Would you get into a plane that only had 2 plugs in it? Would have been better to build it horizontally, then heat all 8 cylinders.

    Had some pretty bad memories on the topic of Stirling engines, and then this video title get reccomended to me.
    I will tell a story just to get the frustration off my chest.
    This was when i was in high school, and we had to do a science research project. This was the kind where you had to show the proper usage of the scientific method.
    We were a group of 5 people, nobody wanted to be the leader, even me, but i stepped up because i wanted to graduate highschool.
    Now if anyone asks, im not really fit to be a leader since a good leader for me has the following traits
    -Likeable personality
    -Communicates very articulately
    -has a lot of friends
    I was the quiet kid with very few friends, so im pretty sure my other group members didnt like that i was the leader.
    My problem with the topic of stirling engines came when we needed to come up with a research topic.
    For starters its quite hard to give an acceptable research topic. it had to be simple enough that a highschooler is smart enough to record the data. It needs to be cheap enough that we dont ask our parents ridiculous amounts of capital, and it has to be a topic that has not been done before.
    Quotations on "has not been done before". The school has like 50 years of highschoolers doing this project, and if the teacher rejects the topic because they know a previous group has already done it, then we need to come up with a new topic.
    i couldnt come up with any acceptable ideas, about 2 of mine were shot down. Now i asked my group members to help me think of ideas for a title topic.
    i asked them to suggest at least 1.
    and then we have this certain guy. He's usually a decent dude, but he was pretty bad for the health of the project in this case. His idea was "lets make a Stirling engine" we went and asked what a stirling engine is. It looked like some spinny metal contraption that runs on some kind of heat.
    Now since im the quiet kid who just thinks alot, i intuitively know that the idea isnt going to work out as a topic, but i was not able to properly communicate to him "why" I probably was not even smart enough to articulate what i wanted to say. But now that im typing here in the comments, its pretty easy to explain why it was a bad idea.
    It was because it didnt ask a question. and it also had no controlled and independent variables.
    Simply building something cool like a stirling engine does not make a research project. You need to build something cool and compare it to something reasonably similar and mundane.
    He kept insisting that he had a good idea, and i kept saying its not going to work, and after that he goes and says "well i suggested the minimum of 1 idea, now you guys come up with a better one"
    It basically felt like malicious compliance, pushing the responsiblity on everyone else while also doing my condition of 1 suggested topic per member.
    That whole ordeal made me feel quite retarded to be honest.
    I felt like people would hate how i looked unempathetic to that member
    I felt like i was not smart enough to explain the problem
    I felt like i had to do everything because nobody wants to help.
    We later settled on a rather a dumb sounding topic i came up with. Deodorant using different citrus fruits and comparing it to commercial deodorant.
    If anyone is interested in the results, it was pretty bad, the orange, lemon, and calamansi juice ended up smelling like rotten fruit on the armpits overtime.

    If you think about the thermodynamics: the amount of energy produced from which one of cylinders is a product of temperature difference between hot and cold spot within each motor ( I conclude myself in easy way) . So as many suggested also before me: the best result will obtains when you turn the wheel into horizontal plan and/or make sure than each cylinder gets some amount of heating ( preferably equal amount) and at the same time make sure that you have the cold spot for each and every motor. Then theoretically you will get the highest efficiency thus highest outcome RPM.

      move the heating element back, use it or a boiler medium to melt a closed pipe assembly filled with parafin wax, then wrap the piped parafin around the hot-side pistons, insulate the section of pipe between the heater and the coils. the wax has a high transition range between solid and liquid, so once heated the energy can be stacked pretty high which might more efficiently use the energy produced by the burning wick. That is, assuming the heat given off by the coils of molten parafin around the pistons have enough energy output to run the engine

      @elijah mikle It is not pushing material into the low spots as the primary operation, though some deformation along those lines would occur. That was an abrasive 3M foam sanding block. Aluminum is not that soft and the polishing operation doesn't get the metal hot enough to deform. Your sound wave analogy is good though from a surface cross section perspective. Like a glacier, the abrasives knock down the high spots. FYI: Rouge is technically an abrasive .. just a very VERY fine grit one.

      What Is Islam?
      Islam is not just another religion.
      It is the same message preached by Moses, Jesus and Abraham.
      Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and it teaches us to have a direct relationship with God.
      It reminds us that since God created us, no one should be worshipped except God alone.
      It also teaches that God is nothing like a human being or like anything that we can imagine.
      The concept of God is summarized in the Quran as:
      { “Say, He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He does not give birth, nor was He born, and there is nothing like Him.”} (Quran 112:1-4)
      Becoming a Muslim is not turning your back to Jesus.
      Rather it’s going back to the original teachings of Jesus and obeying him

    Put the engine in horizontal position on top of fuel reservoir, that way you can have equal length wick for every cylinder.

      Don't know about this little model one, but here in Sweden we use Stirling engines on some our submarines. They operate _very_ quietly, and rather efficiently since cooling isn't a problem under water. I think they use helium as a working gas, it's more efficient. So Stirlings can definitely do some work.

      T-Gay there are some micro power and heat plants that can be used to heat houses and generate electricity. Only makes sense if you substitute electricity from the net which has been produced with higher emissions (also if solar + heatpump is not an option) Stirling engines combust fuel very efficient, much more so than combustion engines or coal power p.lants

    I might be wrong, but shouldn’t radial engines have an odd number of cylinders? Look at old aircraft radial engines. They all have 5, 7, 9, or 11 cylinders.

    • @tuftuffer2202
      @tuftuffer2202 5 лет назад +1

      The number will always be even with stirling engines i think. Since each stirling"engine" requires a hot and cold cylinder

    Very, very, very cool. First time I've seen a Stirling engine. What are you using for lubricant? I like your use of it wether it's water or mineral oil. Either way, you're doing everything right!!! 👌 1200 rpms on that thing too, wow. Just wow. Impressive.

  • @leathernluv

    You could have made an exhaust guide so that the fuel burned at the bottom the heat flows over each tube for more efficiency. Make it out of glass too, for added beauty and complexity. Don't connect it to the cylinders, just make a hole for the cylinders to poke into. It wouldn't have to fit the cylinders exactly, as it's more a guide than a sealed containment jacket.

    just a weird thought that could have been applied here to fix the wicking issue.i have a few and also made a few certain kind of camp stoves,where like this thing,had tubes with wicks,but a flame heated the tubes,turning the alcohol into a gas under pressure,then came out of ports and was lit.hotter flame,and more consistent.

    • @kayrunjaavice1421
      @kayrunjaavice1421 5 лет назад

      I think it would have similar, but a bit less, torque. The original design was just rather inefficient, since the heat from the bottom flame could still reach the top cylinder, but the heat from the top flame got mostly wasted, as well as being choked for fuel.

  • @Coalrollinfurry
    @Coalrollinfurry 5 лет назад

    Aa much as people want to call it four cylinders it really is not because the air tubing all seems to go directly from lit cylinders to non lit cylinders basically making them afterburn, even a type of egr system.

      All eight are being utilized. In a basic stirling engine, you have one cylinder which absorbs heat and one that radiates it. The act of moving the energy from one cylinder to another is where the work is generated.

    Even the 'fixed' flywheel was not running on center when it was done, it too still wobbled, albeit to a far lesser extent, the problem with single ended crank shafts is that they have a horrible wobble about them.
