The Difference Between a Dietitian and a Nutritionist

- Lauren Cornell, both a Registered Dietitian and CEO/Founder of Lauren Cornell Nutrition speaks on the basics of nutrition, and the difference between a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist. Nutrition, the science of nourishment, is the chemistry of the foods we eat and the biochemistry of body digesting, absorbing, and metabolizing the nutrients. Whether it is preventing a disease, an emotional connection, or just tasty food, Lauren believes that nutrition reaches further into our food choices and how we can be in control of our health.
We learn that the course in which an individual becomes credentialed, separates a Registered Dietitian from a Nutritionist. Registered Dietitians possess a clinical background, which would allow them to take part in a patient’s care in a health setting.
Lauren Cornell, both a Registered Dietitian and CEO/Founder of Lauren Cornell Nutrition speaks on how both sugar and caffeine are detrimental to the youth. Although we need sugar to function, constantly eating or drinking in high amounts can be extremely harmful long-term. The continuous fluctuation of blood sugar levels is stressful to the body, as it is struggles to get the sugar into the cells at a high rate. Caffeine is a stimulant that puts the body into a stress response of fight or flight, and similar to sugar, this constant biological rollercoaster is harmful to the body. Optimizing hydration and eating a well balanced diet is an excellent alternative to sustain proper bodily function throughout the day.

I am a Clinical Nutritionist in Trinidad and Tobago. I have my MSc in Medical Nutrition. In my country we are required to complete 2 Practicums for our BSc and register with a board. I find it severely annoying that often registered Nutritionists are degregated to not being as qualified as RDs. We do all the same courses are taught the same information, do all the same clinicals etc just some of us prefer choosing Practicums over clinical internships because we desire to work more on the field of foodservice, gastroenterology and not be institutionalized to figures. I run my practice and update my programs based in evidence based research, I work with medical doctors for my patients. RDs are not more or differently qualified that Registered Nutritionists. But to me we actually have a greater understanding of food science and functional patient consumption than just the statistical, charted, structured style of Dietitics. To me that approach manages chronic nutritional diseases more than cure or prevent and I think Real Nutritionists need to be more vocal generally of our role and function.
Thank you so much for taking the time out to watch this video and giving your input in your particular education and experience. At the time of this interview this information was valid in the state of California and has since changed since the interview.
WE appreciate you breaking down the difference and we are sure someone who is looking to gather more information on this subject will see your comment and be gracious of your the time you spent in explanation!
@@Awiseway Thank you for the video. My primary care doctor refered me to a Dietician and now I know the difference.🤔
Outstanding job clarifying between the two! Both are great resources for people looking to map out a healthy lifestyle. Thanks for sharing!
THANK YOU! THIS... THIS explains the difference... not just education and "credentials" but the actual difference in practice and focus
Good to finally know the difference, good stuff.
Absolutely! That why when you really have some healthy issues, lifestyle change, or dietary needs a Dietitian is the way to go because of their schooling involved .. and thats a HUGE difference in the choices we make!
Great information. The word "Diet" in dietitian threw me off but he true meaning is great.
very helpful thank you! I now know I want to specifically be a dietician not just a nutritionist😁
I notice that. It a shame! Healthy food is medicine! I plan on not getting too down about those who don't want help and focus on those who do. Easier said than done I know.
thanx alot for advice, we learn through this video

Wow, I find your definitions quite different from us in Africa.Personally am a registered clinical nutritionist in Kenya.I have gone through degree course in Nutrition accompanied by attachment ant internship in hospital set up upon which I got registered by the Kenya Nutritionists and Dietitian Institute. My scope of work has much to do with patients in the hospital.I think the bottom line here should be that 'Is the person competent and qualified to work in the given area?' and not really bringing out the superiority issue of which one seems stronger than the other between nutritionist and dietitian. My opinion though.
We appreciate you taking the time out to explain your experiences in your area. At the time of interview the qualifications in California was different and since then has changed including the definition. Every state and country is different and we love the fact that you broke that down to any one who comes to this particular video looking for more details answers in different areas of the world!
Please tell us what the ending song is or where to find this melody ?
Alan Garcia it made by our in house producer
That is not true in all states, in some states you can work in hospital if you are Certified Nutritionalist Specialist - education and clinical hours requirements are the similar to RDs except you have to have Masters or PhD which I think why RDs are changing their requirements as well
Which one makes more money??
nutrition is a lifestyle
I love kale salads. My question is the dressing that I use. Depending on the dressing am I taking away from the benefits of the kale and what would you recommend using?
B_JAMAR86 ranch dressing lots of ranch dressing buttermilk ranch dressing
If you want to use dressing any vinaigrette would be the best option. You can also use lemon, lime, salt, pepper, or even olive oil to give it flavor without dressing!
You have way too much time on your hands.
Thank you. This helped me to understand that I need a dietician rather than a nutritionist to help me get my diet under control.
The Video provided you with outdated information. Either a Dietitian Or Nutritionist can help you. They are both Experts on Food & Nutrition for Disease prevention and weight management.
Many Nutritionists with Bachelor, Masters or Doctoral degrees in nutrition Or in a clinical area in the healthcare field met the same requirements as a Dietitian with the science courses, extensive coursework in food & nutrition and completed a supervised practice/internship. They too work in Hospitals.
_The thought that all Dietitians tend to have more education & credentials, is NOT always the case. That's what some Dietitians don't know Or like to admit._
i wanna do my masters in human nutrition and dietetics so is there any prominent institute in U.S.A

Do RdN make a comfortable salary?
Sam Samara As of the end of 2016... the average salary/wage for a Registered Dietitian or Nutritionist was $57k salary/ $27 an hour for non salary
I know some Dieticians on $80k+ in the medical field
This is not accurate information. It really depends on what State you live in. In the state of Washington for example, the state licenses CN Certified Nutritionists, and CD Certified Dietitians. To be a CN you need a masters of phd in nutrition. to be a CD you need to be an RD. Both can practice MNT (Medical Nutrition Therapy) and work in hospital settings, bill insurance, etc. Please update your information because you give nutrtitionists that are licensed and have Masters and PHD a bad name. In Minnesota, you can become a CN with a PHD in nutrition. There are Non RD routes to practicing Medical Nutrition Therapy.
Annette Marsden thank you for your input on the updated information
bonjour,
i live in Paris, and know, i need to lose weight, tried to count points and calories, and do not do well with this - i even signed up for online site ( sparkpeople),to help me counting calories. now my doc here , in Paris, said i must contact a doc to lose weight ( i am 35 pounds over weight - and here, i am considered obese)
can you advise me , on how what to do next ?? i am getting ready to order some pills over the internet , thank you
+dixie b Go to a (clinical) dietician.. they will calculate your BMR (basal metabolic rate) and your AMR (active metabolic rate).. these are the amount of calories you can eat in a day.. they will give you a balanced diet to help you lose your excess weight.
I know there's no reason to believe me on this but it's true.. I myself am a student on his way to become a dietician so while I'm not an expert in the field (yet).. I still know what the best course of action is for you... don't go buying some pills because without a good meal plan.. they won't do anything..
I sincerely hope this helps! Best of luck to you!
drentox
thank you very much for the advice - but what is clinical ? i have to go to a hospital ?
+dixie b The way it goes (here in Belgium) is you go to your doctor and he gives you a referral to a dietitian (most of the time this will be in a hospital) OR you can look on the internet for a private practice dietitian and ask for a consult there :).
drentox i found a lady in my local pharmacy that says she can help me lose weight - so I should ask her if she is clinical ?
+dixie b i would ask her what her credentials are.. in my opinion a pharmacy isn't really a place to go to for dietary advice.. don't know how it is in France though.. your house doctor or finding a dietitian practice would be your best bet imo
gud career,I really like it.
Sopia Ahmad thank you for taking the time to watching this video of Lauren Cornell. Watch the full interview here, bit.do/Lauren-Cornell-Nutrition
200 choices a day? 🤔 that sounds extreme
Google it! You’ll be surprise of the vast number who underestimate their choices of food they can make in a day.
You didn't explain clearly.
Okay, so a dietician is better than a nutritionist. I'll give the dietician a callback. I'd called her about my prediabetic condition.
Well and Fit 1 Now We are glad that our interview with Lauren Cornell help you make a decision!

Before I called, I got thinking, I can at least do a LOT of research on line before appearing in her office. Or maybe I won't have to go in at all!
