture is an important part of homesteading, so I'm sure it'd be very interesting!
Have not finished the video yet but did want to stress that I have found every video you upload is to be interesting to very interesting, regardless of the subject. I am not into motor vehicles - much less fixing them - yet thoroughly enjoy watching you work on an issue or problem with understandable explanations as you proceed. What you do daily or weekly or monthly is intriguing whether building or fixing or doing daily chores or interacting with the animals or mowing or just walking the property. Kris, please do not apologize for compiling a video about what has consumed your time and efforts even though it does not directly relate to building and maintaining the homestead or your growing hydro business. Your subscribers just want content from you - it is always interesting, educational and engaging. Thank you.
I just find myself watching your videos to see what you are up to, no specific expectations. I always appreciate your demeanor in any of your pursuits.
Always enjoy your videos. Dot has made the gardens beautiful. Such hard work and well worth it. Like your new ride, glad you know how to fix it, but is there anything your don't know how to fix. Your knowledge is so impressive and work ethic is amazing. Love the geese, sheep, chicken and cat. Thanks for sharing.
As much as I look forward to your vids, you can't worry about getting them out on time. Life happens, right? You have your health. Thanks for the update.
sounds like piston rings to me check the glow plugs are working but I suspect that the compression is getting low hence the hard starting and oil in the bores hence the smoke, to check the piston rings with out a tester take off the oil filler cap if there is smoke coming from here and its chuffing like a steam train when it runs then its blow by from worn piston rings or it could be a blown head gasket between cylinder and oilway if you have a diesel compression tester then do a compression test then put an egg cup full of oil down the bore then do the test again if there is significant pressure increase then its the piston rings and not the head gasket if there is no big increase then its the headgasket I hope this helps if you need any advice just message always happy to help
Real life doesn't always follow the timeline you want, we understand. Nice Landy, seems like a good few things to sort and a fair chance of that fixing it.
"The person who did it probably not the best mechanic". That's an understatement. Very diplomatic of you! :D Also, I'm regularly impressed at the power you can get out of a diesel 4 (erm... I mean 5) cylinder. :) With only 4 glow plugs no less! WOW. Interesting engineering. Nice video man! Please keep up the great work!
A true inspiration. I'm sure many people and certainty me (too old now) wished we had done what your doing. I found your channel a few months ago and I am slowly working my way though all your video's, love the hydro stuff. Never give in, what your doing is priceless. good luck and all the very best.
That defender will be a good future candidate for a Kris electric conversion!! There doesn't seem like there's much you can't turn your hand to and it would be a great video series!!
Thanks for the update, Kris, from Omaha, NE, USA. You've experienced three days of 'Murphy's Law', Kris! I feel for you and Dot. I hate vehicle troubles, we all have had to endure them. As for your video content, we enjoy what ever you post, whatever that may be. Tell Dot the garden is looking awesome! Cheers!
Nice looking motor. When I heard you trying to turn it over my first thought was the fuel pump or a fuel issue. It amazes me how people will try and bodge jobs like that. Hopefully you'll get it up and running soon.
I'm always happy to see a new video from you, Kris. When they're slow coming, I go back to the early ones before I discovered your channel. I love all the things you figure out how to do. best of luck.
Hey Kris, I've been wondering where you've been. I just assumed you were busy doing Hydro installs. Sorry to hear about the van, but, the LandRover looks incredible. It looks like other than the starting issue, it's in pretty good shape. It will definitely be perfect for the Hydro Installs, especially when you have to get into back country places for others that are off grid. The garden is looking incredible! Please tell Dot that she's doing an incredible job with the garden this year. Hopefully you'll have a big harvest at the end of the season, enough to carry you through a better part of the winter. Every time I see your property and home, the shop, it makes me want the same kind of setup for my family. Hopefully I'll be able to get land in the next few years, but the economy right now is really making that harder to do. And the cost of property here in Canada is just ridiculous. It's my goal to have an off grid home to raise a family on with my wife. Do almost the same kinds of things as you're doing on the property. The goal being self sufficiency. You were smart to get into the property younger and starting the hydro business now. It will sustain you financially and you can always do other types of homestead trades for others that don't have the experience, knowledge, or time to do things all on their own in an off grid home and property. Hopefully you have the Land Rover running soon and can get back to normal with everything. Thanks for another great video! Keep Safe and Always Inspiring, Matt - Toronto, Canada
Hi Kris, good to see some news from your end! Sorry to hear about the 🚐 van! Defender looks gorgeous, and sure you will get it up and running smoothly 👍🏼 All the best to you and your family ✨💫🌳
I watched this last week. Came back to watch again because I am hopelessly in love with your workshop. It would make a lovely home. I know you are planning on building a home. I've been wondering if you might do a video on your plans for that home? --When there's time. You've been working hard on stuff you need to do in the moment. If you have to fix the car, do a video on fixing the car. Whatever---or put a door on the greenhouse, perhaps. I'll watch it.
Sure hope you get your transportation problems worked out. It can leave you really rather disabled. Garden is looking great. It’s always so good to get enough garden produce to last and looks like Dot is doing a fantastic job
Nice looking Defender Kris. Someone has spent alot of money / time on it through its years with all the bolt on extras upon it etc. Bet you still had to pay a fair penny for it tho as to what they a fetching on the open market .. I was going to say .. glow plugs to the trouble it had starting and smoke. Also the possiblity that it was sucking air in somewhere along the fuel system. You have covered both of those and may have found the problem of it not running correctly. You'll ( we'll ) have to wait and see when you get the new parts and get it all back together in the next vlog. Good luck, hope it works 👍
It amazes me that whatever your content, I thoroughly enjoy them immensely. I don’t know how you do it but keep it going. Loving your geese, lambs and especially that cat ❤️❤️❤️
The winch on the front will turn out to be a real bonus, When you have to haul hydro pipes and move big logs about that will be very handy. I drove a Land Rover Defender for a company called Speedy Power and the size and weight of some of the trailers we moved was just shocking. Good score, well done Kris....
Don't be so hard on yourself this was a fantastic vid with a little mix on Daily off grid living.top job and best of luck with the defender looks well tidy boss
Sorry to hear about the vehicle troubles Kris, but on the up side I love seeing you do this kind of work. It's an integral part of the life you lead in being self reliant and I'm glad that you share it all. Keep up the great content!
Massively enjoyed the video! Kudos to Dot for the garden. And yes, sometimes everything happens at once. No way forward except through, which you are doing, expertly and calmly. Though I bet there have been a few bits of choice language here and there!
I hope the Range Rover works when the bits arrive. It still amazes me how good you are at everything, trimming the sheep's nails must have been challenging after one head butted you too. The garden is looking amazing
Always worth having recovery breakdown just in case as would have towed your van back to your small holding as part of cover. Enjoyed watching you get to bottom of Land Rover issues (next video) hopefully you will get many good years out of it.
Was worried about you. Love your videos. Accidentally stumbled on you and haven't missed a video. You have inspired my family to return to self sufficiency. Thank you. Best wishes to Dot and yourself.
Hi Kris, you brought your lathe from my Dad, shame I wasn’t about when you were down last weekend, would have been good to meet you. If the poorly fitted pump isn’t the issue change the injector seals. They’re cheap and the job is easy. Always my first port of call with poor starting on a TD5 engine.
I nearly missed this video, I don't like using the notifications and a lot of other garbage videos in my feed pushed it right down. It seems to be sods law everything going wrong at once. Experienced that many times myself. Seems you have a pretty good handle on what's wrong with the new vehicle and hopefully its not too much time, work and money to get it running nicely. The garden is looking fantastic. Dot has done a really great job. I wish I had the patience and perseverance to grow such a nice edible garden.
Your channel is one of the few that I don’t mind something other that you building things up. Your garden is great. Your different projects are great. Solar and hydro electric are great examples of ingenuity. I’m not too good at Diesel engines, but, I think you are going in the right direction. Ask your subscribers. You will be surprised to find out how many people are really experts in what you need!!!
Great to see you back mate.. we all go through unlucky phases in life. But you'll get through it. Landy is lovely.. may be an idea to fit a recon engine in the Mitsubishi... There's a lot of smoke coming from the landy..
Don't worry Kris we know you are doing your best as far as the videos! And anyone who does projects or DIY knows that obtaining parts is ridiculous now! I know you will get your vehicles up and going eventually, you always show perseverance!!
Congratulations on your new defender Chris. The bodywork looks very straight for a defender! It's clear someone's spent a lot of money on it and I'm sure it'll be an excellent long term workhorse for you. Trailerfitters Toolbox and Britannica Restorations are two really good YT channels for advice and how-tos. They have mostly 300tdi content but the transmission and running gear is the same hence a lot of the info is transferrable. Rust will get your rear cross member (if left unchecked) but galvanic corrosion of the aluminium body panels is the worst enemy. Always separate aluminium and steel where possible and don't be tempted by stainless steel fittings as they cause severe corrosion of the aluminium they are in contact with.
FYI, a roadside/ relay policy from the AA or RAC is not that expensive if you negociate each year. I also maintain my own cars but the security of being able to get my car back home if the worst happens is worth the cumulative cost over time. I was the same and thought i could save more than the cost of a breakdown policy over time but it really isn't worth the hassle.
Nice to see some vehicle stuff on the channel, gives a bit more variety. The new defender is very nice. Wouldn't mind more detail on the vehicle maintenance and repairs.
I appreciate this video, thank you for updating us and showing us around your homestead. I hope you get your van and new vehicle up and running v soon!
My dad told me many years ago that vehicles can be a headache. I amended that statement and said that vehicles can be migraine headaches. It's just one of those things that are hard to live with but you can't very well live without them either if you want to get things done. So glad you can at least fix your new to you vehicle much cheaper than purchasing one already running. Just a bit of patience is requited along with the parts and time. Love all your geese, chicken and sheep. But I have to see your sweet little kitty is my favorite. I am a huge cat lover. We currently have 6 at our house. The smaller kitten will be going to her forever home in a couple of weeks. I have an adult cat that needs a home then we will be down to 4. 2 of mine and 2 are my son's and his soon to be wife's. I do enjoy them so much.

S#@$ happens! I admire your workshop and the creativity obvious in your buildings. Hope things move along on a better track for you. The geese made me smile! Great garden. Good job, you two!⚘👍🇨🇦
That is a nice looking Defender! I had a Frontera with fueling issues (very common) and it all started and ultimately finished with the fuel filter and manual primer body. I dont think the filter had ever been changed and it destroyed everything back to the tank and pushed shit to the injector pump.
Loved how the garage turned out. Everything looks so good where they are at. I don't remember you doing a complete walk through. How are the walls? Any moisture issues? What about the roof? How green is it? It is such an impressive build. Blows my mind how much work you put into it.
A bit of a talk on how the spring water & seasonal goings on with the house. State or need of repairs etc. would be fantastic. Might help those of us who want to join you on this style of life get there ourselves.
Love the new ride ! had a 98 Disco, guess I worked more on it than drove it hahahaha love me a good old Land Rover, only bad part is their engines, they are so underpowered

Like you, I did all my own maintenance and that include rebuilding one engine and then an engine swap on the LWB plus fitting a replacement gearbox and clutch. Great vehicles! Hope you enjoy using yours as much as I and my family enjoyed ours. Great video - thanks.
Homestead looks so good …geese are a great addition …good luck with your car repair 🇨🇦
Thank you.
Much respect Kris, apart from all the tangents of your life going on, I have to say your driving onto the ramp was skill
Thank You Kris. Always a pleasure watching and sharing your day to day.
Hi m8. fingers X'd for the Lanny fix. The garden looking mint. Hi to Dot & yous look after yourselves Brian D.
Your range of knowledge and skills are astounding to me...and you're still so young! Remarkable...
Thanks for posting and sharing. Very nice looking Land Rover. Looking fwd to seeing it back at work with you.
It’s an absolute joy to see everything growing and settling in - it looks terrific Kris and Dot.
Real life doesn't always follow the timeline you want, we understand. Nice Landy, seems like a good few things to sort and a fair chance of that fixing it.
"The person who did it probably not the best mechanic".
That's an understatement. Very diplomatic of you! :D
Also, I'm regularly impressed at the power you can get out of a diesel 4 (erm... I mean 5) cylinder. :)
With only 4 glow plugs no less!
Love the Landy and it looks like you're covering all the bases with the repairs, good job mate
Great video Kris. What you and Dot have accomplished is inspiring.
I watch your channel because of your knowledge, ingenuity and skills, doesn't really matter to me exactly what you are doing. 👍👍👍👍
That defender will be a good future candidate for a Kris electric conversion!! There doesn't seem like there's much you can't turn your hand to and it would be a great video series!!
Absolutely! It would be a great place to put any excess from the solar too.
Seems more likely the van before that especially if the engine is BER.
Surprisingly well kept Defender. I'm glad you found it.
Hey Kris,
I've been wondering where you've been.
Keep Safe and Always Inspiring,
Matt - Toronto, Canada
Hi Kris, good to see some news from your end! Sorry to hear about the 🚐 van!
Defender looks gorgeous, and sure you will get it up and running smoothly 👍🏼
All the best to you and your family ✨💫🌳
Sorry to hear about the tough luck with the vehicles. Your ingenuity is truly inspiring.
Kris, no need to apologize. We're here. Do what you do.
The random video or update about you piddling about is cool with most of us I recon. 👍❤️
Fella, i come to watch any video you put, there is always something of interest. I wish i had half your energy and work ethic.
Always down to watch the vehicle work! Hope you get everything sorted soon
The winch on the front will turn out to be a real bonus, When you have to haul hydro pipes and move big logs about that will be very handy. I drove a Land Rover Defender for a company called Speedy Power and the size and weight of some of the trailers we moved was just shocking. Good score, well done Kris....
Thank you for the lovely update! No worries about the troubles... Everything goes by, good and bad things ;)
Any content whatsoever is appreciated Kris, thanks for sharing.
Morning Kris & Dot. Love a day in the life of you both 😊 anything you video is absolutely amazing 🤩
Was worried about you. Love your videos. Accidentally stumbled on you and haven't missed a video. You have inspired my family to return to self sufficiency. Thank you. Best wishes to Dot and yourself.
Love to see the homestead.
Good luck with the new wheels
Great update Kris, looks like after fixing that rover, you'll have an awesome vehicle. 💚👍👍
No doubt whatsoever that you'll sort it out...I consider you a true renaissance man! Thanks for including Puss =^^=
Great Range Rover your gifted with multi talents love your channel your shop your farm greeting from State Of Kentucky always watching
Bro I come here to watch whatever you do.
My favorite channel for a few years now.
Hello Kris,
Thanks for the update I was wondering where you had gone... I hope you get both the vehicles going shortly...
Take care.
Paul,,
Great to see you back mate.. we all go through unlucky phases in life. But you'll get through it. Landy is lovely.. may be an idea to fit a recon engine in the Mitsubishi... There's a lot of smoke coming from the landy..
Nice looking Landy. You'll get it running, somebody has mullered those pipes. Those geese are comics and nutter sheep!!
Good video, enjoyed it.
Don't worry Kris we know you are doing your best as far as the videos! And anyone who does projects or DIY knows that obtaining parts is ridiculous now! I know you will get your vehicles up and going eventually, you always show perseverance!!
There is no worry about getting vids done. Your time is about priorities. Just short messages are appreciated.
Love the odd car focused videos here and there. Great way to highlight the new shop
Good to see you and your off-grid life . Any videos are more than welcome . Good luck with everything 😃👍.
That defender is tasty, I'm sure you can get it running sweetly soon enough. The garden is looking ace lots of lovely veg.
It's great to see some mechanical content on your channel Kris, you are a genius!
Take your time Kris. We are happy waiting weeks ,months for your videos . Just enjoy yourself.
General updates always appreciated! Garden is looking great!
'to overcome adversity is to experience the full delight of existence'.
They are both doing an incredible job, i am quite in awe, hope liking and subscribing in some way skews the algorithm to help pay the bills.
Hi Kris Dot and Puss, I hope you get your new Defender working OK and soon. Great channel and love to follow your progress. All the best. Steve.
You impress me every video. Men like you are a rare breed these days. Keep on keeping on man
A bit of a talk on how the spring water & seasonal goings on with the house. State or need of repairs etc. would be fantastic. Might help those of us who want to join you on this style of life get there ourselves.
Good vid and those animals all look really good and healthy, especially the geese.
Bloody nice looking defender Kris, you'll get it working sounds like you're all over it already! Thanks for the update mate 👍🇦🇺🌞
Love the new ride ! had a 98 Disco, guess I worked more on it than drove it hahahaha love me a good old Land Rover, only bad part is their engines, they are so underpowered
