I suppose the current equivalent would be the Bar Steward Sons of Val Doonican. They always remind me of the Barron Knights. Difference is they don't get on the TV & radio or in the charts.
1st time ever to see them and I am now 70years plus years. Always smiled when ever I heard their music played on the radio. Fun groups just don't exist these days!!!
these guys lasted for years in the pubs and nightclubs, outlasted many of the famous groups they were imitating, probably all gone now or retired bless em - though I now they were all working till relatively recently. talented send up of the times ,other groups liked them.
I was 9 in 64, but by the late 70's the Baron Knights where playing in Watford on a regular basis & my friends & I where always there to see them. A Brilliant Comedy Band!
When l was 13 in 1963, me and a couple of friends scored some tickets to see the Rolling Stones at Birmingham Town Hall. They were touring on their third released song which was Not Fade Away. The Barron Knights were the opening act, bet they have never played before bigger audiences before. Strange combination though.
They did fantastically well. Novelty acts usually have a short shelf life, but these lads had chart success in the 60s AND 70s. Over a decade after this their parodies of the likes of Leo Sayer, Brotherhood of Man, Kenny Rogers, BNellamy Brothers and even Lene Lovich(!) were hits.
Grew up on thier music in the 80s...got to see them live in Great Yarmouth in 96/97. I was in my mid 20s then...and there was a kid 2 seats over around 6 years old loving it too.
dont know what made me think of these guys right now but just had to find them. never had a tv in those days but listened to top of the pops. They were so funny at the time.
Saw these on a TV special on Channel 4 of all places. They did quite a good version of Have You Ever Been in Love by Leo Sayer. Their harmonies were spot on.
That was a different version from the 1965 single. The Rolling Stones' song on the single was Little Red Rooster, and the Supremes' Baby Love was the same, and then the third song was the Bachelors' I Wouldn't Trade You For The World.
- I did read when they first made the record they forgot to get permission from the original writers to use their music so the release was held up for several months, luckily they all agreed
I've had the original UK 45 on Columbia/EMI for years, just a couple months ago found out it was released in the US on Epic, so I snagged a copy, imagine my surprise when I played it and it was this different version! Jack Good was a UK producer but Shindig was a US program so he must have had them come over to promote the Epic release with the less-UK-centric content (no Sandie Shaw, as Girl Don't Come was not a very big hit here, for example)...Either way, great to see comedy & pop melded so well!
lynne thompson Freddie and the Dreamers track on call up the groups was You were made for me "I don't want to be a corporal in the cavalry. Please don't pick on me caus I am only five foot three. Now I don't like the army life the air force don't like me, and I canr join the na...a...vy caus I get sick at se,e ,e ,e ,e a
I think that's the performance on American bandstand using "canned" screaming which was all the rage in the states. Someone used to hold up a sign reading Applaud/scream and the sheep obeyed.
And the rest... "The Bachelors could return.... to the dear old emerald Isle, working in the factory, would they keep their smile....?" da da da da, da da da dum. I don't want to gop to wooorrrrrk on me bike in the rrrain So keep buying all our recorrrds Then we won't clock in again" etc etc Incidentally, what about the one where the rubbish the politicicians, and sing about the virtues of replacing them "with all our fabvourite stars"? Anyone got that one?
@@OneJohnFiveTwelve I joined a group on Facebook called Born in Fifties Britain and in the comments someone mentioned the first line of that song and that it was the Baron Knights who sang it. So, as l couldn't sleep last night, l followed the trail onto RUclips, trawled through the comments and voila, there it was in yours. I was so happy haha. I vaguely remember my mum singing it when she was doing her housework, but she didnt know what the words were either, she sort of mumbled her way through the last two lines lol. 😊
Thank God they don't make crap like this anymore. What a load of S. In the 90s a similar crap thing called Stars on 45 came out which was just an updated version of these clowns. I suppose the law of averages means something else will come out soon. I think Pinky and Perky started it all.
True entertainers - they don't make them like this anymore sadly - in a word, brilliant and still getting new audiences even today decades on.
I suppose the current equivalent would be the Bar Steward Sons of Val Doonican. They always remind me of the Barron Knights. Difference is they don't get on the TV & radio or in the charts.
wish it was still the 60's.
I do agree all the best music that’s for sure
Drop some " acid " and it will be, man.
Me too great songs
Same here.
1st time ever to see them and I am now 70years plus years. Always smiled when ever I heard their music played on the radio. Fun groups just don't exist these days!!!
I still smile when I hear them and beside being a fun group they were darned good!
I was about 12 in 1965, I watched this show whenever I could.
Snap I was also 12 and memories of seeing them in my home town of leighton buzzard a very popular bunch of lads
That Freddie Garrity was spot on.
I loved hearing the Barron Knights when I was young. So funny and always sounded like the acts they were taking the piss of.
Absolutely brilliant - not just the singing, but the body language, too.
Brilliant singer. The harmonies are fabulous, and recorded when there were no electronic vocalizers around.
It's a shame that the Baron knights are not around today to lighten things up
The Barron Knights. With Duke d Mond were brilliant
these guys lasted for years in the pubs and nightclubs, outlasted many of the famous groups they were imitating, probably all gone now or retired bless em - though I now they were all working till relatively recently. talented send up of the times ,other groups liked them.

This is brilliant remember the but to see it again amazing
Simply amazing. Comedy and talent at its very best.

Think they used to be a support group for the Beatles as well.
What a classy lady loved this song
I lived in Dunstable and my next door neighbour was Duke du Mond, had some great times with the group during the sixties.
Now I feel really old.
Thanks for posting and thanks Barron Knights for being so wonderful.

Great novelty group!

Brilliantly they were so good 👍👍👍
They were brilliant and I was lucky enough to get to see them !!
Love it. I was 3 years old this year. Had a couple of these early singles. 🙂
Thanks for posting. I'm old enough to remember loving it on TV.
Saw these on a TV special on Channel 4 of all places. They did quite a good version of Have You Ever Been in Love by Leo Sayer. Their harmonies were spot on.
I recall watching this on TV, also saw them live Beatles Christmas show at finsbury park Astoria aka rainbow 2 years previous
absolutely love the barron knights 😂😂😂😂😂😂remember the great songs from the 70's and 80's they had a taste of aggro and who shot jr 😂😂😂😂😂😂excellent
saw them many times at the Sheffield Fiesta brilliant vocalists and very funny
i listened to them on a transistor radio...
Thanks for posting, nice to hear again after many years.
They were great!
I remember it well 😁
Saw them in the Isle of man.
I've still got the 45 single after these years.
I agree with you trillion percent dude
Fantastic, where are they now. Great 60s music.
My dad played the bass for a band in Liverpool way back then. The bass was probably bigger than himself lol
Brilliant!
brilliant, you dont see acts like that anymore.
Awesome 1965
Cute - a friend says they did a different medley every Xmas.
They did those bands proud, Freddie and the Dreamers for the win.
Brilliant. Before Madness, there was the Barron Knights.
you never see bands like this anymore comedy class wish it was like this again. but it all backing tracks no live bands now
What a talented band
Excellent!
Brilliant good old fashioned entertainment 🎶🎶🎶🥰👏🇬🇧⛽️
0.32 Gum-chewing Wyman. Excellent!
With his upright bass guitar.
Great entertainers..:)
Brilliant band always...!!!......Look up their William Tell Overture......they could really turn it on for real when they wanted to.....!!!!!!!
These are so funny. my sisters had this record. I'm shure.
When I saw baron knights Russ Abbott was with them, a great night couldn't stop laughing all night
The Barron Knights are still working, the only original member is Pete Langford, the short blonde one.
SUPER!
Got the singles 😊😂
Brill! Hadn't seen this vid b4, so cheers 4 sharing!
They used to appear at the Mecca Stevenage regularly back in the sixties.
Nothing but excellent i do love parody
Brilliant 😁🇮🇲🇮🇲
Nice 👍🏿
Awesome

Can't help wonder if they didn't modify the selections for the American audience.
I DON'T WANT TO GO TO WORK ON ME BIKE IN THE RAIN.
BIKE IN THE RAIN,
SO KEEP BUYIN' ALL ME RECORDS,
THEN I'LL NEVER WORK AGAIN.
The "like" button didn't work, so add one!
I danced to them at the Lido in Balloch in 65 or 66- good band.
Saw them once at butlins and they were great singers and very funny, I've got it in my head that russ Abbott was one of them ?
Russ was in the Black Abbott`s i think.
The UK single was a tad different in terms of track selection, but they were very good (I've still got the vinyl I bought as an eleven year old!)
- I did read when they first made the record they forgot to get permission from the original writers to use their music so the release was held up for several months, luckily they all agreed
@OneJohnFiveTwelve Ah, found it. "Barron Knights Under New Management "
Where about's in the uk is this band from?
Leighton buzzard, in bedfordshire
cool
Great post, but do you have another by the BT's called ''Call up the bands'' where they all join the armed forces ?
It was called "Call Up The Groups" from 9th July 1963 reaching no.3 in the U.K. chart.
@@TheBim1987 Much later than 1963.

this is different from the Pop Go the Workers, I had. Mine was Rolling Stones, 3 Degrees, Beatles and The Bachelors
3 Degrees? They came 10 years later, methinks...
sorry - The Supremes (Baby Love)
and thinking about it The Freddy and the Dreamers song was from 'Call Up the Groups'.

Used to have "Call up the groups". Very clever. NB. Groups were called GROUPS in those days. Not the pan-american BANDS.
I've got both singles, Call Up The Groups and Pop Go The Workers.
Rick Huxley from The Dave Clark Five played with this band after The DC5 broke up. Are there any videos of him playing with this band?
1:54 the name song is?
It's a parody of 'Baby Love'.
oh right thanks
+therotiv4 It is a funny parody of "Baby Love" by The Supremes.
Like the smurf take off
Now, I've heard of using laugh tracks in comedy sitcoms. Since when did bands use scream tracks during performances?
I think that's the performance on American bandstand using "canned" screaming which was all the rage in the states. Someone used to hold up a sign reading Applaud/scream and the sheep obeyed.
They really repeated the streamers/Dreamers rhyme from Call Up The Groups?
Don’t we all.
Boris wasn’t born 😁😂

Thanks for this! I was never able to make out what they were singing after 'bike in the rain'. At last, after all these years. 😊
@@myapinion7532 my pleasure Mya. Fancy that, eh? It was ten years ago I posted that, and you replied just 5 hrs ago! Must be something of a record!

Unadulterated rubbish.
@guynutting... You need a sense-of-humour transplant!
@chrissymon could you explain why I lack a sense on humour? Perchance you need an intellect implant.
What a way to butcher some classic songs.
