Great movie. I initially thought it was a mess like many others, but then realized, I missed something. Life is a mess. Life does not come together perfectly at the end. People die and things go unresolved. Great movie.
Anderson is not an all-time favorite of mine, but he is without question one of the greatest directors of my generation. Just having a film like "There Will Be Blood" on your resume would be enough to place you among the best working filmmakers. RUclipsrs, who are some of your favorite directors? I'm genuinely curious.
I've just come here after watching the 1998 interview with Anderson chatting to Mike Figgis with a mouthful of pizza - the difference in his behaviour is massive
The best American filmmakers are PTA and Fincher. Nolan and Tarantino are great too, but they are just not on the same level as those two. And I mean currently, of course.
+Samuli Hynninen Fincher is not on the level of PTA, Tarantino, Cianfrance, Coen Brothers imo. Se7en is brilliant, but his last two have been very average to me, not to mention Panic Room and Alien 3 which offer nothing to cinema. Zodiac is very well-made but i don't find it has that rewatch factor. Fight Club does have that but as one of his stronger films, i think there's flaws and an ending that just as immature as anything in Death Proof or Kill Bill. Nolan is not an American director. I'd put Fincher around the same spot as Linklater. One of the good American filmmakers around, but not as great as the ones i listed above.
You haven't seen Prestige or Memento haven't you? It is art, all of his films have an artistic nature the same as PTA or Fincher. He does deserve to be on the list because his blockbuster films at the end of the day deals with: memory, betrayal, chaos, being a symbol, friendship, fear, hate, love, revenge and just the human condition overall. He just hides it in popcorn and explosions which is great.
I actually think he's a little underrated lolz A lot of cinefiles don't generally like him because he doesn't have "esteem." I think it's unfair not to put him up their with the greats.. Have you seen Following?? i do agree that he does garner the populace vote, but i actually think he deserves to be placed in the the category of the greats, he does big budget stuff.. that takes a lot of energy and direction, and he's created one of the most memorable characters ever in cinema. in my opinion
I think people too often assume The Dark Knight and Inception to be Nolan's only movies. Do not forget Memento, a film that many consider to be one of the best of the last decade.
PTA, scorsese, kubrick, fincher. pta and fincher are best modern ones id say but i think andrew dominik is a incredibly talented filmmaker. chopper is greatt and jesse james is a masterpiece
He really has mastered the blockbuster though. Memento was a breakthrough as was the Dark Knight. He falls into a more Spielberg/Ridley Scott sort of field. He's a clever man who aims to entertain a larger audience. If we're going to remember the big names, he certainly should be listed amongst them at least.
Tarantino for sure. A while ago I would've put Cronenberg or Scorsese on the list but although they're still up there as two of my favorites, I can't say I wait impatiently for their new films. As of now it's just PTA & Tarantino.
Nolan is this generation's Spielberg in that he makes intelligent blockbuster, but PTA is this generation's Scorcese in that he is an brilliant auteur. Spielberg while being very good is not in the class of Scorcese. Same thing with Nolan, in that he is not in the same class as PTA.
Valid opinion. IMO Memento is good, and that is it. Kubrick still owns the genre, it's kind of amazing no one has stepped up to the plate and done anything as good.
Is it bad to make entertaining films? When your films happen to be entertaining, does that make them pulp by default? Or when they get big box office scores, are they overrated? The fact that Nolan makes Blockbusters that are both smart and entertaining should feel like a breath of fresh air. I love PTA (he's my favorite active director), but watching only his (and the other directors you mentioned) films is like living on a diet of Kashi. That's why the world needs Nolan as it did Hitchcock.
@theomen84 Shit me too! My 3 are Scorsese(Hopefully Hugo Cabret will be good), Tarantino(Cant wait for Django Unchained) and of course PTA(Cant wait for 'The Master'). What are your 3?
Not really. He is known to be deathly shy and perhaps that's really it. We're not gonna complain about Thomas Pynchon for liking his privacy. If anything, it's pretty special because he's letting the art and only the art speak for itself. If you watch more and more of PTA's later interviews, he certainly seems to be heading in a similar direction.
its not that complicated really. he wasnt wearing the ring and the totem wobbled. end of story. thats not opinion. the kids were wearing different clothes and you see their faces. not to mention his father was included in that scene. and we could go on and on. its really just not that hard to figure out. nolan is the man though. fans just really make some stuff more complicated than it needs to be. have a crack at space odyssey then talk about mind fucking endings.
@cratedigger89 Tarantino for sure. My third was Scorsese but I'm no longer as impatient for his as the other two. Honorable mentions for the third spot would probably be Lynch and Cronenberg.
This is entirely wrong, Just because a director is very popular doesn't make him overrated. He proved that you can make intelligent films that appeal to a large spectrum of people. Nolan's Memento isn't a blockbuster but completely challenge the idea's of film nativities.
PTA, Aronofsky, Nolan. But it's really too hard to say. I would add Fincher, Tarantino, Scorsese, Cianfrance, Cuaron, Rian Johnson, Inarritu, The Duplass Bros. and so many more. *Sigh* Movies.
Magnolia is hands down my favorite movie. I've never been so swept away in a film. Especially, a three hour one.
Currently, mine too.
I've just reviewed it on my channel if you fancy taking a look ;-) I'd be interested in hearing what you think.
He has had a great run as a director. He doesn't churn out films every year, but when he makes one, they are fantastic.
Watch 3:25 under the pretence that these two have just successfully hidden a dead body.
One of the greatest directors ever imo. All his movies are brilliant. (Haven't seen Inherent vice though)
Samuli Hynninen Inherent Vice was great, easily one of my favorite's from him. I want to watch it again actually, and it's only been like a week.
Great movie. I initially thought it was a mess like many others, but then realized, I missed something. Life is a mess. Life does not come together perfectly at the end. People die and things go unresolved. Great movie.
And it comes together in strange way which makes no sense
Anderson is not an all-time favorite of mine, but he is without question one of the greatest directors of my generation. Just having a film like "There Will Be Blood" on your resume would be enough to place you among the best working filmmakers.
RUclipsrs, who are some of your favorite directors? I'm genuinely curious.
i see a lot of director's names here in the comments but the ONLY american filmmaker who really matters these days is Paul Thomas Anderson
Emmm what about Charlie Kaufman, Quentin Tarantino, Darren Aronofsky. Have you heard about them?
One of probably 3 directors who I wait impatiently for their next films. What a master.
Awesome director. Great films.
Word up! I can not wait to the the master's next film, The Master, out in theaters this Friday.
Movies that invoke strong emotions should be considered the best in my opinion, as depressing as they may be...
This film!
One of my favorite filmakers
I've just come here after watching the 1998 interview with Anderson chatting to Mike Figgis with a mouthful of pizza - the difference in his behaviour is massive
My 3: PTA, Wes Anderson, and Terrence Malick.
Lynch, Kubrick, PTA
Favourite current 5: PTA, Nicolas Winding Reft, Darren Aronofsky, Steve McQueen, Scorsese.
charlie rose is amazing. knowing that it's sydney not hard eight. bringing up henry gibson. there is a great interviewer.
The best American filmmakers are PTA and Fincher. Nolan and Tarantino are great too, but they are just not on the same level as those two. And I mean currently, of course.
+Samuli Hynninen The Coen Brothers are at that level too
Christopher Nolan is English
+Samuli Hynninen Fincher is not on the level of PTA, Tarantino, Cianfrance, Coen Brothers imo. Se7en is brilliant, but his last two have been very average to me, not to mention Panic Room and Alien 3 which offer nothing to cinema. same
+Samuli Hynninen Scorsese?
Lost in Translation is a fucking amazing film.
Black Swan wasn't NEARLY as depressing as Requiem
the ending of Swan is sad but Requiem leaves you with a sense of hopelessness
Incredibly moving.
PTA, Tarantino, Kubrick
my 5: PTA, Lynch, Tarantino, Nolan, Aronofsky
I actually think he's a little underrated lolz A lot of cinefiles don't generally like him because he doesn't have "esteem." I think it's unfair not to put him up their with the greats.. Have you seen Following??

in my opinion
PTA met Kubrick?! Boy, what I'd given to be able to witness that conversation.
I think people too often assume The Dark Knight and Inception to be Nolan's only movies. Do not forget Memento, a film that many consider to be one of the best of the last decade.
PTA, Coen Brothers, Sam Mendes
PTA, scorsese, kubrick, fincher. pta and fincher are best modern ones id say but i think andrew dominik is a incredibly talented filmmaker. chopper is greatt and jesse james is a masterpiece
That doesn't mean that one day his films won't reach that capacity. I don't doubt that he can, I just hope he does.
P.T.A., David Fincher and Bruno Dumont
love PTAs laugh. He seems very childish and laid back for a genius film maker.
David Fincher, Steve McQueen, David Fincher, Terrence Malick, David Fincher, Wes Anderson, David Fincher, PT Anderson. Did I mention David Fincher?
Speilbergs work comprises primarily with blocckbusters too. Would you so easily write him off as not being one of the greats because of that too.
@DonRMB Don't forget Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom and David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
they're all there...
Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, Danny Boyle.
mine are Peter Jackson, PT Anderson, annnnnnd lol too many i love that i can't really decide
No one else has said it so I'm gonna do it. Sergio Leone, His last three films must be seen.
Well said! I couldn't agree with you more
PTA is the fucking man.
Tarantino for sure. A while ago I would've put Cronenberg or Scorsese on the list but although they're still up there as two of my favorites, I can't say I wait impatiently for their new films. As of now it's just PTA & Tarantino.
2:24 - this is why I love this film.
PTA, Wes Anderson and Spike Jonze
Nolan is this generation's Spielberg in that he makes intelligent blockbuster, but PTA is this generation's Scorcese in that he is an brilliant auteur. Spielberg while being very good is not in the class of Scorcese. Same thing with Nolan, in that he is not in the same class as PTA.
couldnt agree more, but Memento is brilliant.
Okay, you're right. I forgot David Lynch. Mulholland dr. is one of the best movie ever
Magnolia shows how talented Tom Cruise actually is
Chris Nolan, PTA, Darren Arrenofsky
Valid opinion. IMO Memento is good, and that is it. Kubrick still owns the genre, it's kind of amazing no one has stepped up to the plate and done anything as good.
Nolan, PTAnderson, and Tarantino. (Bonus, David Fincher)
Ford, Welles, Hitchcock
Is it bad to make entertaining films? When your films happen to be entertaining, does that make them pulp by default? Or when they get big box office scores, are they overrated? The fact that Nolan makes Blockbusters that are both smart and entertaining should feel like a breath of fresh air.
I love PTA (he's my favorite active director), but watching only his (and the other directors you mentioned) films is like living on a diet of Kashi. That's why the world needs Nolan as it did Hitchcock.
haha those are my exact picks man and I have to throw David Cronenberg in their. He's still making insane films IMO.
@TheJayObrain I get that same impression too! He seems to talk down to anyone he's interviewing as well.
Who is your 3 best directors?
@DonRMB Tarantino, Nolan, and Arronofsky. I know it's not directed at me.
Terrance Malick, Woody Allen, Paul T Anderson
Sofia Coppola Is Brilliant!!!
Kubrick, Kurosawa, Lean, Scorsese, and PTA
pta..........GOD nuff said
Tarantino, Kubrick, Boyle lol
shit thats hard to argue with.
@theomen84 what a "master".
pun intentional?
240p we meet again.

@theomen84 indeed. So who are the other two?
PTA and Nolan
Peter Jackson, PTA, annnnnnd thats tough, probably the Coen Brothers
PTA,Kubrick, Fincher
dude's a genius,
@cratedigger89 Tarantino for sure. My third was Scorsese but I'm no longer as impatient for his as the other two. Honorable mentions for the third spot would probably be Lynch and Cronenberg.
PTA, Coens, Malick
This is entirely wrong, Just because a director is very popular doesn't make him overrated. He proved that you can make intelligent films that appeal to a large spectrum of people. Nolan's Memento isn't a blockbuster but completely challenge the idea's of film nativities.
PTA, Coen bros, and Tarantino.
@DonRMB P.T Anderson, Wes Anderson, and Steven Soderbergh.
Scorsese, Kubrick, PTA
Scorsese is number 1 for me
PTA, Aronofsky, Nolan. But it's really too hard to say. I would add Fincher, Tarantino, Scorsese, Cianfrance, Cuaron, Rian Johnson, Inarritu, The Duplass Bros. and so many more. *Sigh* Movies.
Also, favorite line of the interview: Philip Seymour Hoffman. Can't be hotter than he is right now. He's in Ripley? And, uhm... something else.
Have you seen Black Swan, or The Wrestler?
he's a big cinefile
umm????????????????? this was "disliked 3 times" that make me sick to my tummy!
no man, it's not just you opinion ;)
it's somehow different, some of Spielberg blockbusters are unique and classic.
don't forget Wes Anderson!
@DonRMB Dude, we have the same top 3..
the next would be Nolan, Fincher, and Cuaron.
Care to say who the 3 are? Besides Anderson, of course.
Is Magnolia PTA at his best ?
Great movie, but probably not his best.
In his own words at the time 'For better or worse, I believe Magnolia is the best film I'll ever make'
Kenny Juto Good thing it wasn't. He's now most proud about making The Master
@@joel8583 honestly emotions that that movie makes you go through its an experiece .. unforgettable film
You forgot to add Martin Scorsese
How is everyone forgetting Darren Aronofsky?
"president of the United States, of movie... land"
Plus Aronofksy and Fincher.
@theVINTAGEfilms WHY?
Tarantino is a fantastic director. Don't speak such silliness.
Because Requiem for a Dream is depressing as HELL...
add Lynch and you have my vote
