This is so sad. I could hear all the sirens yesterday and thought it must be a really bad car accident, but I guess this is what happened. As a retired tour guide I would always tell my people, don't go to a beach that doesn't have a lifeguard, leave all of your jewelry and important belongings back in your hotel room safe, do not leave anything in your car rental, secure your wallet and car keys in a waterproof pouch attached to your person. I hope these thieves return the items. I feel so much Aloha for them.
One thing never leave your garage door opener in your car when parking for longer than a few hours. They steal your car and look up your address and head to your house.
Wise words. And times are changing all over. Many people seem more desperate and reckless, less conscientious. And we have to plan accordingly. But all of you right here prove that good people still exist. ❤️
Yeah, don't leave anything that even looks like it might have value visible anywhere. I used to live in Germany, which has a very low crime rate, but Germans don't give crime a chance to happen. They lock everything, all the time. Keep honest people honest. Don't even present the temptation to steal.
Hawai'i has a down side, a REAL down side! It's disgusting. Theft is common, there. It always has been. But, the following is also always true: 1) Never, ever leave your belongings ANYWHERE unattended. People cannot be trusted ANYWHERE not to steal. 2) Put your belongings in the trunk of your rental car. 3) Use a safety pin to attach rental car keys to your swim suits or other swim wear. You can keep yourselves safe. Leaving belongings UNATTENDED, ANYWHERE is not the way to do it.
I NEVER rents cars from any of the major rental companies in Oahu, but instead rented beaters from substandard car rental joints. Most of the cars are older and filthy, so you blend in just like a lower-working-class local, especially on the leeward side of the island where petty thieves, lowlifes and criminals live.
@@belinalug6928 I don't blame you. They're of my lineage, but I loathe all of these disgusting lowlife Island cretins. They're not part of the diversity & inclusion equation that I embrace.
@@carlv8168 if you feel so bad about the people on this side of the island why do you go there?! Visit somewhere else without “low class people” unacceptable to call people this! There have been A LOT of tourist snorkel deaths in Hawaii. Apparently, it strains the heart to use certain types of snorkels, which can be unknowingly rented or purchased, and then the snorkeler quietly expires from the low oxygen in the body resulting in not enough oxygen circulating to the brain and the person very suddenly passes out in the water, drowning. Snorkel risks should be better publicized.
How do you know that the snorkel was the cause or contributed to this dude's death? Maybe he was morbidly obese with a history of pre-existing heart disease, and perhaps that's what got him! Maybe diet and exercise should also be better publicized to prevent strokes and heart disease, too!
Yes, Hawaii has many deaths due to snorkeling and the poor tourist are not warned about it. I lived there for 5 years and heard about so many of them, also deaths on the scooters.
This is SICK! First, she loses husband on Hawaiian honeymoon + rental car & belongings?! WTF is going on, gangie?! Help this lady out & find this POS & mete out Wesside "justice!"
Hawaii is no longer a. Aloha island to vacation and to live . Sad for the couple. On top loosing the husband , these thieves are evil My prayers go to her and family
Do not be offended but I am going to point out the use of loosing, it is losing (usage of loose is the dog got loose) vs (you lose a spouse). You are not alone, so many people get that word wrong.
Tourism, the military, and the agriculture are the main sources of income for the islands. How are we supposed to encourage the tourists to come if they are victimized while here? The young generation coming up is rotten. Not all of them, but a lot of them. No morals, no values, no aloha. They don't realize what a special and unique place Hawaii is. I'm born and raised here, grew up in the 60's and 70's. Hawaii was safe and sheltered from all the nonsense that happened on the mainland. Now we are as bad as every major city on the mainland. I feel sad that my grandchildren will never get to experience life in Hawaii the way that I did. Whomever stole the bags and rental car better give it back. People out there know who did it. Give it back. Those things are precious to that lady.
it is a beautiful place we visited twice, and we did not had any problems you are lucky to be born there, when first time we visited , i thought these people so lucky to live here
I agree as a resident for 6 years in just that amount of time I've seen how drastic things have changed. The homless population has higley spiked the theft crimes have drastically gone up. Stabbings have. I mean last year someone was stabbed right behind waikiki precinct. You look through any other posts now about hawaii and if some tourist mentions about the theft crime in hawaii they have at least 3 people say "that's what you get don't come back here we don't want you here" so it's not even shamed on towards tourist anymore. It's for the most part praised by locals
Brah, that is Kanaka land; 100% it was not some tourist who stole their items. Shame on whoever stole their items, and this should make known that just because you Hawaiian doesnt make you a good person.
Nothing is safe anymore. You have to be on guard all of the time. Malls, stores, gas stations, etc. Very sad what things have come to in this day and age!
Noone cared when it was just urban areas that experienced violence and only when mostly white, middle class neighborhoods experience violence does anyone pay attention.
Used to be, FOR MANY DECADES, people were tried and eventually publicly hanged for violent crimes. This was STANDARD. Did I mention parents (AND schoolteachers and principals) used to PHYSICALLY DISCIPLINE kids, keeping many from getting to that point as adults? How fast would we get this under control, if we went back to all of that.
You know how much I don’t wanna pretend that there’s positive people out there? I find excuses to stay home. And when I go out I dread it and I make it fast. This is how much faith I have in humanity now. SAD!! I don’t go out to holo holo especially in the day when most people are out. I can’t trust anyone.
I almost drowned years ago at this exact same beach, 3 kids had to pull me back in on their paddle board. Those currents will pull you out to the middle of the ocean in seconds. If it were not for my 3 angels I surely would have died.
Hawaii is known for so much Aloha! But somehow, we lost it. It was so funny when Iam Tongi was in American Idol to make us all proud to show the world how much Aloha Hawaii has and how beautiful it is to live and come from Hawaii. But the truth is the Aloha Sprit today is not the Aloha of long ago just full of fluff and BS. I am an islander and me my self is too scared to go Waianae or in fact any beach in Hawaii that someone will break in my car, get robbed or harm my family. 😪
It's good to hear that it wasn't always this way. I came here 2 years ago to retire and the hostility I get at the beach (I'm a hoaole male) takes away all the joy. Just walking around in Honolulu is unpleasant. I'm going back to the madland as soon as I can swing it.
Especially in Nanakuli! I lived in Ma`ili for a few years (I am white) and I never had a problem, but I never took chances and I always went to a beach that had Life Guards (that knew me).
Another horrific tragedy, this time, for honeymooners. I want to give my heartfelt sympathy to the Wife and all who knew and loved him. May God give you the strength you need to get through this heartbreaking time. God Bless 🙏We all need to be more aware of our surroundings, even if it looks like Paradise !
Nick Frischke still hasn't been found. He is the tip of a very large iceberg. The only reason the world knows about him is because he wasn't born in the country. Although there is a huge amount of intracultural violence in certain cultures, vulnerable cultures (a high-average quotient and very low violent crime statistics) are preyed upon constantly. In countries listed as having a low-average quotient of the stuff that matters, staggeringly high violent crime statistics are usually par for the course. A young man travelling from a relatively safe country should have been warned, surely, that not all cultures have low violent crime statistics and that predatory aggression is usually rife in such countries. Predatory aggression is random violence inflicted on strangers (the victims are usually not known to the predator).
I’m so glad they are going to add lifeguards to the area… I know how it feels to be alone in one bad situation just made worse by people taking advantage of it, but this was so much worse because she lost her dear love… And these random people trying to help are so wonderful, they don’t even know. 😢
Yeah, sad it's like that. Every part of this island is beautiful, but the west side is just stunning. Everyone I've met over there has been lovely, but there's a few who've just gotta screw it up.
Snorkeling can be quite dangerous, for those not used to doing it. It puts a lot of strain on the heart and respiratory system. I used to vacation in the Florida Keys and nearly every year, some man would die of heart failure, while snorkeling. And you don't realize the strain you've put on your body became you're floating in the water.
This is heartbreaking! I pray to God to comfort the wife and give her strength in this time of pain in Jesus name. Amen 🙏🏼 Whoever stole their belongings is so cruel!
Where do you go with a stolen car? On an island? I was there 50 years ago, and had my purse stolen out of a rental car. Lucky for me, my passport was in the hotel. Yes, criminals are everywhere and very few people are native any longer. Bringing crime in. So sad. The world is becoming a sad place. This woman will never recover. I hope she has a great support system.
So tragic. And the locals make it worse with the usual petty crime. What I hate is that there is zero peer pressure among locals to discourage criminal activity. West Oahu is the worst. Too many locals there treat tourists like free pickings. And that laid back island spirit coming off the locals often hides hearts full of addiction, bitterness, cunning, sneakiness, and race hatred toward mainlanders. I was a fifteen year kamaaina who lived all over Oahu so I know what I am talking about. People need Jesus.
JESUS/CHRISTIANITY ALONG AT GUNPOINT IS WHAT WAS USED TO STEAL THE ISLANDS FROM THE HAWAIIANS IN THE FIRST PLACE, PEOPLE DO NOT SWIM IN PLACES THAT ARE NOT SAFE TO START WITH. ALA MOANA , MAGIC ISLAND, & THE REST OF THE BEACH LINE ALL THE WAY UP TO DIAMOND HEAD & BEYOND, ARE SAFE FOR SWIMMING . YOU ARE NOT SAFE FROM CRIME NOWHERE, & THE MAINLAND STOP SENDING YOUR HOMELESS TO HAWAII. IT IS SAD UNFORTUNATE WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS COUPLE, WHAT A WAY TO SPEND A HONEYMOON. ON A NOT SO WHITE SANDY BEACH OF HAWAII, MAHALO NUI.
@Vanessa Ambrose that islanders being happy and kind is a front. But their hearts are actually very much in bondage. So don't expect these ppl to actually be good to u because deep down, they are not. Any person without Jesus is going to be compromised. The happy front is just to lure u in. They do need tourist money. Doesn't mean they won't take advantage of u when u show up.
Lived on a island for twenty years, Heaven………. then came the cruise ships, bit by bit chewing off the island , those mom and pop shops..? gone.. serenity replaced with a T-shirt shop. But hey, that’s progress……... I’m thankful that I grew up without technology, I’ll use it now, helps me keep in touch and I love RUclips, and I’ll keep in my memory those days spent, not in front of a game, the only light from a screen, but in the warmth of the sun and the beckoning call of friends to go play, …..outside……where the world was ours……….
It's clear and disappointing that Hawaii has crime just like everywhere else. Situational awareness is key - never leave your personal items unattended.
indeed, if there is something you don't need with you don't bring it, also put your personal items where you'll be able to keep an eye on them and take a picture of your driver's license and other important documents too so you have a copy.
@ty mck the gap between rich and poor is glaring and many native Hawaiians are being displaced and that is valid anger. Native Hawaiians are suffering because of their land being occupied by non natives and when people become desperate to survive they do desperate things.
I find it extremely odd that the emphasis by everyone is on the stolen items versus the death of a newly wed. Especially a rental car that the company has insurance for and most likely extra keys. The missing items pales in comparison to a dead husband on your honeymoon. My condolences to his family. Not how a honeymoon should end 💐
Yes, that confused me as well. The police department will give her documentation for the airport, and to access the hotel. But she has lost her husband forever, and hardly any mention.
I am so sorry for this family’s loss and hope they can find comfort in one another during this time. I hope her family can be there to help her get through this and that she is treated with aloha: kindness, love and respect; until she makes it home safely. To her husband rest in peace and may he make it to the other side and always watch over her. A lei should be woven for him and an apology sent to her from Islanders that in her time of loss she also had to endure being robbed and left without her most essential items and transportation. I hope she has someone looking out for her. This is devastating and tragic and I hope other commenters will consider the human being going through this loss before they use this as a place to dump ugly words and bad feeling. Now is not the time. Those issues can be worked out elsewhere. Please have respect for this family and allow them to be left alone about what is or isn’t good about the islands and Nanakuli and just send kind and genuine warnings to other visitors so that they can be safe here as our guests. Yes all visitors need to be good guests. But while in our home we also should help make sure they are safe and be kind to them if something terrible like this happens while in our home.
They won’t catch them. Because they are probably not black in high cost of living Hawaii. This world is just heinous and the people have no one that help them.
@@sylviarucker4658 If those folks lived in another country they would probably be back home before they ever saw anything happen with their case. I worked overnight security at the front gate of the Japanese consulate. They would get about above five to fifteen cases a month of Japanese tourists getting their rental car broken into or their wallets and purses stolen. Those tourists would have to go to the consulate to get temporary return documents and tickets if needed. A lot of times they missed their flights because they had to stay an extra day or two before they could get return documents.
Wow, this reminded me of the one lady who was in a single car accident think she hit a pole or tree she passed away, instead of people helping her they stole the groceries she had just bought..... dude like serious, some people need to grow a heart and compassion. Like wth gave birth to those ugly hearted people. My condolences to the family.
this is heartbreaking. every Hawaii native I've seen speaking about tourism keeps encouraging people to *stop visiting* because there's been such an increase in nonislander racism and violence.
@@Andy_Holmes Hawaiian natives (pacific islanders) are growing increasingly racist against nonislanders (anyone not from the island natively). there has been an increase in violence as islanders are, in their eyes, trying to defend their home from invading tourists who disrespect the island and its people, leave it trashed and go home. I'm encouraging everyone wanting to visit the islands to rethink their decision and choose another island to visit instead. a lot of non-islander folks are ended up beaten, kidnapped, dead or disappeared. it's always been my dream to see Hawaii since i was little, but i believe the wishes of the people who live there natively are much more important than my desire to see the place, and i'm going to respect that and not visit.
@@foxbuns The problem isn't as severe as you seem to believe. I've lived here fifteen years and haven't heard of too many cases regarding this, and not any kidnappings or deaths. For one thing there aren't that many natives here, they're only a small fraction of the population. I've heard there's actually more Hawaiians living in Vegas. And most of them are decent people, despite many sharing feelings of antiwhitism - a better term I think for what you call nonislander racism, as their contempt is predominantly directed towards white people. Still very few act out on their prejudice. As long as you have money to support yourself, Hawaiians don't seem to care too much. The economy is dependent on tourism, and everyone with minimal intelligence understands that. I don't think the fear of natives should prevent you or anyone from visiting Hawaii.
This is very sad. Though I wish tourists could be warned in advanced about the dangers of visiting the West Oahu side. It tends to be a high crime and isolated area Most of the locals would not think of going there unless they happen to live in the area.
So sad that this man died on his Honeymoon, and to top it off, the thieves that made a very bad day even worse for his wife. Why would a tourist want to go to the Leeward side of the island, that side has not been safe for a long time, at least it wasn't when I lived there in the late 90's.
Nice about the lifeguard stand. CCTV of parking areas near popular beaches might be nice too. Peoples’ belongings are really vulnerable in these situations. Horrible about the dude dying. 😞
At first from the headline I thought someone murdered him while trying to carjack them or something but I guess he happened to drown and then their stuff was stolen at the same time. I’m glad he wasn’t murdered but still, what an awful thing to happen on top of everything else.
Wow we left Hawaii today after doing our honeymoon there for a month. I snorkled on Big Island for the first time and I was thinking while doing it man this is a workout. Prayers for that family, Ohana!
My friends brand new car was stolen here a couple years ago. Absolutely, absolutely, do NOT leave your keys/phones on the beach. He buried it, but the thieves saw it and immediately took the keys/phone as soon as he got in the water.

Honoulu is like any big city on the mainland. Traffic, homelessness, crime, drugs, lots of tall highrises and lots of people crammed into a small space. Go to outer islands. Not the same as when I grewup.

Hawaii, you need to get these car thieves and homeless under control. We were snorkeling on the North Shore a few years ago while on vacation and our car was stolen. The police said it happens 7 times a week on that beach.
Somebody gotta die before the City puts a lifeguard stand at that location. Also whoever stole their belongings and rental car: What goes around comes around.

We as activity agents recommend tourist not go to waianae when on oahu or mauna kea when on big island those 2 places are known for rentals getting stolen or damaged. The car companies reminds them too when they get their vehicals. Basically they go at their own risk. Its similar to how the JTB and HTA warns Japaneae not to converste with locals. But they will never get off their ʻēlemu & do something for Hawai’i that’s positive. Auē! Aloha is more than a word. It is an act of kindness, love & caring. Anyone can say it. I have been to Oahu in the 90's I had great experience and had a great time. Aloha from New Mexico. Dine meaning, Navajo.
Such a tragedy that he drowned. The theft happens anywhere, you can't leave valuables unattended anywhere, any park or beach. Decades ago I was in the Caribbean and saw a woman walking away with my bag I had left on my towel and I made her give it back. Another time in California I started walking off from my towel and stuff on a remote beach and noticed a couple veering toward my stuff when I looked back. I turned around, they saw me and veered away again. You have several choices. You can be vigilent and nearby like my second experience, which is not very relaxing, you can leave your valuables locked in the hotel safe or car trunk, you can hide the actual small valuables and leave a decoy bag in the trunk or on the towel, you can secure just the keys in your swimgear if the fob is waterproof, or you can go with others and take turns leaving to play so the stuff is not unattended. Criminal opportunists are sadly common so you have to assume they are anywhere.
This area needs to be blacklisted as a holiday destination due to the high level of crime against unsuspecting and innocent tourists. It would seem car rentals are easy targets and I bet some shady car renters are in on the scam.
I left Hawaii in 2004 after 24 years...good riddance. It's an over-priced haven for crime, grift, drugs (meth), and poverty. Few tourists realize how many homeless people share their beaches.

Well said from an experienced concierge.
One thing never leave your garage door opener in your car when parking for longer than a few hours. They steal your car and look up your address and head to your house.
True story!🤙 Former tour guide from years ago, you hit everything on the head. Now days is wayyyy worse than 15 years ago. Unbelievable!
But, the following is also always true:
1) Never, ever leave your belongings ANYWHERE unattended.
I won't even go there to mingle with those kinds of people, shame

Perhaps he got caught in an undertow and his head hit debris . No one knows.

Yes, Hawaii has many deaths due to snorkeling and the poor tourist are not warned about it. I lived there for 5 years and heard about so many of them, also deaths on the scooters.

I agree. I tell my kids the same thing. They and my grandchildren will never experience what I did growing up in the 50s, 60s and the 70s.
it is a beautiful place we visited twice, and we did not had any problems you are lucky to be born there, when first time we visited , i thought these people so lucky to live here
I hope the locals find who did it and teach the bad guys a lesson they will never forget.
Lower the rates with package deals.

Noone cared when it was just urban areas that experienced violence and only when mostly white, middle class neighborhoods experience violence does anyone pay attention.
Used to be, FOR MANY DECADES, people were tried and eventually publicly hanged for violent crimes. This was STANDARD. 😪
😭that could be anywhere get ready braddah.😂
It's good to hear that it wasn't always this way. I came here 2 years ago to retire and the hostility I get at the beach (I'm a hoaole male) takes away all the joy. Just walking around in Honolulu is unpleasant. I'm going back to the madland as soon as I can swing it.
Especially in Nanakuli! I lived in Ma`ili for a few years (I am white) and I never had a problem, but I never took chances and I always went to a beach that had Life Guards (that knew me).
That’s so sad 🤦♀️😢

Wow, poor lady. Then some punks gotta rip her off, adding insult to injury? Makes West Oahu look nasty!
West Oahu was always a ghetto.
And you don't realize the strain you've put on your body became you're floating in the water.
wow, I never heard about this before

Understandable
@Vanessa Ambrose that islanders being happy and kind is a front. But their hearts are actually very much in bondage. They do need tourist money. Doesn't mean they won't take advantage of u when u show up.

Just because they show you the paradise side of Hawaii, doesn't mean it's paradise, for those, who lives there.
@ty mck the gap between rich and poor is glaring and many native Hawaiians are being displaced and that is valid anger. Native Hawaiians are suffering because of their land being occupied by non natives and when people become desperate to survive they do desperate things.

I worked overnight security at the front gate of the Japanese consulate.
They would get about above five to fifteen cases a month of Japanese tourists getting their rental car broken into or their wallets and purses stolen.
Those tourists would have to go to the consulate to get temporary return documents and tickets if needed. A lot of times they missed their flights because they had to stay an extra day or two before they could get return documents.

this is heartbreaking. every Hawaii native I've seen speaking about tourism keeps encouraging people to *stop visiting* because there's been such an increase in nonislander racism and violence.
This is exactly what it's about. 💯
What is nonislander racism?
@Andy Holmes They don't like tourists. They rather people not visit their country.
