    Great video, I really like your gentle and introspective delivery. I love my M8 as much as my M2, an excellent combination to carry in a Billingham. I have looked longingly at the M9, the only other M I could dream of affording, a choice made easier by my affection for the CCD filter. However my loyalty to the M8 could lead me to shoot it until it fails and then replace it with another M8. It is strange the pull of a camera with real limitations, maybe I like things to be a challenge. All the best on your Leica journey which I promise to follow, Charles.

      Yes, the M8 has this charm, Leica nails it with the first shot. I was thinking to get other M8 but in the end, I decided to go for M9 to give my lenses another field of view. Enjoy your cameras and thanks for the support!

      Charles,I like the idea that it's not always got to be a best gear. Rather something you enjoy using and that fits for your needs. To be honest I didn't have a chance to compare my m8 to other digital Ms, but if they are made equally great then sometime I might get myself some FF Leica, but now I enjoy every "date" (as I call going out shooting) with my trusty M8.

      For me the M8 was an easy transition from using film Leicas, indeed I use screw lenses on my M8. Many think of a Leica as a rich person,s toy yet I hear real love for the more affordable M8 and M9. Perhaps we value them partly because we struggle to afford them, perhaps saving a long time before getting one. Hugo expresses this love well, I wish he would post more, good luck with your date, all the best, Charles.

      @@davidescott-new1194 your point on their market price is very solid. Yes, it's overprice is the first argument in every Leica bashing. Thank God there are more then adequately priced M2 and M3 that I'd pick any day! To me they are just great designed devices that even age beautifully. I'm positive no M camera is outdated in 2019. Maybe except M5 and CL partly because of their odd metering. Best, Alex

    Another great video Hugo, I also took the plunge and bought a M9 to go with my M8 and like you I still love using the M8 as a daily camera. As you said in the video there’s something about the colours you get from the M8 that’s missing from the M9 ( it’s hard to describe but there is a subtle difference ). It’s nice to have full frame with the M9 though to get the full benefit of the lenses especially wide angle like a 28mm my favourite focal length for street photography. Looking forward to your next video.

      Thanks, Geoff, ...I didn't try jet the 28mm in the M9, is like glued to the M8. I found the 50mm and 90mm to shine more in the M9 than in the M8, the 35 goes well in bought, as 35 o 46mm, and the light 28 Elmarit in the M8 as a 35mm makes a very good combo. After reading your comment I'm curious to try it in the M8

    Nice video Hugo! I've seen a few people that really love their M8 having a bit of a cold initial reaction to the M9, and I did find that surprising because I thought they were basically the same camera with a differently sized sensor.
    Now that you mentioned more vivid colors on the M9, I think I love the M8 even more, it's really unique and I totally agree with you on the "mechanical" feel this camera has (I even formatted my SD card to show only 36 pictures on the frame counter ; ).

  • @Yulfi
    @Yulfi 5 лет назад +2

    The freezing that you experienced may have just been the camera buffering, which would explain why some images were lost when the battery was removed. This usually happens when shooting a digital camera in a burst or continuous shooting style.

    • @myleicam8546
      @myleicam8546  5 лет назад

      In this particular case the camera really frozes, I mean, letting the camera in the bag and after five minutes continue to block and blinking. Normal buffering takes time, but sooner o later the camera works again. Thanks for your comment!

    Personally, I feel the M9 can be the most popular used Leica CAM if not for its corroded CCD issue. I agree that the CCD sensor does produce a very film like image compared to CMOS. I love the JPEG output on my D1H and M8. I bought a M9M because I love the JPEG output on the M8. When I saw the DNG + JPEG files on my M9M, I am totally sold. The M9M will be staying with me and I am even willing to pay for the cost of a replacement sensor, if the sensor corrode in future.

      Hi Gerardo, fellow swiss here. Trying to decide to get either an M8 or an M8.2.
      I shoot Fuji (X100T & X-Pro1) for the last 5 years. Got into Film recently with a Nikon FE. Very much enjoy it (did Photography in my late teens and early twenties, darkroom etc) so it was nice going back to ‚basics‘..but it is a lot of hassle and quite expensive also....so I don‘t shot much Film.
      The idea with a Leica came recently, well everybody liked to own a Leica someday. I like classic cameras with less functions and an ‚analog‘ feeling to it. So that is why I got the X-Pro1 last year. Enjoy it very much. Shoot Optical viewfinder a lot, in manual also. Just like the ‚retro‘ feeling.
      Less is more, more often then not. So I was thinking of treating myself to a Leica (big decision as the costs are hight, especially with three small kids...) might need to sell stuff 🥴.
      So Obv I am looking for a ‚cheap‘ way to try it out. Digital might be more conveniant, so the M8 is the obvious choice. Now 2 popped up just near me M8 in very good condition 3k shutter count for chf 1‘1k and another for 1’5k with waranty and only 1k shutter count, plus an M8.2 absolutely new for chf 1‘7k...uhhhh
      I havent done much research, so I don‘t rush. Trying to figure out what prices are ok what to look out for......stuff like that. You know it. Maybe you gave some input for me.
      Much appreciated!
      Cheers from around Zürich

      Hola Jose, la razón de comprarme la M9 ha sido lo mucho que me gusta la M8 y por tener una segunda cámara. Una compra por una parte innecesaria, ya que la M8 es más que suficiente, pero de la que no me arrepiento porque es una buena cámara y con algunas lentes creo que aporta un pequeño "extra" Por contra es mas torpe, menos mecánica, al menos la mia.
      Si no te importa el sensor algo mas pequeño y el efecto que esto produce en el campo de vision de la lente comparado con tu M7, probaría una M8 por precio y caracter, si tú presupuesto es mayor entonces la M9 es una opcion buena por ser mas moderna, mira que tenga el sensor cambiado, porque tenian problemas de corrosión.

    Hello Hugo, thank you for this comparative review of both the M8 & M9 camera's, regarding your freeze issues of the M9 I would suggest finding 16gb Sandisk Pro cards rated at 46 mbit as this gives the least freezing issues to my experience ( i had no freezing issues so far). Please check that you have the latest firmware installed on your camera. The M9 is very picky on what memory card you use. I speak from experience as I am using the M8, M9 & M10. I did not have any freezing issues using these cards on the M9. I like the M8 the most for street, because of the crop factor gives me some extra depth of field in street photography when zone focussing. A3+ prints with the M8 @160 ISO are great and arguably not visually better than with higher Mp camera's, I suppose due to the quality of the Leica glass. The M10 is much better at high ISO as I can get adequate results at ISO 6400 compared to ISO800-1250 on the M9. The b/w jpg in the M8 and M9 are one of the best you can find out of the camera. You can tweak the raw DNG files in ACR but I found it is fairly difficult to obtain a similar look in ACR/LR. I started (in digital) with the M240, bought a M9 (with new sensor) and got a very nice opportunity to purchase a M8 (with newer shutter), sold the M240 to fund the M10. I have the M10 with the M9 as backup, the M8 I use mostly for personal projects. When purchasing a M8 it is becoming fairly difficult to find Leica UV/IR cut filters as they apparently stopped production please take this into account when purchasing a M8. Leica can not fix the screen of the M8 due to lack of parts. They still service the camera for other malfunctions.

      B&W jpeg in M8 and M9 are beautiful, I always shoot in DNg+B&W jpeg, and very often stay with the jpeg, sometimes adding some light, whites, and that's all they need.

I know, it is a personal matter, but do not hesitate to give me a hint ! Greetings, Stay in Good Health, Roger :-)

      Hi Roger, Im glad my videos are useful to you. Let me try to give you a hint ;-) First, M8 and M9 are very similar. If money is not a problem, M9 is a more modern camera, full frame, with excellent and powerful B&W JPEG. Is the only camera you may need. But be sure the sensor is free of corrosion. Leica changed the M9 sensors for free, bun now you need to pay, and is not cheap.
      The M8 is older, more mechanical feel, with more character and a unique color DNG´s, warm and beautiful. And old look low contrast B&W jpg´s. No problems with sensor in M8´s, but the shutter can be a weak point.
      My approach was like this: start with M8, fell in love, purchase a M9 thinking is gonna be much better and find out is not.
      Conclusion: With the two cameras you feel exactly the same pleasure. And the shooting experience is almost identical.
      I use IR/UV filter in the m8, but sometimes I like to try without. Is nor indispensable and in nature, with not black colors, the filter is unnecessary.
      All the best! Hugo

    Hello, great video. I have never had a Leica before. I am just starting in photography, and am thinking of getting the M8. Like you said, it's cheaper than the M9. Would the M8 be good for a beginner, or should I go with something else. These Leica cameras look well built. The shutter sounds great too, it reminds me of when I close the door on my old Buick, very solid. Cheers, Rob.

      Thanks Rob! The M8 is a perfect first step into Leica m digital cameras. Is the cheapset of all, and no other can match the colors and B&W it produces. In some way, the newer ones are more capable, but not more pleasant and rewarding to use. They are solid like bricks, but they can also fail, and die, as everyone ;-)

    Hello Hugo! Before buying the m9, were you not worried that it was very risky? This camera is very tempting but it had so many problems with the sensor... - corrosion, - "purple curtain" - thin glass on the sensor, easy to break. I have the impression that the m9 is the most vulnerable copy of the M. This stops you from buying. PS: have you ever tried type 262?

    • @myleicam8546
      @myleicam8546  2 года назад

      Hi Maciej, yes, there is always a risk involve in the purchase of a old camera like this one. My experience was good, but is true that the camera feels a beat more delicate that for example, the M8. Look for one with the sensor replaced by Leica, this is important. Mine has no issues with it (the sensor was replaced before I bought it) Unfortunately I never tried the 262,but it seams a excellent option. All the best!

    Hello Hugo. A quick question. In your opinion, would a Leica M8 be a good starting point, or would you go for the M8.2, or M9? I'm not sure what the difference would be. Cheers, Rob.

    • @myleicam8546
      @myleicam8546  4 года назад

      zambam3 Hello. The m8 shutter speed goes until 1/8000 of a second an the m8.2 until 1/4000. I think that’s the only difference between them. The black version m8 has a mat finish (I like it much more) and the m8.2 has a glossy black paint.
      M9 is full frame, 35mm sensor, m8’s are smaller, but they produce exceptional colours. I recommend you try first a M8 M8.2, they are cheaper and excellent at the same time.

      Thanks for your comment Michael. I perfectly understand you, the more simple a camera is , the better. And nothing beats a M8 in simplicity. I own 2 Leica’s M8, they are the 1st version, not the 8.2. The difference is in the shutter speed, 1/8000 in the M8 and 1/4000 in the M8.2. Probably for longevity reasons, because the shutter is the weakest point of the camera. If you like it, trust me, you don’t need nothing more 😉

    Thanks for the video Hugo, I like the old Leica film cameras, my father used to own one back in the day. It seems to me that today Leica M cameras are more about handling the camera and less about photography, I've seen it in many Leica YT videos, some photographers are even in love with their M camera. The CCD colors can be mimicked in post, it is not magic. The reason why I won't buy a Leica is because most M cameras have major issues, the M9 has the corrosive sensor which costs over $1000 to repair, and a used one with the repaired sensor is too expensive for what the camera outputs. The M8 suffers from banding, hot pixels, and the IR issue. Putting a IR filter in front of a Leica lens is ridiculous. The M10/M11 are definitely not worth the going price. It is unreal to me that a "luxury" camera manufacturer has below average quality control and then charges exorbitant prices for a hand assembled camera. That is very common with German technologies, the Leica, The classic Porsche 911, and other products, they all littered with major issues. Photography is about you and the subject, the camera is just a tool, like a paintbrush and canvas. If you can't create a beautiful photos with a point and shoot camera your Leica won't help you and you will end up taking photos of your kitchen sink, a few trees, and a sunset photos. The only reason to buy a Leica is the way the camera looks and how it makes you feel when taking a photo.

    • @myleicam8546
      @myleicam8546  2 года назад +1

      Hi Karim, I understand your point, and in some ways I think the same. For me the M8 was a discovery, a camera that bring mer back the pleasure of photography. No complications, good feelings, good images, and a reasonable price on that time. I bought it second hand when M8´s were the ugly duck from Leica m´s. M8 is all the camera I need, capable enough, brings me the pleasure of old school photography without the extra work that film requires. But if you are not sure, is better go for other options, there are many, and avoid the expensive problems a Leica can suffer. In mi case it was a great decision, but is a very personal choice.

      I had my M8 for about a year and loved the body but hated everything inside, its cropped sensor, filters, non realistic colours, bad auto white balance , bad metering, slowness, non existent iso above 800, most of these things are fixed or perfected in m9, I really dont understand why people forgive all that to this camera
