Hi Mary in the Dominican Republic, my husband taught me that because of poverty many people would use 1 small can tomato paste mix it with three o cans of water.along with some olive oil fresh garlic, and onions, and ME being Puerto Rican I would add some oregano as well and you can make the best tasting spaghetti sauce you have ever tasted, and no one would ever know you made it in a pinch from your emergency supply. 😊
As a very poor college student I would go to the cafeteria, grab a cup of hot water and add 2-3 packets of ketchup, salt, pepper and hot sauce - tomato soup, $0.00 cost. The staff evidently felt sorry for me because after a while they would automatically hand me a couple packets of crackers too. Very appreciated their sweet gesture. While tomato soup may not be my first choice these days, at least I know I wouldn’t go hungry 😁
I'm on a self induced No Shop October. I can't buy anything till Nov 10th. Have to pay property tax. Thanks for helping me prep in the past to get thru this.
I love your comment! Since lockdown, I've been stocking up too. It's really helped so much! Hubby lost his 20 year position that allowed us to live very nicely. It was shocking to learn that there weren't positions paying what he had been making. Basically, we had to start over and it felt like we were teenagers, just leaving the nest (financially). Learning to do all of this was a game changer to the point that I'm able to help our adult children and their babies. It's so important, I think, to keep helping each other.
Important at times to acknowledge the limitations we individually have. Honor yourself. Thanks for sharing because many of us are in a similar boat, and need to step up to making sacrifices. Thanks for sharing honesty.
I am a faithful Aldi shopper. I have been shopping at Aldi for 40 years coming from Germany, when I go grocery shopping I go to Aldi first and then what I can’t get at Aldi I go to Kroger. I make Hobo Beans with the canned beans and a little ground beef. Season with cumino, some red pepper flakes, garlic and we eat that with crusty bread. Soooo good and cheap meal.
In my younger days I cooked sliced apples with onions, oil, and paprika. I didn't have enough to add a typical protein such as pork chops. Cornbread with canned beans and some shredded cheese was an evening meal.
I'm 58 and that's our go to camping breakfast! The kids (grown now) still want me to make them! They really are good. I would remind people that canned potatoes never brown when you fry them up. 😅 I used to try. 😂
Good tips. I use single serve applesauce to replace oil in muffins and you can cut back on sugar since the applesauce is sweet. Since I'm single a small container works better for me and doesn't go bad. I then use the cups to plant seeds.
I like the Blessing Box idea; I've been doing those for about 3 years. For pasta I look for the words, 'product of Italy' (except Barilla which states it is 'enriched') because Italy's wheat is different than US-grown wheat in that it has a lower glycemic index. Thank you for the informative video. My motto for grocery day is, "Aldis first!".
You’re too funny! ❤ You never need to apologize for the crunching of the bags! I love the fact that you don’t have annoying music in the background of your videos. Enjoying the real sounds of life is much more pleasant!
I buy canned salmon from Audi to make salmon cakes. Once , a long time ago, I followed a recipe to make salmon croquettes and it was served with creamed peas. My husband now requires creamed peas with his salmon patties ( easier). So each month I pick up a couple cans of salmon and a couple cans of peas.
I love peas!! Lol and i grew up on salmon croquettes 🤤 mom made them with mac and cheese and green beans for dinner; auntie made them with eggs and rice for breakfast.. amazing both ways but i think i need to try them your way now 🙏🏾 can you tell me how you cream your peas? Lol
I remember when Aldi first opened where I live and people were sort of snobbish and felt it was beneath them to shop there. Aldi has a much better selection and is consistently lower in price than any other grocery store including Walmart. Now there are lots of those people shopping there. You do what you have to to feed your family. Thanks for the review.
I started shopping at Aldi when I became a stay at home Mom so I could afford to be home. One of my best friends thought Aldi was for poor people and refused to shop there. Many years later, she ended up marrying my brother and now she is always raving about the delicious options. So funny 🤣
gosh, I remember when Aldi first opened in Ireland, you would see ladies in there with hoodies on and heads down, different now, Mercedes, BMW etc in the carpark now, because they offer great value for money.
I’m a dedicated Aldi first shopper, but I have learned to price check against the sale circular of our local markets. Sometimes things like pasta, beans, canned tomatoes are less when on sale. I often would have to go to the local supermarket anyway for more produce varieties and brand items.
Long back(25years), we had a 3 month period of having no money for groceries. We did have a stash of dry beans. i cooked beans in all kinds of ways, with some dried or tinned veg. i used to bulk buy even in those days. none of us got sick in that period, although it was flu season! but it did make our children never want to see a bean again. They did start eating beans again in time. But, yes, very nutritious. Thank you, Mary, for just reminding us why it is good to sock up when you are able
I was raised in the soutb. Everyone was poor. Many large families like mine(8 kids). We a te a variety of beans, taters, cabbage. Cornbread, biscuits, apples. Alway🎉s h a d f t ied chicken or potroast on sundays. We loved beans!!! I would rather have pinto beans, coleslaw cornbread than a steak dinner!!!
Thank you Mary. I love when you show us the bargains at Auldi's. I never thought of buying sliced potatoes in a can. My 93 year old Mom loves her mashed potatoes and my body type doesn't care for them. This is an easy way to fix her what she loves without all of the work. Also, I appreciate that Auldi's uses such limited ingredients in their food.
My mother would slice spam, bread it with flour/egg/crushed soda crackers. She fried it up like a breaded meat patty served it with mashed potatoes and a veggie.
Potatoes! Being a single mother I have learned to ALWAYS keep canned potatoes in my pantry. They can be better than people realize. Excellent video Pantry stockup time for country living - you never know when you get wintered in and for how long. I hope everyone listens and learns from this information you provided
Before the Rona craziness, Aldi mushrooms were 37¢ per can. I put several flats of cans in my pantry. It hurts a bit each time i use one, knowing the replacement cost is over a dollar. Whenever I'm at Aldi, I put a couple cans of some kind of beans in the cart. (White/Navy beans or black beans are both great for stretching any ground beef recipe.) I also bought several flats of Stokley canned green beans and corn at Joe Vs, which is the budget little brother of HEB. My SIL gifted me flats of other canned beans via Amazon. I got 36 family size baked beans a while back at a Dollar General on one of their periodic penny clearance sales.
I did the same with Welch's natural jams. They were about a dollar each back then. I'm down to 4 jars left and when I went to grab a couple more they are almost $3 each now. 😢
I’m still stunned at the price increase of those little cans of mushrooms. I can only guess that they lost a vendor of something similar. They’re more than double. I have noticed that when they discontinue an item the replacement is often much more expensive.
@@TheFamilyVonPappwith some items I figured out that what had happened was that I had stocked up on sale a couple of years prior, then I’m looking to replace at full price. Me stocking up on decaf tea told the story. I’d usually buy about a dozen boxes during sale, but the regular price has become almost prohibitively expensive.
@@teresahendley5659 yes, but aldi's is definitely nothing to brag on.. it has sold out too. Plus, their produce has a lesser shelf life. So, actually, you pay for what you get.
My personal favorite is "spam and taters" diced spam, a couple diced potatoes all sauted together until crisp and then served in a bowl with a fried egg over top. It's a very affordable dinner for my family of 4 and we all love it!
Yes @@JazzyMamaInAK in 70s when husband was in military and when our kids were small I stretched the grocery money alot! I made a spam sandwich spread with mayo , sweet pickles, bo I led egg, mustard s&p. I grated the spam. . It was cheap and tasty.
Thank you, Mary! Very helpful. I didnt grow up with much canned food and didn't use it with my family either. I look at my prepper pantry and think--what am I going to do with this?!😄 It's so great to have ideas on how to combine or make them taste good. If you can make canned potatoes and sardines taste good, that's miracle working. Haha. I'll have to try your ideas.
I use canned potatoes all the time! Like you, I didn't grow up with canned vegetables, neither did my mom, canned soup yes, but I was always told canned veg tastes like a tin can. My mom was shocked by how quickly I pulled soup together on a weeknight for supper while she was visiting- I said it was canned potatoes, I didn't have to wait for them to cook. She is in her 50s and had never had canned potatoes before. Now she makes my soup for herself with canned potatoes 😅
@@thefarmista Nice. The tastiest way I have had canned potatoes are ones I dry canned myself. I sliced them and pressure canned them with some butter and no water. My mother complains even about those, but to me they are okay even when I just heat them up. Potatoes I have canned in water still have a canned taste if I fry them in bacon drippings, but they would be edible in an emergency.🤷♀️ Blessings.
The new Aldi in my city has enabled me to keep my grocery budget to around the same cost it was in 2018 when I started a budget. That includes adjusting the foods I buy to fit the sales, so it's not exactly the same shopping list over the years. But I'm glad I'm not paying a lot more considering inflation and shrinkflation.
Hi Mary, I love you and your channel so much. My daughter has autism and so much of our budget goes towards her care. With all of your interesting videos, I have learned to make so many foods, etc. and spend money better. Thank you for the positivity and knowledge you share❤.
Thank you Mary! You taught me a few things with this video! Specifically, I didnt know chunk light tuna was lower in mercury than white tuna. I usually buy white! Thats going to change. ALSO, I didnt know that traditional refried beans still had lard. Awesome information!
I skip the ice cube trays and when I open a can of tom.paste,I scrape the leftover into a 1 qt. Ziploc bag that I flatten and freeze .takes up almost no space, and I break off what I need ,Rezip and back in the freezer. My husband is European and did all our cooking for 25 years. I'm a frugal Yank Opening a new can to use 1or 2 tablespoons, then saving the reminder in the fridge wearing an aluminum foil hat made no sense to me. He would prefer buying the tubes like he used to when money was no object. We have an Aldi where I go about once a month.their selection of German sausages and aged cheese are a real draw and they sell lovely European Chocolate bars. Years ago my habit when flying home to the US,I skipped the duty free shop, but spent coins I couldn't exchange on chocolates. My husband loves dark chocolate and a dark bar for himand a milk chocolate bar for me always go home as part of an Aldi haul.I will pay more attention to the dried pasta! I've been doing our main grocery shopping at Wal-Mart since the lockdown because for $100 /yr. They deliver to our door if I order $35 worth. I buy those unsweetened applesauce cups and pineapple cups because they are shelf stable and a good size for baking. I hate having food spoil in the fridge, so I tend to buy guac containers rather than avocados. I buy whole milk in tetra packs at the $ store and found that Trader Joe sells heavy cream in 8 oz tetra packs I usually have a at of heavy cream in the fridge.it's the only fresh dairy I buy.the little tetra packs are backups. I hung out at a little dairy farm and saw them separate the milk and the cream was the most expensive and profitable. There were always barn cats around. The skimmed milk was for the calves. It never made sense to me to buy reduced fat dairy. Just use less.
I miss Aldi! Here in Utah, we don't have one. BUT... we do have grocery store case lot sales in September and Dollar Tree. I loved this video because I shopped for foods under one or two dollars this weekend, finding the same items you highlighted. Picked up good tips from the comments, too. Thank you for helping us have peace of mind!
I don’t have lots of space for ice cube trays in freezer but found that scooping the unused paste in 2 separate scoops and putting in 1 freezer bag worked great. I took out 1 scoop last night to thicken my spaghetti sauce and was able to save the other scoop in freezer for next time!
I appreciate your comments. I’m alone and it’s nice to cook for myself. I def enjoy traditional cooking but it’s good to have stuff I can have to access easily when I’m sick. I love Aldis. We used to have fresh and easy stores that I miss. We have Trader Joe’s here that have some good prices for many items. But I appreciate aldis for grocery options. Across from them is winco that also have great prices on items, including bulk items. I usually get my baking soda there because I use it for cleaning as well as cooking. And my very effective homemade deodorant and tooth paste.
Your videos are always done with such care and love Mary. Here is another tip. You can dehydrate all of those frozen vegetables if you want them shelf stable. No blanching necessary, just place on the tray and turn it on. I love all the knowledge shared. Thank you and God Bless!
There are a lot of vegetables that are naturally sweet, so I have been checking online to see whether any unused veggie scraps are edible or not. Things like the stalk/stems of kale/beet-greens/chards/broccoli... They're all edible. Simply dice it up like I would dice celeries, and then boil them to extract their nutrients into my veggie broth. My parents reserve the cob of the corn to make sweet broth too, along with cabbage. Boiled greens will have a savory dipping sauce to go with them. Nothing to waste here in the household.
You can roast the garbanzo beans and either eat them as a snack or grind them up as a flour to bread something or add as an extender to flours especially almond and other gluten free ones. It adds body to them. And as you use a small amount it won’t over whelm the other flours
Hi Sweet Mary. I love your channel and You! I am basically carnivore, and came upon your channel to learn more about bone broth. I was hoping you would do more prepper pantry of quality meat, egg and dairy staples? Thank you so much for helping us to keep and stay healthy and happy ❤
I was so excited when we just got an Aldi's in our little town back in July, but I had been buying from them when I went an hour away to a larger city. Love their food and great selections of seasonal items - but also found out quickly that those seasonal items are just that. They are not always around but for a short time, so if you find something you like you might want to buy up some for when they no longer carry them until the next year. An example is the Bagel Chips. They normally carry those right before Christmas because a lot of people use them in their Trail mix, they make at Christmas time. So, grab them now if you use them for that because you might now be able to find them when you need them in the month of December. Thank you, Mary, for all the good recommendations, I made a list that I can take with me to the store in the next couple of days to stock up on some things I need!! Good day and God Bless!! 🥰♥🥰
@MarysNest Hey Mary thanks for all the tips! People need to realize that when these shipping ports go on strike (Oct 1st) the shelves at the stores will be emptying out!! For every one day they are on strike it will take a week down the road to recover!! So RUN to the stores and get what you can afford to buy! I am a faithful Aldi's shopper too! They have so many great products. I loved Nigella Lawson! She is such an awesome cook and nothing was ever specific with her recipes. That's what I loved about her. Then we had the Matriarch of ALL Julia Child! When they started the new guidelines about thawing out a turkey was the funniest show of all time!! She says on her show, " I am 80 years old and I have not died from thawing the SOB in the sink and I will continue to do so!!" I wanted to fall in the floor, so funny!! God bless you all !!
Hi Mary, I just wanted to comment that the little individual portions of applesauce can be great if you need a substitute for butter, oil, eggs, or sugar in baking. It is a 1:1 swap. I’m not sure about the Aldi ones, but the name brand cups are 1 cup portions which is especially handy to make many of those swaps rather than opening a larger jar or can.
Love Aldi! Did my first pick up with them this week which was such a life saver! So much organic and better quality food- especially the grass fed beef! Starting your curriculum this week! My daughter is so excited!
Totally agree! And so happy to hear that you are starting the curriculum!! Be sure to check out the blog posts on my website too for even more guidance. Love, Mary
Great pantry stocking ideas! Wanted to say, I'm using your curriculum for my daughter and I in her homeschool lessons this year! We're loving it. My husband also appreciates it because he's our taste tester! 😉 Thanks!
Hello I am a new subscriber and I’m so happy I stumbled across this video. I learned some new things to add to the knowledge that I have. Great video. Thanks for sharing
I just love your balanced approach to buying and preparing food. Perfection is not the object! Making the healthiest food, in the most natural way for the best price is great but only if it isn’t a frustrating struggle. Sometimes opening a can is necessary. Our pioneer ancestors did everything by hand and from scratch, but they also didn’t have the demands on their time and energy that we do. Reading labels alone can instantly make your family healthier. Thank you so much for doing all this research that we can benefit from. ❤
I love the idea of a blessing box. I’ll share this thought and make one to donate. Hahaha! Tuna noodle casserole. I just talked about that with friends. Is Nigella where that term came from? Hahaha! My friend who is a librarian told us how to spell it. Can’t remember how but just interesting. My husband loves it Vienna sausage. He buys it to take on fishing trips for lunch. I’ve bought those sardines packed in hot sauce, hubby liked it. He’s like Mikey. He likes most things. This was a great video. So many tips. I hadn’t thought about some of tomato products I usually buy at Kroger. Love these tips.
I make a lot of that escarole soup every winter and can what I don’t eat. The secret is one entire head of garlic (or more). It blends the flavors. Living in north jersey we’re seriously into garlic and Italian cuisine. I usually put a bit more grated garlic in a few minutes before eating.
You can never go wrong with pasta, and there are endless small budget ways to prepare it. If you have spaghetti handy, you will not be starving. Same with rice, and even with oatmeal. Imagination is the limit.
Aloha Mary. I am sitting here on my last night in Hawaii watching your video and look forward to going to Aldi when I return home. I wanted to share with you a couple things... 1) I love the Simply Nature Organic Katsup from Aldi's. I think it tastes better than the brand named one. 2. I got tired of stirring the Kirkland peanut butter (Ingredients are simply roasted peanuts and sea salt). So I poured it all out along with the peanut butter into a food processor and blended it all together until it was absolutely blended and then poured it into glass jars about half full so so I wouldn't spill if I had to mix it again and guess what? It has been months, and I haven't had to stir it once. It stays blended up pretty well.
I buy those organic tomato marinara jars. It makes a great sauce when I make gluten free lasagna or a base for pizza sauce (I doctor it with salt free Italian seasoning).
The individual serving sizes of fried and canned fruit are great for cookies, cakes, pancakes, quick breads, etc. usually just the right amount without having to open a larger container and wondering what to do with the leftovers. In fact, with only the two of us, I'm starting to can many things in half pint jars--from fruit to meats. just the right size of sausage for gravy and biscuits.
I used to make a cobbler with them. Delicious! We can’t have all that sugar anymore so now it’s just the fruit with sugar free jello and a little evap milk on top. Still good (but not as good ;))
Mary! In Florida we have a "hurricane Emergency Box". Your help with Aldi canned food was a great help! Thank you! JACKIE FISHER Here we are in Florida in November and we are having a hurricane watch!! Will we ever get away from Hurricanes this year?!!
We’ve used canned potatoes since I was a kid and cooked dinner in the 70s. Always put them in stews, around a roast, or roasted with butter and parsley. Used sliced ones to sauté with onions and mushrooms to go with steak.
Hi Mary! Thank you for this! The next several years ahead are going to be very rough, so I am glad to have learned so much from your channel. Let's all take care of one another because many of our neighbors will be going through very hard times. Sending love
Love you, Mary! We love all these! And I have often made mashed potatoes for my dad and use some fresh potatoes and supplemented with our canned potatoes to rotate out. And they are always delicious! My mom's recipe always called for some sour cream and some half-and-half and they are delicious!
My Aldi’s is 45 minutes away but I just wanted to say those Moderna pasta is .50 at my local WM in the ethnic area (Spanish). So even though a few pennies more than Aldi but not worth 45 miles of gas. I love using those in my MIJ or JAW meals in jars
Hi Mary, thank you so much for all your cooking lessons and recipes. Today I made the tomato soup you taught us to make. IT IS ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! My husband loved it so did I. Can’t wait to try it in recipes. Blessings. 🙏🏻❤️
For canned food you want to keep fresh in the fridge for a few days you can buy a package of the lids online that are marketed for canned pet food. A single lid is designed to fit multiple different sized cans. I use a dry erase marker to date the lids so I know how long the can has been in the fridge. I prefer the silicone over the plastic version because the silicone seals better and you can actually press the air out (like Tupperware) and it helps keep the food fresher longer.
Wow, what a great video!! I buy almost all of these items at Aldi. We have shopped there for a good 15 years or more, and they just seem to get better and better! I've looked for the small bags of pasta, and never found them, in all these years! I love their pastas, and I stock all kinds for variety. I can my own tomato products, but I also buy theirs. Funny you should talk about SPAM. I cooked a favorite dish for breakfast today, but I substituted dehydrated potatoes and a can of Bacon SPAM in it, just to see if we still liked it. While it wasn't exactly like the original with smoked sausage, it was very good, and I think I'll be making it that way more often. I bought lentils and kidney beans from Aldi this week, but they have gone up to $1.35. Lentils used to be under a dollar, but earlier this year, they had them on sale for 99c. I stocked them along with split peas at that price, and then they went up to $1.25. I couldn't beat that price at Dollar Tree, because they had started shrinking the product down to 12 oz. Something else you can do is pressure can dried beans to make them more convenient. Another gal I watch waits until she has emptied enough jars to fill her canner, and cans whatever kinds of beans she thinks she'll be needing. At any rate, having beans on the shelf in a can is very handy. My husband LOVES when I fry a can of sliced potatoes in butter! Makes a nice little side for the 2 of us. I bought several packages of Aldi's organic frozen mixed vegetables, used up two older cans of Aldi crushed tomatoes, and made a vegetable soup base to can. It turned out great, and I can make several different meals from them. I usually buy the chili with no beans, so I'm getting more meat--and I can add a can of beans or whatever to it, if I want. I took 2 of my older cans of pumpkin and dehydrated them, then powdered them. I can still use them for baking, etc., but I'll be able to keep them longer. Sorry for writing a book, but your list reminded me of some things I've been doing with these items. And by the way, thank you for the idea of making mashed potatoes out of the canned potatoes! I was just wondering about that last night!!
I use lentils, brown rice & mashed black beans to make vegetarian meatballs and meatloaf. Add a bunch of finely chopped veggies like mushrooms, carrots, celery, onions and a few tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce.
Hello, I am a new viewer and this is first of your videos I have watched. I will watch more right away. I am especially intrigued by the trivet and tea lights. Which of your videos tells more about how to use the trivet? I plan to use the link to buy them, but maybe not immediately because we had a lay off in our household. Still I find that your tips will be very useful. Thank you!
‼greatly appreciated sweet Mary - its prudent to stock up - Here in Ireland the rice I bought and stored (Properly) a few years ago have the SAME best before date as todays! -- we are buying stock from years ago! -- and I know that Chu=ina has paid ANY price to corner up to 60% of global harvest
I'm in the uk and agree .. I've recently bought cheap peas at the middle isle place lid l .. and found they're made from reconstituted dried peas. ( the moment I saw them I just thought these are dried stored stock that are probably being rotated out for newer ones and they just soaked and cannes them to sell them off ) I've noticed that tuna in oil has a longer shelf life than in water or brine but in our shops the fish is dated early 26 to 27. But I know I used to buy canned fish with 4 or 5 years on it. And powdered milk is either close to date.. unavailable or extortionate
@@theyrenuts2845 yes - Im seeing all those things too - it is concerning ( then add inflation and shrinkflation) many are feeling the pinch - Electricity set to rise (9% I think) this month too.
Thank you!!! As usual a GOLD MINE of info. Because of you, I have traditions so much into a traditional foods kitchen, but also have a bit of convenience back ups For example I make my own refried beans from your instant pot/pinto bean recipe video. But I have also purchased Aldi’s traditional refried beans just in case I run out.
I'm one of those men who are in charge of the kitchen and been prepping for a few years. Mary, everything you showed us here I have and when they near exp/bb date, i either give them away or cook something up and freeze it for another day. Thanks for validating my "going crazy buying cheap canned and jarred goods" as my wife would say I am lol... Question: is canned baking POWDER still good after its BB date?
I have had baking powder beyond the bb date work completely fine if it is SEALED if it has been lingering open past the bb date, it's definitely less potent. My husband is a prepper at heart and an excellent cook, but I'm the chief cook. I'm thankful now we have a pantry, previous apartments got interesting with overflowing cupboards. Can avalanches are scary 😅
I thank you so very much Mary for all you do to help us. I’m running low on my “stash” (some from back in 2020). Things are scary expensive now and winter is coming. I live in Michigan so the roads can be very bad sometimes. I’m going to be 71 soon so the less I need to run to the store the better. ❤❤❤
I buy the shelf-stable tortellini and use them with veggies, meat, and a sauce, or sometimes just garlic butter and a sprinkle of parm. It's great to use with leftover chicken and a bag of frozen broccoli for a quick meal. I recently bought 12 cans of reduced sodium SPAM on Amazon for just over $2 a can on special, and Walmart has 14oz canned salmon for about $3 a can, it makes great salmon patties, I remove the skin and bones.
I used to not care about the brand name of my pasta. But as I've gotten older, I make sure that my pasta is made in Italy. Some of the pasta at Aldi's may be made in Italy. I'm going to check to see. Thank you. I just found your channel and watched a sourdough video. Just started making sourdough bread recently after not making it since my children grew up. I've not perfected the art of sourdough baking yet, if anyone ever does.
Hey Mary. It seems like more cans are being made with the pull tab lids instead of the solid lids. What is your opinion on long storage for those? Thank you for all you do!!
for my long term storage I try to buy pasta sauce in Jars....they can go longer than the expiry date and they are in glass..and you can jazz up with ground beef, beans, whatever or spices?
I was so excited to see this video title come up. Just the other day I was hoping you would do another Aldi video. The price cap is helpful. I'd love another Costco shopping post when you can too. Healthy choices not price restricted. I have to say you are the first person to even tempt me to buy canned potatoes. Time will tell if I pull the trigger on that, but I have never been even temped to until now. Those ways to cook them sound promising. Thanks for all you do! God Bless.

😊😊
These exact noodles are now $0 .58 !! Newcastle, County, DE. as of 9.29.24
Hi Mary!! I was very interested in this video, and I'd like to know where you purchased the trivet shown with the tea candles.
Thanks so much!!
Susie
Great video. Time to go back to basics - recipes from my childhood. Wonderful Aldi's to save money.
Honestly, tomato paste is the only tomato product you NEED.
I'm on a self induced No Shop October. I can't buy anything till Nov 10th. Have to pay property tax. Thanks for helping me prep in the past to get thru this.
I've also decided to have a No Shop October. I'll inventory and make meals in bags, etc. Getting ready to move in the spring.
There’s still another day before October 1st
@@Mustangs73 thanks for the insight. All that's left from September is pocket change👿🙄
Those beans seam to be worth a try
When i was very young & poor, I lived on canned sliced potatoes sautéed with garlic & onions.
In my younger days I cooked sliced apples with onions, oil, and paprika. I didn't have enough to add a typical protein such as pork chops. Cornbread with canned beans and some shredded cheese was an evening meal.
I lived on baked potatoes with ranch dressing!
I'm 58 and that's our go to camping breakfast! The kids (grown now) still want me to make them! They really are good. I would remind people that canned potatoes never brown when you fry them up. 😅 I used to try. 😂
Canned potatos are a lot more expensive than those in a 10 lb bag. Easy enough to cook fresh potatos. 🥔🥔🥔
@heidimisfeldt5685 But when you are looking at long-term storage, canned makes sense.
God bless you Mary. You're such a breath of fresh air &, I dare say, a living Saint. 🕊
WOW!! That is very kind of you to say!! Love, Mary
Patron saint of preppers.
Italian pasta, less glycumic!!!! So good to know. Might start eating pasta again
Barilla is not a good brand. I live in Spain, i never buy that brand.
@@silviamagda That's sad to know, I really like it too. What do you recommend?
@@zhippidydoodah my favorites are rummo, de cecco, la molisana and garofalo. I don't know if you have any of that.
@@zhippidydoodah DeCecco is a good brand that you can find in most stores.
You’re too funny! ❤
You never need to apologize for the crunching of the bags!
Haha sometimes it's nice for that bit when people are too snobbish, it's less crowded for those of us excited to shop there!
The extra light syrups etc in the fruits in canned the syrup can be added to making bread when water is nit as readily available.
I used to use the tomato paste I needed, the put the rest in T size dollops on wax paper then flash freeze it & toss in a ziploc bag.
That’s a great idea!!
My italian grandmother did that and added olive oil with basil in ice cube trays
Yes that’s the way I do it too, less mess and easier to use than the ice block method
Where did you purchase your flash freezer? Was it very expensive?
My mother would slice spam, bread it with flour/egg/crushed soda crackers. She fried it up like a breaded meat patty served it with mashed potatoes and a veggie.
That sounds yummy. 😊
I actually genuinely enjoy the crinkly sound from the packages. 🙂
Thank you for mentioning food pantries!! I often scoop up bargains I run across specifically to donate to our local food pantry. It’s a win win!! 😊
Potatoes! Being a single mother I have learned to ALWAYS keep canned potatoes in my pantry. They can be better than people realize. Excellent video Pantry stockup time for country living - you never know when you get wintered in and for how long. I hope everyone listens and learns from this information you provided
Thank you, Mary. Aldi's is not conveniently located for me, so stocking up on Aldi's items would make a lot of sense for us. Cheers.
(White/Navy beans or black beans are both great for stretching any ground beef recipe.)
I also bought several flats of Stokley canned green beans and corn at Joe Vs, which is the budget little brother of HEB.
Ty as always! Those 49 cent noodles have the best ingredients! Very healthy!
“Blessing Box” 📦 what a great idea Mary. I think for seniors. 😇
Love your presentation Mary! I feel like I am sitting across from you but just cant get a word in😂 great helpful tips, thankyouu!
MOTHER MARY, ALDI’S IS MY FAVORITE SUPERMARKET BECAUSE THEIR PRICES ARE CONSISTENTLY AFFORDABLE🙌🏾🙏🏾
So happy to hear that!! Love, Mary
Sure but a lot of the food is c*** especially the pasta
Although, aldi's food is MAJORITY bio-engineered.. so not so good after all.
@@Jacqj64every store in the US is mostly bioengineered crap
@@teresahendley5659 yes, but aldi's is definitely nothing to brag on.. it has sold out too. Plus, their produce has a lesser shelf life. So, actually, you pay for what you get.
Spam: my mom cut filets of Spam, browned in a fry pan, and topped with a tomato slice and cheese til melted. It was VERY tasty!!
My personal favorite is "spam and taters" diced spam, a couple diced potatoes all sauted together until crisp and then served in a bowl with a fried egg over top. It's a very affordable dinner for my family of 4 and we all love it!
For summer I make a version of the Luncheon Spread that on the website. Mix with HB eggs and mayo. I add paprika
Yes @@JazzyMamaInAK in 70s when husband was in military and when our kids were small I stretched the grocery money alot! I made a spam sandwich spread with mayo , sweet pickles, bo I led egg, mustard s&p. I grated the spam. . It was cheap and tasty.
You can drain your peas and mix with tuna onion and may makes a salad yum!
Thanks for that idea to make classic tuna noodle casserole! I have some of those egg noodles on hand and I haven't made that dish in a while.
Your voice is so sweet and friendly I like to listen even when I already no about what you will say. It is like visiting a good friend
Thank you, Mary. You are such a sweet, helpful guide on the traditional food journey. May the Lord bless and guide you.
I put the sliced potatoes drained in the air fryer spray with olive oil. They are really easy.
My mother made cream gravy to serve over salmon patties. Sounds weird but delicious. Loved it.
I do the same thing for plastic bags and then I just break off a chunk and throw it into whatever I’m cooking and the rest goes back into the freezer😂
Mary, so lovely that you mentioned Patera! the both of you keep me prepared and sane. many thanks
Also garbanzos for wonderful falafels
And now great in the air fryer
Have followed you for years. So appreciate you and how you share knowledge ♥️
I use the cans of tomato paste to make ketchup 😊
Thank you! Times are hard and I'm on a fixed income, so this helps a LOT! God bless!

You blew my mind with your statement the Al denté noodles can have a lower gi!
Totally agree! And so happy to hear that you are starting the curriculum!! Be sure to check out the blog posts on my website too for even more guidance. Love, Mary
We have been doing a blessing box in our town for yrs. It’s a nice way to help people out threw out the town.

Great pantry stocking ideas!
Wanted to say, I'm using your curriculum for my daughter and I in her homeschool lessons this year! We're loving it. My husband also appreciates it because he's our taste tester! 😉

I love the idea of adding a few extra items that can be donated to a food pantry or someone in need!
Mary, you are a treasure to my family. Thank you!
Tuna casserole is on of many foods I would never eat when I was out of my mother's house. 🤢
I love to go shopping with little cash and see what i can buy...your video was very encouraging..thank you mary for all the wonderful information.....
If you cook pasta and freeze then heat up reduce gl index by 30%.
I love having the canned potatoes on hand for a special breakfast of fried potatoes to go with the eggs
Enjoyed this video. A great resource. A larger Aldi to buy cases would be nice in our area. 😊
You can also spread the sauce on parchment and dehydrate it like fruit leather
I never thought I would consider canned potatoes, but I’m going to try them! Great idea!
I have canned my own and they make great fried potatoes.
Hello beautiful Mary! I just have to say that I loved that you referenced In Nigella Lawson.Ive been watching her since the"90's😊
Aldi is my go to grocer, especially produce because it is more reasonably priced.
My Aldi’s is 45 minutes away but I just wanted to say those Moderna pasta is .50 at my local WM in the ethnic area (Spanish). So even though a few pennies more than Aldi but not worth 45 miles of gas. I love using those in my MIJ or JAW meals in jars
I find the big cans of crushed tomatoes from Aldi excellent! Better than most Italian brands I’m very picky with my sauce!
No Aldi's here in the Pacific Northwest but we do have WinCo...looks like similar prices for the most part.
Hi Mary, thank you so much for all your cooking lessons and recipes. Today I made the tomato soup you taught us to make. IT IS ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! My husband loved it so did I. Can’t wait to try it in recipes. Blessings. 🙏🏻❤️
Good information. While watching, I thought, boy what a lucky fella your husband is having such a smart/wonderful wife like you.❤
For canned food you want to keep fresh in the fridge for a few days you can buy a package of the lids online that are marketed for canned pet food.
I was just wondering about that last night!!
brilliant suggestions! 😊
My meals when out of work earlier in life was a cheap mac and cheese box w a can of tuna mixed in.
I use lentils, brown rice & mashed black beans to make vegetarian meatballs and meatloaf. Add a bunch of finely chopped veggies like mushrooms, carrots, celery, onions and a few tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce.
Thank you for the idea !!
Thank you!
Mushy peas with canned peas are one of my favorites!
Love this! Thank you for sharing🤗
Have you ever used butter or bacon grease to make those potatoes?
I wonder if that would work.
Pour off liquid, pat dry and fry them up.
I fry the drained potatoes in butter, Wonderful ❤
I like Spam, occasionally. I am glad to hear this is comparable. I won’t eat Treat. Thanks for checking it out.
I’m going to research that question.
for my long term storage I try to buy pasta sauce in Jars....they can go longer than the expiry date and they are in glass..and you can jazz up with ground beef, beans, whatever or spices?
I was so excited to see this video title come up. Just the other day I was hoping you would do another Aldi video. The price cap is helpful. I'd love another Costco shopping post when you can too. Healthy choices not price restricted. I have to say you are the first person to even tempt me to buy canned potatoes. Time will tell if I pull the trigger on that, but I have never been even temped to until now. Those ways to cook them sound promising. Thanks for all you do! God Bless.
