@@timon7095, I flew only once on a 757 (DFW-MIA on American Airlines) and HATED it. That very long single aisle felt oppressive and claustrophobic (too many people in a narrow space), it made service more difficult, there were too few lavatories with long lines that further congested the aisle. All in all, a very stressful experience. It was just a 2:30-hour flight but I arrived tired as if I had flown 10 hours.

I was wondering when you were going to take the A220 Dubai-Riga plunge... Thankfully my aviation fan prayers have been answered. As a Canuck, I love the A220 and all its quirky glory. I also love the fact it was designed originally as a plane that could fly Trans-Atlantic yet operate out of London City. As an Albertan taxpayer and partial/fractional owner of the airport as such I think it's neat that such a versatile jet exists to serve previously unthinkable routes due to its almost STOL-like capabilities... I think if you compare it directly to the Q400 it only needs like 500' more feet to take off and land on yet the range is 3X that while having 1/4th the noise footprint... Talk about major improvements in engine and body technology in 25 years!

The longest flight on a true regional jet I've ever done was only about two, two and a half hours from Fargo to Salt Lake City, on a CRJ-900. For longer narrowbody flights, I've also done 6 hours on an Alaska 737-800 from Phoenix to Anchorage, and 7 hours on a US Airways 757-200 from Philadelphia to Glasgow

  • @mikeporecki9946

I’ve done Eastern Europe to Dubai on narrowbodies (737) with FlyDubai or Lot, and on widebodies of Emirates. I guess a regional jet would actually be my second choice after the widebody. Cause sure they have less room, but 2-2 seats more than make up for the 3-3 seats, especially when traveling as I usually do, with my significant other. Not sitting with a stranger is always great, so I loge getting Embraers (my local airlines mainly have those) on 1-3 hour flights, instead of 737s. I think that would still hold on a 7h. Both mean less comfort than a widebody, but the regional ones mean sitting alone, no strangers, no problems with going to the toilet etc.

I’m not sure if I would consider an A220 a regional jet. It has better range than a Boeing 737-700/800 and rivals if not exceeds the range on a MAX. It’s just a smaller manline jet and from what I hear and see, it’s a very comfortable and well designed aircraft. I would consider it a joy to fly on it 🙂🙂

Never took another private taxi or car again after that... The janky 747 Bus route which provides the 6 mile gap between the airport and the end of the LRT for now is FINNNNNNNNNNEEEE. Got great, but good enough for the $5 it costs and 30 minutes it takes... Especially since traffic in the area is notoriously crowded anyway. Driving in on the freeway can take 3 times that in rush hour and is a 6-8 lane expressway...

Great vid! The A220 is really not an RJ in the classic sense. It’s a five-abreast, narrow-body jet with over 100 seats (between 108 and 160 depending on type) and is considered a mainline aircraft. It’s essentially a “crossover,” though I’ve seen some airlines refer to it as “regional.” Some semantics but compared to many bona fide RJs - Embraers, CRJs, etc. - with two-two seating, this is on the larger size.

It's in the range of the smallest 737s, I consider it, along with the E195, as in that class. I actually prefer the E195 over most other narrow bodies, it's quiet, and being 2 2 seating makes it more amenable to my family (vs the 3-3 that the 737/A320 class).

Holy crap! The Maharaba lounge just reminded me of something! Story time! In February I was flying home from Australia to Sweden with Singapore Airlines. On the flight from Singapore to London, about halfway, a lady had a medical emergency. We were forced to make an emergency landing in Dubai. The lady was taken off the plane and we refuelled and all, but when it was time for us to get on our way again, ATC straight up just rejected us. The pilot said over the speakers that "uhh ladies and gentlemen. The uhh air traffic control has rejected our flightplan without reason. We will try again in a while, but if we don't get moving soon enough, we're gonna be forced to stay here until tomorrow." At this point, it was 4 AM ish in Dubai. Then, the pilot said "We will not be able to continue so we are stuck here for the day." The crew then made sure we got off the plane (A380) and told us to go through the airport and look for the Maharaba lounge and that's where buses will take us to hotels. I found a few people to stick together (I call them my Dubai Family) and we tried to work everything out. We were offered a free McChicken at McDonalds using our boarding card.
We eventually found the Maharaba lounge and finally got on buses. Because there were so many passengers, they had to split us all into 9 different hotels. Me and my Dubai Family told the people who worked there that we wanted to stay at the same hotel, because we had grown somewhat close to each other at that point. We were transported to the Crown Plaza I think and were immediately greeted with a lunch buffet. Me and my Dubai Fam said that we'd all go to our separate rooms and shower before meeting back there to eat. And so we did. We sat there talking and had a really lovely lunch together! At that point it was just past 2 pm in the afternoon, so it had taken us 10 hours since landing to get to the hotels. We were all exhausted and hungry, but also weirdly content with our situation.
After lunch, we all went to our own rooms again and while the others were napping, I had to head out into Dubai to buy new underwear and deodorant because they didn't remove any of our luggage from the plane. At around 7 pm, the dinner buffet was in full swing and we had decided over a WhatsApp group to meet outside the food place just past 7. We then had another lovely meal together, with fantastic food and drinks and conversations. We were then informed that the plane to London was going to depart at 6 or 7 AM the next morning, and that our wakeup call would be at 2 AM, to give us plenty of time at the airport.
2 AM rolls around and we all get woken up. I shower and get dressed and everything before heading downstairs to check out. I was quickly followed by my Dubai Fam. We get escorted onto buses that take us to the airport (sidenote: Someone had been partying that night and was very hard to wake up so we left a bit later than anticipated). Once at the airport, we check in and make our way to McDonalds again, where another McChicken was offered as breakfast.
At 6:30 or 5:30, we get to the gate where everyone else from the plane is waiting for boarding. However, something else happens. An airport employee gets on the intercom and says "We apologise for the inconvenience but there is heavy fog rolling in and no planes can take off or land. We are postponing your flight. It now leaves at 9 AM, instead of 6 or 7." At this point, all we can do is laugh because of how odd this all is. So my Dubai Dad (A gentleman in his 40's or 50's) suggest that we just go to a pub for a pint of beer. Not having any better ideas, we agree and head to the nearest pub, AT 7 AM!!!! We then get something to drink (I get just a mocktail or something because I don't drink) and something to snack on. We sit there for like 2 hours just talking. Then, when it's time for us to leave, Dubai Dad offers to pay for the drinks and stuff. We gladly accept and then head to the gate.
Finally, we were gonna take off. They put us on buses that take us out to the remote stand and board as usual. It's pretty fast because everyone is in the same seats as before. At roughly 9:30 AM, we take off and make our way to London. And the rest is history.
It was a really fun time. I love my Dubai Fam :,). Memories for life!

If you happen to get a free row of seats you can make a "bed" as well (I did not see if they gave you pillow and blanket on this flight as they usually do).
To address the two big issues, currently airBaltic is: 1) going to roll out Starlink wifi across all fleet - hopefully from this year - which is going to be free for everyone 2) new planes will have the latests Recaro R2 seats with Usb-c charging port.

..view of the Arabian Sea??..Where are you😂😂..You mean the Persian Gulf I assume! Over 7 hours in a substandard Euro Biz Class seat. Revolting! 😬 No IFE! Are you flying Biz Class or LCC? The lady behind is so funny, you are giving her the entertainment which is lacking. At least you had decent meals but pretty basic for a Biz product. I know they have quite competitive prices ex EU to DXB but with that product..no thank you!

Excellent! Love AirBaltic especially on such a long flight from Dubai 🇦🇪 to Riga 🇱🇻 especially on AirBaltic! The A220 is also SO MUCH MORE than just a “regional jet” that term is kinda demeaning ESPECIALLY to the FAB and larger A220-300 😅
Cheers 🥂 mate! I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT I can’t wait to fly them on their now ALL A220 fleet the only airline in the world to have an ALL A220 fleet… So far that is! However I will say if I booked Business Class on Emirates 🇦🇪 ESPECIALLY A CASH FARE and was then told it’d be Air Baltic on the A220 not an Emirates 777-300ER Business Class I WOULD BE MAD! 😡 😂
See you at Oshkosh 2024 mate!

$1400 is very steep for a flight with no dedicated business class and no IFE. Air Baltic is not good value for the money. I'd fly them on a short-haul flight to Tallinn or Warsaw or Frankfurt, but never all the way to Dubai.

The A220 is not like a CRJ or an ERJ. Its actually more comfortable than an A320 or 737 because of the 2-3 configuration. I’d rather fly on an A220 vs a 737. Id never say the same for a CRJ.

The A220 and the bigger new Embraer E-Jets feel less like a regional jet and more like a mainline jet and are often used on mainline flights. I'd say they're all even more comfortable than 737/A320's.

The A220 isn't really a "regional jet". It is more like the wonderful MD-80s, especially with its 2-3 seat configuration. I flew one on Air Canada from Dulles to Toronto and absolutely loved it. Hope to get to fly one again real soon.

  • @jfmezei
    @jfmezei 3 месяца назад

The range of the A220 would exclude it as a "regional jet", though it can be used for shorter hops. No different really than the A321 LR that can do translatoantic, or a 1-2 hour flight. In the end, it is all about whether the airine has outfitted the cabin for long or commuter flights. Not having plugs or entertainment means it's been configured to do shorter flights.
If you look at where they fly, Dubai and Teneriffe are more an exception in terns of length with vast majprity of cities served being in continental europe. Seat Guru says Air Baltic seat width is 18.5 inches which is better than what long haul wide bodies have post densification (9 across for 787 and 10 across for 777).
Note that in North America "regional jet" has union significance as regional division of airlines are not allowed to fly this plane and the A220 is too big and must be flown by the mainline carrier. (scope clauses).

After my flight to Switzerland back in 2009 (on SwissAir) I leaned my lesson to just bring your own movies/TV shows on a mobile device (they had issues with the IFE system and it was a 10 hour flight home -- on the way there it worked fine, but not on the way home). Luckily I had a laptop though so I was able to at least do something. So yeah, bring your own entertainment and a battery pack to keep your stuff charged (plus even if the IFE works who knows if there is anything good on). Same with snacks - I also bring snacks on planes too now that TSA allows this (since COVID).

Longest flight I’ve done on a small(ish) aircraft was Pristina-Casement Aerodrome (West of Dublin)on a chartered 737. Repatriation flight in the military. Took us almost 8hrs due to a strong headwind and of course they put myself (I’m very broad) and the two other biggest lads in the same row with no spare seats to swap to. Spent the flight leaning into the aisle 🥵🥵🥵. No in flight entertainment there either . Can’t remember if we had rations 🤔

I hope that air baltic will get bigger jets in future, I flew about month ago Helsinki-Riga-Rome route and that riga to rome was enough for me and just only 3hours.. Not gonna lie when I saw the tittle of the video I was expecting like a CRJ. Anywho the longest A220 flight I’ve taken was with Air Canada. Toronto to Aruba and Toronto Seattle. Both around 5-6 hours. I wouldn’t call it a regional jet but the A220 certainly has an insane range.

Air Canada frequently uses A220s and Max8s from SFO-YYZ/YUL. Not 7 hours, but a westbound flight from YUL-SFO is pretty close.
In economy, I'd take the A220 all day every day. In business, the Max8 has more space and would generally be my preference except AC's Max business class seats suck. The A220 also has less claustrophobic bathrooms. (Also AC has wifi on the A220 but not the max)
Euro business on a 7 hour flight is a damn shame though.

I infinitely prefer the CRJ7/9 and ERJ170-190 RJs to anything else in coach, and US domestic first class is generally as good or better in them as well. No middle seats, big windows, and scope clauses in the US usually mean they have more legroom than the mainline airplanes. Other than up front, I have never gotten the appeal of widebodies - too many people getting on and off, not enough lavs, etc.
An A220 is not a regional jet, it's as big as most DC-9s/A319/smaller 737s. European "business class" is hilariously terrible. BTDT on KLM.
