  • Welcome you to the 102nd season of San Francisco Opera. This is such an exciting time at the Opera. Under the baton of Music Director, Eun Sun Kim, the musical values of the company are soaring. We’re seeing a fabulous variety of aesthetics onstage, and we are telling stories that help us understand the complexity of today’s world.
The 2024-25 season comprises six extraordinary operas. We open the season with Verdi’s lyrical, dramatic opera of political intrigue, Un ballo in Maschera or A Masked Ball. Next is Poul Ruders’ The Handmaid’s Tale - an operatic version of the searingly powerful novel by Margaret Atwood in which a theocratic regime has taken over America by force, subjugating women to be surrogates against their will. Written in the same year that Ballo premiered, Eun Sun’s Wagner opera this season is one of the most epic romances of all time, Tristan and Isolde. We round out the fall season with one of the great operas, Bizet’s Carmen, in which we showcase the American premiere of French mezzo-soprano Eve-Maud Hubeaux. We will have Mozart’s Idomeneo onstage. King Idomeneo is returning from the Trojan Wars when his ship is caught in a mighty storm. And we end the season with La Bohème for the first time in eight years, with two wonderful casts including the joyful artistry of tenor Pene Pati. It’s an opera that so perfectly captures the emotional intensity of everyday life - a reminder that each of us carries our own operatic stories.
