Here is how in my opinion best use the shell AC: Be a blade singer, Usually wizard AC is kinda meh, only really compensated by mage armor and shield, however those are resource intensive.
A level 5 tortle bladesinger wizard with a +4 int can easily run into melee, assuming they can first apply bladesong, since they get 17+4 AC so 21, however they still get access to shield and silvery barbs, one to raise effective AC to 26 if needed, or ignore crits in case of getting unlucky.
You are still a wizard though, and while absorb elements and counterspell reasonably improve survivability, having half the HP of the other frontliner is quite the danger.

If you believe in yourself and with a tiny pinch of magic, all your dreams can come true

Tortle Soulknife rogue is an amazing no-gear build. No need for armor when you have a shell, and no need for weapons when you have psi blades. It’s also one of the few builds where a rogue can dump dex

@@smilesschemes Yeah, strength rogues with athletics expertise are really fun. I’m playing one in an upcoming one shot that uses tavern brawler. The cool thing about psi blades is they manifest when you take the attack action. That translates to being able to make unarmed strikes without unequipping. You just choose to not manifest them the turn you want to grapple. Then you can claw smack into a bonus action grapple.

I'm using this for an absolutely stupid build - It's a tortle ancesteral guardian barb/open hand monk. Tortle gives me 17 ac, better than I'll ever get, and the 1d6 unarmed, which is great on monk. I also took the mobile feat. The entire build idea is to run in, punch someone, ba flurry, knock them prone, run away without oa cuz mobile. Your unarmed strikes can use str, meaning that rage can be added, which is hilarious. You've now hit them, and cuz ancestor, they basically cannot attack anyone other than you. You're running around the battlefield, knocking people prone, moving faster than they can so they can never catch up to you, and you're raging the entire time while swinging a longsword around. It's hilarious.
