There are 6 basic components on an air brake equipped vehicle:
1) compressor;
2) governor;
3) air tanks;
4) air lines;
5) brake pedal;
6) foundation brakes.
The air compressor on an air brake equipped vehicle is exactly the same as an air compressor you would find in a garage. The only difference is that an air compressor on an air brake equipped vehicle runs the entire time the motor is running; therefore, it is controlled by the governor.
The governor controls the maximum and minimum setting of the air compressor because the air compressor is capable of pumping up to 500psi (pounds per square inch). The governor must return the air compressor to the load or cut-in phase by a minimum of 80psi. And it must return the air compressor to the cut-out or unload phase by a maximum pressure of 135psi.
All air brake systems are equipped with a safety valve, which blows off excess pressure at 150psi. You will know it is the safety valve because it makes a sound like a machine gun.
The air tanks or reservoirs store compressed air.
As well, the air tanks are the first fail-safe of the air brake system because these store enough compressed air for 10-12 full service brake applications.
The air lines direct compressed air through the air brake system. The air lines are not coloured coded except the service and supply lines that connect the semi-trailer to the tractor or truck.
The brake pedal applies the service brakes, which are the brakes that bring the vehicle to a stop while it's going up and down the road.
And the foundation brakes are the components of the air brake system that are actually responsible for bringing the vehicle to a stop:
• brake chambers
• push rod
• slack adjuster
• 'S' cam
• brake shoes (pads)
• brake drum
• rotor
• callipers
And the foundation brakes can be any of the following; however, drum and disc brakes are most common on today's vehicles:
• drum ('S' cam) brakes
• disc brakes
• wedge brakes
• CamLaster brakes
• air-over-hydraulic brakes
The foundation brakes-in this day & age-will be 2 basic types: drum or disc brakes. Foundation brakes also consist of air-over-hydraulic and wedge brakes - you will need to know the latter for the purposes of the air brake knowledge test.
Good luck on your road test!

I drive a logging truck and its important to get back to basics every once in a while because memory fades with time and your video does a good job of that.
Hi row gun - thank you for your comment and praise. It is nice to see drivers pursuing their own professional development; it dispels the myth that truck drivers are dullards. All the best, Cheers Rick
Big facts.
It does fade but the eventually if you constantly do it, it will be nearly impossible to forget.
It seems that trucking is one of those careers which requires a fairly decent understanding of mechanics in addition to driving.
Hi Screw Hillary - Thank you for your comment. And yes, you need a basic understanding to ensure that the unit is working correctly and not a danger to the driving public. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
That's what I was thinking too. Sometimes I feel like I'm studying to be a mechanic looking at all this stuff.

What about pilots?
Currently in school for heavy duty mechanics, just getting into air systems and also did my first brake job inspection plus hub seal today but still don’t understand how it all works but you explained this a lot better than my teacher could, I understand the system a bit better now so thanks for your help 👍🏼

So helpful to see a diagram of the system. It was hard to study when I couldn't apply what I was learning in a practical way. thanks for the explanation and the questions after the explanation.

Thank you for doing this. I am retired from driving. I kept my CDL because I bought a Restoring project. A 71 SeaGrave Fire Pumper.
I had a Leak in one of my Tanks. From the stuff you teach, I could tell there was something wrong. Limped Fire Rig to my shop. Showed them right were problem was. And told them do repairs, plus full DOT inspection, of Air brake system. This is in part thanks to listening to great instructors like you. So I knew what to look for in Air brake system. I wanted the Fire Rig to let Kids enjoy. Get in cab. It has the opposite type of release for AirBrakes. You pull out nob, for DRIVING. Yes it's not what I'm use too.

I know this was 5 years ago but thank you for explaining all of this. I understand the air brakes enough, it was very helpful to see it though because I'm more of a visual learner. And you explained some of the things like the governor better than I did in my own head. Tu tu tu tu tu tu machina gun🤣🤣
In your video you never explain the purpose of a air dryer I have a problem with a safety valve that is attached to an air dryer that sound like a machine gun before it purges The system is on a freightliner chassis and it as 20000 miles on the chassis and air system the governor ,safety valve ,filter dryer filter is new. The purge valve also is new. They problem is the system can not reach a 125 435 PSI at 12:00 rpm so it continues to release air with safety valve the purge system can not work. The purge system will work once you let off of the throttle and go back to 700 rpm the system worked great once you accelerate the system has begin to load the air tanks it does it again the same problem allowing air not to build to a 130 PSI.
Here is the video for the air dryer my friend; ruclips.net/video/yBi-6eUch0w/видео.html The safety valves on the system are located on the air tanks. I believe you're talking about the purge valve on the air dryer. I would guess that you either have a problem with the purge valve on the air dryer, or something is wrong with the governor. All the best, Cheers Rick

Smart Drive Test actually I do have a question. I have to take a CDL test in OK for a class A. I have to take it in a Ford F450 and 40 foot horse trailer. Do you have any videos that will help with pre trip exam portion?
Hi thank you for the information this is very helpful, you know what I cannot find is information on the inner workings of a DAs Disc or rotor brake system it would be great if you could make one that explains all the functions inside a disc brake system
