  • Join us as we jump on a train in Antwerp, Belgium and head across the country to the quaint town of Ypres (aka Ieper) for our anniversary weekend. We explore WWI battlefields and memorials, sample some tasty Belgian beer, and revel in the cozy vibes of our B&B.
Day 1 - Our journey from Antwerp to Ypres was lovely, transitioning from one of Belgium's largest cities to its serene, rural charm. Upon our arrival, we checked into our home for the weekend - The Main Street Hotel. This boutique B&B, nestled in the heart of Ypres, instantly warmed our hearts with its cozy ambiance and personal touches. After settling in, we embarked on an exploration of Ypres' quaint old market square.
Day 2 - Our day started early with a hearty breakfast at The Main Street Hotel (where Richie had the best omelette of his life!). We joined the 1/2 day Flanders Battlefield tour, visiting somber WWI memorials, remnants of WWI trenches, and cemeteries. The tour provided us with a sobering glimpse into the past and the human narratives that unfolded in these very fields. After the tour was over, we grabbed some lunch and took a brewery tour at the Kazematten Brewery.
Day 3 - On our final day, we savored our last breakfast at The Main Street Hotel, taking in the cozy setting one last time. After checking out, we took a leisurely stroll around the town, soaking up the last bit of Ypres' charm before bidding it farewell. We then set off for Antwerp to be reunited with our pup, Penny!
Thank you for being here...until next time...

As a Belgian and history buf I have never been to Ypres and that makes me feel ashamed a bit. I did spend some time in "De Westhoek" behind the IJzer river the part of Flemish Belgium you are in. I was a drafted conscript soldier long time ago and I had my militairy training in Kokzijde on the coast not that far from ypress. I rushed home on the other side of Flanders every weekend as fast as my legs could carry me so I bypassed Ypress and missed out on a great oportunity. I swore I would never ever return to that part of the country it is time to break that promise to myself.

It's a pity, you didn't get the last post in the gate itself. the sound there is really special and gives you goosebumps. I think I've been there 3 times, since I am from Bruges. Have you done flanders fields, the museum?

3:44 Mosquitos are gourmets. They only like certain types of blood..Everybody else they will normally leave alone but if you got their taste of blood they'll invite the whole family to the buffet.

That hotel was a bit too much for my taste. I used to run a very basic BnB just on the backside of that street and remember when all those "boutique" hotels started to appear. Mostly run by people who bought a big old house really cheap, threw like a million euros at it and turned it into one of these "stylish" or "designer" locations that aim at a certain clientèle. While great attention to detail is given and superficially, they look awesome, I feel that they lack authenticity. I used to stay in old school BnBs when I travelled in the 80s and 90s, and mostly it was a matter of sharing someones home and really getting to know your hosts. It was not about perfection, wifi or rainforest showers😊 And those modern boutique hotels kind of look interchangeable, they re all the same. But they sure attract customers like in your case. Rooms used to cost 30 euros back in the day. I think I remember this particular place charges abou 120 per night? So, guess that's all there is say😢....
