I met Elvis at a gas station in Toledo, Ohio when my twin sister & I were 4-years old! My dad got out of the car to talk to a guy in the next lane. Next thing you know, Elvis pops his head in our car, introduces himself, shakes our hands and tells us he's a twin too (he died at birth). That was 1956 and I still remember being "all shook up" and knew who he was being it was his first year of being famous. Impressive man indeed.

What a lucky fellow you are! My father was born month after Elvis passed away. I can only dream to met him, hopefully in the life after this.
He was such a beauty in his young years. No one was cooler than Elvis…He passed on August 16, 1977. Still way too young to lose him.,
Lots of us remember where we were that day, when we heard.
I will never forget I graduated High School that year.
I was 8 years old, so I wasn't really phased by it. It wasn't until I was older that I really understood the significance. But what I do remember at the time it happened was that my older female cousin was inconsolable. That has stuck with me all this time.

I was his friend for years up until his death. No one knew more than Elvis did how much he screwed up, he owned everything that he did in his life he blamed no one but himself for the shape he was in, and the choices he made. Priscilla also owns her part in the ending of their marriage she and i still talk a lot the loss of Lisa broke her. Elvis and i spoke a few times before his death he was the big brother i never had. We both needed a friend and we were that for each other. The memories we made in those short years are locked away in my heart forever. The last time we spoke we cried a lot because we both knew he was living on borrowed time he called me kiddo he said kiddo everything will be ok i said no it wouldn't because you will not be here anymore. He gave me the biggest hug and that sweet smile i will never forget. 3 days later he was gone and i will never get over it. #forevermysexyjello #forevermyking

He was legendary, and he could sing in every genre of music. As huge as he was, he could have been even bigger if Colonel Tom Parker, his manager, hadn’t taken so much from him, including letting him become a serious actor, which he wanted to do, and actually showed signs of having the potential for. His acting in “Love Me Tender”, “Jailhouse Rock”, and “King Creole” (films made earlier in his career) showed real ability. Col. Tom refused to let him make movies he wouldn’t be top star in. He did make some entertaining musical movies through the 60’s, but he really hated doing them eventually.
Yeah, I read, one time, that they wanted Elvis for "A Star is Born" (starring opposite Barbra Streisand, instead of Chris Christofferson), but because Col. Parker wanted top billing for Elvis, and they wouldn't give it to him, the colonel wouldn't let him do it!
Also, Colonel Parker demanded a certain percentage of publishing rights (or something like that) to every song Elvis sang. Elvis wanted, very badly, to sing Dolly Parton's song "I Will Always Love You", but she refused to give up the publishing rights (and rightly so, IMO), so Elvis didn't get to record it.
It was rumored that Elvis never got to tour Europe because Colonel Parker wasn't a U.S. citizen (if he left, he couldn't get back in)....
Colonel Parker has sounded, many times, to me, like a schmuckwad!!!
Yeah and they even try to say Elvis was a racist when it was nobody but the Colonel.. Elvis wasn't racist at all. Like you said the Colonel took so much from Elvis.. As a Black man I always believed that.. There was nobody "Cooler" than Elvis.. Black or White.. (Why thank you very much) LOl!! He used to crack me up when he said that. The Coolest man ever!!!
I also learned after the ELVIS movie that Parker had been in a military jail and was diagnosed as a psychopath. He sucked the life out of Elvis until he died and then still tried to do it off his estate until he was finally exposed for his financial abuse of ELVIS.

I was almost 9 when he died. My family was at a remote church camp in Georgia and somehow the news got to us there. My dad was devastated, it’s about the only time I ever saw him cry.
To put it in some context, the early 1950's had the likes of Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, and the like...then THIS happened!!! It was world changing...

My Grandpa met Elvis at a small “club” before he took off. He sat and visited with my Grandpa between his sets. My Grandpa said Elvis was kind and was pleasantly surprised that people were staying to hear him sing, Very appreciative for the audience.
That's a great story Amy. I've heard others say he was a very humble and kind person. When my mother was a teen or just out of high school, she said Elvis hung out with her group of friends. He wasn't a close friend, but one of the acquaintances that ran around with her friends. He spent some time in Texas, I think it was around 1955.
My Grandma met him when he was shooting Blue Hawaii. He was staying at the Coco Plams Resort on Kauai where my Grandma worked as a maid. She said he was so sweet and humble and would talk story with them and asking how they were doing. He treated everyone regardless of their station with so much kindness.
The same Rlvis later on went to. Richard, Tricky Dicky, Nixon to set up John Lennon be expelled from the country because he was jealous of the Beatles !Drug addict and not so nice s guy!

As far as I know, he was a truck driver, and in 1954, went to a studio to record songs for his mother for her birthday. He happened to record them at Sun Records in Memphis. He became a sensation after his first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show in 1956. And as they say, the rest is history... As Ed would say, that was a really big 'shoo'.
When I was in high school, I had the fortune to get to know a man who had retired after 50 years working on stage crews in Columbus Ohio. He was volunteering his time to teach us all about working on a stage. The best part was his stories of what various performers were like back stage. He told us that Elvis one of the few performers who would come out of his dressing room, grab a chair and talk with the stage crew as one of the guys. He had so much respect from everyone.
He didn’t forget his humble roots, that’s why (unlike some other performers).

He broke out in 1954 with a song “That’s All Right “ that he recorded at Sun Records owned by Sam Phillips who also found Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison,Carl Perkins! Along with legends like B.B.King and Howlin Wolf recording their also! Elvis then signed with RCA in 55 and the rest is history!!!

There have so many Elvis movie bios. Just recently a new movie bio came out in theaters called ELVIS this passed August 2022.

I remember seeing him on the Louisiana Hayride in 1954, when he first started out. He was allowed his moves. I was a young kid with teenage siblings. Thankfully, both of our parents loved Elvis, so his music was welcomed in our house, unlike many other families at the time. You said he changed the sound of R&R. True, and he definitely made it a visual experience.
His first record was My Happiness in 1953.

Watching your reaction to his music is proof of the amount of joy he brought (and still does) to so many. There is a lot of emphasis on how women and young girls reacted to him but he affected many people on a deeper level. His music and moves just make me happy. I just feel joy when listening to him.

Blue Suede Shoes is a cover...i prefer the Carl Perkins version. Having said that, J&A could choose about 70 different songs and they would all be good options where Elvis is concerned.

I adore music, it's gotten me through so much in my life. But the day Elvis died my Mother was in hysterics. The news also told me this was not uncommon. I didn't understand that kind of hero worship for a musician. She mourned his passing every year until her death. We listened to Elvis among many others throughout our childhood

I'm always amazed at what our younger generation has not heard.
I am born in the 80s, but grown up with elvis, the everley brothers and al the old good stuf❤ and i am so thankfull too my parents that they did this for my! 60s 70s and 80s music are the best ! And now my kids grow up with that music, and they loving it when i see my 7 year old song dancing on Elvis songs , my heart is melting ❤
He was a true entertainer, not many left these days and a very humble person (as humble as one can be with the crowds of people that would rush him especially in the early days). My grandmother was walking in a casino in Las Vegas and she seen him with his entourage walking from one of his shows. She said hello and while he didn't sit down and talk to her or anything he at least stopped turned around said hello and shook her hand. That really speaks a lot to one's character. No matter how bad his health got in the later years his voice never failed him...wow.
Imagine - this year in January he'd have been 86 - and all his fans have never left him.

I still get a kick how most people do not realize that this song is about guys having sex in prison..."rock -n- roll" was slang for sex in the black community back in the 50s and Elvis knew this as he grew up in that culture. When he answered the question "What kind of music is this" he answered with "Its LIKE rock-n-roll baby". He was saying the music was like sex, and that is how the genre got its name, with Elvis's answer by people that had no idea what he was saying.

My 86yr old aunt has dementia and the only thing she remembers with any clarity is ELVIS! We play her his songs Lal the time cause they make her so happy. Suspicious Minds is my all-time favourite.

The "1968 Comeback Special" is PEAK cool Elvis - he just oooozed charisma. I would recommend any song from that special, but especially the first one, Heartbreak Hotel.

Elvis burst on the world stage on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1956 singing Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel, Love Me Tender and Reddy Teddy and others. It was seen by 86% of the national TV audience. Everyone was eager to see what he was like. There were so many great Elvis songs in the 50's and 60's and he made 31 feature films where he sang his current hits.

Elvis died Aug. 16, 1977. I was fixing to turn 16 and I went into hysterics when they interrupted my tv show to announce he'd passed away. 5 minutes later my mom had joined me.
For more of his iconic dance moves check him out live in Vegas in 1970 performing Suspicious Minds or Polk Salad Annie. The only reason Vegas has huge artists performing there every night is because of what Elvis brought to Vegas. Frank Sinatra may have worked in Vegas but Elvis made it THE destination to see past and present big name music stars perform nightly.
How Elvis was discovered is a long and involved story that, when it comes down to it, was due to his persistence and another man's fascination with finding a white artist with a feel for 'black' music. If Sam Phillips was trying to find a white artist with a feel for black music, it’s really weird that he was having him record ballads and that Elvis himself started playing That’s All Right Mama” during a break. Much of the mythical history has been debunked, but it’s hard to overcome the folklore version.

@@JonBurrows3577 it's been a long time since I watched any of the documentaries or read any of the biographical books and articles from back then so I don't remember specifics any more.
I do stand by my statement that Elvis' perseverance through all the rejection and naysayers was the biggest reason he succeeded.
I was 6 years old when Elvis died and i still remembered it. Like a wave of sadness swept the world. Huge respect for him, I realized how amazingly exceptional he was in my later years. He truly was a phenomenal being, so talented and gorgeous.

The 1977 death of Elvis was the first time that I, as a young child had experienced hearing the news of a national tragedy. I wasn't born when President Kennedy was assassinated. I have flashes of memories hearing about the Watergate scandal & President Nixon's resignation on TV. But when you're a little kid, you don't realize the magnitude of the news you're hearing. You are in your own little bubble world. Elvis' passing was the first time that I witnessed the entire country in shock & mourning. I was 10 yrs old & can still clearly remember that day - mom was cleaning house, she had the radio on & when the DJ made the announcement, she & my aunt started cry-yelling (wailing as if in physical pain). It kind of scared me to see that strong of an emotional reaction, that seemingly came out of nowhere. My uncle turned on the TV & it was being broadcasted on every channel. I remember going outside, seeing my neighbors gathering on the streets, going to my friends' houses & seeing their parents crying... It was awful. The only other time I experienced a celebrity death which affected me on a personal level was Robin Williams' suicide in 2014.

"Suspicious Minds" (live in Las Vegas) is good representation of Elvis having fun in the 70s.
Elvis died on August 16, 1977. I was learning to drive and had driven myself, my Mama and my little brother to get a snow cone. When I came back to the car with our snow cones, my Mama told me the devastating news she had just heard on the radio. Elvis was my cousin, his Mama and my great grandmother were first cousins. My family, like his, was terribly poor living in Tupelo, Mississippi. I have a rescue dog who came with the name Elvis. I always thought that he was given that name because he has one blue eye. However, not long after adopting him, I discovered that he probably got his name BECAUSE HE CAN SING!!! And since the more famous Elvis was my cousin, my Elvis has the hashtag #cousinelvis.
"A Little Less Conversation" is a great rocker by Elvis. Remix version is even better, IMO. I hope you get a chance to react to it.
A later Elvis tune, and not quite as dancy, is "Suspicious Minds." I'd love to see your reaction to it.

I second the vote for "Black Velvet" by Alannah Myles! “Mama’s dancin’ with baby on her shoulder. The sun is settin’ like molasses in the sky.” It was a huge hit for her, and really a shame she didn't have more. Released back in 1990.

Elvis was such a heartthrob that they got him to do several musical movies just to showcase his songs. But he actually was a pretty good actor too. I think this video is from one of his movies so those aren’t the moves they wouldn’t show. Today of course his moves wouldn’t raise any eyebrows but saying his gyrations were outlawed sold tickets.

I remember my Mom crying when we heard that Elvis died in 1977. We were on a family vacation and were waiting out a rain storm at a restaurant when the news came over the radio.
You hear stories of how generous he could be. My favorite was him taking a limo ride and asking the driver if he just drove the limo or owned it. When the driver said he was just a driver, Elvis bought the limo and gave it to the driver so he could be his own boss.
Elvis' death was one of the few where I knew exactly where I was and what I was doing at the time: 16 years old, playing pinball (a table called Aladdin's Castle by Bally, built in 1976); I was about 1,000 points from a free game credit, third and final ball, and the news came over the radio in the background at the arcade (one of the ceiling speakers was right above my head) -- my mind blanked out and the ball went down the middle bouncing off the flippers and out of play. Elvis was a bit of an overweight Vegas punchline during that time, but his death hit me hard having grown up with his earlier music.
Elvis was the King Of Rock & Roll for a reason! He was discovered when he walked into Sun Records to record a record for his Mama for her birthday... the rest is History.

My Nanna was a big Elvis fan, and she really really loved his gospel music too. Her favourite of his gospel songs was How Great Thou Art, so much so that we played it at her funeral.

This is the way to remember Elvis. He wasn't a saint. He shouldn't be cried over. He was just the coolest dude on the block! Even to this day, there is no one cooler than Elvis. And, I know this is the way his daughter wanted people to remember him.
What is interesting is Elvis went into the army the following year. Elvis Aron Presley entered the United States Army at Memphis, Tennessee, on March 24, 1958, and then spent three days at the Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, Reception Station. He left active duty at Fort Dix, New Jersey, on March 5, 1960, and received his discharge from the Army Reserve on March 23, 1964.
I'm a Memphian so I grew up hearing all about Elvis. My Mom LOVED him! I actually saw him in concert but I was only 3. I heard so many stories going to Elvis week celebrations - guys he hung out with said that he was so beautiful that women and men literally threw themselves at him. And that he would sing at the piano after concerts for hours! He loved gospel music.

This was actually a scene from the movie appropriately called “Jailhouse Rock” that was released in 1957. Elvis starred in the movie and was paid $250,000 and 50% royalties. A ton of money in them days. An eerie fact relating to the movie: the female star Judy Tyler died a few days before the premiere of the movie. Elvis was devastated by this and refuse to watch the film.

Elvis was my first concert. My mom was a HUGE fan, so my dad took us to one of his concerts. I was like 7 or 10 at the time. My mom cried when she heard that Elvis had died.

I toured Graceland ten years ago and they said Elvis still always had flowers on his grave as they're sent from all over the world.
