      @@duewhat9815 By lazy I'm not referring to multi account, what I meant is they just afk on some skill or activity. Random event messes up by forcing people to actually pay attention instead of doing something else.

  • @spiritofnex

    Technically account sharing is against the rules, but Jagex has said multiple times that it's not enforced. It's only there to protect them if you lose all your stuff because you let someone else use your account, as they can go "It's against the rules, so we're not giving your stuff back". The anti afk rule did scare me as a child though, and I was very diligent to log out whenever I got up to do something, even if it was only for a couple seconds.

      @@AnhNguyen-hn9vj 99% of minecraft servers have anti-Afk rules where you will be banned for making an AFK machine to avoid their timers. Why do they do it? You saying you've never played a game with banned afk is irrelevant.

  • @ttuurrttlle
    @ttuurrttlle Год назад +17

    The "no afk-ing" rule was 100% Andrew Gower. Back then, he really was into the idea of "the game must be played how I think it should be played".
    That's all well and good for some things, but if you design your game in a way that basically BEGS them to afk while chopping a tree or fishing, and then you ban them for playing that way then that's awful.

    • @whompronnie
      @whompronnie 8 месяцев назад

      It is absolutely insane. They could have literally just made you click something every 30 seconds instead of scaring kids with some ridiculous rule. I've been binging these videos, and so much of early Jagex sounds like they had absolutely no idea what they're doing. Take deleting inactive characters. Even in the early 2000s, there's no way a little array of data was taking up enough space to justify scorning your fan base. One of the lame images in their special folder probably took up a thousand player characters worth of data.

    • @SioxerNikita
      @SioxerNikita Месяц назад

      @@whompronnie Let's see. A character could likely be around 100-200kb, maybe less, let's just say 50 kb... There is a lot of data to save overall for the charater, and a saved password takes up quite a few bytes, since it was likely hashed. We could even go down to let's say... 10 kb, 10 000 bytes... and it would still scale...
      Now that is not really a ton... but, now you have 1000 of them at 10kb. Now it is 10 megabytes...
      The price per GB in 1998, was 56.30$ (on average), and this is not necessarily a one time cost for servers. Each Harddrive you attach also increases your power cost, it complicates your server code further, and it adds more points of failure (You need backups, so it becomes more expensive), and you will need more personnel over time to maintain more the more HDDs you have.
      Costs add up suddenly... Year by year costs essentially halfed per GB after this, but that would also then be replacing the HDDs, which would not really be cost efficient, which essentially means with a trending down price (halved per year), when does it become viable to start replacing the hardware? It also costs time and effort to replace the hardware, which is significantly more expensive.
      And the whole point of the larger your database is, the longer it takes to search through it, which costs processing power, etc... so purging inactive characters makes your server run smoother.
      There is a lot more to it than "Oh, but it doesn't take much space"... Deleting inactive characters is actually something that was INCREDIBLY common back then, even for paid MMOs.
      It is easy to look at PCs today and conclude something, but I could likely run the entirety of early 2000s Runescape servers on a decent tablet today... Stuff has become significantly more powerful.

    "Couldn't have two accounts on at once"
    Yeah and thats why drop trading was a very risky, but doable thing. You'd typically find a low pop world or a area with no real foot traffic and then move your accounts into position. once done the one with the item drops their stuff and logs, then you'd log into the "bank" account and wait till the items appeared for you.
    Granted some people and myself would sometimes follow people who would randomly walk off to remote areas or to 2nd floor of houses typically no one would really have a reason to, in hopes of intercepting drops. This is how I lost my first red cape.

    My guess is the anti-AFK rule was more of a guideline for player safety than something they were actively banning players over. Back in the day, while you could in theory AFK splash or such for 6 hours, I doubt anyone managed since Random Events were not optional and would surely interrupt you, if not kill you. So they probably encouraged players to log out when leaving the computer to avoid/reduce the number of players who died AFK. Think the Stronghold of Security even has/had some dialog saying as much too.

I was young and didn't know much about how the Java client worked, but my dad worked in IT (98 and NT networking for businesses) and it was much easier to build 4 computers per screen with a KVM switch to play 8 accounts each. The lag on DSL back then was extreme but we were fishing lobbies F2P to pay for D Chain and infinity robes on our mains.

    The FAQ of the macroing rule indeed simply says 'don't AFK' but if you read the first paragraph of this rule it said something along the lines of that you're not allowed to circumvent the mechanics that are used to auto log off inactive users. So that implies you're only breaking the rule if you leave the computer while having made sure your character can't log auto log off after 5 minutes of inactivity. So that would have been splashing or what some people did in the past in the desert Bandit Camp where they could also leave for hours while their character stayed online in combat.

    The 6 hour timer didn't used to be a thing from what I remember and from what I've heard. I'm sure you remember Cursed You, the first person to get 99 construction. He wrote about how he became one of the richest players in the game. What he did was he spam clicked the charge spell (back when there wasn't a cool down period after casting it) to go from 80 magic to 99 in a few hours. He then purposely did not log out so that his hiscores data was not refreshed. This allowed him to appear on the hiscores as having 80 mage, while actually having 99 mage. He then began mage box staking people, where he had a massive advantage against people and won hundreds of millions. He says he kept his account logged in for around a week without logging off so that he could keep doing this.
    I did something similar to this back in 2014 on old-school, albeit with the 6 hour timer in place. I leveled up my range by about 5 levels in 3 hours, then staked people for the next 3 hours until I hit the 6 hour log out timer. I turned 1m into 20m in those 3 hours.

      I only ever did whip/DDSd or naked melee boxxing because to me it was so obvious people were getting finessed like that. I remember cleaning out so many sweaty stakers with "minmaxxed" stats getting so mad losing to my weird ass 81att-86-str-83 def or some shit. At least with melee you could just gauge based on combat levels. I even remember encountering a few with slightly worse accounts with the same name but 1 letter slightly off like a zero instead of an O hoping you would accidentally look that one up in Swiftkit or scythe or w/e but you could always tell because even the clients back then could calculate combat level.

    When the AFK training rule made sense is was in Classic you had to perform a separate click for every action in things like mining and fishing. There was no 'click once and watch your character continue to perform the action', you had to spam click the rock or fishing spot back then. Saying no AFK training was another way to say no using of auto-clickers or other things to perform for you while you weren't at the keyboard.

  • @JDS_im
    @JDS_im 19 дней назад

    I'm sure those rules like AFK training not being allowed were there to promote account security rather than actually being enforced as rulebreaks. It's no longer considered a rulebreak, but the question has been put into the security stronghold instead. And back in 2004-2006, the average player was like 13-14 years old. Nobody really cared about best practices to keep your account from being compromised, but when it's listed as a bannable offense, at least most people will try to do their best to not risk it.

    if I remember correctly it was not restricted to one account per ip address in RSC, rather per client executable or mac address (which I doubt). It was very common to have 10 people in a computer class at school logged in at the same time in 2002/2003. also trading between your own accounts was done by going somewhere out of sight and dropping the stuff on to the ground and logging out and in. good times...

    I remember reporting people writing foreign language thinking it was breaking the rule. I was 11 years old, and barely spoke English. I also didn't know how to change attack style, so I was an attack pure for like 2 months. My main source of cash was killing Dark Wizards for their runes and selling it to the general store saving up for the Adamant 2H at Taverly. Saved up further and got full mithrile, one slot was adamant, maybe the legs. Anyway, a guy told me he would make me member so I typed my password with a "7" between each letter.
    Well, my trust in people stopped there. Of course I was robbed of everything I had. Told my friend I had lost it all, so he told me that his friend also played and they shared their accounts.. So we hacked him, I got gold bars and some wood. Sold it all for 30k (I swear I had items worth of 100k + + but I didn't know it's value). The girl we stole all the items from cried her eyes out "All the chickens we killed together and sold all the feathers from". Lol fucking golden times!
    Sorry for the block of text, all the memories just came flooding back when I started!

    i remember jmod comment on afk training back then. its not splashing, splashing is a mordern thing. back then runescape players are mainly school kids/dorm students and siblings, if one friend plays runescape it is possible everyone in a friend group plays runescape. so playing in group or sharing one computer is common. so jagex didnt want someone to take or drop your item in a grudge or as prank, and there was so many reports back then as someone they know dropped or stole their item, so they had no afk rule.

I bought tons of runs and armor to set up splashing and went to bed and woke up the next day to a 3 day ban. I think it was around 2015 or 2016
