He took Casey Neistat video course and he improved 100 folds.
Tell him to wear a helmet on his pretty lil head.
If any UK viewer is interested, Dan and the Chateau are featured in the Channel 4 programme called Help! We bought a Village, Monday to Friday @ 5-6 pm. Hasn't yet appeared, just saw Dan in the openening sequence of last Fridays show.
Oh cool!
Yes be on this week ❤
Yes noticed that today, recognised the chateaux wall at the top standing on its own!
Thank you Phil!😊
Thank you for the reminder Phil. I've set to record just so I don't miss it 👍
That trees been driving me nuts for weeks, so glad its been removed - though I now realise it wasnt quite as simple a task as I was thinking.
Eye protection, dust mask, and lower back protection are really important so you can complete the château with no problems. (Just saying.) The job you’re doing is incredible, take care of yourself. I can’t wait to see the final results 😊 great job 👏
Amen to that.
Dear Dan, ❤ as we ‘oldies’ watch your amazing physical feats, 😮we know it seems admirable right now to be super independent to do all this physical stuff on your own, every time you do it, pushing your body beyond what it is capable of, you are one pulled muscle or bulged disc away from not just putting a major halt to all your dreams, but maybe even a lifetime of agony! Believe me, as an old retiree with a very damaged body, lifelong pain is not worth it! 😢
I see a hernia in his future, at the very least.
The winch makers may claim a 5 ton lift, but the rope on it will probably break well before that. As a yachtsman I know about ropes. As an example of a good quality rope, Liros 16mm braid on braid polyester halyard rope has a breaking strain rating of 5750Kg. The rope on that winch looks to be smaller than 16mm and has a more open weave that suggests that it is more stretchy, possibly nylon or polypropylene. To get the full lifting capacity of that winch it may need a better and thicker rope, or a change to wire cable.
Dont think he will go further than cpl tens or hundreds kilo.
Plus the supporting wood beams would break or the wall supporting the beams supporting the wicnhch would break before the rope.
I love all the smart people on this channel.❤
Pretty sure that was cable not rope, could be wrong. Cable that size would break much much over 5 tons.
As a fellow yachtsman. This is probably an off brand dyneema rope, and it can easily handle these loads. They have less spring in them than steel cables and are especially well suited for heavy lifts. I use this on my 50foot, 23m sailing height sailboat. I wouldn’t worry, it seems legit as long as it is not chafing over an edge
If ya dogs were huskies you could have em pull your stones about😂😂
"Nice Sunday evening thing!" says Dan - when the rest of us are sitting on our bottoms, in front of the TV, watching the Strictly results, Dan is working his backside off pulling out trees, and rebuilding his Chateau! Go for it Dan, the man, who always can. xxx
Dear Dan. You certainly are Hercules & Superman rolled into one creative person. Hope you exercise before you begin a construction day to keep you safer from experiencing horrible muscular aches with daily unbearable uncomfortable aches.
God Bless you always, as you continue restoring this Historical safe haven. 👏👍🙏🦋🌞☀️ Continue to be strong 💪
Nothing makes me happier than when I see you removing all the trees and vines growing out of the Chateau. It’s like you’re finally reclaiming it from the wild!
I have every faith in you Dan that you will work it out. The restoration is really coming along. You are putting new floors in at a record pace, so you can work on getting a roof on as well.
Seeing the size of the stones you're moving around, I can't help but think, he really loves the place.👍❤
and he loves to show us his strength.
He needs a set of LEWIS PINS! Those heavy stones already have the holes for the pins, so he can lift them easily. I hope he reads this and buys a set.
Agreed! & I can't help but think wouldn't it have been a lil easier (to move the stones), if he had used either a wheel Barrow or one of those trolley things on wheels that lifts stuff off the floors, safely!
But what were the pups barking at
I keep thinking Hernia 😮
I was exhausted watching you moving those heavy stones around. No back injuries etc., Phew! Be careful Dan with drilling, safety glasses please. We want you to be around to the end 😱🙏😁
You need to think about sealing off at least some of the window spaces for winter. Some batten and tough poly sheeting will do it. Or just a staple gun, where the frames remain in place. That short clip of the wind and rain showed how little work you’ll be able to do, once winter arrives.
Even salvaged shutters would help,
Sealing windows won't do a single thing without a roof.
Right, we know that is his goal, but he really hasn't mentioned windows yet, some seem to have a shutter, I think it may have been a bathroom, above the bath with the bees, either way, it's going to be cold in there
That wind and rain was part of Storm Babet. It developed off the Bay of Biscay about a week ago. It hit land in Cork, Ireland with 70mph winds and a months rain in a few hours. Exceptional flooding, even for a place accustomed to wet weather. It then travelled roughly 600 miles east across Ireland and England, before turning with the Channel to the North Sea, where it travelled another 600ish miles to Aberdeen. There it circled back on itself to cross Scotland. It continued to produce 80 mph winds in Orkney, 100 miles further north. Again it dumped at least 6 weeks worth of October rain levels in 2 days causing exceptional flooding in Aberdeenshire. I'm in Derry, near the North Coast of Ireland. We saw a.little rain, some strong winds but mostly it was just chilly. Its rare for us to get lucky like that. Where Dan is, I suspect he got the outer edges of the storm as Orkney and Shetland did. This wasn't normal winter weather.
Finally we were all worried since you used to post on the community page if there would be no video. Thank you for doing this for us on your day off.
I cringed when I saw you drilling that metal beam with all of those shards coming out, and you were not wearing safety glasses! I can tell you, from personal experience, that having a metal shard embedded in your eye is painful. It took six surgeries to remove all of one that landed in my eye at age thirteen. Wearing safety glasses might seem like a bother, but having a doctor digging in your eye six times while you are fully conscious is far worse! Please be careful!
Yeap. Safety glasses. Good masks. Gloves. Safety harness. Steel toe boots. Whatever.
10/10 can recommend 😅
Agreed
As a former supplier of safety equipment for Granger all of the stats on injuries are impressive!Be safe!
Ouch😢
Pls get smart Dan, if not for yourself for your boys.😊😢
Be sure you have a five ton platform, too. Long funny story about my cousin who failed to consider this in a similar situation.
Do tell...glad you said long funny story, and not 'tragic'.
Make sure you give the winch plenty of time to cool down between lifts because they overheat easily.
The two steels will act as a heat sink !!
And get a truckload of batteries.
OR, a hundred-amp hour lithium battery. Two of those would let you work all day. Ideally, you need an AC electric shop lift winch. Plug it in and forget it.
Big Dan I'm amazed at all the heavy work that you are getting done all alone, you're the man!!!! We'll see ya tomorrow!!
So glad you posted today. My day isn't complete without knowing what went on at the chateau that day. Gives me someth9ng to look forward to. Please wear goggles when your working with drills... Awesome show
I think you may have been an Egyptian in a former life, the way you use leverage and tipping points so well!
I said the same thing, amazing skills!!
I think that was an all-time first when Dan said "It wasn't safe ..." around the 3 minute mark.
Hey bud, now that you have a sufficient winch, you can set up a pulley system to help pull those stones up the stairs when you’re by yourself
Makes sense
He's got a 5 tonne winch but I doubt he'll get even one tonne on that floor.
@@PreservationEnthusiast a few pounds at a time he will.
@@PreservationEnthusiast He won't be lifting a tonne most probably 100kg (220lbs) at a time or less, I think he's just saying it's heavy duty, he could have dropped the hand crank winch on the hoist and used that to lift the stones up when he's finished with it "inside". I don't know about secret projects either (Unless Nick is doing that with Camron?) he wants to repair the walls in the Wing he's in so a temporary roof can go on or it will be a tough winter with not a lot going on, he got rained off two days already!?!
@@PreservationEnthusiast what material do you think he will be using that weighs a tonne ?
Great progress getting the new heavy duty wench installed Dan…looking forward to see what you and Nick accomplish working together!
Wench?!! Ha ha. Love that typo.😊😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I wondered what happened to the other winch. This whole project is amazing and terrifying. Like many of the other fans have said, stay safe! Thank you for taking us along and making the videos. 🎉🎉🎉❤🎉😮
Now we know who really built the Pyramids it was Dan's ancestors.
Great to see you safe after a short absence! Took my breath away looking through the hole for the winch! Had a hard time looking at the video when you were toppling the large stone on the porch. You could have toppled it on your feet (hope at least those were steel toed shoes). Nice progress! Glad Nick will be there to help.
Dan is the embodiment of the saying “where there is will, there is a way” !
🇨🇦
I'm so glad you got the winch, save your back to enjoy your chateau later.
Nothing worse than a tree in the wrong place. Great to hear that Nick is back on deck next week
the winch can take 5 tons but what you have it setting on (the floor) can not!
You know this?
There wouldn’t be anything that would even weigh 500kg
I know those pannels he uses as floors, not so strong and they deteriorated with water@@katherandefy
@@katherandefy 5 tons is the weight of 2 average SUVs. Do you think that floor can hold 2 SUVs?
@@jimmac1185 Thinking the other way, it will most certainly not even try to lift an object averaging 2 SUVs. One ton would be a lot already.
Winch mounting day !!! It should be an international celebration! 🎉😊
I think it is given the viewership at this point! 🎉
Sing ' I must wear safety glasses' to the tune of 'ol MacDonald had a farm, every day!!!
I rarely comment and have been following you since the start but today, with that fourteen metre drop below you and you balancing on those beams, was the first time I got a proper sweat on and felt sick with fear for you. I was so glad to see that tree go. It was bugging the hell out of me in the last video!
I keep thinking „he just posted the video I'm glad he's still alive". some actions honestly terrify me (like the one you described)
I made a comment when he first started about tree and growth damage. Personally I would have made sure roots weren't taking over and causing more damage. Love your comment
@@cindybanks6844 I totally agree. I guess I keep thinking though that I'd do all of one kind of job at once like you would on an ordinary house (all electrics, all plumbing, all stonework etc) - forgetting of course that this isn't an ordinary house! I've decided to just trust in the process as Dan clearly has a really rigid plan which is why he's making such good progress. I've decided he probably had a very good reason for feeling he could leave that one till now. Maybe that type of tree has slow growing shallow roots and he knew it wouldn't cause too much bother so wasn't urgent? We'll probably never know!
@@pipapeach8264 me too! I start getting nervous each day when one is late going up and worry all the next day if he doesn't post. Silly worrying so much about someone you don't know but it's to Dan's credit that we all feel we do and like him.
I wonder what his wife thinks of some of those scary situations. She must cringe worse than we do.
Winch away 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Good call Dan. Well done on removing the tree and heaving those granite stones. I really think you could have build a pyramid because there seems nothing you can’t do. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼✅✅✅✅✅✅
I’m sure you are happier than I am about getting that winch installed and I am pretty darn happy!!! And I called Cam a beast the other week!!! Dude way to use physics & brute strength to move the masonry!!
When I heard San say he was going to mount a wench, I thought I must have the wrong channel.
🤣
You watch your back buddy. Over-straining can pop a disc and it’ll happen with little warning.
Loving your work, I’m so excited to see the start of the roof work! You’re an inspiration. Just, be careful 😂
That boy could build a pyramid stone by stone. Of course, no spine left when elderly , but lots of muscles! 😊❤
Dan you are amazing stay that way & get some safety goggles. No drilling into steel without them. 🙂
Safety is not in Dan's vocabulary... I guess fear is also not a word he is familiar with.
Absolutely...especially when it comes time for a MRI.
hey its youtube! we dont need no stinkin safety glasses xD
@@heavyduty2280 LOL YEP
Seeing you lug those hunks of granite up the stairs reminded me of the foolish things I did in my twenties. Now, 50 odd years later, I'm knackered, and only good for giving advice to others to take more care of themselves, and hope they are willing to listen! You only have one body and one life, man. Please take care of yourself!
Hi Dan, Kelly here in Winnipeg, Canada. Working on a Sunday, what a pleasant supprise, and a enjoyable addition to my day! Your channel is my favorite in a DIY application. Your positivity and obvious Charisma are an excellant addition alongside your skills. Love your dogs, will enjoy the video on the Yurt once your finished with the "Biffy". Cheers Dan, thank you!
KELLY
Take it easy on your back young man, you've got a lot of years left to go. Retiring early because of back problems is no fun.
The winch only seems to be supported by two joists. I hope they're strong enough!
My hands get sweaty when you are up in the turret top with no fall protection.
It might be useful to make a box or platform to go on your winch cable, you could lift a number if items up together with it, save you some time and effort.
On yesterdays Vlog, a tradesman commenter suggested steel cages, of different sizes, used on their worksite in Mexico (7 stories tall) that was very useful to lift materials up to different levels.
Winter is coming, would recommend tarps to cover plywood sheets. Focus on getting roof on as winter weather could undo sheets laid down already. Also good to use safety glasses when grinding. Thanks for awesome work you are doing as I enjoy your videos.
@@melanierallison4694 Yes, Dan did say OSB3 floors were temporary. Dan actually did begin to cover the main hallway floors when builder contractor commenters recommended earlier this year. Good constructive advice to tarp floors even if OSB3 boards are temporary - can also help protect his wood joists investment.
Back injury = no videos = no money coming in = end of a dream. Your body is your greatest asset. Take it seriously and use your brain to figure out how to move the heavy stuff. We all want you to succeed.
Oooh, snazzy new workboots and a strong winch. This project is getting truly serious. Hope the yurt kept the storm outside.
Says Dan "Hey guys - see my lovely 5-ton winch..."
Then proceeds to leave it upstairs while he manhandles some rather hefty pieces of granite!
No battery….
In the weather…
Dan, you are amazing. I don't know how you do it. I absolutely love your channel!
Will suggest that yeah, running the line up to a higher pulley would make it easier to get the load off the line at the top.
Yeah I was wondering about that too
Youve got this Dan , careful moving stones dont want a herniated disc, then work will stop all together, good think Nic coming to help 😊
A snatch block with a rope, straps, and a carabiner, hooked to your tractor would make your back so happy. Looking good!
Sorry Dan, but you did something extremely dangerous, pulling the tree with the nylon belt with the tractor: if by chance the belt broke, it would come at you like a whip and could disfigure you.
Wow that was an ingenious way to mount the winch! Good job!
That root system was in there DEEP! Nature is so powerful. As a child I never understood how ancient ruins could have fallen to ruin but as a home owner it is all TOO CLEAR how quickly it can happen.
I am delighted that you are rescuing this chateau. I think it is worth saving. It is an architectural gem. Your cheerfull attitude and your perserverance are impressive. I enjoy keeping up with your progress. Thank you for allowing me into this passionate journey of yours.
Dan must be so knackered by the end of the day.
Always like to scare us a bit with doing things in high places...lol. watching that torrential rain pour in - I'm hoping you have a plan to get this buttoned up quickly....rainy season is upon us and snow not far behind ... 🥶🤧🙁
Wow Dan! that was mighty hard work just like the Egyptians building the pyramids with those heavy cement blocks. Make sure you eat well and take your vitamins 😅😊🤗
Wow! A huge winch! It’s coming along.
I knew it, the rain sucks ;FF but when I see a new episode pop up im super dupper happy ;D Dan your Energy is unmatched :D
It is always amazing what you do. Is there any material that you can’t work with? The winch looks terrific but is is very satisfying to see those stubborn trees and bushes going away. Two steps forward and one step back but progress is progress. Thanks for sharing!
Dan, love the new heavy duty winch. It will be so helpful . I look forward to you and Nick working your magic together..
Cheers
Dan, when you pull out a brave, stubborn, against-all-odds tree and get most the roots, wouldn’t you pleeeeeease replant it? There’s just something so nostalgic and special about those trees that kept the Chateau company while it was abandoned.
Maybe they won’t make it, but a little stand of them would be such a feature someday. Maybe even pot them near the yurt so you can toss some water or tree fertilizer on them from time to time. One might be a Christmas tree!!
Hi Dan there is no way that that winch can lift 5 ton and the floor cannot support that weight. That winch could pull 5 ton horizontally but not lift it. I would check with the supplier of the winch to verify lifting capacity of both winch and rope so you don't have any accident.
He's never going to be lifting 5 tons of anything in there, so it's not really an issue.
I would recommend taking ride on the winch and lower yourself down. The safety patrol will probably lose their minds but that's ok, it would be fun.
Amazing Dan, how much energy how put in to remove that tree, every time I see your video’s, I still amaze about the energy you put, to rebuilt a whole chateau on his own..respect..
Soooo happy to see that winch! It has been agonizing to see how difficult and slow moving materials. Now for faster and less wear on you Dan. Hang tough its looking good.
You've needed it for ages.
And here I was thinking that the winch would have served you well for those enormous stones as well before it went upstairs.
No battery
Makes me think of an old fashioned one-man band with all the different instruments 😁🎼🎶🎵🥁🎺🎸💟
You need to invest in a stair dolly/hand truck like removalists use to get pianos up stairs. Best and safest way I have worked out to move large bluestones that weigh 30+ kg around my property. Also works well if you cable tie a crate to it for transporting large qty of bricks etc
I am a woman in her mid 50’s with a disability renovating a 1970’s hand built Swedish style timber home.
Dan, you are more like Asterix.. maybe you were inspired by the Egyptian pyramids. Amazing work and progress to get the winch up and running.
That will be a godsend Dan, dont know about others but i shudder every time i see you manhandling kit and materials up that ladder, take care m8
I love and hate watching the videos. It seems he is set on doing things the hardest way possible to cause me more anxiety 😂
Great to see you gack Dan and with that winch..i dont know anything about lifting strengths egc, but i do hope this is going to get you miving so fast...love your vlogs
wonderful news Dan; grateful this is going to help you so much; and I hope the weather is KINDER VERY SOON!🎃🌟
Absolutely stellar effort mate! I felt the pain when you moved the stones yourself, great work, I would’ve given up half way 😆
Yes use goggles, dustmask and eyeprotection!
I once had something hit my eye and I needed cataract surgery a few weeks later.
You are achieving a lot. Great job done
Secret project?? I wonder if it's the well? Can't wait to see!!
@caren197 car park isn't a secret though...whatever it is, it will be exciting with the gang
Finally a bit more safety added❤
Winch and pulley! That s the spirit! Thank you (signed : your back) 😊 great to see the optimisation!
Cracking job Dan 🥰🥰
I’m in a jocker watching you place those floorboards. My legs are freaking out 😂
Rain Rain Go Away so Dan can work another day!!
You work so hard ,I feel for you sometimes - or most times when you are lifting things on your own .But there is a light at the end of the tunnel and I, like you, and all your followers are looking forward to it .Take care .
The tree removal was a highlight for me. I have been wishing ALL the trees/shrubs growing on the chateau were gone on DAY 1!! Celebration here in Oregon USA. Thanks Dan. Gee I wish he had more help. Reminds me of Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, he was the guy who worked on The Crazy Horse Monument in Crazy Horse South Dakota by himself for over 35 years until he died in 1982, at age 74.
Great job completing the wall!
Have you considered using Nick's tree ropes to make a zip line to raise the c-chanel. I'm not sure he has enough length, but between that and your new winch it may be a safer option
That's very good advice

Good Monday Morning Dan! Congratulations on the winch! So exciting to be that much closer to the roof!
Delighted by the surprise Sunday vlog. Now happily thinking of all that you and Nick may have accomplished already this morning. Hope the weather is cooperating and everything runs like clock work.

Sending all my prayers and good vibes your way. Please do be extra careful up there. Loads of ❤ from Tennessee
Do you plan to board up all windows and doors to limit the incoming of dirt and debris during winter?
I was pondering if it'll be windows.
Just need to do something similar to what is being done in Ukraine. Safety glasses is a must.❤
Yeah I’ve been thinking something similar but I suspect he’s doing the walls etc to try get a roof solution done before winter sets in so he can still work through winter ❄️
Below 6 degrees your fingers will hurt exposed to the wind all the time.
@@4711Express Dan’s lived there 5 or so years so probably is well aware.
Your practical engineering skills are amazing Dan! The way you moved those granite stones, walking them, literally! Smart!
What a treat! A Sunday video 😊. I don’t know how you are able to move those heavy stones
The winch is here ... hoorah!❤🎉😊
