    Cool little engine my wife’s Grandfather was a Steam Engineer and when he retired he used to make wooden toys and fit similar sized engines in them ! After his passing we we had them passed on to us my personal favorite was a tugboat with a steam engine that ran off canned Map gas firing a hand built boiler he made out of copper he was a brilliant Craftsman and even volunteered to run the Wood shop at his retirement community where they built many whirlybird Lawn ornaments that they displayed through out the community i was also fortunate to have a good relationship with the man and inherited some of his tools that i still treasure to this day

      Well it's not meant to run perfectly smooth like a traditional 4 cycle engine, the weight of the flywheels are supposed to keep the engine turning and when it begins to slow down the engine will fire again to keep the flywheel speed up.

    Such a cool little engine. As mentioned, it might be nice if you modded the springs to make it run a bit slower. And you're a machinist/fabricator; make up a pulley and belt drive a little hobby electric motor and make it generate some juice to light a light bulb. (Could recharge it's own ignition batt. too...) Being that it runs at a constant speed more or less, it's ideal for a generator app. Thanks.

    It looks as if the pushrod starts bouncing off the cam and then the engine floods and stalls until the pushrod settles back down. super fascinating! every one in the comment section is saying turn the governor down but i think it would be interesting to see what a stronger spring on the pushrod/rocker arm would do.

      The electrical black box looked to be a coil. Could a 12 volt DC car coil work as well? Run a car alternatore from the engine to charge some NiKD batteries to run the black box or coil for the spark plug for the engine. The alternatore could also charge a car battery or 1865 NiKD battery bank and power a inverter to produce 120 volts AC, and power some house hold appliances.

      This must be a joke that I don't get. The EPA is not the regulatory body that oversees tiny, little, engine emissions. And I think you were thinking of a catalytic converter that the state DMV would make you aquire.
      A Catalyst is a substance Catalyst, in chemistry, any substance that increases the rate of a reaction without itself being consumed. Enzymes are naturally occurring catalysts responsible for many essential biochemical reactions.

    need to put a little motor on with a tiny heater coil on it as a generator to keep it under load so it runs real nice, the hit and miss is basicly just a rev limiter, like any motor is a hit and miss when its floating the valves at 7k or the rev limiter is cutting spark, one lungers just do it mechanically and their idle is at the rev limiter, they just try to maintain a set rpm that the governor is set for

    It's a closed loop control system that is overshooting. So you get oscillation.
    It's accelerating to the target velocity and quickly overshoots to a greater velocity than the target v, the overshoot causes rapid de-acceleration again overshooting to a slower velocity than the target and so on. Putting a load on it (adding some dampening) reduces the acceleration to the target velocity and it smoothly reaches the target v without overshooting.
    It needs some 'tuning', to stop the oscillation.

      It could definitely provide the 12W (5V 2.4A) necessary for fast charge. You'd want something with a large amount of very thin windings, preferably around (rectified) a 170-240VAC output. Any universal wall adaptor can handle that. More voltage = more efficiency when it comes to generating power, directly creating low voltages is very inefficient.

      It’s running way to fast but when the fly balls on the governor open do to centrifugal force you can hear this motor missing. It’s running so fast that it sounds like it running rough. At one point you are looking at the governor and when the you see the fly balls open, you can see and hear the motor slow down because ignition has been cut off until the fly balls close and and ignition restored. When the governor is open and preventing ignition the engine is said to “missing”

      Interesting point, and I saw the same comments on Kerzel's webpage. But the wording says that the PLANS cannot be sold, repackaged, used in other webpages or publications.......it seems that the Chinese outfit that makes these is not violating any of the above. Kerzel intends for people to make engines from his plans. Nothing is said about whether somebody can sell an engine one they have made it. And if that concept is valid, then the same should apply whether it is one person making one engine and selling it, or a company making a bunch and selling them.

      Not a brake, a governor, and it has to do with how a hit and miss engine works, you remove it, it doesn't work right, if it works at all.

    • @Donnerwamp
      @Donnerwamp 6 лет назад +3

      Could you please explain this?

    • @MineUK60
      @MineUK60 6 лет назад +41

      A hit and miss engine doesn't ignite every revolution. Instead, the engine freewheels until it slows down below a certain RPM. The governor detects that the RPM is too low and ignites the fuel on the next stroke to speed the engine back up again.
      It's kind of like riding a skateboard. You push it forward, wait for it to slow down a bit, then push it forward again. If you removed the governor, there'd be nothing to tell the spark plug to ignite, so the engine wouldn't turn on

    • @Donnerwamp
      @Donnerwamp 6 лет назад +9

      So... It's a kind of rev limiter function in a very simple way?

    • @MineUK60
      @MineUK60 6 лет назад +10

      Immi Ogmios
      Without the governor, the engine's spark plug would not ignite so the engine would not run.
      The governor doesn't *cut off ignition above a certain RPM*
      The governor actually *creates ignition below a certain RPM*
      A four stroke (e.g. car) engine creates an ignition every 2nd time the engine turns regardless of RPM.
      I suppose it does limit the RPM, yes, but that's not the governor's primary purpose. Hopefully that makes sense? :)

  • @garychandler4296

      did do not watch the video? a "Watt governor" is already on it. Watt also didnt invent the "Watt governor" all he did was electrify the centrifugal switch that had been in use since the 16000s. also a H/M engine is not designed to run smooth or stable, they are intentionally designed to run at +/- 30ish% rpms

    Hoping you hack it next video to make it run smoother, and power an electric generator of some sort!

    • @vylbird8014
      @vylbird8014 6 лет назад +12

      You can't. The very un-smooth running is characteristic of a hit-and-miss engine - it's designed to skip most strokes under low load, not opening the intake valve until the RPM falls. This capability gives it very good fuel efficiency when unloaded, at the expense of erratic torque and speed. If you hacked it to run smooth, it wouldn't be a hit-and-miss any more, and would consume many times the volume of fuel.

    Needs some tuneup. Could be needs more gas or air or differing plug. All has to be timed perfectly in order just like a car. That's why when you used your hand like a governor slowing it down it sounded more timed and tuned up.

    Hey man, really like your machinist videos and cool projects:)
    I was curious if you've really torn into this thing.
    Like seen if it uses like needle bearings, ball bearings, or just bearing surfaces. I tried contacting Bangood's customer support to ask if they sell replacement parts, and it was of no help to me... I see there are upgraded models coming out now. It just looks like such a cool engine to run for fun!

      What he should have done was build it on a wooden stand , like they used to in the old days. with handles and a set of wheels on it then it would have looked true to its time period . an aluminum stand would look ridiculous. Just because it is not of the right time period

    @JohnnyQ90 It seems that the engine gets pretty slow triggering the governor mechanism. To make it smoother, maybe try loosening the governor springs? Or lubricate the parts a little more or try increasing some clearances manually to reduce friction? I don't know.

    Hi - great video about this neat engine !
    These days I received mine, but discovered a strange thing:
    The wheel with the governor masses is loose on its axis; even a bit wobbling; it can be shifted along the axis for some 10 mm !!.
    I guess that this is not OK, since by these means the governor mechanics cannot close the outlet valve ? !
    How would you comment this (malfunction) ?

  • @TFWS6
    @TFWS6 6 лет назад

    You should make a clutch bell to fit over the governor weights.

  • @karlh5645
    @karlh5645 6 лет назад

    The push rods needs to be adjusted so that the cam doesn't hit it when it is latched by the governor latch, which generates an annoying high frequency clicking sounds and wear out the components faster.

  • @barryphillips7327
    @barryphillips7327 6 лет назад

    Did not seem to want to run smoothly but when you put hand on the flywheel to give it load it ran smooth.

    • @ben-jd8kk
      @ben-jd8kk 6 лет назад

      This is the nature of a hit and miss, it's not meant to run smooth like a traditional 4 cycle engine. The weight of the flywheels are meant to keep the engine turning and when the rpms begin to drop the engine will fire again to keep the rpms up. This model is running very fast compaired to a full size hit and miss, I suggest looking up a vid of the real thing for a better understanding. :)

    • @barryphillips7327
      @barryphillips7327 6 лет назад

      Correct, but surprisingly it was just warm to the touch and I had it running for several minutes under load (my hand or a simple generator). I think what will first lead to a seized up piston, is the lack of proper lubrication.
