I don’t know about when a cow comes running to greet you, but we had a big goofy Great Dane that would run to greet my husband when he came home from work. He’d go flying across the yard and if my husband stood still he’d stop in time . But if my husband moved to get out of the way it was like he couldn’t judge where he was and he’d mow him down. Brooke, Mildred doesn’t view you as a care giver, she views you as mama. The way she roots you like a calf roots a mama for milk, and then the way she almost falls asleep when you rub her all says mama.

Moody won’t hurt you. Get you some steel toe shoes. You need to train him to know a specific call. Every time you go in use your call, whether he’s right in front of you or, farther out. If he ever gets out, he will come to that call.

Great idea. I would whistle when I fed the horses. On the few times they got out, I would whistle and they would come running. It’s fun to see them run when I whistle as I head out to feed the animals.

When we built our swales and berms, we first cleared a whole area of scrub trees that we laid out across the hill to the lines of our planned food forest. We then used a wide bucket back hoe which we used to create the swale and used that dirt to dump over the lines of the scrub, We then allowed that to sit for three weeks as we awaited the loads of 'fill' including the stuff dug out of the pool build from the farm three doors down. That free fill was then spread over the top of the scrub rubbish line - it hat rocks and dirt and bits of stuff unidentified buried in it and really pushed down the dried timber trash.
That was left for another month and then buried under some good soil from the cleared area of our house site which we have stored in piles for almost three years now. Those piles have been added to by grass clippings from three local lawn care companies, trash bales that have been rain effected and all the manure form the llama and sheep and even some dairy cattle from the local area. PLUS the doo doo from the circus which included elephants PLUS...recently we even added doo doo from a camel farm that opened up about a year ago just three miles (5 km) down the road.
We now have a variety of 84 fruit trees including some very tropical trees in an area about 50 yards by 150 yards. They nave been in ground for four years, coming on to five years now and we share fruit ranging from mango to jackfruit to citrus and chocolate pudding sapote.
In order to keep weeds down in this area we have planted berries - blue, black and raspberries between the trees and I allow the chickens to free range under the trees all the time...no weeds, no fallen fruit left behind and no problems - or extra costs. Reduced our chicken feed costs, improved the quality of eggs and helps out every time...
(Our chickens are about to be released into the sweet potato patch to clean it up next week so we can harvest them without the fear of running into snakes under that jungle - our Australorps are big tough and nasty and have geese with them at all times)

The advantage of using hot wire for Moody is that you can turn it off when you are working along the fence whereas barbed wire is going to poke holes in your clothing and skin! You might be able to get an old street sweeper broom for the animals scratch
against from your public works department. I love the quality of your videos and the compilations at the end are rocking it!

Have you considered just using wood chips just like "Back to Eden" method. Paul Gautschi has done this for decades and never has to plow or berm his orchard as the wood chips are up to 18 inches high and every few years will add a thin layer of aged chicken manure. Keeps the ground moist as he gets very little rain each year.
Very easy to maintain and very few weeds. No landscaping fabric. You can get a woodchipper and use your own trees instead of burning them, or have a tree trimming company in your area deliver them usually for free. I don't know if you have heard of Paul, but just thought I'd mention it so you don't have to work so hard and use expensive products. I thought I remembered your Little Cog Hill farm you did this BTE for your vegetable garden method, but I'm not sure. Just thought I'd add this just in case you didn't know. If you do know, just forget about it! lol :)
I so enjoy your family, and animal antics with your fun videos, you do such a great job of entertaining us. You always find the best music in your videos. I look forward each new video, keep up the great content. :)

Back in the 80’s, we planted about 200 peach tress at our small farm. In order to keep the weeds and grasses from choking the trees, we got an attachment for the tractor that would cut the weeds/grasses but not damage the trees. I would ask my husband, but he has dementia and isn’t able to remember. I’ll check with our sons later today to see if they remember what it was called.

I always enjoy your videos and podcasts. I know y’all are busy and I shouldn’t take more of my time to watch more. If it’s there I will watch. Thanks.

My experience has been that barbed wire is the only fence that cows respect. Every other fencing material makes a great scratching post. Speaking of scratching post, a down tree makes the best cattle scratching post. A crooked tree with broken off branches that stick up are fantastic for them. They can scratch so many different parts that an upright scratcher can't get to, like under their neck. Best part is it's free. A tree or 2 that Greg has taken out would be perfect.

Girl you "TOOT" all you want I bet it is awesome... toot toot.. Fruit Orchard here she comes!!! Oh I love the stone idea but really think Pine bark mulch is good. Loving Moody just loving on Jason. So waiting for someone to yell my shoulder is broke. He has a big head. Each day he stands his ground for his head scratching and big hugs and pats. He is such a good boy. Mildred and such a tiny sweet heart.. I so love when she runs into her feeding area waiting on Mama Brooke. So glad the animals are doing so well and happy. 🧡❤💛💚💙💜

You need to have Longhorn Lester help you with your fences. That he does do very well.

Jason I ordered my seeds from Hoss this year to try and make a bigger garden. They were easy to find what I needed. I am very happy to have that done. As soon as they get here, I am off and running. Thanks for your showing me the difference in seeds. I have become a better garden person because of your tips.

I like the animal and music at the end of your videos especially that you do not play the music LOUDLY, and I do not have to adjust the volume at the end of the video, it is just right! Hugs

Love the podcasts and progress. We use electric fence tape for our livestock including cows and horses. I wasn’t sure it would work in the beginning, but from the beginning they learned to respect the fence. It has been great for the past decade. T-posts and electric fence tape would work for Moody and Mildred too.

Your podcasts and videos give me such a lift. You have no idea how much you have helped me through some really rough times. I went into kidney failure last April and immediately had two simultaneous surgeries in the hope of being able to do paritoneal dialysis in my home seven nights a week. It was a long haul until I could start on June 2nd and it has saved my life. I had been much sicker for the prior 3 years than I even realized. Any way, "that being said", I have a new lease on life. I laid in my hospital bed and watched you at Little Cog Hill. Now I watch for any new podcast or video. I love Jason's choices of music. It adds so much. Most of it I haven't heard before. Thank you for all the care and effort you put into your posts.

We had a local, family nursery that made it through local, economic down turns through thier free classes, being involved in the greater community, and thier on-site displays. Few knew that thier infamous koi pond began as a special order a customer failed to pick up. The back bone of thier promotions etc... through the years were thier classes however.
