      English speakers often make the mistake by asking "Can I sit here?" when they really should be asking "May I sit here?". This is the same between 能 (can) and 可以(may), and it's also a common mistake among native Chinese speakers. People don't pay attention of what they say.

      In Spanish 能 and 可以 are both Poder. ¿Puedo sentarme aquí? means both "May I sit here?" and "Do I have the ability to sit here?" Although most people wouldn't think it's the latter. I suppose it would be more proper in Spanish to say "¿Puedo sentarme aquí, con permiso?"
      But English and Chinese, one means Can I while the other one means May I. And the speakers of both Chinese and English make the mistake of asking Can I sit here when they really should be asking May I sit here (con permiso). It's not an problem in Spanish since there is no distinction.

    Great video Yimin. Ive heard so many different explanations for this. While i am here.....dong, mingbai, liaojie and lijie. All mean understand i think. When i was travelling in china i used ting bu dong and wo bu mingbai A LOT along with much shaking of the head. How about liaojie and lijie ? Are there times when you must use these instead of dong or mingbai ?

    • @yiminchinese
      @yiminchinese  3 года назад +2

      hello Ian, good question. yes dong and mingbai are quite exchangeable, and I m sure you are using it right, about lijie and liaojie , we only need to worry about lijie, because liaojie doesn't mean "understand", it just mean "know well". for example, wo liaojie ta. it means you know very well about this person, what kind of person he is .
      so talking about lijie, compared with dong and mingbai, lijie is MORE FORMAL, and DEEPER , normally we use in formal occasions ,and normally when you use lijie, you not only understand, you also take the side. we use it to comfort someone, for example, wo lijie ni de xinqing, I understand how you feel. wo lijie ta de jueding, I understand his decision, means not only you know why he decided that, the subtext is also that you would do the same when you were in his position.
      hope it helped Ian, don't hesitate to ask if you have further doubt, have a nice day !💙💙🤗

    Hi, dear teacher! At 2:49 you pronounced tian in a way that I didn't expect. I always think of the final of tian as rhyming with the Japanese currency. Did I hear you incorrectly? I listened several times.

      hello Linden, you are right, the pronunciation of 天is tiān, however, there is something called 儿化音(ér huà yīn ), in some words ,we tend to put put a (r )sound in the final in speaking ,we curl the tongue a little to make that sound, like 聊天儿(liao tian r ),好玩儿(hao wan r ),一点儿(yi dian r ),it's out a complete “er"sound, just "r ", sometimes we write it completely too, sometimes not, in my case, I didn't write it😜hope it helped, and sorry for causing the confusion 🐾ask me if you have further doubt 💕

      As I know, it's very important when we're learning a Latin language is to memorize the word with the article together, so this way we can't mistake the gender of the word.

    It's made me remember the word 借. What a hardship. In Portuguese and English they have different words for each meaning, to borrow and to lend, emprestar e devolver. Not just the context. In Chinese the same word might be considered. The context might make all the difference

    Chinese is often "lost in translation". Some words don't make sense or seem unnecessary unless you know the true chinese meaning, not only the translation. Thanks for explanation!
