The other thing the shootout didn’t account for is the A95L comes with panel scratches right out of the box. I’ll stick with the superior, flawless LG G4 panel.
What’s up Villaman, thanks for review . I ordered this 83 inch on Friday the price dropped a little at Best Buy . Waiting for delivery date this week or so . I had the 85 inch Sony Bravia 9 but the google tv bugs and things pushed me to continue my search. So I’m going to try this g4 in 83. Thx again
I would def not get 83” for rrp. When qd oled does 83/85 those premiums will tank. It’s insane to cost 50% more for 6” extra. Nice job mentioning the heat - very few mentioned that and in smaller rooms it’s a factor for sure. It shows LG has much better heatsink compared to Samsung as the image retention is better despite the higher temps it reaches.
Good to see you still posting and it’s nice to see that you’re being recognised by others by being invited to the shoutout . How good are your blinds at blocking out light ? My next tv placement is right in front of windows but I want to close the blinds d on the windows properly
I upgraded to G4 83" from CX 77". At first I was a bit disappointed, feeling it wasn't such a big qualitative difference considering the price and hassle. However, after a few months I can say it's noticeably better. I actually see the biggest differences in SDR, which feels almost HDR-like in games and movies. For HDR the most noticeable upgrade is that it preserves more detail in the darker areas, and yes that extra brightness gives a bit more punch for the highlights. If you're debating 77" vs 83" ... I understand the conflict and I can't really help. The cost difference feels unfair, right? Both are huge and with both of them you will not "see pixels" at 4K even up close, so there is no downside to 83" other than cost. All I can do is promise you will not regret going for the biggest you can fit, but your bank account may be angry at you. Honestly I wish my screen was even bigger than 83". Room for a future upgrade. :) For me personally the upgrade simplified my sound setup because the CX didn't support DTS passthrough, so I had to pass it through my AV receiver. With the G4 I can use eARC for everything. LG's support for all the video and audio formats is a big plus. Worth noting that G4 switches between SDR and HDR modes much, much faster than the CX, which sounds like a tiny thing, but was annoyingly slow with the CX.
Not a surprise you "only" noted a brightness difference with the specular highlights ... because: HDR works with ABSOLUTE luminances ! ... means: for the most part of a movie (that's for up to around 300 nits) your CX and the G4 show exactly the SAME brightness therefore ! But ... the G4 does get much brighter with specular highlights (95% of contents are mastered with 1,000nits) ... where the CX already has to use tone mapping instead. In other words: the G4 can generate (with it's 1,000+ nits) contrasts of 2,000,000 : 1 and more ... where the CX (with the max. 650 nits) is capped at 1,300,000 : 1 ... THAT's what you see: a MUCH better contrast on the G4 with more intensively shining highlights !!! For SDR: the G4 CAN get 60% brighter than the CX (max. 513 vs 321 nits)... which translates with SDR to the entire picture ... unlike HDR: which always shows the identical scene brightnesses on every tv. What is still widely misunderstood: You CAN adjust the picture brightness with SDR (becaue it works with RELATIVE brightnesses) ... BUT you CAN'T with HDR (because it works with ABSOLUTE brightnesses) !!!
Villaman u just be you. Don’t let Andrew Robinson boss you around and tell you it’s his way or the highway. Your channel matters Villaman! You matter Sir! Bully’s like Andrew Robinson are a dime a dozen.
Amazing man! Thank u so much! So watching sports at 720/1080p from satellite reveiver will it look choppy? It also includes 4K channel. I have an Edge lit 65 inch tv, do u think i will regret changing to 83” G4? Any pixelation? On 720/1080p content like frim netflix or so on,will be watching 8 to 15 ft distance “in a soo bright big windows room. Thank u so much! 🙏🏼
I don’t think the amount of pixelation on lower quality content will be a deal breaker- especially at that distance, but it is a noticeable change from an LCD TV
The heat concerns me…. It should concern buyers too… not saying it’s a problem, but it could definitely cause issues if not built to a spec to handle that heat, consistently…. Anyone who knows tech, knows excessive heat is always the enemy. Just makes me wonder how far off liquid cooled, and even fan cooled displays….
I previously had an S95C and could feel more heat of that screen than the G4 (both 77). Not saying it can't be an issue but the LG seems like it has less of an issue. Can't attest to the S95D but I'd imagine same issue.
55 inches is just so small for the price they want for G4 $2499 is expensive (for me), I think you'd be happy with S90D at that size and not notice too many differences It's only $1699 atm which is almost $1000 cheaper , you'd save a lot of money.. or you could get a larger S90D like 77 inches for the same price you'd pay for G4 right now... but if money was non-issue between those 2 I'd take the 55 inch G4. Personally even 65 inches feels too small for me nowadays , I need 77 inches no less.
Decent review but your untreated room sound echoey and detracts from your presentation. Use a lapel microphone to make this a non-issue until your upgrade your acoustics
Thanks.. I guess? 😅 Fun fact; a portion of the room is already treated, but I have plans for the recording side, so that’s in the works. I have ways to fix it in post, that I’ve done in the past, but this was also an experiment to see how many ppl complained. 1 and counting!
Been considering this TV. But not a fan of the UI and that wand controller. I think I'm just going to wait for the 2025 follow-up to the Sony A95L ( A95M ?) when I jump into Oled. Hopefully Sony will make an announcement in the Spring since they skipped CES these past couple years. Hoping to have the colors of a QD-Oled with the brightness of this G4 or higher since Sony, what I'm assuming, would be using a Gen 4 panel for their next QD-Oled model.
If you really care about picture quality, then you want a different streaming quality then you want an Apple TV or similar. Which means you don't really need to interact with the OS. (This goes for Samsung and Sony too) Also, you can just use the navigation buttons and not the mouse mode pointer.
