Question - Are you required to do the Pry Bar or Applied Stroke method to check air brake adjustment? 21:47
    Blooper 22:49
The pre-trip inspection determines if the air brake system is safe and that the vehicle can be operated on public highways. The air brake pre-trip inspection can either be done independently or as part of the entire vehicle pre-trip inspection.
For the purposes of a CDL (Commercial Driver’s Licence) in the United States, Canada and other countries you must be knowledgeable in air brakes. The air brake course consists of both a theory or knowledge and practical portion.
The knowledge component of the air brakes is complicated by the fact that the air brake courses that are being taught are 40 years old. And because these air brake courses are 40 years old, everything and the kitchen sink are part-and-parcel of these courses.
In the above video, we do a stand-alone inspection of the vehicle’s air brake components. The first steps of any pre-trip inspection are to chock the wheels, release the parking brakes, and ensure that there is more than 90psi (pounds per square inch) of air pressure in the system. When releasing the parking brakes, put your foot over the brake pedal in the off chance that the wheel chocks do not hold.
The air brake pre-trip can be done in different sequences and that will depend on different driving schools. For this sequence, we inspect the air tanks first, and if it is an older system, you drain the wet tank first to ensure that the one-way check valves are working. If the one-way check valves are working, you know that the dual air brake system is also working.
You then inspect all the components outside the vehicle starting under the hood on the driver’s side. And using the pry bar (free-stroke) method, inspect the adjustment of the air brakes. As well, your mantra for the inspection is: “secure, not damaged, not leaking.” Approximately 75% of the components in the vehicle have either air or fluid in them, so you say that the component is not leaking.
After completing the inspection outside the vehicle and determining that all components are operational, you go in the cab and inspect:
    1) governor (minimum & maximum settings)
    2) low-air warning
    3) spring brakes apply automatically
    4) compressor (build-up)
    5) leak test
The last test for the air brake pre-trip inspection is to apply the parking brakes, remove the wheel chocks, and then do a tug test on the parking brakes and a response test on the service brakes.
The last part of any pre-trip inspection is to fill out the paperwork, which is a legal document. And the pre-trip inspection form must be filled out as part of the driver’s daily tasks.

Outstanding video! Excellent presentation, complete and concise instructions and information. I was confident about my knowledge test, apprehensive about the pre-trip test, happy to say I passed today. After watching the video I had my mantras; "Secure, not damaged, not leaking " and "5 pressure tests, two tug tests. Governor in/out, low air warning, pressure up time, auto spring brakes, leak test. Spring break tug, service break tug." That was an easy way to make sure I didn't miss any tests and made it easy to remember what's related to each. One thing extra I had to do; I had to manually adjust one of the brakes for pushrod travel, they were all good so had to adjust one pushrod out of tolerance then fix and measure by prybar. Thanks for this video, you can bet I'm going to take in all the rest of your videos. Very valuable, very generous of you to share.

Here's the steps for Ontario from a Z course done at a college. Practical test was done on a dump truck.
(Remember to narrate to the examiner what and why it is what you are doing)
    Step 1 Brake Adjustment Test
    *Chock wheels
*Release tractor brakes (push in yellow button)
*Ensure air pressure is between 90 & 100psi
    *Shut engine off
*Measure from brake chamber to center of the clevis pin and not distance
*Apply service brakes using brake stick
*Ensure air pressure is between 90 & 100psi
*Take second measurement & note the difference
*Tell the examiner the distance of travel
*Front brakes are 16 short with an adjustment limit of 1 3/4" adjustment limit (brake type is vehicle specific)
*Rear brakes are 30 short with and adjustment limit of 2 inches (brake type is vehicle specific)
*If any of the brakes exceed their adjustment limit, the truck will be out of service
*Drain the air tanks (wet tank first) looks for moisture, debris and that the valves reseal
*If the valves don't reseal, the truck is out of service
Step 2 Governor Cut In Test (80 psi)
    *Start truck
*Fan Brakes down to 80 psi and watch for the pressure to rise
*If the pressure doesn't rise, the truck is out of service
Step 3 Low Air Warning Test (55 psi)
*Fan the brakes until warning light and buzzer come on and note the pressure
*If the warning light and buzzer don't activate by 55 psi, the truck is out of service
    Step 4 Compressor check test
*With engine revving between 600 and 900 RPM, time how long it takes to build from 85 to 100psi
*If it doesn't build in less the 2 minutes, the truck is out of service
Step 5 Governor cut out test
*Listen for the air dryer to exhaust
*If the governor doesn't cut out between 100 and 135 psi, the truck is out of service
    Step 6 Air Leak Test
    *Shut off engine
*Apply brake pedal and note the brake pressure
    *Listen for audible air leaks
*Time for 1 minute and note air pressure before releasing the brakes
*Cannot lose more then 3 psi in 1 minute or the truck is out of service
Step 7 Spring Brake Application Test
*Apply truck spring brakes (pull yellow button) and hear them apply
*If you don't hear the spring brakes apply, the truck is out of service
*If unsure the spring brakes are holding, you should do a tug test
    Tug Test
    *Remove wheel chocks
*Apply power with the spring brakes applied (yellow button out)
*If brakes don't hold, the truck is out of service
    Speech
If I found any defect during these 7 steps, I would fill out inspection book and report to owner.
If truck is out of service, it is illegal to drive.

    Hi
question : @ min 16:00 you say for the leak test
you say "its holding at 100 lbs per sq inch".
your "brake tractor gauge" the needle shows about 62 psi brake application, no?
why do you say "it's holding at 100 psi "
your video showed primary and secondary tank gauges showed 125 psi
( are we to monitor the "Brake Trctr" gauge dropping , or just the primary AND secondary tanks showing a drop ?)
    Thanks for the video

Hi Rick, Great video! As an Air brake instructor here in Ontario we don't do the 50psi to 90psi test for build-up but only test 85psi to 100psi. just wondering what the differences are in other provinces and states. is there a website with that info?
    Thanks again.
    -Rob

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 лет назад +1

Hi Robert den Broeder - Thank you for your comment. And no, there isn't a website - you have to go through the individual manuals. Some of the other provinces and states are going the 85-100psi in 45s with the engine at flat idle too. I think it's SK--maybe QC too--that's added that the trailer air supply must shut off air to the trailer above 50psi. And then the normal - parking brake applies the emergency brakes between 20 and 45psi. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

I forgot to apply the spring brakes after adjusting the brakes. The spring brakes were release when going from governor cut out to drop the pressure quicker than pumping the brakes. Spring brakes were released when doing air leakage test and then doing an brake adjustment by 2 full brake applications. This was an airbrake practical. I did everything right expect applying the spring brakes. A brake check was not done after brake adjustment, although we talked about prior when the instructor was in passenger seat talking to us.
Does draining the air tanks apply the springs brakes if they were not applied? The truck in neutral and on flat ground and the key was off position.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад

As I stated, if system pressure in the secondary and primary tank is drained between 20 and 45psi, the emergency spring brakes (parking brakes) will apply. The large powerful spring are held in the released position by air pressure. If you drain the air pressure, the spring cannot be held in the release position, will expand, and apply the parking brakes. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Charles S
I'm a retired city bus driver who now occasionally drives rented school buses for church advents in BC. On my city bus doing my pre-trip I was not required to crawl under the bus and check the distance of travel on the push rods. I have also talked to a manager of a school bus system and he indicated because of the auto slack adjusters he does not require his drivers to go under the bus and check rod travel. I have also watched several you tube videos and they don't show anyone going under the bus. Is manually doing a pry bar test a requirement on my routine pre-trip or is it just required when doing a driving test?

Hi 2010Canuck - Thank you for your comment and query. For the purposes of your road test, you will be required to go under the bus and check push rod travel. A automotive creeper is going to work best if you're on pavement or concrete. If you're on dirt it's going to be a little tougher. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Hmm, my state CDL manual says to turn the engine off just before you start the test of the low air pressure warning signal. That would seem to make more sense because the air compressor is trying to replenish the air pressure while the engine is running.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 лет назад

Hi Steven Litvintchouk - Thank you for your comment. And you are correct my friend. On most air brake inspections, after you do the low air warning test, you shut the engine off to do the emergency brake test. Great videos. Question, how much pressure should I apply to the service brake as I’m doing my air leak test? Is light pressure ok?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад

Hi Kenyon Hicks - Thank you for your comment. For the leak test, you are going to have more than 100psi in the system - preferably maximum pressure with the parking brakes released. And you have to make a maximum brake application for 1 minute. A light application will NOT work or pass the requirements for a road test. What class of license are your working toward? What happens if you do a pre trip and air
Compressor ..air brake test passes in pre trip but half way through the day the air compressor becomes faulty? Would a driver get a ticket for a major defect or can this be fought in court ? Thanks

One thing I've always wondered, is the scale on these gauges. Is it really enough to differentiate a 3, 4, 6 psi drop? I mean, the increments on the gauge are 25 psi

jack kelley - great question. You’re right, it’s not. But we guesstimate as best as we can to satisfy the authorities for the purposes of the test. All the best, Cheers Rick

I have a question.... I have a 1984 Tandem grain truck that I purchased about a year ago, It has airbrakes... It has 2 tanks at the rear that have a drain valve each, and one tank under the cab by the right side fuel tank... The one by the fuel tank has 2 drain valves on it... I never seem to get any air out of the one. I've only ever got a little bit of water and some gunky stuff... Is that just the wet tank? The other valve works fine I get lots of air when I open it... The brakes and everything all seem to work just fine, and when i bought it I had to get an inspection done and nothing was said about it so I'm assuming it's normal.. Am I right to assume that or should I get it checked out? I would thank you kindly if you could answer my question... Thanks...

Hi TheFarmerfitz - Thank you for your comment. Usually when an air tank as two drain valves, it is 2 tanks created by a bulkhead. The way to find your wet tank is to pump to full pressure. Take note of the pressure on the gauges and then go out and drain each tank - one at a time. The tank that doesn't drop the needles is your wet tank because it doesn't have a pressure gauge. There is a possibility that the tank by the fuel was replaced and the person who did it didn't realized that it was 2 tanks, rather than one. That's only one possibility. The only other possibility is an emergency tank in the event of break down, but I've never encountered one of those. If you determine which tank is the wet tank, that might alleviate some of the mystery. However, if you have 3 tanks that are functioning, then your system--as you stated--should be working fine. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best for the holidays, Cheers Rick

Thanks for the reply... The one by the fuel tank as I said has 2 drain valves... is it possible that there is 2 compartments in one tank... On that tank, when I turn the tap on the rear drain valve I get the usual blast of air, and usually some moisture... The other one I have only ever had a little dribble of water but no air at all..... The other two tanks I do the same and I get the usual blast of air with a bit of moisture(depending on how long it's been since draining).... It's probably like you said...

You did a great job. But remember to tell the people who’s watching the first thing you do is when you get in the cab is to put on your seatbelt!! Because it’s an automatic failure if you don’t have it on when you do your in cab air brake test. Other than that the great job.
