    Dear Ash,
    again a helpful contribution. Unfortunately, I also lost a few handwritten diaries. Last year I started to write down the lost memories again.
    With a fountain pen and real paper, of course.
    So everything lives on.
    Best regards,
    Mathias 😎

    I am 65 and have lead a very adventurous life. I would love to have even a basic diary of my exploits. I push it on young people.
    On the other side I enjoyed every moment and was engulfed in absorbing the moment. Free from any modern distraction like a phone. I think the way to do it is be in the moment, be in one place, of one mind…be all there. Then later reflect and write it down. Very good topic and video.

    Very interesting video, once again. For reasons best known to themselves, our company gave every member of staff a copy of a similar product, “The Head Plan”, in their Christmas hamper. It seems to emphasise planning more than retrospective recording of details and events. Like you, I’m persuaded that I might just give it a go.

    I kept a diary when I was younger. Started when I was at primary school just writing snippets of what I did during the day in little notebooks. By 12 I was writing in a specific diary, but after a couple of years I switched to a dedicated hardback notebook as I found the pre-allotted space in diaries frustrating. I lapsed writing when I started university, and only really started again a couple of years ago when I started my own company and wanted something I could look back on to check details of events and actions. Initially fountain pen in a hardback notebook, but in summer this year I switched to an iPad. Not very happy with the feel of the Apple pencil, even with various covers/tips etc but the convenience of the iPad is very good. I'm hoping that tip technology will improve. Still experimenting with different apps too.

    I wish I had the patience and the discipline to keep a diary, however I do not have that. I guess I'm also afraid my life isn't interesting enough to write about. I will certainly give it a try, using your tips. Especially in situations that are stressful and occupy my mind.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 Год назад

      It really doesn't take patience of discipline to keep an ordinary diary/journal because there are no rules. I will say two things. One, every life is more than interesting enough for a journal. Far, far more because the whole point of a diary is what you think, feel, believe, and dream about. It's about your goals, your hopes for the future.
      And two, I guarantee a journal will greatly increase your chances of making your goals and dreams comes true. In fact, some journals, such as bullet journals, are intended for just this purpose. But so is a regular journal, in what I think is a better, more natural way. It is no coincidence that the vast majority of famous historical people, and of highly successful people in every walk of life, kept/keep journals.
      But, really, there are no rule. If you can write one page today, you have a journal. When you write the next page is entirely up to you. It can be tomorrow, or next week, or next months. However you do it, all is well, and it most certainly, without doubt, aid you in building a successful life.

    The Mind Journal is also something that has popped up on many of my social feeds. What happens beyond the 3 months, or when the book is full? Is this the first book of a series or simply 'the' book to reset your mind and writing habit and start you on a journalling journey after which a normal notebook will suffice? Very helpful video indeed.

      It is a catalyst to change your thinking and set your on a path of self discovery - well, this is what happened to me. I am presently half way through another change journal which has been produced by Leuchtturm, which is even better and actionable than this Mind Journal. Well worth checking out. I will do a full review video when I have completed the experience.

    interesting... I've kept a daily diary since May 2010... and have also done my life story - literally tens of thousands of pages of word documents...
    I have them in word documents as I'm able to search on key events, and each document of my diary covers a single month and have them stored in folder structures of each year...i have various snippets from social media etc pasted in them, and I've also taken some 100k photos since june 2002 and store them in seperate folder structures of the 'year' and subfolders of each location / event etc..
    and my life story are documents for each decade up until my 30s (30's is a bit sparse - but have a lot of emails etc since then)... and I've been catching up on my photos recently and interesting to cross reference some random ones with what i typed up in my diary in recent years..
    my lady thought it was a bit strange when i was typing away when we first met - as I was initially a bit embarrassed to tell her, but she likes the idea of it and in amazed that i can remember things from my past, whereas she can;t seem to remember much about hers.. :(

      That is an amazing account of recording one's activities over a vast span of time. I imagine the introspection that this sort of activity has provided you with great personal insight over the many years you have been a diarist.

    • @TheWeardale1
      @TheWeardale1 2 года назад

      @@TheChapsGuide thanks, well it is addictive, and ultimately only takes around 10-15 minutes a day - and when you have an office job it's easily doable.. :) as i had a spell some years ago when it was quiet at work and i started on my life story too..and i know I repeat things in my documents (better than not to have it..) - as a snippet may pop into my head and I'll type it up, but it's also interesting to see how ones perspective of an event (childhood for example) alters as you get older...strangely my childhood events don't have much emotional feelings in them but rather 'information' - and this is something I've tried to remedy in my diary with me typing events there and then..
      and going back to the facebook stuff - I'm a member of some local (well to where i lived as a child) - and there's often photos being posted of the 70 / 80s which bring back memorys...and being in lockdown / working from home during the last couple of years gives you extra time to reflect on such events...

    I believe there are serious differences between journals and diaries, and this is evident when reading a few dozen historical journals and diaries. Significant differences.
    Maybe it's difference in your area of the world, but never, ever did any man I know ever say he kept a diary. It was always a journal. So it is with me. FOR ME, I journal more like a mix of Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci (Without the genius, unfortunately) Winston Churchill, and Mark Twain than in the way most think of a diary or journal.
    I'm too old to worry very much about the future now, but I've tried systems several times that had similarities to the Mind Journal. They never worked at all, and neither does the mind journal. Still, I have recommended the Mind Journal because I really do just about everything in it, only without the structured exercises, if that makes sense. That's just how my mind works.
    I spent thirty years earning a living as a writer, and I can attest to how much keeping a journal helps. I can also say there is strong scientific evidence to say that not only is keeping a handwritten journal far more beneficial than keeping a digital journals, there is similar, and perhaps even more compelling evidence that creative writing benefits hugely when handwritten. In short, we do not "write" letters and words, we DRAW them, and in doing so we fire up the creative center of the brain automatically.
    This is not to say that great fiction can't be written digitally, only that the process is easier when it's analog. Oddly, for reasons no one can yet explain, a manual typewriter works almost as well. Electris typewriters and keyboards do not work at all. With these, you have to do all the work yourself. Anyway, that's why I own a Namiki Maki-e and a Namiki Chinkin. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. My wife seems to believe I could have written just as well with much cheaper fountain pens, but the IRS actually sided with me, more or less, so she decided not to poison my coffee.

      I absolutely agree, I love the motto of Leuchtturm journals "Writing by hand is thinking on paper". I utterly subscribe to the theory that creativity flows much differently when one uses a pen opposed to a machine to capture one's thoughts, emotions and ideas. I keep a journal and it has become a friend, confidant and conspirator in all life's greatest ventures. Nothing beats the joy of a fountain pen poised before a clean sheet of good quality paper..... bliss

    I wouldn't call journaling a "trend"...humans have been doing this for literally thousands of years. We just call it journaling today.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 Год назад

      You're right. It is not a trend, not a fad, and not at all unusual. The vast, vast majority, of successful and/or famous people have been keeping journals for centuries. You could spend a lifetime reading them all. I've read nearly two hundred and haven't put a dent in all that exists. Perhaps more important, so have millions of ordinary, everyday people. But most diaries never reach the public view.
