- Native to the Snout of Omgar, an island on the southern tip of Chult, the Tortles are a peaceful, self reliant race of Tortoise people, in this video, I talk about them, their close relatives the marine Snappers and the supplimental document for Tomb of Annihilation that they feature prominantly inside.
I'm really getting into the D&D lore. It's constantly surprising me with just how deep, exotic, creative and varied it can get. TES hasn't introduced any new playable races to its series, but D&D has an incredible range!
Having been bitten by a 55lb alligator snapping turtle ( that's still a baby for that specie) I can tell you the bite attack should do way more than 1d6 damage.
DnD is dumb when it comes to damage and weapon stats and weight. Swords are WAY too heavy for example
Are there different types of turtles?
Spectacular! Rather powerful race and it makes a great deal of sense. I wasn't expecting the shorter lifespan however. Its awfully sad about the Galapagos tortoise but I here they're on the up and up. Sad that the true parents dont get to watch there offspring grow up but i suppose the hatching must bring them a great deal of joy. Thanks Gregory, I am on the mend. yeah a lot of folks have focused on how sad the end of their life is, but, from the Tortles perspective, it would be a deeply emotional and satisfying culmination of their life.. these are creatures with a love of poetry and the natural world, for them, it is the embodiment of the cycle of life.

@@AJPickett 15th level Monk doesn't need food or water, so teorethically male could survive his watch over eggs. It would be interesting for high level one shot to play Tortle, that lived through mating and don't know what to do with his life, as he closed his affairs before.

My new character might be an old turtle who is on his last journey before going home to mate. He'll constantly tall about it and how exited he is, It will be a tragedy when we get cleared.

The one time a beast folk is of one of the rare animals that outlive humans who have access to modern medicine, even those found in the wild.
Dnd makes the beast folk of that creature, the giant tortiose, 1 of less than 10 races with a SHORTER life span than humans
Most live 20 to 50 years only a fue of the largest tortoise live to 100 to 150 years.

Tortles were originally payable in the Mystara spin off setting, Red Steel.
I miss Red Steel, with the Lupines I think is what their called, lol, and some of the armor. I think there was something close to subdermial armor. lol,
The first thing I did was check the release date to see if this video went up on April 1st, this is the first time I ever heard of these things
Honestly, tortoises have always been a symbol for me. Not really gonna go "spirit animal," levels, but I've always loved the real world symbology they hold, turtles, tortoises, and sea turtles alike. (Though tortoises are the big one for me.) Was happy to hear about these guys being put into 5e, and was OVERJOYED to hear they were a quality addition. Definitely gonna be an inclusion in my next campaign.
The Turtle is a primal part of many ancient creation stories.

Ever since I saw this creature in 2nd ed. Monster Manual I've wanted to do an adventure on one of these, but the players would always be too chicken to get on a ship...

Well, the Tortle Package is a legit 5E product, it's just a digital one, not in print.
Hmm the males wouldn't have to die if they prepared the food beforehand for this time, that would add a benefit of not being malnourished while guarding the eggs, if sleep is a concern, then two males could make an agreement that one will guard both eggs while the other naps and then they switch. Or they just don't care couse they're old and wanna die already :)
Yeah, I think it is instinctual and they must go into a kind of super paternal mental state, out of their control.

Now to take four of these & have them train as Ninja using the Oriental Adventures rules. Perhaps have a Nezumi train them.

wish their shell would be a bit like a cantrip in that it would get better at higher levels, say start at 16 AC at level 1, 17 at 5th, 18 at 11th and 19 at 17th. :)

Red Steel is just the Savage Coast of Mystara (or, a boxed set that provides rules and a basic overview of that region, under the red curse). There seems to be a lot of Mystara material being updated to 5th edition, so, let's see what 2018 holds in store :)

So does the Tortal shell bonus stack with wisdom mods for monks? Or is it more a dex and shell based AC. I was interested in building a monk tortal but I’m not sure what stacks and what doesn’t.
Ninja turtle eh? Sadly you can apply only one AC calculation at a time. Natural Armour and unarmored defense are two different AC calculations so, you must choose one.

I LOATHE TORTLES.
I know that there are a great deal of other aspects of other D&D species that are just flavor text and not always overly creative storytelling, but I only can look at this species as just being stupid. And I don't mean that they are creatively dumb for just being turtle people, but as a species they are just stupid. In a cooperative group the males are too ignorant to get someone to bring them a damn sandwich when they are waiting for their children to hatch? And they live in a magical world, you would think they would develop either the skill or relationship with another species to use magic to help the females through the birthing process... And I might be over anthropomorphic these things with humans but you'd also think they would figure out some form of contraceptives to just avoid getting pregnant and the whole absurd death thing they haven't figured out around it.
Maybe they don't want to. They seem to like the way that their reproductive cycle works and it works for them.
Also, it appears that their much of their society is built around the way that they reproduce.
