  • My wife came through for us on the farm, she called every produce vendor, local restaurant, produce stand, you name it trying to find some contacts to help us move some of our produce. We got a call from a produce vendor that was interested in our local grown vegetables. So far we have moved cabbage, broccoli, squash, zucchini and a few patty pan varieties. He's excited about the new venture and I'm happy I'm married to a woman that has always had my back no matter what, and she's my biggest fan and supporter.
Also, Jace and I head out in the garden to harvest our elephant garlic. We planted 51 cloves last November, and today we harvest well over 45 bulbs. Some are single bulbs and will be used either for cooking, or for next years root stock, but some of the larger bulbs did split and have 4-6 cloves each. We were also pleasantly surprised to see the amount of corms that were on the bulbs. These will be used to generate more root stock for next years crop.

The best garlic I ever grew was growing where there was a prior mole infestation, the soil was different in this area, you could water it and it wouldn’t ever get compacted, you could stuff your hand down into the soil past your wrist, I’ve allowed moles to live in my garden ever since, they till the soil all year long and eat the slugs, but the garlic makes them leave, which is good because they disturb roots, and as long as they’re not too many, I don’t mind a small bit of damage to the other crops, but the garlic grows great for me after a mole infestation as well as kicking them out for a while.

Hello, very interesting video! Do you sell this elephant garlic? Is it more profitable than your other crops you’ve been selling?

Do you water garlic in the fall when planted?

In moderation, it doesn't take much when its cold, but once it starts to warm up you will need to water regularly

I use weed fabric during the warm season planting, but don't during the fall/Winter. I will be trying more Occultation next year.

Elephant garlic is not garlic. It is more closely related to a Leek. Some people prefer their taste over the hard neck garlic that is grown around here.
