Well Sam. I'm a Canadian. And I've lived in a few diverse places in my own country and our country is pretty much the same way . Old Canada to new Canada. Rich Canada to poor Canada. Frequently Im told I live in the greatest country in the world but I can show poverty and crime ridden places here too. Down east we have fishing villages that look alot like what you're showing here. Then we have the nations capital Ottawa where they make it as modern and hip as possible for political reasons. At least in Ottawas downtown core where the government and embassies are. And then there's Toronto where a ten minute walk can take you from poverty and crime ridden regents park to a rich part of the city full of million dollar homes and bmw's. Oh and then there's the gated communities in Oakville. Well Sam it looks like your country has a rich tapestry of new and old rich and poor like mine does. I guess that makes Russia an ordinary country just like mine. Ps on the street I currently live its just a gravel road like one you're walking on. Keep up the good work.

Hi, Sam! I say all this "real Russia" thing is a complete misconception. The point is that not only is Russia so big, but also it is incredibly diverse in terms of life standard, culture, climate, you name it. Therefore, when you say that a shabby building in Vladimir suburb is "real Russia", I will say "yes" to that. It is real and unique two-storey Russia. Yet it is merely one of its sides. If you say that your friend's gorgeous house is "real Russia", of course it is! Moscow city is real Russia, and Optina monastery is real Russia.
To sum up, real Russia is the spirit and our tradition, our values, and, unfortunately, our flaws, expressed in a great variety of ways. Those who say that only cool Moscow is real Russia, they do not know my country and cannot rightly love it. And only those who accept it entirely can boast that love.

The funny thing is that such housing is most likely PRIVATIZED, which means there is a chance to get a normal apartment thanks to the state program. I myself live in a new apartment, in a 3-story building, Tver region. And in the 90s, I, together with a family of 4 people, lived for several years in just such an old two-story house, built by German prisoners after the Second World War (by the way, the house was very warm, it had a toilet with a bath, but the gas was imported). Since 2017, I have been living in my own apartment, which I privatized; at that time it cost several thousand rubles. I received it from the state for free.

  • @lanabanana4577
    @lanabanana4577 Месяц назад +13

Sam, I love your videos. Yes, Russia is a country of contrasts, this is manifested in literally everything.
Our family has a house in the village. We didn’t come there for a long time and it fell into disrepair, the fence was rickety, the barn had collapsed, the area was overgrown with grass. If someone took a photograph of our house, he could sign it as “real poor Russia.” But then my parents retired and decided to live in the village. The whole family built a new, large, beautiful house with all the amenities, and put up a new fence. Now my parents live in this house in winter. Perhaps someone will say about our house that oligarchs live in it. 😂
When I was little, my parents had 3 country houses in different villages, which they inherited. They sold 2 houses.
My friend lives in a typical village house, which from the outside looks old. But inside it has a shower, toilet and good repair. Appearances are deceiving.
I would also like to note for those who don’t know: many Russians live in cities, and only come to their dachas (individual houses) in the summer for a few days or don’t come there for several years. It makes no sense for them to invest heavily financially in a house in which they spend 2 weeks a year.
I have never understood people, especially Westerners, who judge the well-being of Russian citizens by the appearance of their country house.

Dear Sam, my wife is Polish, I've been there many times over the last 16 years, there are still parts in Silesia that are appalling, crumbling flats, holes in the roads, awful communal areas, communist era stagnation still to this day, however go to the big towns, it's all glamour and modern shopping malls. I could do exactly what you are filming, the difference between the big provincial towns where European money has been spent on transport infrastructure and the new mall's, just a few tram stops away, it looks like a coloured WW2 setting.
If you travel east, you will come across the old single storey wooden houses built in the 1890's or earlier, often seen burning in WW2 films as the Germans went east. These ancient dwellings should be retained as part of the historic architecture of the region, not seen as 'poor' housing.
I can show posh and very poor housing in the Black Country in the Midlands of old industrial England side by side, very new and very old, but here the very old is seen as heritage.
Just do what you honestly do, I find it very interesting and informative, best greetings from Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Hi Sam, I do understand your dilemma...
I have been visting Russia, about 7 times as a tourist from 2015 to 2019, all times as a tourist.
I appreciated every visits, and I have good friends in Moscow area. But I didn't just visit Moscow.
With a friend, we went out of Moscow to rent a banya, several hours away from Moscow. I have also been visting some vilage north of Niscny Novogorad, and there I was alway visting som e Dachas.
What I love the most from Russia, is the great variety of what you see and experience. Like when I was invited to a night train from Moscow to Nichny Novogord, 3rd class with very open carriage, about 58 people sleeping in an open area.
As people also told me, Moscow is not Russia, and I glad I had to chance to see more of Russia.

It's not really "contrasts", it's freedom (for exercising almost anything one wants to/needs, at the same time not being fined 100500 for some unmowed lawn). Most, if not all, of those differences like the "red square" and "half abandoned datcha", as if the "opposits" or "contrasts" exist only in very limited fragmentary minds, while in reality belong to one the same family, close relatives or even one the same individual. There's no "segregation" of any sort in terms of comparable to anything in the West or anywhere else. I personally own 3 datchas and "am in charge of" the fourth, two of them I got from my grandparents, one is my mother's, yet most of the time and things there I do, and the fourth I bought myself, they range from a basically totally abandoned one with basically nothing done there since around 30 years ago to the one with an all-year-round habitat of three floors (+ the fourth is the underground garage suitable for living in two separate rooms as well). How and why could that be different? Some people, especially when getting old but far from limited by this reason only, move to "simpler living" / "downshifting" (for savings, for less of noise, for renting out their main habitats, for living in the nature or close to, like a lake or a forest, for whatever other reason), some spend there summers or weekends even, some retain housing in their place of birth that might be "in decline" due to various objective reasons and they moved long ago, yet they retain that in hope, or real known prospects, of revival of that, at the same time investing currently 0 in upkeeping that. And countless other possible cases there as well.

Sam, I live in Alabama , USA and I could show the same here - contrasts. We have 12 Counties that are 3rd world- then we have Huntsville area and other wealthy areas.

Hi Sam!!Now you told exactly what i have always been thinking about. Some youtubers want to make some lala land and they want us to buy it. My deepest respect to you for speaking out. Yes every society has pros and cons, An honest youtuber shows it all. You just did that. Thank you and keep it up! 🥰

This content is pure gold - this is what made B&B popular - real suburbs that show that contrast - I really love it - you can see different stages

I like the contrast of the newer buildings and the older ones. I like the content overall, usually more so if you go have fun with people.

Sam you are doing good job showing us Russia. All places have good and bad. Don't like staged videos.

Sam, keep up the great work. Love seeing all the aspects of life and the people in Russia. Those Buhankas are really amazing. Would love to see a video just about them. Cheers!
