Thanks Lady Hawk for this update,I'm so glad there's 20 chicks around!!😅 God speed to those who had fly high and mighty!!🎉 Good job to all people out there who had made it happened🎉 Blessings to everyone🤗😇
I so enjoyed this Albatross season you showed, I will miss them all. I sailed to S Africa as a child in the 60s and they followed the ship, that was my very first encounters with Albatross.
Truly sad for these parents' return without knowing kiddos had departed!😢 LGK does missed his precious hungry boy who is good in wheeing and he always obliged!!😢 Mission accomplished LGK,you had done well so is your mate!💞 Stay safe and strong, TF is so lucky to have great parents!!🩷 Be blessed Lady Hawk, much appreciated💕Thank-you 🎉
Hello Kylie thank you and well said ♥ LGK has done a great job once again this season! TF was very lucky to have such great parents and so was TFT!! I don't think LGK got to really sit and contemplate TF not being here since he did get interrupted - for better or worse!! Take care and have a great day!
Another heartbreak 💔 This time LGK finds the nest empty 😢 He looks tired 😴 This yellow banded chick behaves very polite while begging for food and LGK is also very gentle to it 🤍🦢 TF is gone and we will not see him for years 😮 And this is the hard part for me. Albatrosses live for long but because of it getting to maturity takes them almost decade 😅 That is long from a human perspective 😮 Where will I be within ten years 🤔 Wil I be still alive 😂💓🤗🍀 This is different dimension for me to comprehend 😊 ♾️ Thank you so much dear Lady Hawk for another update from Taiaroa Head. You did great again 👍🤗⛵🌊🤍💐💞🐝🍫 💖
Thanks to the rangers for helping ensure the young albatross reach fledge stage with all their feedings and weighings. They are beautiful birds and this is my first season watching them.
Aawww… sweet Papa having a rest and nap 🥱… I didn’t realize their eyes close from the bottom to top… wow 😲 P.S. he seems much calmer than Mama Albie was…
LGK is a sweetie and was friendly to the visiting female chick. He didn't appear to be stressed by the fledging of his feisty chick TF-- he seemed accepting of it. Of course this is my human interpretation of the behavior of a sea bird that I'd never even seen until about 8 months ago. I've love learning about these beautiful majestic birds and many thanks for the education and excellent cam work by the Royal Albatross folks, especially the rangers, Cornell University and in particular, Lady Hawk for her video captures and captions. See you next season!
Hello 6falconsue thank you for watching the albatross this season! They are fascinating birds and and we have learned so much by these cams and the GPS trackers on the chicks! And thank you for your insightful comments throughout the year!! I loved seeing LGK and this female chick - he was quite the gentlemen Uncle albie to her!! 😉🥰 Next season is starting soon! we will get to see returnees coming in to Top Flat now through November! We might get to see a pair mating or see new young love and courtship begin! In early November, once the DOC decides WHO will be the Royalcam couple for the next year - they will move the cam to their nest location once the pair is actively incubating their egg! So no real break from saying Goodbye to the chicks to saying hello to the new returnees! ♥
... their schedule is pure delight for us human aunties & uncles ❤❤❤ Speaking of uncles, isn't TFL a kind uncle to the hungry begging youngster who hasn't fledged yet? 😊
🥰💕🌿🦢💕 It was so wonderful to meet this sweet Princess Albie!! 🥰🥰 She's so gorgeous, graceful and adorable!! 💞💞 Oh Daddy LGK was so kind, tolerant and friendly, that I even thought he was going to feed her. Oh he clacked loudly at her and after a few minutes she walked off gracefully. 🐤🎶🦢🎵 And what a heartwarming moment!! 😥🥰 Oh dear lovely Daddy LGK, your mission is accomplished!! Your precious TF chick has successfully fledged. 💞🌊🐥✈️💞 Thanks to you and your beloved LGL, he became a Magnificent Albatross, who is now out there exploring the skies and oceans. You two did an amazing job!! I'm so proud of you and your LGL and TF chick. 🥰🥰 Now it is time for your well-deserved rest. 💕💕 So stay safe under divine protection, replenish your energy and renew, be healthy & return safely to your homeland to reunite with your beloved LGL and raise your new chicks together with your love and devotion. 🙏🦢🌱🦢🙏 May God bless LGK, LGL and TF abundantly and protect them wherever they are. 🙏💞🙏 I wish this gorgeous Majestic Princess Albie would be fed by her parents or human guardians before she fledges. 🙏🌱🙏 Safe travels and stay safe Lovely Daddy LGK. 🙏🌊🦢🙏 Thank you very much for this precious memorable video, dear Lady Hawk. God bless you immensely, my precious friend. 🥰🥰💕🌿🐥🦢💚🐥🌿🌅💕🙏
All rather sad isn't it, dad returning to see his chick that just fledged. Oh what a beautiful area this is . Thank you so much for allowing us to glimpse into their lives
Ciao Lady Hawk and thanks for the LGK's return video. But, at the end of your comment, you write twice "LGK" to indicate TF's parents...see you soon on the other nests!!!
I feel your pain LGK, same goes for LGL, WYL and BOK.😥💔 I also love your babies very much. TF and TFT will always be extra special to me bc they are the very first Albies I have ever seen. I hope one day to see you all again!🙏🏼Safe travels! God bless you, and the entire Albatross colony.🙏🏻🙌🏻
Poor LGK, so happy for his successful fledge though, they worked hard this year! (As they always do) and I like how LGK was nice to the chick. The yellow banded chick was very cute 🥰🥰🥰. I think LGK definitely went down the hill to look around a little more for TF. Checking out TF’s stomping grounds lol, it was weird this year how TF left the natal nest. Though I know they said it happens sometimes. OGK sure looked adorable too when he sat down especially! Thanks for sharing Lady Hawk! 😊 was a great season!
Albie' post-fledge behavior certainly differs from that of raptors! Raptors train their fledgling chicks to hunt and improve their flying skills and sometimes have to encourage them to leave the nest area and find their own territory. It made me feel a bit better that LGK seemed to understand that TF had started his journey. It's hard to watch the parents look for their chicks but every albie parents goes through this and they and their ancestors have been doing it this way for millions of years. I enjoyed having another raptor fan along for the ride during my first albie season--thanks, @CenturianEagle!
@@6falconsue hi thank you falconsue!! It was great having you watch the albies they are amazing arent they! And I know it’s so crazy, I’m used to it now but I used to think why don’t these albies do things like raptors? Have the parents go out to sea with them and show them how to hunt etc, it’s amazing they have to go on their own, but you get it, it’s part of that journey and they must take on their own, and the parents understand that. Thanks for the reply 😊
Hello CenturianEagle you are very welcome! I can't believe another season is over! I think that LGK went down the hill to look for TF too - just like LGL did when she was in since TF had spent so much time in this area. I like that we got to see TF leaving his nest and exploring more this season then the past seasons. He had that wandering spirit in him early on! You know it is a misnomer that the raptors teach their young how to hunt. Many social media groups and even some mod chats have all romanticized that the young birds that stick around get to learn how to hunt from the parents. At best if they are paying attention and not squeeing or chasing after the parents, they will learn to hunt through observation of the adults. When the do leave the area - they will learn to hunt though trial and error and observation watching other eagles hunting and then trying to do it themselves. That is why it takes so long for them to perfect the skill. They end up stealing food or finding carrion on the ground to eat until they can successfully hunt and fish for themselves - it can take months. I think with the albatross - they will have to learn to hunt/fish on the ocean by trial and error and they will observe other seabirds all fishing the surface of the water as well. If the albie parents had to spend time showing them to hunt - they all would miss their window of migration back to South America. Just my educated guess! Take care CE - it was a great season! ♥
@@ladyhawk thanks for the reply Lady Hawk and for the information! The young raptors certainly get to observe their parents a lot though after leaving their nest and at this point the Albies have no observation of life at sea but yeah they must go and see other seabirds, seeing that you chose the word seabird instead of albatross made me realize there are lots of sea birds ! So that’s a really good point. And there are other albatross species too, so all kinds of birds flying around out there 😁 especially in the hotspots that they’re instinctually drawn to, it probably isn’t the constantly empty sky flying that I always imagine for the young albies when they fledge. Thank you for the information Lady Hawk! 🙏. I appreciate learning new things about the birds 😊
That would a nice thing to see but the chicks don't know how to feed themselves yet and need to figure this out on their own. However, in early October when the chicks and maybe the parents if still here, will all migrate to South America - maybe they do cross paths in the air or on the sea!
@ladyhawk It confused me when in your wonderful write up you said that "both LGK and LGK....." As I said, easily confused. 😁 Aren't these albies just something? So much fun to watch.
I have so many lingering questions! -how many chicks had these parents raised before? -are the chicks able to be tracked by the public (I know they could be tracked by experts)? -will TF & TFT come back as juveniles not yet old enough to raise chicks (I've seen juveniles inspecting chicks)? -could we ever see them again on land in New Zealand or only out to sea?
Hello irrobat question #1) LGK and LGL have been together since 2017. They have successfully raised 3 chicks (Karere, Tiaki and TF) their first season they were together the egg did not hatch. For BOK & WYL - this is their first breeding season and first chick - TFT. #2) No the chicks can't be tracked by the public but when they have GPS trackers on them all of us will be able to follow the chicks via the images updated on average daily (we will get a screenshot of location not an actual picture of them like we did with LGK LGL and Tiaki season). #3) TF and TFT will come back at ages 5-8 years old and are considered juvenile or adolescent albies. They are not old enough to raise chicks yet. On average, the chicks can successfully breed from 8-10 years of age. #4) We will be fortunate to see them return to Taiaroa Head as juveniles on land in 5-8 years. It is very difficult to see them out at sea.
