The story was by the time J-11s are being produced by the end of 1990s, China was very unsatisfied with the N001 radar and domestic radar that's signifcantly lighter and better performance was inserted into the airframe. However, it messed up the aerodynamics so much that first prototype almost crashed. lead weights carefully into the radar section to make it even flyable. It took nearly half a decade of work before SAC was able to balance the plane properly by using composite material, integerade domestic systems properly via J-11Bs and later J-16s.

Good video with a well-reasoned cautious analysis. As Millenium7* has noted, this stuff is far too complicated for straight 'rip off' copying. The copying and espionage are definitely happening, but those claiming Chinese stuff is all copies are just indulging in Olympic-class cope that promotes head-in-the-sand conclusions.
On the 5th gen attributes, I confess I'm more interested in the networking capability of this and the J-20 than their stealth. The stealth is important, but it's hard to tell how valuable it is for the Chinese concept of operations. For example, if (speculating) the J-20 is intended as an AWACs & tanker killer, then moderately effective forward-aspect LO + a really good long range AAM would make a very effective combo. If that were the case, the Chinese may have made the judgement that the effort to further reduce RCS is better spent on more lethal AAMs.

The machinery and tools were destroyed and they said it would cost an enormous amount of money to re-create it all and get the production back online. For a slightly higher price you can start a new program that uses modern and current tech. Also the F-22s are very expensive to upgrade.

Turkish’s Khaan relies on the west for its engine, so not truly an independent manufacturer.
Korean’s KF-21 is not even a fifth GEN fighter to begin with, and again most of the parts relies on the US.

even if china did rip the entire plans and specs for the F-35 theres no reason why they would copy/paste it. They could just use that as a comparison for their own testing. I think it stands to reason they would afterall want to beat their adversary, not just meet them at the same level. Do consider that 20 years ago a chinese car was some 3 wheel bubble with a scooter engine and now they are mass building cars that actually meet requirements for exports - so they are clearly quite good at improvement and iteration when they put their minds to it. They will probably be flying those tictacs that we all seen in the navy ufo clips in 20 years from now

We don't hear much about the J-20?
What you smoking bro? We don't hear about f22 because it's old and no longer in production. Su-57 because it was never in mass production or use. but j-20 just started it's mass production run and will probably continue to be upgraded with many different variations being built. From 2 seater to electronics warfare version to who knows what else.
We hear about the J-20 more than the F35

People think copying an aircraft is easy, but it's not. Changing even one inch of an aircraft means you have to change and test all the systems again. It's not like math homework where you can just copy and paste. For example, if you change the radar, you need to change all the software. If you change the missile, you need to adjust all the targeting systems. So, you can't completely copy an aircraft. Some say certain planes are copies of the F-35, but that's not true. They might be inspired by the F-35, and some technology might have been stolen by Chinese hackers. If that happened, first, the CIA should be ashamed for not noticing, and second, you should acknowledge that the Chinese are very hard-working. Competing with Western technology isn't as easy as it seems.

Copy pasting plans doesn't make a 5th gen fighter.
If you don't do the research, you don't know the pro's and cons of certain design points.
FWIW Russia's development programs are done in 10's (10 prototypes, 2 of those have the most recent designs and equipment and can be shown as "operational").
That is why we don't see SU-57's or T-14 Armata's (the same deal for Russian tank development. 10 prototypes, 2 rolling tanks).
Russia does their own development though. So they might know what they are talking about.
China, just copy pastes stuff and has no (ZERO) knowledge or experience.
