This Song was about their pain and anger over losing a band member to overdose. After losing a band member, corey taylor said Paul Dedrick Gray was the Soul of Slipknot. They are also facing their fears. People think they do it all for shock value but there is deep, honest and truths meanings behind the songs.
The song is about fighting the war within yourself. Accepting your past fears and past things that eat away at you and overcoming it while moving on with your life. Hence them showing their worst fears killing them but also showing their new masks and members

I have also heard that the self destruction and all of its symbolism in this video have a lot to do with the entire band separating with the past, and destroying their own selves to become a stronger whole in the future with the new band members. After this video was when they debuted the new masks for the next phase.

Glad they've been able to stay together this long too. Can't imagine a world and music without Slipknot involved in it lol

I'm in the same place at 47. Started listening to metal at 13. Still love metal as much today as I ever have. Slipknot never made my playlist. I like a few of the songs, but my 16 year old son LOVES Slipknot.

Little long explanation of what the song means, but I've done lots of research. The meaning behind the song and video is actually quite deep/beautiful in a sense. Gonna break it done in points numbered below.
1. The song is about getting over the devil within themselves(ourselves), moving forward away from our past demons.
2. Each band member chose their own way to die that was significant to them (some chose worst fears, some chose meaning)
3. When each band member died, they had on the mask from the previous album and moved forward in the new mask, representing their overcoming of the past demons, moving forward as a new person
3. Sid (aka - DJ Starscream) chose to cannibalize his fingers because as a DJ, his hands/fingers are most significant to his craft
4. Mick chose to rip his face apart and make himself disappear as that is how he sometimes feels even as a big man, invisible and insignificant
5. Corey chose to blow up himself, exploding his head too. Most front men for bands end up with a big head and he was symbolizing how he wants to stay grounded
6. Jim chose to blow up his body as he couldn't imagine a worse way to die
7. Chris chose crows because he is afraid of birds
8. Craig chose a dog because the dog is great
9. Clown chose hanging himself and burning himself because when he leaves this world, f*ck it, it's on everyone else to pick up the pieces (he directed and came up with the concept behind this video. He is the mastermind behind the whole masks/gimmick).
10. The 2 guys in red represent the 2 members no longer in the band (Paul died of an overdose and Joey left the band due to health issues)
11. Slipknot fans are referred to as maggots. The people writhing/wiggling in the background ground represent the maggots with them on their journey
12. And last is the 2 guys getting shanked. Those are the 2 new band members that replaced the guys no longer in the band. Them being murdered by the other band members is symbolic of them being initiated into the band/family. You don't even see them in the video playing music until after they are initiated.
Hope you keep going down the Slipknot rabbit hole. Their lyrics and musicianship are insane. Pretty much, no 2 songs are alike. Enjoy the ride.
I agree with Lex..this is beautiful! Seeing the beauty though the music in this way takes time for some. People always gave me a lot of crap for the bands I listened to growing up. Now they are starting to get it by taking the time to really listen and throw away the stereotypes. It's so refreshing and gives me hope for more future metal heads🤣🤟

After binge watching a lot of your guys’ videos I think the fun in them is watching Brad listen to the songs with his head and Lex listen to them with her heart. They reach similar conclusions but in their own way. Which is what music is all about.

@@administrador1626 - It depends upon the song. They are unique. They have some very heavy songs though. Pretty much everything Watershed and earlier has some heavy tracks. The newer stuff is more like 60s - 80s prog rock with better sound and production.

saw them again at San Bernadino fairgrounds and the band before them was... SLAYER. so the pit got big, trash cans got set on fire, then the pit started throwing the cans around. When SlipKnot finally came on the crowd was burnt out, so the band called us all out. Middle of the show Clowns drums got unscrewed from the stage so he just started tossing them around, hitting corey and sid. By the time the show was over I saw a poor asian lady whos jaw had been broken, not lying at all, it was half off to one side. I'm 17, IDK what the hell to do so I just went deer. Then I ran and jumped in the shallow lake they had at the fair grounds when the show was over.
I love hearing your take on the meaning of the song. I've been a Slipknot fan since '99 and relate to so many of their songs, whether it be mental health, relationships, etc. Definitely subscribing!

In my opinion, metal is the type of genre you have to build up to. When I was young, I was super into classic rock. Over time I gradually built up to punk rock, green day mostly, then I moved to hard rock, system of a down mostly, and a bit of trap metal. Once I found Slipknot I was used to a bit harder of a style, so I loved it and haven’t looked back!

It's also a change of the masks. The old masks are the suicides, but you see the new masks for that album as well, with the exception of the them two new members of the band who wear the same masks are are "baptized" into the band by being killed by the old band members instead of committing suicide.
Lex is exactly what this music is about, don't get me wrong i love all kinds of music, i can literally listen to most anything (apart from maybe jazz LOL) but this kind of music brings out the DEVIL in I lol so to speak but not in a bad way more in like a crazy inner demon stress release kind of way. Who knows really good reactions guys!
1999 at Ozzfest they were just moved to the first stage (although not noted on the actual line up, not sure why and can’t remember which band they replaced the day I went) I remember the masks and I was going to not watch them but my husband said they have a unique sound and are going places! It’s was great! Had my tickets to their show last May which was canceled because of f/n Covid.
This is one of my favorite Knot songs. R.I.P. Joey. The world has lost one of the greatest drummers ever.
