I've been following both you & Dar Cy @Purposeful Pantry for quite awhile. Darcy says to condition dehydrated foods for 5 days, shaking the jar st least once daily & looking for moisture. My favorite dehydrated food from frozen is broccoli. I toss a handful into pasta when I'm cookingit. It is delicious with MSc n cheese. I usually have a couple gallon jars of dehydrated broccoli on hand. I used it when I made broccoli cheddar cheese soup & it was delicious.
Dehydrating frozen fruits and veggies is sooo easy! They're already cut, washed, and blanched and ready to go. I just open the package and dump them onto the trays frozen. They thaw pretty quickly in the dehydrator. I recently tried doing stir fry veggies. They turned out great! Just avoid the mixes with baby corn. The baby corn cobs take forever to dry and they don't rehydrate nicely at all. They get rubbery, yet mushy. Yuck! TIP- if you're dehydrating frozen fruits like strawberries that release a lot of juice when they thaw, put them on the bottom so they don't drip on other foods, and put a fruit roll tray in the very bottom to catch all the drips.
Thank you so much for these tips! Very useful. Did any of your stirfry mixes include water chestnuts? Wondering how those dehydrate and then rehydrate.
@@joylouise5417 Yes they did. I was surprised at how well they rehydrated. They still have some of that satisfying crunch. They're more like canned water chestnuts than frozen ones.
Would love homemade dog snacks recipes. My Isle of Imal Terrier "Rusty" thinks he is to get a treat every time he goes out to do his business and comes running back in like a bullet to get a treat. He is a very spoiled rescue dog that is loved so much. Thank you for all your wonderful videos. You have taught me so much.
You can grind dehydrated corn into a coarse meal, or polenta. I find corn is chewy when rehydrated. I’ll bet hush puppies made with this meal might be really good.
our dogs have always loved green beans , even right out of the can. apples, bananas carrots softened. these are our dog snacks instead of buying dog biscuits.
QUESTION: Hello Mary, I have a question for you, I dehydrated a mix of frozen vegetables consisting of carrots, broccoli and cauliflower, before sealing the jar I wanted to make sure no moisture was evident, does this mix stink? I don't like the smell of broccoli anyway, but I want to make sure something did not go wrong. Also, they are not hard but my cosori dehydrator their little book states the texture is leathery, is this your experience? I kept dehydrating them for the hardness talking about 24 hours, did they get over dehydrated by chance and why they don't have a pleasant smell? The cauliflower they turned brownish.
I have been dehydrating for 6 years running now. The pantry space it saves is incredible. I puréed a 35 pound blue Hubbard squash and made chips I throw into soups, sauces, stews. I was able to fit that entire 35 pound squash into 1 quart jar. I do the same with pumpkin and other squashes.
@@iylalacoste3463 not certain what you are asking as dehydrated means withdrawing all the water. To use the puréed chips i rehydrate sometimes and other times I will just add the chips directly to whatever wet sauce I am in the process of making. Hope this answers your intended question. 😀
@@sierraechopnw4228 yes it did, thank you! I had watched another video that said you can’t just throw dehydrated food into soups because it won’t rehydrate properly but you proved that wrong!
@@iylalacoste3463 I have only done this with dehydrated pureed chips i make. I do rehydrate other things prior to adding to soups/stews. The chips are so thin they easily dissolve in a hot soups. I even throw a handful in spaghetti sauce and chilis to add extra nutrients…just enough to not change the flavor. 🙂 i have added dehydrated broccoli or cauliflower to cheese based soups where I am eventually using my immersion blender then to puree it all.
When you have a quart jar of dehydrated veggies, what measurement of dry equates to rehydrated/cooked? I love your gentle spirit and informative videos
Hi Kimberly, Great question! It varies slightly but if you rehydrate 1 cup of dehydrated vegetables, it will usually yield about 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 cups rehydrated veggies. Love, Mary
Another way to use dehydrated vegetables is to grind them to a powder in a blender. I did that with tomatoes then rehydrated the powder to the consistency of tomato sauce or paste depending on what I needed. My son and daughter-in-love dehydrate and grind vegetables and herbs then mix into sour cream or yogurt to make amazing dips of whatever flavors you like. But using frozen vegetables is completely new to me and I love the idea. My days of extreme vegetable chopping are over. Thanks!
@@florencetlp It worked really well especially since the tomatoes were free. I was grocery shopping one day when the produce manager asked if I wanted some tomatoes and red bell peppers he was boxing up to discard. My mamma didn’t raise any dummies so I said yes! and thanked him profusely. Best deal ever.
@@tgardenchicken1780 I feel I’m the one who hit the jackpot. She’s the perfect mate for my son and had been such a blessing to our family. Plus they gave me my only grandchild. 😀
I actually learned this method using frozen veggies on RedRose‘s YT channel but when you mentioned not discarding the water, I had to laugh because I do this too! (What’s that saying again… Great minds think alike? 😂) I’ve been doing the same thing when heating up vegetables and even saving pasta water. I will keep and freeze it for later. Just in case there’s no potable water, at least I have that lol!
Blanch and dehydrate sweet potatoes…doggies love it. I also thin slice frozen chicken breasts with just a tiny bit of soy sauce ( put the sliced chicken in a ziplock bag & add a bit of soy sauce & mix) then just dehydrate. Great doggie treats that you can eat as well or use in soups, whatever.
You can prevent the corn from darkening by lowering the temperature on your dehydrator a little. It's the heat caramelizing the sugars that causes it to darken. It will take a little longer to dehydrate though.
You can also put an empty tray or two underneath the corn. I put the other vegetables on the bottom trays. The corn or corn mixes on the TOP. Also do not do frozen mushrooms!!! What a NASTY mess I ended up with!!!🥺😱😪
mary i was trying to think of a way to use veggies dry or frzn.... to someone that HATES cooked veggies. he will eat raw.. but not steamed or cooked in ANYTHING... BIG TEXTURE PROBLEM.. i GUESS that maybe......growing up his fam may have cooked everything to death aka mush.... im guessing... i did find a way to get garden chunk speg sauce into him....blending it and adding more spices . so im thinking.... taking dehydrated... and throwing that in a blender and making it into a pwder. then making a stew/ soup/cassarole..with chucks of meats... with a gravy base or cheese pasta. base and putting the pwdr into it. so at least.... he does get his veggies .... without knowing it...;];];] any other ideas on how to work around this problem??????
I absolutely love this channel! You go over each step so well...I'm actually dehydrating a lot right now from the garden...wonderful information for those first-timers, too! Thank you for all you do, it is quite the ministry! Great channel and wonderful information! Thank you! :) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
I love Darcy's channel. I also started with dehydrated frozen veggies. I didn't rinse them or thaw them before putting them in. Was so easy. Celery was another great one as I never end up using it all before it goes bad. Now, I have a good stock for the future and kept the trimmings for future bone broth. I love dehydrating because it's passive work. After you slice it all up or in this case, pour the bag out, the machine does the rest. I have grape tomatoes and celery in my dehydrator now. Carrots are next. Darcy does show how to condition your food before storing.
I go camping every chance I get and I dehydrate nearly everything for space saving and saving on weight, including chicken both raw and cooked. I make some lovely meals that I start soaking to rehydrate while we go on an adventure, hike or swim & then when back at camp it doesn’t take long to whip thing up into a lovely meal.
Hi from the UK. Thank you for y,our videos they are very helpful as dehydration is not common proctice ihere. With food and energy prices rocketing I started buying frozen veg to add to my stores when covid hit. One HUGE suggestion I have to offer here (from experience) is once the veg is defrosted blot them GENTLY using paper towels or cloth.before putting them in the dehydrator. This removes an incredible amount of water and so saves time and energy . This works especially well with frozen sliced mushrooms. it cut dehydration time by nearly 50%. Many thanks again.
Thank you for this. I have a dehydrator but I've never used it. I think I'll try mixed vegetables for my first go. Mary, you are such a blessing to this world. God bless!
Hi Mary I'm definitely interested in doggy snacks. We also have a large dog (Angel) who loves string beans. All my best to you and your family!! Hugs from granny!
Hi Mary, I used my Hamilton beach dehydrator for the first time last night for a bag of frozen mixed vegetables and frozen corn. I’m so pleased. Then this morning I found your video on frozen veggies. Enjoy your videos and been watching since 2020. God Bless and have a wonderful day.
I love that book, The Ultimate Dehydrator Cookbook. Darcy is also fantastic. Great tips in here. Thank you so much! Green peas do not rehydrate well for me so I will definitely try the way you did Lima beans and corn. As for storage, I seal in half gallon jars or Mylar bags but I also keep a pint jar of the commonly used ones on a kitchen shelf for quick uses. That prevents opening the large jars as often. I do use the moisture retardant packs in my dehydrated goods as it is very humid here and they are extremely beneficial. Very helpful video, sweet friend.
Thank you so much for this video. I have been dehydrating the past few months but really didn’t know how the rehydration would really turn out. You answered so many questions for me. I will have a lot more confidence dehydrating and rehydrating my food now. You’re so awesome. My husband enjoys your videos too - he doesn’t really cooks but feels like he learns something when he listens with me.
So excited about this Mary! I have so many frozen veggies, so will definitely be dehydrating them! Would love to go over homemade pet treats (with sourdough starter?) Baby carrots can be a very good treat for dogs, my Lab loves them and sugar free popsicles, lol
So happy you did this with FROZEN vegs! I've got a 5# bag from the food shelf taking up too much freezer space, and I'm afraid of freezer burn, tbh. I use the small bags a lot, but that big bag came in a box that I had no choice over.
Can you tell me where to get the Foodsaver Jar Sealers? I see it on their website but not with the charging base. Can you just use it with the foodsaver itself? Love your videos.
That was wonderful, Mary. I loved that you rehydrated/cooked some so we could see how they turned out. Hard to imagine how ‘normal’ they appear when you’re looking at them in their dry, hard, shriveled form 🤣
Hi Mary! I can’t wait to get my own dehydrator to make backpacking meals myself. In the meantime, all I have is an oven. Would you be willing to do a tutorial on dehydrating in the oven? I’ve also heard one can make beef jerky in the oven as well. Love from Tyler, Tx. 😊
I got an electric dehydrator and did a load of frozen vegetables, but the temp kept varying too much so I sent it back. Now I just dehydrate during the winter on racks next to my wood stove. It works a charm. Lots of veggies for very little money or time and no extra electric bill - especially with our electric rates having tripled here.
Also, I use a brake bleeder to remove air from my jars, with a food saver attachment hose. Only because my food saver is older and still serviceable, and didn't come with the attachment you use. :)
Hi Brenda, in order to use O2 absorbers, you need to be able to guarantee that you’re dehydrated food contains less than 10% moisture. That can be difficult to guarantee was home dehydrated foods. Love, Mary
Thank you Mary. Dehydrating food is something I little about but was looking for some guidance, and here you are. I love vegetables but have limited freezer space. Are there vegetables you do not recommend dehydrating? Canning and dehydrating are things I know little about so you have been a blessing to me. Thanks again.
You should really check out Darcy's channel The Purposeful Pantry. Her main focus is dehydrated foods and she has a wealth of information for you. Happy Dehydrating!
Oh Mary! Wow, what a fantastic video. Thank you so much.. You have me so excited to try this. You have completely eliminated any fears I had about this process.
I heard any bread products are not good for dogs goes to alcohol. I always gave mine raw carrots. Does that little electronic thing work for all food saver machines? Thank you I never thought of dehydrating frozen vegetables. A great idea.
Thank you so much for this video, Mary. You answered so many questions for us. We are going to increase the amount we dehydrate going forward. Have a blessed Sunday.
Hi Mary, I love your channel. 🌷. I’m not sure that your frozen mix is particularly Mexican. “Guarnición” means “side dish” in Spanish, so it can be a variety of foods. In Argentina we use a similar mix of corn, peas, chopped carrots, potatoes and eggs mixed with mayonnaise and served cold which we call “Russian Salad” - I doubt it is particularly Russian, but it’s a popular way of encouraging kids to eat veggies. 😘
Hello Mary, My first time to bake two loaves of NO KNEAD Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread by using Sprouted Whole Wheat Spelt Flour. I followed your recipe and baked for 30 minutes instead of 40 min. Very delicious, Mary. I continue to make organic Sauerkraut and even share it with my neighbors and loved it. Fermentation of cherry, Roma and large tomatoes with Basil has been rewarding. Thank you very much Mary . Please take care and be safe always and kind regards to your family.
Loved this. Please do one on dehydrating tomatoes. I had a project and they got moldy, so not sur if the pieces were too big, temp too low, etc. I did it in a machine for like 16hrs so I thought that was enough. Thanks and God bless
Your videos are all incredible, Mary. Thanks for being so faithful to try to help us. You have so much information, it's hard to know where to start. Should I stop buying canned veggies and start going to dehydrated instead?
I have read you need to condition dehydrated food for 10 days to check for moisture? Thank you for this most informative video, especially your testing on how to rehydrate!
Does anyone know if the vitamin content of the frozen dehydrated vegetables is preserved, especially the vitamin C? I haven't heard of vitamin C surviving at all in dehydrated vegetables.
Mary, I am new to dehydrating. I have happily and successfully dehydrated some herbs and potatoes. I just wanted to say that I hung onto your every word. This is an excellent video especially for us beginners. Thank you for giving us all the details from dehydrating to rehydrating and storage. I particularly appreciate your recommendations for the best reference and cookbooks. You deserve an A+! Patricia
@@MarysNest Thank you 😊🤗 I do too;) I just started canning for the first time and I just thought wow I bet tht would be good for canning? Not knowing a lot about canning;) hope someone can answer this for us;)
Mary, Im worried about you. Austin, Left “leadership” has CUT police budget $150 million! I hope at least your taxpayers will get a BIG reduction in their taxes! Safety to you.
It appeared most of your vegetables are "steamable"...have those been blanched before freezing? If so, cooking & rehydrating them might be different...? I have been dehydrating for several years & enjoy experimenting with different foods...loved watermelon & cantaloupe!!
Hi Mary, I have followed you for a couple months, I loved how you teaching. I will loved to learn how to make dogs treats, I have a mix of German shepherd and husky, and oh boy she’s really picky with food and is driving me crazy, looking for a solution not just to feeding her but healthy as well. Blessings
I live at the base of Hill Country of Texas as well. Out of 127 Aldi's in Texas I do not see even one remotely close to me. Uhg! Anyway, I have a lot of catching up to do on your teachings. Ready, set, learn! 👍
Frozen! Brilliant. That saves so much time. Thanks for the demo. Im watching because I rescue guinea pigs and they love dried veggies, but the little pet bags are so expensive. And the bulk bags that are usually advertised as soup blends always contain onions, which is very very bad for guinea pigs. They should never have onion. Zero. With your example hopefully I can produce something easily that the little ones will love.
I have some bags frozen to dehydrate in my oven.. My Question is: when adding to soup, may I add this directly into the broth? I noted how she is pouring hot water over it as a side dish. I was wanting mine more for dry soup mixes to gift to family if I can find a recipe to follow and do so :) Thanks!
I dehydrate uncooked sweet potatoes cut into thin slices. My dog likes them now after put this nose up a few times. He likes Greenies. Now he loves them, as well as I do when I want something crunchy.
I add dehydrated vegetables to my instant pot when I do millet or Brown rice. I just throw in About a quarter of a cup to a cup of rice and put about a quarter of a cup more extra broth and it turns out great.. I don't use corn though. Just green beans carrots peas broccoli cauliflower
Darcy says that if you know you are going to use some dried veggies the next day, put the amount you need in a jar with a bunch of water and let it soak overnight in your fridge. by time you need it, it should be ready. Haven't tried that, but it is an option. And yes, would love some dog treat recipes.
I always cook my frozen vegetables before using them. They never seem like they've been cooked enough just heating them up. I don't do that with cauliflower or broccoli though as they would be mush. I am a follower of The Purposeful Panty and have dehydrated mixed vegetables and if not putting them in soup or stews I always cook them just like I would the frozen veggies. I never used the lid so that is a great tip to know. Thanks Mary! I'm so glad I found your channel.
Hello I love your Chanel I have learned so much my question to you what dehydrator should I buy what would you recommend so many in the market and loss every I try to buy one.

I cant print this. Can I get this emailed??
I've been following both you & Dar Cy @Purposeful Pantry for quite awhile. Darcy says to condition dehydrated foods for 5 days, shaking the jar st least once daily & looking for moisture.
My favorite dehydrated food from frozen is broccoli. I toss a handful into pasta when I'm cookingit. It is delicious with MSc n cheese. I usually have a couple gallon jars of dehydrated broccoli on hand. I used it when I made broccoli cheddar cheese soup & it was delicious.
I was afraid to do broccoli! I wasn't sure if it would rehydrate well. Thanks for your knowledge!
@@JulieDobbins.76 Thank you SO much!
Great tip, thanks!
What if you do not have a dehydrator? Able to do it in oven?
Hi Mary ❤ thank you Mary you are wonderful💖 shalom❤
Would love homemade dog snacks recipes. My Isle of Imal Terrier "Rusty" thinks he is to get a treat every time he goes out to do his business and comes running back in like a bullet to get a treat. He is a very spoiled rescue dog that is loved so much. Thank you for all your wonderful videos. You have taught me so much.
You can grind dehydrated corn into a coarse meal, or polenta. I find corn is chewy when rehydrated. I’ll bet hush puppies made with this meal might be really good.
our dogs have always loved green beans , even right out of the can. apples, bananas carrots softened. these are our dog snacks instead of buying dog biscuits.
what is the lovely statue behind you to your left?....beautiful...
“Riggem-a-roll”, that’s something I say too. My 10 year old son is like, “What does that mean?”
😂😂😂
I have been dehydrating for 6 years running now. The pantry space it saves is incredible. I puréed a 35 pound blue Hubbard squash and made chips I throw into soups, sauces, stews. I was able to fit that entire 35 pound squash into 1 quart jar. I do the same with pumpkin and other squashes.
Do you rehydrate it first?
Thanks!
That's a good idea!

You make a difference
Yes, please! Share more doggie snacks or food recipes. Thank you Miss Mary for sharing this dehydrator video!
Love, PJ 🙏 ❤️
Blanch and dehydrate sweet potatoes…doggies love it. I also thin slice frozen chicken breasts with just a tiny bit of soy sauce ( put the sliced chicken in a ziplock bag & add a bit of soy sauce & mix) then just dehydrate. Great doggie treats that you can eat as well or use in soups, whatever.
@@womensarmycorpsveteran2904 hey thanks! Great ideas...I appreciate your time ⏲️ 👍
You can prevent the corn from darkening by lowering the temperature on your dehydrator a little. It's the heat caramelizing the sugars that causes it to darken. It will take a little longer to dehydrate though.
Hi Julie, Great tip! Love, Mary ❤️🤗❤️
Thank you!
You can also put an empty tray or two underneath the corn.
I put the other vegetables on the bottom trays. The corn or corn mixes on the TOP.
Also do not do frozen mushrooms!!! What a NASTY mess I ended up with!!!🥺😱😪
Good to know! Thank you 😊

Yes! Dog snack video please.
Thank you for bringing me so much joy in learning how to cook nutritious meals for my family and I. So grateful for you.
Hi Mary, this is a great thing to do to frozen vegetables before they get freezer burn. I've saved many a bag of vegetables by dehydrating them.
Oh Teresa! Thank you so much for sharing this with me. Glad the video helped a love, Mary ❤️🤗❤️
So excited about this Mary! I have so many frozen veggies, so will definitely be dehydrating them! Would love to go over homemade pet treats (with sourdough starter?) Baby carrots can be a very good treat for dogs, my Lab loves them and sugar free popsicles, lol
Great content, as usual Mary, my only concern is for folks not having enough clean water to use upon SHTF. 😘
Homemade dog snacks would be awesome, Mary!
And thank you for this video, was very timely for me, as I just got a new dehydrator!!
So happy you did this with FROZEN vegs! I've got a 5# bag from the food shelf taking up too much freezer space, and I'm afraid of freezer burn, tbh. I use the small bags a lot, but that big bag came in a box that I had no choice over.
When dehydrating vegetables and fruits…how much of the nutrients would be lost?
Darcy at the purposeful pantry is another great resource on canning and dehydrating and she's just released a new book.
Can you tell me where to get the Foodsaver Jar Sealers? I see it on their website but not with the charging base. Can you just use it with the foodsaver itself? Love your videos.
Mary thank you so much for your videos. You give us the information we can all utilize. Blessings to you and your family! Cindy
That was wonderful, Mary. I loved that you rehydrated/cooked some so we could see how they turned out. Hard to imagine how ‘normal’ they appear when you’re looking at them in their dry, hard, shriveled form 🤣
IM SOLD! I've been on the fence about rehydration...the space saving is INCREDIBLE. THANKS SO MUCH MARY! Hugs 2 everyone 🤗 ❤
and the energy saving too
PS I tried giving my sweet senior black Lab green beans. She spit them out and gave me a very dark look. 😅
Van you vaccum seal these veggies for long term storage? Would I need O2 absorbers?
Hi Brenda, in order to use O2 absorbers, you need to be able to guarantee that you’re dehydrated food contains less than 10% moisture. That can be difficult to guarantee was home dehydrated foods. Love, Mary
Awesome video Mary! I’ve got lots of frozen vegetables that are taking up a lot of freezer space. Thank you 😊
Add the water to bone in broth lol
So happy to hear this! ❤️🤗❤️
Hello Mary, My first time to bake two loaves of NO KNEAD Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread by
using Sprouted Whole Wheat Spelt Flour. I followed your recipe and baked for 30 minutes
instead of 40 min. Very delicious, Mary. I continue to make organic Sauerkraut and even share it
with my neighbors and loved it. Fermentation of cherry, Roma and large tomatoes with Basil has
been rewarding.
Sweet Mary, Ebay claims to have that beautiful kettle. BTW my Grandmother taught me to put a spoon in glass cups when pouring in boiling water.😄

Lost my first response but need to report I’m looking forward to doing this. They will Tavel easier too. I’ve got room and jars. Thanks.

It appeared most of your vegetables are "steamable"...have those been blanched before freezing? If so, cooking & rehydrating them might be different...? I have been dehydrating for several years & enjoy experimenting with different foods...loved watermelon & cantaloupe!!
Hi Mary,
I have followed you for a couple months, I loved how you teaching.

My doggie loves dried sweet potatoes! Yes please add more for doggo, thanks Mary!

I love dehydrating frozen onions. So much less smelly. (Thanks to Darcy for mentioning frozen veggies)
Hi Mary, can you dehydrate food in your kitchen oven if you don’t have a dehydrator
I dehydrate uncooked sweet potatoes cut into thin slices. My dog likes them now after put this nose up a few times. He likes
Greenies. Now he loves them, as well as I do when I want something crunchy.
Tea kettle it's just a electric JUG🤔 was the corn all the same brand.Darcy said for the first 5 days shake the bottles twice a day🤔
Tqvm. Will dried pea, beans and corns be the same as dehydrating frozen pea, beans and corns?
Yes beans frozen even your dog will love and yogurt and 100 % pure pumpkin plus peanut butter
Healthy dog snacks please! Oh, and my vet says only frozen beans, due to salt in cans for dogs. Mine ls also a little chunk!
