How I Organise My Chest Freezer | A Thousand Words

- Chest freezers can become black holes in which everything is jumbled and it's hard to find what you need - food gets wasted and it's a source of frustration. When I got my huge chest freezer I made sure to devise a system that would keep it well organised and functional. I want my freezer to ensure that I save money on food (by being able to shop the sales and buy in bulk) rather than waste money on food that will eventually be discarded due to being lost in the pit and overlooked. I hope you find my system helpful! The freezer is currently less full than usual as we've just had Christmas as I had extra food expenses then so I haven't been stocking up as much as I usually do.
These are the plastic bins I used: www.bunnings.co.nz/malloy-sta...

Why are you SO brilliant??? I never even thought of bins inside of the freezer *runs immediately out to shops to buy bins for freezer* 🙌
LOL I'm glad you like the idea!
This is by far the most organised freezer I’ve ever seen - it makes my brain happy haha.
LOL thank you, it makes my brain happy too :)
Your video just inspired me
I was going to get rid of my chest freezer for a upright freezer but now I see even a chest freezer can be organized.
Still watching in 2021. Thanks for inspiring me to clean out and organize my flat freezer!!👍🏽❤️
This was great! I've got to begin a hunt for baskets like yours, it would be so nice to get my black hole freezer looking like yours. I'm amazed those labels stay put, I would have thought they'd pop off in the cold. Thank you for taking the time to film this for us, Jen!
The labels were new, I hadn't thought of them coming off in the cold and they have, in fact, started lifting. I will have to go back to the way I labeled them when I first got them, which was using a tile marker (China marker) in white and just writing on the bins.
It sure seems easy to have a beautifully organized freezer when it's 3/4th empty like that! Mine is so full it doesn't even close properly, and that's without any "wasted" space from bins and such. Hence the reason I ended up here.
You're fortunate to have that much food.
I keep a deep freezer stocked with sale items too! When it’s a bit low I load it up with bags of ice and water bottles to keep the freezer from using too much electricity. Yours is beautifully organized.
That is a great idea, I really should do that. I hadn't realised how empty our freezer was until I filmed this video.
The only thing missing is a Food saver machine. It will solve that white frost on your packaging, and allow items to last longer in your freezer. I will normally take items out of store packaging and put in vacuum seal bags and then label and seal. Yesterday I cooked a pack of chicken legs and thighs that got overlooked by me in my small freezer for a year and I'm still alive.
No freezer burn or strange taste. I'm now the proud owner of a large upright. Will use the basket idea for my new upright.
I have deep freezer envy.....thanks for sharing😊
I know; me, too! Jen has done an amazing job with her freezer. I wish she'd come help with mine, LOL!
Thanks Jen! Going to clean and reorganise our deep freezer and fridges in Friday. Our weather is forecast to reach 44C, so will be a great day to have my head stuck in a freezer!
Yikes, that is insanely hot!!
This is wonderfully inspiring! My freezers are smaller and I feel like that's making it harder. I really need to clean them out and and do some organizing as close as I can come to yours because they are very frustrating and I'm wasting a lot of money. Thank you for sharing your terrific system. I love that Grant was able to cut your baskets down to make everything fit perfectly.
I hope you're able to arrive on a solution that works well for your freezer x
Me, too! Thank you. :)
we have a small chest freezer which i've divided stuff but is way better smarter than mine, thank you i and learned alot
Great tips thank you for sharing. You are so organise. 👍🏿
❤️You have such great ideas!!
Thank you!
Love this video Jen! I need to find some of those bins ASAP!
Have a measure of your freezer, you might need a different size. If you want these particular ones here they are: www.bunnings.co.nz/malloy-stack-and-nest-bin-32l-assorted-colour_p00785054
Yay love this vid have always wondered how to organise a chest freezer. Thank u.
Glad you found it helpful - thanks for watching :)
Wow what a neat and tidy freezer, awsome
Thank you :)
Good organizing tips... and also comically grim! Thanks
I am moving in a new and was looking for ideas on how to organize my chest freezer.
So thanks
I love this video. Such great ideas. I went from a 17 cf upright to a 7 cf chest. It's so hard to organize and I have to take everything out to find anything. I'm going to measure the inside and purchase some small bins to organize and hopefully it will work for me too!
Glad you enjoyed this video. I've recently uploaded another one as we changed freezers; you can see it here: ruclips.net/video/vZVRqUItAm0/видео.html
Hi, I just saw this video this afternoon, now at 7:30 pm, I have a whole deep freezer organized with 7 bins, woh, what took me so long
I like this topic!! 😃💝
Thanks for sharing. Where did you get the bins from? I need something like that fir my freezer.
Thanks much for the idea.
Organized....great Jenifer..
I love the bin system. Right now my two freezers are the black hole! I hate wasting food so I'm heading out today to look for similar bins. Thanks for sharing!
Great video Jen : ) I’m soooo going to do this..really beats scratching around and taking things out just to find your item way at the bottom..and then having to pack everything back again.
I'm so glad you like the idea :) Happy organising!
very nice and tidy
Thanks a lot dear you are so genius
I love a good organised space. It's made me want to organise our freezers better. Question for you, if you batch cook where do you keep those meals?
I haven't done any batch cooking in a while, but when I do it goes into the top left basket with the bacon and sausages - if I have too many meals then the bacon / sausages go into the bins with the pork / lamb.
Will the plastic bins crack due to the cold? I just bought some from Dollar Tree.
Brilliant! I love my deep freeze for stockpiling all my special offer and clearance bargains. Where do you store ice? My husband buys giant bags of it and they take up a lot of room. We do need them though as our summer is so hot. 42 degrees today!
We don't buy ice, but if I did I would probably dedicate one of the baskets to it.
Love love love this! So happy I found your channel ~ been watching a few with chest freezers, I'm "vertically challenged" 😁 and keep thinking I'll fall in reaching for something and never get out! Would you please give the measurement of the bins? So I can see if I can find here in the US. Thank you so much for sharing this! 💞 Katherine
Here are the bins I bought, but of course freezers are sized differently so they might not work in yours. I'd recommend measuring your freezer and finding bins to fit. www.bunnings.co.nz/malloy-stack-and-nest-bin-32l-assorted-colour_p00785054
Dimensions in millimeters: W:450 H:360 L:260
A Thousand Words Thank you for getting back to me! Yes, I will take the measurement, but I really liked the bins you used ~ will see if we have them here as they seemed really sturdy.
This is exactly what I want to do! Please please let me know where you got those baskets that slide! That’s such a brilliant idea!
The baskets came with the (second hand) freezer but perhaps you can find some on eBay or similar?
Brilliant organization... 👑👑what is the capacity of your freezer? Did u buy those sliding suspended metal baskets separately or they came together with the freezer ? Where did you buy them? I believe only one sliding basket comes with fridge.. Reply plz...
Sorry, no idea of the capacity - it's pretty big though. The baskets came in it. We bought the freezer second hand.
I absolutely love this!! Can I please ask how much these were? I really want to go to Bunnings tomorrow and do this
These are the boxes I used, but please measure your freezer first as they may not suit the freezer you have. www.bunnings.co.nz/malloy-stack-and-nest-bin-32l-assorted-colour_p00785054
So very organized Jen! Power outages are a issue here in the mountains where we live. Sometimes we can be without power for several days. Do you have a backup power source? Or are power outages not a problem where you live? This is the one major concern that holds me back from getting, and filling a chest freezer. Thanks for sharing! Have s great day, Nicole
Same here....in the US Midwest. We had a 5 day black out from a freak flood last summer. I lost most of the food in the freezer. Now I'm afraid to restock as full as it was which is really silly because I should be using it. No generator yet. Prices shot up after all the disasters we had across the country so we have to budget for one. But it's become a necessity now (I believe) and not an 'option' anymore.
Oh dear, that is no good! We don't usually have power outages and when we do it's not for long. Chest freezers stay cold without power for a while, especially if they are full, but not for several days.
Oh no, that is so frustrating!
did the freezer comewith all 3 suspended baskets? in the usa, we only get 1...the baskets are handy
Yes, we bought it second hand and the baskets were included. Perhaps you could find more on eBay?
I recently bought a 700L Chest Freezer, we call it the coffin lol! Your nice and organised but with chest freezers only way to be otherwise you cannot find Stuff. I bought containers for my freezer and have two slide baskets. I have a very large bin for Chickens, whole, one on top for other chicken cuts, a bin for beef steaks with a small bin on top with mince, I have a pork bin. On top I have smaller bins for seafood and frozen fruit. I have a shelf in my chest so it holds bread, bagels, wraps, muffins etc. love the chest freezer. My fridge is like yours and in the freezer it holds frozen veg and products bought from supermarket in boxes. I buy bulk meat from Mega Meats, packing it is a night mare but well worth it and I shop Costco. I save a ton of money by not shopping for meat in the supermarket
I clicked on the link for the KMart sliding racks, but nothing happened.
Is it because we are in the US?
Possibly. I'd recommend measuring your freezer and looking locally for bins that fit it, as mine might not fit your freezer anyway. All the best.
Where to buy these xtra hanging baskets as in my freezer i have only 1 basket.
I'm sorry, I don't know where to get them. Maybe try eBay?
Try Lowe’s or Home Depot... back by the chest freezers.
Do you have a recipe vid of the ham bone soup?
No, I just boil the ham bone with soup ingredients (split peas etc). No real recipe.
I always wonder on the cost and benefit of a freezer because it actually consume quite a lot of electricity.
We didn't notice a significant change in our energy bills once we got the freezer.
Chest freezer consumes about 350 - 900 kWh electricity per year depending on your model and volume. Since unit electricity cost is about NZD 0.29/kWh so that is between NZD 100 - 260 more electricity cost per year i guess.
The famine is coming.
You are organized! Have you considered getting a food saver? Im getting a freezer and I already have a food saver and nothing ever goes to waste that's why I like it 🙄
I've thought about it but the single use plastic puts me off a bit.
ORGANIZE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
The opening of this video was really dark. haha
You guys don’t eat ice cream?
I get it now and then, and it usually stays in the fridge freezer in the kitchen.
Terrible intro. I stopped watching immediately
