This is heaven! Pro Tip: If you're really serious about picking up one of these filters like I am, screenshot every image, bring it all into Photoshop, label everything accordingly and A-B like a MF-er. Really it's the only way to compare. Some of the filters are so similar you can barely tell after 5 A-Bs. It's 100% impossible to compare by memory.
Thank you, a lot of careful work went into this and it's super helpful in choosing between the subtlety of filters without having access to all of them.
What a great comparison. Could you explain the difference between Black Glimmer Glass and Black Satin? Having a hard time discerning the difference from the descriptions
Great presentation of the various Tiffen filters. I must confess that halfway through the video; that the narrator does sound a bit like the voice of the geico commercials. I think I have a bit of comparison re-watching to do...lol.
Glimmer Glass ! My go to for Video Interviews for mental health professionals (some of which are Doctors.) Not overly atmospheric or loss of any details. Over 2 years straight and as of yet I have not received any complaints! I'll have to get the complete set this Spring ✓✓
@@WilfredFumblyI would honestly go with 1/4 which in practice is about a 15-20% difference. Slight but not overbearing. It definitely softens a bit of the rough textures of the face without losing detail.
I think satin and black satin have a subtlety that makes them the most useable. Most of the others were too much unless you are going for old school beauty shot or dream like image. I need to find a place to rent them before I buy....
Do you recommend increasing strength to 1/4 for between 24-35mm lenses if I’m using 1/8 on my 50mm and up? I’m not super concerned about the halation being a bit different, but different softness of skin tones would bother me..
Ahh I am just curious about the Promist 1 nd 2 close ups but sadly you forgot to add. :( But overall I saw this filter in a different video and damn I need this filter to my KIT. I am a vintage photo and videographer. And this is absolutely my style!
Had a similar issue. Not sure if you purchased the Pro Mist 1 or 2., but I'll throw them on my lens tomorrow and let you know how they work at portraits distance.
I can't decide whether to get Satin 1 or Satin 2... I'm wondering if Satin 1 will make enough of a difference... And on the other hand, I'm wondering if Satin 2 would make too much of a difference. Did either of you purchase a Satin filter? Thanks
I've noticed that Black Pro Mist 1/4 increases noise in the shadows - could it be due to hallation? I'm considering changing it to Glimmer Glass 1/2, any advice on this move? I'd really appreciate it, as there is nowhere to rent them in my area.
Neither does Amazon. If you use a combination of both, hopefully you can find what you're looking for. But yeah, it would be cool to have a place where they are all available.
I went to the store but I haven’t figured out how to search for what I want and buy it. All the information is available, I just can’t figure out how to give them my money.
Allot of work in one video. I never realy understood why I would use these filters in my shots as they visualy degrade the picture and most of the intended effects could be done in post as well. Now I see that there are certain situations where you would want to use them. But still I feel like this is a bit of a Stockholm effect. Back in the good old days when we were fighting for a cleaner image all the time... you know what I mean.
Some effects cant be reproduced, you can only mimic those effects using postprocess, but to really mimic those effects, you need to see them first to be able to understand how to mimic them in a proper way. For example a CPL filter, most of the people know then because they remove reflections from the glass etc.. But in the very same way they remove reflections from other surfaces, for example leaves in the forest, lets say after the rain when the leaves are still wet and they reflect some sunlight, the CPL filter removes that and brings in the very saturated green color. You simply can not replicate that in Post. As for these filters, for example Glimmerglass, it spreads the light from harsh light sources to the shadow area , softens the shadows to the noticeable level, maybe we could do that in post, but I believe using this filer we can recover more details from those shadow areas in Post it should also alter the level of noise, soften the grainy effect a little. Another thing highlights... There is just different way the light drops on to the sensor and that gives the different result. Maybe you can replicate that in post, but to replicate it properly, you will need to play around quite a lot and make sure not to make it unrealistic

Thank you so much for doing this video. I was looking for these comparisons along with examples of the effects on different skin tones.
Very thorough video.
However, I was disappointed that the Tiffen Black Pro Mist #3 soft focus filter was not included.
Digital FX seems to be a fantastic choice for portrait photography.

Stylistically if you wanted a more noticeable difference then the 1/2 would be my alternative starting point.
Lovely experience & explain
I'm assuming that the WB was set with no filter then the filters were added and caused a slight green shift?
Amazing video! Really appreciate a company making this detailed a video about their products. Going to pick up the pro mist 😄

C which one did you get? I’m torn between black promist 1/4 and black satin 1 or 2.
C it’s sad to hear you’re not satisfied. What makes you not like it? I’ll use it for video with my Lumix G85.

When they are doing the soft fx and BPM are they stacking? Or is there a filter with both of them together?

Which filter is good for giving a editorial skin look (smooth skin, but not blurry)
and maybe also enhances dark skin tones
i'd say glimmerglass 1 or black pro mist 1/8
I have just seen the same filter a couple of time or what ?
Thank you!

Definitely a stronger halation around the bright areas and light with glimmerglass and better contrast control than black pro mist.
