I'm playing electric bass on this with a local retirement community that has a concert band, both my parents live there and are in the band. I have the music, still this video has been very helpful to play along with in preparation since I won't be able to practice with the band much before the concert later this summer.
I haven't band with a band since high school. I didn't join band the one year I went to college. but I think it would be cool if myself and bunch of other musicians from youtube could all do this arrangement. along with doing just a bunch of the different band arrangements for different songs on youtube.

@@choijiung oh no! My band class is really small because of COVID so we only have one alto sax. He is also our only sax 😭
@@audreyreeves1906 ah oh no 😭 it must be hard being in band during covid, and wow only one alto?? :o when i was in band there were 3 altos and 2 tenors, i was first chair since there wasn’t much... competition for first chair lol
@@choijiung Yeah, my band class rn is only 12 of us because of the way our school is handling everything. Out of that 12 5 of us are percussionists.

Doing this for 7/8 band
As a saxophonist, Michael Brown is a frustrating arranger. He constantly jumps the saxes all over, and specifically the bari sax (look at the first couple of measures. It is like the sax parts are an after-thought. As a player (bari sax player specifically), you need to know your ensemble voice and how you fit into the overall ensemble sound. He sometimes gives you bass parts, but then 4 measures later, it is now the 2nd trombone part, or sometimes it's a mixture of random notes that no one else plays. Very hard to play "ensemble-like" when you keep changing the role of the instrument. The bari sax doesn't always need to follow the tuba, but at least be consistent, please.
I can already tell by listening to the arrangement that not only do the parts jump, but many of the counter melodies or accomplishment parts completely overpower the melodies. It almost seems as if he has eight different instruments playing a part at a time...which is okay obviously but it's just very heavy at all times. Some of the instrument choices also feel a little inappropriate for the part. I'm not an arranger though so I feel that I shouldn't have too much input...but there's my input haha
Honestly I do agree with you about the non-consistency but I think Tenor Sax has more of that problem then Bari Sax (like you I'm a saxophonist more Tenor then Bari though) bc with not just Michael Brown but most other arrangers they can never keep the Tenor to a constant grouping
i totally understand being a bass clarinetist but i tend to like the jumping around, one piece we played the bass starts with the bass line and then starts playing the same as the horns, i guess it’s just a preference
It's so cheesy. I love it.
Why?
As a huge beach boys fan it was pretty easy to tell when there were some changes made. I understand most of them were for obvious reasons in relation to arranging five pieces into one melody; but some of the choices made were just dumb. For example, why didn't the trombones gliss at 46 going into 47, it's very legato in the song. Also at 120, why did you give the melody to the trumpet and not the oboe, this arrangement already has plenty of brass. Also the bassoon and for that matter most of the less than 4 to a part instruments are really under-utilized, I understand that this could be because many bands may not have more "obscure" instruments and the arranger did not wish to lose key parts of the melody, but bassoons should not just play the bassline, no one can hear them and they have a beautiful tenor range as well.
A lot of bands don’t even have bassoons so it makes sense to me. 🤷♀️
