Great video. Did this yesterday on an 07 E85. Shop wanted $600 to do this. $85 in parts and this video and it's done. Took me about 4 hours, but that's including a trip to Autozone to get the correct valve cover gasket. Apparently the design was changed on motors built around October 2006. I needed the new design that has three separate pieces for the spark plug valleys vs. one long piece on the earlier model. Thanks!
AWESOME video! Amazing attention to detail here, thanks. But just want to comment in case anyone happens to be watching this and have a 2004 2.5, there are different steps to take, so def. don't assume it's the same... as I initially did. Still a great starting point though. I realize the engine spec was clearly stated in the beginning of the vid, but just wanted to mention it. 😎
This was an excellent video - really appreciate you uploading it. For me hardest parts were 1) Getting the harness clip off the front of the engine 2) Getting the gasket to stay in place when refitting it. For the former it took time, but for the latter if I were doing again I would get some gasket adhesive to ensure it stays in place during install . Thank you again for your help
Thank you for this video. I own an x3. I'm not a mechanic but have done my cooling fan, cooling hoses, transfer case, windshield seal, pano motor, plug and packs and other stuff. All these things done with success by YT videos and reading on the web. I started hearing a whistle from the engine bay with no cel. I isolated it to the valve cover close to the fire wall. BMW wants thousands for this job. I see on eBay a new cover and seals can be bought for around $100. There are more expensive covers but I can't quite convince myself there is a difference worth spending more. If someone reads this and can tell me I'm wrong please do. This job looks very time consuming but simple. I am going to drain the oil and run a seafoam before doing this job...figured might as well just clean it all up. Thanks for this video! Giving me some confidence in this job for sure.
Amazing video! Thanks for doing this on a BMW Z4, I love, and I own that car. Mine is 2003, I got it in 2018 with 100k miles on it, I will try to maintain it at least 100k more miles.
Excellent! This was the next best thing to having you do it for me. One thing I would do different is transfer the oil filler cap to the new valve cover right away. I'm not as good a mechanic as you, and sure enough I'd drop something down that hole and have to take it all apart again.
Thanks for the video... it was amazing. Is there another name for the "Fuel Injector" described at 4:59? I need to replace one of those clips. When I search a parts manual fuel injector--- I can not find that part, just the Silver tube.
Those with a N52N engine (2007 or newer N52) will need the part 11157559528 for crankcase breather hose as the oil separator is integrated into the manifold. Those with N52 2006 and older need 11157522931 as the oil separator is outside the manifold.
Awesome video! I have the 2006 z4 3.0si engine, and oily smoke from exhaust manifold told me it was time to do this. Very detailed and helpful video!!! You didn't mention the step for recalibrating the valvetronic motor. My biggest worry was taking that darn thing off, getting it back on right, and then making sure what ever was needed to recalibrate it happened. Looks straightforward! Is it just automatic on startup or are there special steps to re-calibrate?
Help please. I’m replacing the valve cover gasket on my 2007 BMW Z4, the center bolt holding the cover down is missing. Ya know the one in the very center. Video says 10 mm but how long is it and what other size info please.gonna go get a replacement
A bmw specialist wanted £250 in labour cost, I asked if the staff know what they’re doing? He said yes. Then I said it will take them no longer than 2 hours. And £50 per hour rate is more than enough. Man was claiming it takes around 4-6 hours..... after double seeing this video, I’m convinced he’s just a crook. I can do this my self in about 3 hours max.
Shops will charge you flag hours. Doesn’t matter if it takes 30 minutes or 4 hours if manufacturer flags it a certain hours that’s what a shop will charge you because that’s what the technician gets paid for
@@HowtoAutomotive no way!! I know this video is kind of old but are you still the same mechanic from the video? I would love to get this done to my 2007 z4, I love to have my cars on point but I am not a Do it your self kind of guy in any way! IDK if you can share your mechanic shop name and estimate of cost for work (Labor/OEM PARTs). my z4 is not leaking oil yet, but I noticed the valve cover is starting to get oil around it.
What dip shit gives this video a thumbs down? Great video! I'm a mechanic, I just like to watch a few videos, to make sure I know any tips for a job that I haven't done yet. Awsome job on clarity of talking and the video itself. How many times you watch a video and it looks like a 3 year old was operating the camera. I dont have to watch any more , you answered all my questions.
@@HowtoAutomotive okay this smoke is coming through the AC and as well as smoking from the heat panel side. It is a grey, fuel smelling as well. Would you recommend going towards this repair first?
JB BESLER This is most likely the cause of that smell. I would do it first and and then pressure wash all the boiled head hitting the exhaust. And doublecheck For additional leaks.
Ro Jacob because they’re clipped in on the bottom of the cylinder head and clipped into the cover itself also they will snag on everything as you go to remove them.

I ua e just get 2006 z4 amd i think i need to replace headgasket do you think it is same as yours ?
Great video. A good number of your affiliate links are not working
I wonder what year that model is. I have a 2006 3.0si and it has an aluminium valve cover that requires slightly different gaskets.
Zack Komachkov If I remember right this was a 2007

Thanks to you, I will try it!
Hugo Salvado overall it’s not too bad of a job. Good luck with the repair thank you for watching!
Do we need to disconnect Battery terminal?
Could anyone tell me what the torque spec. On the vano’s motor bolts are? Thankks
Would this be the reason why my engine is smoking around this part of the engine? :0 please respond...
If that valve cover is leaking bad enough To where it’s dripping on the exhaust you will definitely see smoke.

Why is it needed to take the metal sleeves out? By the spark plug

My mechanic ask for £800 for this job how much that will cost normally?
Doing this on my 08 Z4 3.0i I’ve got an oil leak and the mechanic is charging me 1600$ for the replacement. Save some money and do it myself
Mine just quoted me $425. You need another mechanic.
Isn’t that an n52?
