- With barely enough shelter to house even 11% of the homeless people on its main island, Hawaii lawmakers struggle for solutions amid rising costs of living and low wages. But one group of homeless Hawaiians has taken matters into their own hands, forming a highly organized and self-sustaining community. Could a key part of solving Hawaii’s homelessness problem actually come from its homeless citizens?

Aunty twinkle is a saint. She helped my brother get on his feet when he went homeless. She really looks out for folks.

@@Lily-yc3ow Aunty twinkly is doing mighty fine. Since covid hit Hawaii hard, her and a few folks have been maintaining ALL the parks on the west side of O'ahu. They got rid of trash, started cutting the grass, fixing up what they could fix up, etc...She definitely does not play when it comes to taking care of the land.

This community is the nicest homeless encampment I’ve ever seen. I don’t know what they do about sewage and food and water but give them land and help them live free

Hawaiians are not natives to the land, they settled there in the 11th century from Raiatea, Bora Bora and Tahiti, they brought with them a caste system which enslaved the local population and the worst was the practice of human sacrifice.
I lived on Maui 20+ years ago. I left because as a 25 year old I knew I would never have a nice house,a nice car or make a decent living there. $5 for a gallon of milk. $4 gallon for gas. $1000 a month for a studio apartment. And that was 20 years ago!!! Aloha and mahalo.
Also salaries are not close to matching incomes making many people stress about money and not be able to do the things that makes hawaii great

Das why I left Hawaii in 1955. I just graduated from a mainland engineering school and returned to Hawaii. One look at all the changes and I turned around and went back to the mainland.

Dace I , It is happening everywhere in the world. The US has grown and changed so much even in my lifetime. Life used to be simpler everywhere, but with technology comes progress and changes. You can’t have it both ways. I wish there was an easy answer so they everyone could just live as they please. I don’t know how this gets fixed...... do you?

They're not harming anyone, but modern society feels it needs to interfere in the lives of these people and tell them that the way they're living is bad, when it's actually a much more natural way of living than living in some big overcrowded city. Industrialization is necessary though. They need better ports and some level of industry to get more supplies and jobs. Tourism provides really bad service sector jobs to the locals.

I understand how they feel. Their government leaders cater to the tourism industry, the rich and wealthy, outrageous cost of living, and the locals are left behind, that's a shame.
Twinkle is head of a well-run village and it seems so traditional Polynesian. The Government is to blame for the gentrification of the islands that lets rich people displace natives.

Very sad! The homeless problem . I was homeless with my husband and our lil boy and Government couldn't help us. No emergency housing n my husband lost his job when he went blind in 2015. So 5 months being homeless living in our car was so TOUGH. I took care of my hubby and our 5 year old at the time. He is 7 now and God has blessed us n still we are blessed. Amen

There's a big difference between being homeless and houseless. In fact their 'home' seems a LOT nicer and safer than most tenement 'housing' offered by the government.

True, but many people who are homeless chose that life. As a social worker, I encounter homeless people daily and the majority of the long-term homeless I work with who do not suffer from mental/physical illness have made the conscious decision not to be contributing members of society. I had a 22 year old kid tell me he'd rather live off the fat of the land than go get a job and pay bills.
Well o am just gonna disagree with that though I respect your opinion don't want to fight but in reality some people even think living homeless is better than working and etc.. There are so many homeless here in hawaii and also the states but you see them everywhere and the government does try to give them jobs and homes but only temporary soon might as well have everyone be homeless living in hawaii is he'll not only trying to survive but they have alot of money from taxes food and bills its stressful if your a local

Twinkle is a good role model for other camps to follow. It is sad that Hawaiians are homeless in HI, it’s not right.

How about helping these people switch from makeshift tents to Tiny Houses? Easy to build & maintain. Some we built with their own showers and composting toilets, some communities build a living structure with communal showers, toilets and kitchen facilities as well as a common room for hanging out and TV.

How about telling these people to get a freakin' job or provide training so they have no excuse for sitting on their behinds and whining about how unfair life is treating them? Then they could afford to buy their own Tiny Houses, paid for by themselves, as well as pay for the utilities, TV and a place to "hang out". They don't trust the government? Fine. Stop sponging and start supporting yourselves for a change. Then you can do what you want as long as it is legal.

When I visited Honolulu in 2017 I was there for a week. It was crazy expensive! I noticed homeless people like every city. I'm from Seattle. It's bad here. I feel for all homeless people. So sad...

This is too 😔! I had a coworker that told me that same states actually send their homeless to Hawaii in order to reduce the homeless population on the mainland in the U.S. But knowing that natives of Hawaii are homeless; this is beyond government betrayal!
I live in SLC and people told me they shipped the homeless from here down to Provo when the Olympics was here. Alot of states ship their homeless to other places instead of trying to actually fix the problem.

I was born an raised in Waianae. Makaha actually, if we talking ahupua'a. It's sad that I had to move my family out of Hawaii in order to "seek a better life" for my family. We had choices to live with family, but didn't want to do that if it meant impeding on their daily lives. They would say otherwise, but I know if choke people in one small space, that would only make everyone uncomfortable. Goal is to get back to Hawaii and be able to sustain a life there.

Not everyone *wants* to be housed... I have lived this "normal" life for 15 years and miss the streets. I get up, go to work, go to bed, rinse and repeat every dang day... I should be enjoying life and making memories while i have the chance, instead im wasting my time on this earth just trying to pay bills. Yeah, I was gonna say, the nomadic lifestyle isn't a bad thing. People have happily lived this way for millennia, yet Western society makes it out to be a bad thing because it's not the "norm" and it wants everyone to be wageslaves, working 9-5 jobs that they hate, paying rent, paying bills, paying taxes. The way the people in this video are living doesn't look bad at all. It looks nice actually. They have their own little commune next to the beach and seem connected with each other as a community. I'd like to live like that. It's not like the tent cities full of alcoholics and druggies you find in inner-city areas.

Yes, things could be a lot better there, but they don't seem too bothered. The local council probably wants to shove them all into cramped, overpriced apartments, so I don't blame them for wanting to stay where they are.
I think they want to be housed, this is not homelessness by choice, it’s economics. They should have affordable housing available with kitchen, bathrooms etc. especially for their kids.

I finally got to experience Hawaii last year. It's very very depressing. I was in love with Honolulu and all the attractions but the moment you start filtering out, especially towards Waianae where we stayed on a military cabin in a gated area. The local community was not hospitable, they hated the fact I was not from the island even as an obvious tourist I had no business in the local stores, or outlying areas.
I wish the state would take care of it's citizens. They're angry, and they want to live where they were born but there are places that mainlanders couldn't afford without 6 figure incomes. I agree, there is no reason to let rich folks buy up all the land. Native Americans get their reservations, these folks have even less to work with and it should be their choice what happens to the islands
I just came back from Kauai June 22nd and it was the complete opposite. No large hotels. Not even one. A handful of resorts, a two lane road and mom and pop stores and restaurants that close down at 9pm nightly. Even the few bars we saw closed by 9pm. It was more beautiful then I could've imagined and I'm so grateful I did my research and chose to go to the most beautiful, and the quietest island. The locals were amazing.

I think this a great idea! Twinkle is a wonderful role model and I love her zero tolerance for stealing. If the state would provide the homeless with matching tents people would think it just looked like a campground. Best homeless camp I’ve seen thus far.

That's the point, like the girl said, "its typical for Polynesians to have this communal living". If you force them into housing, it has psychological defects because it takes away their sense of community. Being forced to integrate into a western mindset, get a job, individualise everything, its actually difficult for some people. Especially those that rely heavily on their community, such as twinkle, having lost her family, these people are her family. Being separated and not living so closely will actually negatively change her life, even if she is contributing to society and making money. she will not be happy. They should be able to lease the land and build permanent homes where they are.

Volunteering is great. However, it is not "contributing to society". As the term is combative against individuals that have a negative economical impact by not earning and recirculating money into the economy via taxes, housing, and other products. Twinkle and her new family are volunteering. They are putting their time and efforts into building a safe space for themselves and others for zero monetary compensation. Instead, they have the rewards of being self-sufficient, communal, and of being a part of something bigger than themselves. It's just not currently conventional.
200 and 45 kids that’s definitely something we can all gather to help change let’s do something like a go fund me to help out these beautiful natives!!

We need more people like Twinkle. He gets people organized and taking care of where they are so they can stay there. The video said Hawaiians had a history of communal living and he is using that in the present day.
Baltimore was listed as one of the cities with homeless problems. I remember when mental hospitals there were closed and bus loads of the patients were taken into parts of the city and dropped there. No homes, no jobs, no outpatient help, no nothin’! These were the people least likely to be able to make.

Reminds me of when China bulldoze villages or places where people have been living for generations. They put up new high rise buildings that no one can afford and those places turn into ghost cities and towns. Those places are waste of resources and creepy.
Hmmm, should the state forbid land owners to sell their property to the highest bidders? Should they rezone some land for middle income residences? Should Dole make all employees shareholders? Everyone I meet who has been to Hawaii has loved it but admit they couldn’t afford to live there.

Hawaii is mainly a tourist state now. Its also a place where the rich have beautiful homes. Its very difficult in an environment that caters to outsiders enjoying their vacations there, for the locals to survive all yr round. Hawaii used to have the Dole Pineapple plantation there, but they moved elsewhere yrs ago.

It’s wild to me that there’s homelessness in Hawaii. If people, native Hawaiians particularly, want to live outdoors or in a camp that’s cool. But just homelessness and poverty in such a wealthy place is crazy.

Too many non-hawaiians want to live in Hawaii, they make it too expensive for native Hawaiians to afford a house in their native land
I remember years ago the Japanese descended on Hawaii raising the real estate so no one could afford to live there especially the natives to the state. It’s a very unaffordable place to live I’ve read.

In Waikiki I was very annoyed to find that items in some stores had 2 prices - one for the Japanese and one for everyone else. Also the majority of cosmetics were geared to Asian skin complexions. I thought America won that war?

Just a thought - why isn't the state putting in tiny houses right on that land for people, and making a public bath area for them. They are living a good life.
It looks like a post apocalyptic community. It looks better than living like homeless in my town of D.C. Problem is you can’t restart in modern society. It’s not like you can run get a plot of land and build a house like it’s the 1800s
Homelessness should be a major concern and helping the homeless should be a priority. Luckily this homeless village is pristine and has a great leader and captains who make sure there's no nonsense going on. Fortunately they are in Hawaii and beautiful weather.

These organizations are so dumb. All these people want or need is an area where they can live without being thrown out. Provide them with refrigeration, grills, shower houses, porto potties, trash pick up, and tents if needed, and inform them as long as they arent doing illegal activities, and keep it clean and kept up they will be left alone. That's all they want. It would be cheaper for the government then putting them all in government housing.

There needs to be a program like habitat for humanity that will go in and provide trash service, clean accessible water and build them tiny homes to stay in. Where is the US government?
What can they do? In bigger cities lots of mainland homeless show up every week and cause so much trouble.
The U.S. is here in Hawai'i illegally occupying us. Unfortunately the U.S. Government has never cared about Hawai'i and has in fact caused most of Hawai'i's problems not just now but throughout history as well.

Hawaii is the place of the rich, not the poor (not fair, I 100% agree). Instead of trying to get these families into houses that they would never be able to afford maybe tiny homes can be built in place of their encampment with a communal building for cooking/dining and bathing. That way the homes could remain simple, 1-3 room structures (no plumbing needed!) It could be run for fairly cheap by the state and give these families a safe place to live until they can get back onto their feet.

I worry about those puppies someone left in a cart - I wonder how long they left them there :/ A spay/neuter program needs to help these people get their dogs fixed...too many puppies there.

man, sign up for a semester of jr college, get $3000 of pell grant, which pays for your actual tuition and fees. They'll also give you a $6k loan, that you can use as you see fit.. Use 2k of it to set up a mini-van to live in. If you move it at 10 pm and 7 am, every day, at least half a mile, nobody will notice you. Dont sleep in the same spot more than once a week, and leave immediately if anyone notices you. Dont have living/sleeping gear visible, keep it below the bottom of your windows and cover it with old blankets. Dont have curtains. Install your own window tinting, with stuff from Loew's. It's cheap and easy to do. If you get hassled too much to continue, move to the mainland and live up north for the summer, down south for the winter. A guy that I know did this for 2 years, saved up 30k, and used it to marry a fiiipina dentist, who paid him 35k cash per year for 3 years, until she became a US citizen and they divorced. By then, he'd used his third year of college loans and money from her to buy several big old houses and turned them in lots of small, weekly rental rooms. Now he clears 60k a year, and a property management company checks on his properties and his managers. Now he travels the US in his van and has a ball, no worries.
If you are Hawaiian you should be able to camp anywhere, govt run portable toilets and showers should be available 24-7 and flea markets should be allowed to be opened and run by artist/tenants.
