That hotel was a bit too much for my taste. I used to run a very basic BnB just on the backside of that street and remember when all those "boutique" hotels started to appear. Mostly run by people who bought a big old house really cheap, threw like a million euros at it and turned it into one of these "stylish" or "designer" locations that aim at a certain clientèle. While great attention to detail is given and superficially, they look awesome, I feel that they lack authenticity. I used to stay in old school BnBs when I travelled in the 80s and 90s, and mostly it was a matter of sharing someones home and really getting to know your hosts. It was not about perfection, wifi or rainforest showers😊 And those modern boutique hotels kind of look interchangeable, they re all the same. But they sure attract customers like in your case. Rooms used to cost 30 euros back in the day. I think I remember this particular place charges abou 120 per night? So, guess that's all there is say😢....

It's a pity, you didn't get the last post in the gate itself. the sound there is really special and gives you goosebumps. I think I've been there 3 times, since I am from Bruges. Have you done flanders fields, the museum?

As a Belgian and history buf I have never been to Ypres and that makes me feel ashamed a bit. I did spend some time in "De Westhoek" behind the IJzer river the part of Flemish Belgium you are in. I was a drafted conscript soldier long time ago and I had my militairy training in Kokzijde on the coast not that far from ypress. I rushed home on the other side of Flanders every weekend as fast as my legs could carry me so I bypassed Ypress and missed out on a great oportunity. I swore I would never ever return to that part of the country it is time to break that promise to myself.

3:44 Mosquitos are gourmets. They only like certain types of blood..Everybody else they will normally leave alone but if you got their taste of blood they'll invite the whole family to the buffet.
