    My dad was hell on grouse when I was a kid..
    They always startled me when they flushed but my dad had a Browning semi auto with a polly choke...(no dogs) .
    Yrs later I met some guys in Iowa who loved hunting birds ...
    I bought a Britanny Spaniel & and had her trained ..
    Some of my best memories are of Pheasant hunts in S Dakota , and quail hunts in several states...
    I took my dad to S Dakota when he turned 80 (he retired in Fla from Tenn) and I was concerned he would get too tired...
    But , as we started jumping birds & his reflexes came back he was all smiles ..
    We hunted 3 days , then rain gave us an excuse to rest up...
    We hunted 2 more days & my dad became fast friends with my buddy's from Iowa & S. Dakota ..
    He's going on 87 now & doesnt have the legs anymore , but in his house are framed pictures of my dad , myself , my son & my dog in S Dakota & Iowa ...
    He told me recently he still wanted to go hunting , even if he sits in the truck...
    My pals & I are setting up a hunt where we can drive birds to him as he sits in the CRP or treeline ..
    Its a great community & my only regret is not making these trips much earlier ..

    Theres nothing worse than losing a wounded bird. Having a dog like Riggs that can find cripples from that far away is priceless. All of your dogs are incredible, but that bird he relocated 150 yards away, in those scenting conditions might be some of the best dog work i have seen.

    That wide open bird was beautiful that you missed that’s one of the first times I could really see coloration on the bull bird in flight , usually it’s so choked with brush and the shadows make it hard to tell , nice job beautiful scenery.
    PS weather looks great there now ❤

    Great video, as always, Eric! Great work by the doggies in those tough conditions.
    Southern Arizona is an absolutely beautiful place!
    I was in Cochise County in November.
    I went there to hunt quail, but to be honest, I was just so gobsmacked by the beautiful scenery
    that I never uncased my shotgun. I spent the whole 3 days I was there just driving around in awe the whole time. It was absolutely beautiful! I'm going back, for sure!
    The Mearns numbers might be down, but it was a good year for Gambles, at least in the area that I hunt.
    Looking forward to part 2!

    Just got home from hunting Mearns for the first time. We found some birds but my French Brittany was running them over. He had a foot injury on day two so we haven't had a chance to get these birds figured out. We had been hunting Gambles the day prior. We found quite a number of camps, lots of trash, too much to carry out. It is beautiful country down there.

    Great video as always! It is so hard to pick out the males on the rise. My dad could do it when I was a kid. I never could. I'd like to be able to try now as an adult, but our birds are gone from Alabama. At the 20:55-21:10 mark there is some cow or horse poop on the ground. Do they graze these areas in AZ? I know they do where I hunted in MT, but I figured this would be too dessert like in AZ.

    • @ericforrester1
      @ericforrester1  9 месяцев назад

      They graze AZ too. It’s a tough living for a cow but they manage somehow.
      The male mearns are much easier to tell than male Bobwhites. They are much darker than the females.

    Enjoy your videos, Eric. And I agree the males are beautiful and I would want to harvest them too. But as a retired biologist, I suspect the Mearns are no different than Bob White quail. Approx. 25% of the BW males incubate and raise broods. The BW females are polygamous, so, it really doesn't matter that one harvests males only. Quail aren't like pheasants. Keep up the good videos!

    • @ericforrester1
      @ericforrester1  9 месяцев назад

      I had heard that of Bobwhites and I wondered if it would be the same for Mearns. Very interesting. Thanks for the insight.
