Kauai albatross: first day on land after 6 years at sea

  • This is a Laysan albatross who hatched in a nest on my lawn in Kaua'i. He fledged and stayed at sea for 6 years. I filmed him on his first day back on land, on a golf course. He had to relearn how to walk and how to speak albatross, and started by trying to copy nearby birds. The "eh,eh,eh" descending notes are what his parents would have called to him when they returned with food, that is the vocalization he would have remembered from when he was a chick. You will see his first clumsy attempts at displaying with other albatrosses. You can see clips from this long film and read more about him at albatrossdiary.com. Enjoy his first day back!

OMG, that's one of the best albatross videos I've ever seen. it had never occurred to me that after six years at sea, a young albatross would have forgotten how to speak albatross, forgotten how to walk and stand or rather her legs and feet need strengthening. Amazing enlightening video, a revelation. How quickly she remembers and gains strength, improved coordination👏👏👏. I love, adore these birds 💖💖💖

Hello, Cathy -- I stumbled upon this video and subsequently visited your Albatross Diary. Thank you, thank you for sharing these birds with us. I know it takes time and work to post information, but it's so wonderful for bird lovers to get to know their stories through you. I'm so envious that you get to live with these birds. I'm in the Pacific Northwest and we have lovely birds, but most not nearly as interesting as Albatross. I live on the water and get to see Bald Eagles fishing and playing in the wind. They even play chase with Seagulls sometimes, clearly without a predatory intent. Thanks again so much for your videos and pictures, but especially the wonderful narration so we can learn about their lives. ---L

Mahalo for sharing this wonderful video. I watched the last month of Kalama on the Cornell Bird Cam and am now watching the Royal Albatross in NZ. They are beautiful and fascinating birds. It's hard for me to fathom that they spend so much time at sea. I can't wait till they are tracked w/ Go Pro cams so we know more about their lives...

He's beautiful! It must have been so very exciting to see him again after all those years. Thanks for posting! I watched the whole thing and was cheering for him, especially at the end. He really had her attention for a moment there. He's so precious and he tried so hard to overcome how weak he was. How long did it take to regain his strength? Did he ever find a mate?

I have never seen a returning albatross take longer than overnight to get his land legs. It may even take less than that, but I generally do not spend several hours at a time observing them, so I don't know.
He doesn't have a mate yet. Perhaps he will find one this season. Some birds take longer than others, and I have no idea why!

@@cathygranholm8121 He, Tater as you named him, was here too young for creating a family, I think.
Here is said, that at around 10 years of age young males reach sexual maturity, that is the National Geografic, so I trust they know what they are saying - ruclips.net/video/LwwVnUekpeE/видео.html
Cathy, thank you very much, your observation is very exceptional, valuable and unique on YT, and Tater so much moving and so friendly. On this particular day I was tired and wanted to go home, but my diligence was certainly rewarded by seeing the bird I had last seen as a chick on his first day back!

Observe your doves! It is always surprising how much we still have to learn about the most common animals. One of my favorite books is about an ordinary snail, written by a woman with an illness that kept her largely immobile. A friend gave her a terrarium with a snail in it and she started to watch the little mollusk. She wrote a book called "The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating, " which won many awards. Check out ruclips.net/video/gf2suzMV_ME/видео.html to learn about it and to actually HEAR the sound of a wild snail eating!

This year I have seen him both in my neighborhood, near where his nest was when he was a chick, and also on the golf course where I filmed him. Yes, he did make friends after he moved back to his old neighborhood. I saw him on 28 different days, usually near the place in my yard where his nest was located. He displayed with several birds during that time. As part of a study of female/female pairs, the sexes of chicks were tested over a 2-year period, that is how we know that Tater is definitely a male.

As of yet, he does not have a mate. This season I mostly saw him in my neighborhood, not on the golf course, and a lot of the time he was within 20 feet of where his nest was located! Two of them were under 18, the other one got 45 days in jail and paid $1,000. They stole $3400 worth of bird monitoring equipment, paid for by Pacific Rim Conservation, the non-profit organization that collects data on the birds.
