@@Odin18046 you forgot something: "german" is not only the borders of modern "Germany". In fact, the Germans are multiple germanic tribes with common language and culture. Therefore also Austrians and german Swiss count as "Germans". As well as Dutch, but they have developed apart within centuries.
It's probably because during this time, Germanic groups weren't as distant as they are now. High German really didn't take pesidence during the medival ages.

Many non-germans don't know that germany wasn't a unified country for several hundreds of years and that every state in germany and even areas within states have their own unique dialect that sounds nothing like the others. Just compare the franconian with the hessian dialect, it's both german but extremely different despite being close to eachother, that's because both areas were their own "country" for hundres of years, so it can't be compared to dialect differences in the UK or France for example. In Germany the dialect differences are huge, especially in central and south germany. F.e.: I was surprised when i listened to the germans of the german minority in alsace and lorraine, because i understood what they said perfectly despite their german having had a huge french influence for hundreds of years

As a Dutchman who lives close to the German border this is surprisingly easy to understand (surprised because its old German but its kinda similair to the Dutch dialect we speak as well Edit: Might have not been too clear about the ''Dutch Dialect'' I myself am from the Eastern Province called ''Gelderland'' and then the most Eastern part of it called the ''Achterhoek'' (literally translated: Behind corner'' which isn't a compliment lmao, due to the fact it was a quite underdeveloped rural region. We have something called Plat Praten, which is ''Lower Saxon'' or Neder Saksisch (just looked this last part up incase anyone was interested in it) My point is that it feels to me this lower Saxon helps me understand it a lot better, but I might be wrong ^^ just wanted to share.

The words are understandable if German is your mother tongue but not if you not a native speaker ho wants to learn German you should listen to modern German songs if you want to learn German because no one talks like that Today.

Depends on where you're from i think. Many non-germans don't know that germany wasn't a unified country for several hundreds of years and that every state in germany and even areas within states have their own unique dialect that sounds nothing like the others. Just compare the franconian with the hessian dialect, it's both german but extremely different despite being close to eachother, that's because both areas were their own "country" for hundres of years, so it can't be compared to dialect differences in the UK or France for example. In Germany the dialect differences are huge, especially in central and south germany.
F.e.: I was surprised when i listened to the germans of the german minority in alsace and lorraine, because i understood what they said perfectly despite their german having had a huge french influence for hundreds of years

As a Dutchman who lives close to the German border this is surprisingly easy to understand (surprised because its old German but its kinda similair to the Dutch dialect we speak as well
Edit: Might have not been too clear about the ''Dutch Dialect'' I myself am from the Eastern Province called ''Gelderland'' and then the most Eastern part of it called the ''Achterhoek'' (literally translated: Behind corner'' which isn't a compliment lmao, due to the fact it was a quite underdeveloped rural region. We have something called Plat Praten, which is ''Lower Saxon'' or Neder Saksisch (just looked this last part up incase anyone was interested in it)
My point is that it feels to me this lower Saxon helps me understand it a lot better, but I might be wrong ^^ just wanted to share.

It's not modern German it's old German language used in the middle age. There has been only one source/family who had the lastname "von Henkelmann" but many many just called "Henkelmann".

They are mostly praising Jerusalem for being the land where God walked in human form.

It’s really more about pilgrimage than crusading.

i went to spain last haloween and one day when i went to a local store i saw a cashieer in the store with a medievil suit of armor and when i went to pay for the items i said to him Deus vult brother. after i packed my bag with the items from the store i saw he didnt scan my 6 pack of beer, i show him my recet but before i said anything he just said its fine brother go enjoy the day.
