  • In this video, we are harvesting our Garlic and Elephant Garlic and also sharing what we do after harvest to dry and store our Garlic to Make it last a whole year. I'm still using Elephant Garlic from last years harvest which is now over a year old, so hopefully the methods we use can help you be self sufficient in garlic for the whole year too.

    Iowa Zone 5a. We had similar results with similar soil (loose with lots of organic matter). Mostly Korean Red with Russian Red, German Porcelain, and some Music. Planted mid November, harvested late June. This year I fertilized 2X (fish fert + an organic fert), but with unexpected rain (i.e., 'normal' rain vs global warming drought) we ended up with more soil on our bulbs than last year. With rain forecast the evening of the harvest, no time to clean up the bulbs. Loose dirt off, and 12 plants per bundle, 6 bundles per string, estimated 332 bulbs total. Estimate 133 ft sq garden @ 0.33 sq ft per clove. Total harvest (with culls & small bulbs) about 400.
    Adjustable Grip Hitch Knot tying the bundles together, and a simple Clove Hitch Knot on an 8 foot cord to hang the bundles to dry. (Easy knot to untie, making it possible to use the same cord next year.) Anyway, I'm concerned that hanging dirty bulbs might affect long term storage, but they seem to be drying okay in our garage.
    How often do you water? Do you fertilize, & if so, how often?
    Thanks for sharing. Second year planting garlic. Bigger blubs & cloves than what we started with, but if I brag on it, I'm afraid that the Garden Gods will punish my hubris by blighting next year's crop. We have to remember that we are nothing more than caretakers for Mother Nature. All the best...

      Great to hear you are joining us from Iowa 💚 and enjoying growing lots of beautiful garlic 🧄 It is a very rewarding (and useful) crop to grow indeed and there is nothing wrong with being proud of your achievements with good sized bulbs 🙌 Its all swings and round abouts, my elephant garlic crops was better quality and size this year than last, my French garlic is way smaller than normal though, prob due to earlier than normal rust onset where it was a very wet winter year past! (Elephant seems more resistant here).
      Once planted out, unless we had an incredible dry spell, we never water our garlic! We save our limited water supply for the crops than need it most and also feel, where it grows from a clove more self sufficient and to wet and you can rot it. We do add a woodchip mulch after sowing though which acts as a sponge all winter and slow release in the summer, really helps to lock moisuture in the soil below too. It also breaks down over time and feeds the soil and micro organisms, so we do not fertilise either, just a couple cm's of fresh compost on top of the bed or handful into the planting hole at time of sowing. Take care of your land and she we take care of you ...and help us in our learning 💚✌️🌿

      @@freedomforestlife Thanks for the reply. I used a straw mulch this year, and like your wood chips, it did a good job keeping the ground moist, but I watered on occasion when I thought the ground was too dry. Then the rains came, and the ground was a bit too wet, but no garlic rot, so all was well. I have another question for you. My wife wants to only plant cloves from bulbs with 6 cloves, since that's the ideal count for the Korean Red that we grow. Does it really matter? We have some large bulbs with fat cloves @ 7 or 8 per bulb. I would like to use them for planting. BTW, 'large' for this variety is a bulb 2 to 2 1/2 inches in diameter. At least that's what we've got. I'm happy with it...

      Yeah great advice - I did a trial on this one year, as I read if you planted the rounds youd get a MASSIVE bulb the following year - how have you found them size wise? ... They did form up good for me, but they weren't as big as I hoped 😆 you can see it in this video here if you'd like 👉 ruclips.net/video/q2rPPRtJ2Vw/видео.html

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  2 года назад +1

      HI Gawain ... yep ... we LOVE our garlic !!! .... My favourite variety is defo the Elephant Garlic (although its actually more of a leek I believe) its just the best. But I do love growing a strong french or european variety always too. I got my original seed garlic for both from the Isle of wight garlic farm, they do some cool varieties depending on your taste ,... I also favour growing hard neck varieties ... they are hardier and you get a double harvest by way of their scapes, before the bulbs are ready ✌️🌿

      @@freedomforestlife yup, totally with you on this, I’m excited to grow hard neck, although I will grow some soft neck too because I hear it stores better?
      I was wondering if you had any thoughts on particular varieties that are good for our climate?
      This year I planted garlic in spring and it hasn’t gone so well so am going to go for November!

      Hi Norman, the flower scapes that grow out of the top of hard neck are delicious... I've never tried using the actually neck though, like a leek, if thats what you mean ... I always save mine as I plait them up together after drying. Nice to hear from you - thanks for watching ✌️🌿
