I go hiking every weekend, while I don’t stay overnight, just those few hours on my own in nature just helps rebalance myself. Great exercise for the body and mind

Funnily enough, I've just back from my woodland retreat, accompanied by my Explorer 36 and (my Dad's old tipple too) a bottle of 'Grouse! Making the time to do nothing (as our increasingly frenetic society would call it) is so important. Splitting logs, sweeping, thinking, watching wildlife and NO SCREENS! is incredibly valuable. Well done for sharing this quiet, helpful advice in a way many chaps will connect with.

    Good advice.
I often have 3 or 4 books on the go.
    Fiction and non-fiction.
Cutting the grass can be very relaxing!

A motorcycle ride does it for me. Also got a little summerhouse at the bottom of the garden. Hifi, telly, easychair, cigar and a drink. I'm currently reading "The Nazi Hunters" by Damien Lewis. Recommended.

what a perfect ending to a brillian mini-series, ash (...and right before summer, when most of us will go on vacation, excellent timing)! i really can relate to your thoughts and will keep these in mind especially when going to turkey in 2 weeks time, to our retreat (less woody, more salty!). for the next rationpack adventure, i can recommend trying the austrian one if you can get a hand on, which was pretty good back in my military days (late 90s... however, don't think it got worse meanwhile). thx for the video - i quite enjoyed as always - and keep up the great work! cheers

A "very relaxing" video, Ash - thanks!
Reading is one of my favourite pastimes, although I often have to "go backwards" in my books as I can never remember what I read the day before...
So increasing my knowledge "may take some time"!

Excellent musings Mr. Ash. There is no question that we are our own 'stress control board' and too few people take charge before it's too late! Even those of us who may not have the privilege of escaping to one's country estate as yourself(I could not help it) a mere disconnecting of electronic equipment and becoming 'unavailable' temporarily can do wonders for the unhealthy psychological vibrations which seem to never switch off! It is simply a matter of finding what works for you and remember the saying: 1- Don't sweat the small stuff and 2- It's all small stuff in the end! BTW, I must say those reading glasses you are sporting suit you very well and have a distinct 'Ipcress File' vibe , cheers!

I love walking deep into the countryside, away from the sound of traffic and the city. I find the lack of background noise, apart from nature, extremely relaxing.
Repetitive tasks are a great way to meditate/relax. It's about finding balance; doing the task mindfully and getting lost in a state of reverie.
Just found this channel BTW and loving the content.

This is a problem for a lot of people nowadays. People are so caught up in consuming digital media like videos, movies, music, that it's very difficult to find something to keep yourself busy. I'm guilty of it too. I have two teenage children and my wife and I are find ourselves always looking for a holliday location where there is WiFi. That being said we are not the staying at home kinda people, so we are going out alot on holidays. Because of this my children are getting a cultural upbringing. (I hope)
I'm wondering off. I also like to read and doing choirs like cleaning, setting up the BBQ, cooking, etc. I also like woodcarving.
Thanks for the tips, Ash. Have a nice day!

Hi Ash, I've only just started watching your channel having watched several sartorial channels and I found yours by chance. Just like you I love good clothes and shoes. and having been bought up in rural Derbyshire I love the countryside and nature too (I'm into bushcraft, fishing and hill walking) loved this video and I was just thinking, that you mentioned whiskey but not your pipe? Do you still relax with a pipe? I recently took up the pipe and find it so relaxing. What are your thoughts about it.
    Cheers.
    Mark.

Hi Mark, Great to hear from you. I must admit, the pipe is merely a visual prop for my videos and I personally do not smoke - I do drink Whiskey however!

Wonderful ideas there Ash... Time in nature is very special. I moved to Scotland from Somerset a few years back. Nature seems very close up here, and even though I miss the south west, this is wonderful too..
On a non life advice subject, can I ask a watch question? Have you ever seen the white dial 36mm roman numeral datejust? I've put my name down for it, but not sure if blue would suit best...I just love the crisp dial of the white, and the fact that there is no lume, just solid markers
(I'm going with smooth bezel and oyster bracelet).... and then if I like the DJ, I'm thinking next watch some day will be fluted on jubilee , black or blue dial
    Thank you!
Edit: for some context, I don't have any luxury watches, just my G shock square.. I did buy an 1861 Speedy from that AD 3 years ago but ended up selling. Then had an Aqua Terra .. sold...Hamilton Khaki... sold!!! I have struggled to find the right one watch (in reality, I will want more in the future.... which is the slippery slope you mention in another video) , but after trying on 36mm palm dial DJ the other day, the size is just beautiful.... so yes..... I guess this is specifically a white dial 36mm question, but also about the DJ in general - I know you love your DJ so I'm hoping you can comment on this dilemma

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  2 года назад +1

I love white dial watches, specifically due to the easy legibility and partly because they are just so damn chic and classically elegant. I think the 36mm DJ is the absolute epitome of class and style for a man's watch and the white dial is perhaps the most elegant. I went for a blue dial due to my own love of the colour blue, but nothing beats a simple white dial for elegance - a really great choice that is timeless and will never age (unlike many of the trendy colours that Rolex has released in recent years).
I have bored people about the DJ for years - it is an elegant watch that looks great in any situation, yet is as tough (if not tougher) than most so-called sports watches. 36mm is the perfect and original size despite the constant creep towards ever big watches. A great choice sir - I prefer the DJ on a jubilee myself, but it is equally at home on the oyster!

    • @Valera_Scotland
      @Valera_Scotland 2 года назад

@@TheChapsGuide Ash thank you so much for taking the time to write a lengthy response. I really appreciate it...
Your reply has given me confidence. I think that as a first Rolex , going with the white dial is the right choice.
I did try the jubilee on, as well as the Oyster, and I did prefer the solid feel of the Oyster.... however I may reconsider, if the jubilee white dial is the only one my AD finds....
The blue is also a solid choice, and I can't see a problem with owning both dials some day! Maybe if I get this white, you would consider doing a review?

You've asked for suggestions for your channel and I think a topic that gets just briefly touched on or missed all together before investing heavily in an expensive wardrobe. That is getting your physique where you want it. Let's face it, having a big ol' bubba gut sticking out of a well made shirt kills the look more than wearing the wrong shoes with it.
This is important for every man over 30 because it hits nearly all of us at this age. When we're scrolling through the latest fashions I realized the one thing we're not considering is, yeah, that garment looks great but look at the physique of the model who's wearing it. This doesn't get touched on much because it's more than just forking over cash and knowing what goes with what. It's a lot of hard work. You're going to have to give up the carbs and sugar. You have to do the math to keep in a calorie deficit, work your core and do some bench presses for your shoulders to make your garments drape well. It's a whole area of study all together but it goes hand in hand with all the goals one wants to achieve by dressing well and proper grooming.

You make a great point and I agree. I have also endeavoured to follow your thinking over the years - in so much as I always strive to maintain a weight and size that is conducive to looking good when clothed. I do try and pass along this message in most of my style videos, without seeking to be hurtful or alienating to those chaps, who may not conform to traditional views on size. Thanks you for your comments.

Ash, not to be a negative Nancy, but the title card is somehow off-center, and it's driving me a little batty! I think the suit logo isn't quite centered compared to the channel name. The channel name may also be off-center, I'm not sure. I'm sure a quick edit will fix it just fine!
