    Best tutorials out there. Excellent description of all the little tips and techniques. And at the speed I think it was meant to be but not making the painter feel rushed. I usually watch tutorials several times and then try it completely on my own but this one I’m going to try and paint along. Thank you!!

      Good idea Vicki. Watching the steps over will help your muscle memory. Like doing a new task becomes easier with practice. Maybe just tape the horizon line and paint the sky first - keeping the 'sea' area dry. The once you have that sorted watch the video over and tackle the sea. Take your time and sketch the wave shape and try not to lose it! - Have fun - paul 🥰😃😎

    Happy New Year, Paul!🎉I was just going through your channel, looking for something to paint tomorrow, to start off 2023. I’ve painted a couple of seascapes and they turned out fine but I’m definitely much more comfortable painting mountains. I just love the colors in this painting so I’m stepping outside of my comfort zone and will start this tomorrow. I may have to paint it twice because I have a feeling my mom will want this one. She and I took many trips to Maui and Kauai together but haven’t been for a few years due to her health(she’s 88). Our favorite thing to do was sit on the lanai, watch the waves and talk. Thanks for the inspiration!

      Hi Amy - first off 'Happy New Year' 🥰🥰🥰 Ah what a lovely though sitting by the sea. I do that often but here in the UK its usually blowing a hollie and freezing cold. But bracing all the same. No wonder seascapes are in my blood! This video has a few good pointers and the colours are optional. Getting the basic shape and angles are key so have fun. II'm working on the next video today and guess what - its a seascape! _ Big art hugs for us here - Paul p.s. big Green Day fan too. Great painting music 😎😎

      @@PaulRansonArt I just finished this painting. I may have cursed you a few times during the process so I apologize 😉 Ok, it wasn't that bad. It looks good...from a distance 😜 My problem with seascapes is that I always seem to put the wave a little too low on the canvas so I don't end up with as much beach as I should. But, I did well with the angles, the eye of the wave, the rocks and the water lines on the beach. I'm not happy with my foam on the edges of the wave. You explained everything perfectly, it's just my weakness that I need to work on. I'm looking forward to Ocean Sunrise, however, since it doesn't have a wave😁🌊

    At present I am trying to , I'm afraid copy your pastel seas, so far I've gone too weak on the bubble gum pink in the sky, so long as I blend it well, would it be ok to re do that bit? Otherwise it makes the whole scene look a lavender colour instead of the pink shade, which is the part that attracted me, I must have been too cautious mixing the pink shade. It looked darker when I first laid it down, but unless I over blended it into the liquid white when I was putting it on the canvas, that the only reason I can think that its too pale .
    I know it doesn't matter exactly what colour the picture is, but when I'm trying to produce one colour and another evolves it rather spoils the personal concept. As I've told you befor this is the first oil painting I've ever done, so very much still learning, your tutorials are amazing , I really enjoy them.
    Thanks Sue
    Any advice gratefully received

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  Год назад +1

      Absolutly Sue - Treat the first colour a tint to kill off the white of the canvas. Just work another layer of pink over the first layer. If I need to do this I make sure the first layer is dry. It might take a little more work but experiment with adding a tiny (and I mean tiny) drop of liquid clear into the pink to make it flow over a dry canvas. If the lavender is still too dominant scrub a little titanium white over it to take the edge off it. Let some peek through as background clouds. BTW, don't try using liquid white for this . Its more oil than pigment and will make a soggy mess. 😍😎

    • @susanhunt4866
      @susanhunt4866 Год назад

      I'm good at soggy messes, they come naturally, don't need training or practice for that!!

  • @susanhunt4866
    @susanhunt4866 Год назад +1

    Paul I have contacted you before, you may remember and you were very helpful. I have been trying to do my own version of the pastel sea painting you did. I have done some of it but I think I haven't been generous enough with the colours, it so far looks rather more than pastel indeed it looks far too pale!!! Can I add further colour over what I've done so far, also the actual sea bit seems far more blue than yours even though on the palette it looks a lovely lavender colour but when put against the sky colour it doesn't work for me, should I add more crimson to the mix?
    I am still very much a beginner with oils, done water colours, Acrylics and pastels over the years, but want to get the hang of these oils, it's very different in use to the other paints I have used. Maybe I'm not loading the brush with enough paint, or it's not fluid enough .
    Sorry to ask what may seem to be a silly question but I need the answers before I can properly progress. I'm sure other beginners don't want to appear to ask silly questions , but if you don't know, you need to know.
    Many thanks
    Sue

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  Год назад +1

      Hi Susan - there are no silly questions just unanswered ones. So, lets take your questions a bit at a time. Learning how much paint to use etc comes with practice. From experience most folk who come from a background with other mediums esp. watercolour tend to be a little more frugal with colour. So your in good company! Once your oil painting has dried you can over paint it with more colour. Very much like glazing. However, I usually suggest setting it aside for reference and painting a second version. Then you have something to compare with other paintings. Again, colour mixtures will need experimentation. Whats looks good on the palette often looks very different on the painting. You see me often dab a little colour on a painting then stand back to consider if its right or not. As for fluid enough I think its best not to over thin oil paint - another trait from watercour painting where oils are more oil than paint if your not careful.
      So , in summary. Paint a second one and make small changes and check your progress. If its not right then wipe it back or off and start again. But always have fun 😎😎😊

    • @susanhunt4866
      @susanhunt4866 Год назад

      I can certainly say I am having fun. Being a pensioner I have to go easy with canvases,but what I tend to do is, if I have a small canvas, which this case I have, one I'm not happy with, I paint it over with the same colour gesso to in effect give me a canvas back. I use that for colour testing.
      So at the moment I have the pic I need to change and for colour reference I have the small one with the same colours on from the same brush in an inch wide marking, so I can use that. I deliberately haven't gone back to the picture again yet, I've had it looking at me all the time, so I can see where the bits are I don't like, and because it's a room distance away I can look at it better. I don' t believe in rushing things. As soon as I had done the sky and sea on my main painting, it really shouted at me somethings wrong, that's why I stopped there, so I could study and hopefully put it right.
      Hopefully I'm doing the right thing.
      Thank you Paul for your advice, very valuable to me. I'll get it how I want it eventually, but as I've said this is my first venture into oils after 60 years of water colour, so changes come a bit more slowly!!

    I came a bit unstuck putting the wave in! Oops, it ended up a bit of a mess with the top of my wave parallel to the horizon . So I've cleaned it off and I shall have another go. It's a bit disappointing as I had managed to get the sky and main sea right, but it is the wave definitely wasn't going to stay there, it was totally offensive to me.

      If I had a £ for every one I scrapped off Susan. Its part of the learning curve but do save one or two so you can look back at them in future. They will be the ones that ground you and show you where the improvements have been made. And, when one goes wrong (and they willl trust me) you can look back and say 'I've come a long way' and not feel so bad. Lastly do a little line drawing of the wave on a scrap of paper. Then follow the lines on the canvas. 😍😎

I think my easel has a lot to answer for, it's not very steady, as I am in a wheelchair trying to get close enough is a bit of an issue, so sometimes I have to sit sideways on, not the best I know, but reaching across my leg and then the front wheels, it's a bit of a challenge, as I'm sure you can understand. But seeing the top of the wave parallel to the horizon it just had to go!!

      I made the mistake I think for many reasons by using daylight. In have to use an area in my lounge because of my disability, but as I have a very big window in there it seemed a good idea at the time, it wasn't my intention to still be doing this length of time later, nature stepped in , then Autumn, and now it Christmas. Still if I have to wait until the spring so be it!!

    Hi Paul, because I've been poorly again, the base liquid has dried, but I also need to increase the value of the sea colour that Lavender colour, I didn't put enough Pthalo blue with the alizarins crimson, it's only like a smigin, tiny amount, but it will make all the difference to my eye, if you know what I mean. Because I started the whole canvas with the liquid white, I certainly can't use that again because it will dilute the colour, can I use the liquid clear to do what I need to do, just to return to a wet into wet surface, otherwise I will be trying to dry paint it, and for my taste that wouldn't work how I would like it to.
    Sorry to keep bothering you, it's just unfortunate I have bad days every so often, let's face it we all do, sometimes it doesn't upset your daily activities, but with me it does
    Thanks Sue

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  Год назад

      Hi Sue, No problem please ask questions because someone else may have the same challenges. Yes you can go back in with liquid clear. But keep in mind the soft pastel blending effects from liquid white won't be there. Your retouching with lavender will need a little drop of Titanium white to keep the colour soft and pastel. But work slowly and don't be afraid to wipe it off and try again.
      I get all sorts of things interupt my painting days so getting use to painting over several sessions can be a good thing.
      Just keep having enough good days to enjoy your art - Paul 🥰😎

    Hi Paul still doing the pastel Seascape like yours, but had to take a break as I've been rather unwell, unfortunately this often interrupts everything, but at least I didn't end up in A &E this time.
    My Titanium White is very thick in the tube, I'm wanting to do the highlights on the sea, but as it is it would end up like a big blob, don't want that, so if I added a small amount of liquid white to the chosen amount until it's workable, would that work ok. I know the brush cleaner is also a paint thinner, but it would lose the value of the colour I think.
    Can you correct me if I'm wrong please?
    One day I'm want to send you a pic of the result of my work "Pastel Seas" purely for some constructive comments, as this is a first time with oils paints, I think I'm shy of using colour, possibly because I'm unsure of myself. Learning a lot from doing this, not all about painting either. You learn about yourself I've discovered, I really love painting, it's so relaxing with an end result.
    Many thanks

I try to get down there as often as I can, if someone will take me, so I can observe the waves, triggered by your picture. As I live here, there is no excuse not to go and look at them and the way the are constructed. I adore the sea anyway, used to sail with my Uncle a lot when I was a kid, it's much more difficult now in a wheelchair to get onto the beach because of the stones, you cannot wheel or be wheeled over them, there are a few runways but not enough really.

      Hi Susan - yes your right its Worthing Beach! We live a short drive away and drop in for a bracing walk now and again. Its funny. Even though we've lived here for over 20 years ( former Londoner ) it still feels like we're on holiday! 😍😍😎😎@@susanhunt4866

    Well my painting didn't work so well. I had a hard time with the waves and the fluffy white foam. I ended up with a mud mix and a poor attempt. What caused the mud mix? Did I put too much liquid white on,???? I felt as though I didn't. But I used a canvass board could that be the proglem

      Hi Vicki - yes the dreaded mud mixing. Your not alone and it can happen so easily. If you check out my links in the bio you can drop me a message and a copy of the painting on my Instagram page. I'll have a peek at it and see if we can come up with an answer. I prefer a stretched canvas or one of my paper DIY 'canvases' taped to a canvas for a little extra bounce. Canvas boards are by their nature hard and unyielding. Difficult for a 'new to oils' person to paint delicately sometimes. Look forward to seeing your painting - Paul 😃😃
