What filters do you use if any??? I bet a few people are gonna be buying Black Satins 😂
I don't use any at the moment, never too sure what one I need, or if I need one!
Mckinnons
Tiffen black mist Pro 1/8 is my favourite for music videos!
I’m using a variable ND filter with a built in 1/4 pro mist on my Sirui anamorphic lenses. A bit strong bloom, but feels quite organic. I was also going for a more The Batman look. Tired of over sharpened video looks as well. Btw don’t tell anyone I use this on a GH6😜
I really love the Hollywood Black Magic 1/8. I think it's also more subtle than a Black Promist. If I want an even stronger Vintage Look I add Halation And Glow in Davinci Resolve:)
theres a very sharp white noise that hurts my ears around the 5 min mark. i heared it twice now. (every time when you do the no filter/with filter)
I thought I the only can hear it...
It happens every time the transition into the split screen comparison comes up
it made me turn off the video.
@@burgunbeerd same
its really annoying way too sharp
There's a bad sound glitch whenever those side-by-sides slide in... :/
Yes it was very bad I could not finish the video hopefully he fixes it
it was quite annoying, i was wondering was it deliberate
@@andyjamesryan It _has_ to be a glitch
Great content! Love watching stuff like this! There is something weird happening with the whooshes during the side by sides that sound like a white noise glitch.
Yeah and it’s too loud, it wasn’t pleasant for my ears
Yes it was annoying
Probably need to try DaVinci
oh man i totally thought it was my speakers or something lol
Yes, I thought my headphones were dying or something. Wasn't awesome 😅
In case anyone wanted to know (like I did) Matti uses the Black Satin 1/2 you can see it for about a single frame at 7:01 when he's turning the step-up rings.
Haha thank you! Was wondering the exact same thing.
Yessss. Thank you!
Live saver!
Great video. The Black Satin is one of my favorite filters.
Something got messed up in your edit. I think a swoosh sound effect wasn’t properly linked or was corrupted. Every time the comparison images pop in there is an awful glitchy white noise sound.
Or maybe using a MOGRT and didn’t disable the audio? Either way. Solid video.
I was like is that my computer 😳
What Strength Black Satin do you use?
@@worldbynath. I thought the same thing. Like "aw crap, gonna have to drop some more $$ on fixing this noise."
I heard this too... another Premiere Pro bug? 😅
@@BellHarrington I have the 1/8 now, but I had the 1/2 for a while. Traded it for a Pro Mist 1/4. The 1/2 was a little much for me. I do want to try out the 1/4 Black Satin. Just a little more oomph.
Matti- what level of Black Satin are you typically running?
I LOVE Tiffen filters. Old school film photographer since back in the day and I'd use coloured filters for black and white photography. Tiffen make gorgeous filters!
hey Matt is it too late to get epidemic sound trial for 6 months if I buy a whole year? I'm ready to find a program, the ncs app has ran its course
Another great video Matti! As a solopreneur DP/cinematographer here in San Diego CA, one of the ways I get motivated and stay inspired is by watching your channel! Thanks for always keeping it positive and inspiring! :)
Great video! So many are about photoshopping and digitally modifying imagery. It's great to hear a case being made to do the work in camera.
Crazy you posted this today, I was literally taking apart my Rokinon 35mm f1.4 yesterday to modify elements for more character!
Love watching your vids Matti , I laugh every time with you!
Hey Matti, what grade of Black Satin do you use?
Eco Flow is amazing. Took the same model an solar panels to a 5 day camping music festival and it was a game changer!
Hey Matti, thanks for the video, what’s the version of the Black Satin you use ? 1/8, 1/4?
Did anyone find out?
Thank you Matti for the video!
Been waiting for this one
Hi Matti, thanks for sharing you insights on making footage look more organic with filters on your lens.
While this might be a quick solution for some, I feel this is not the ideal way because it tries to 'emulate' an effect that takes place in the different emulsion layers of traditional film material - and not in front of the camera. As an alternative to using some of those filters, I would recommend the following:
A) Never overexpose beyond your sensor's dynamic headroom
B) For nicer highlight rolloff in general, use the Arri Alexa color space in your editing timeline - ist gorgeous what the difference is - at least in DR
C) For this little glow around light sources, use the effect halation or build your own one (what I did)
Love the look on the black pro mist 1/8. The satin one is pretty neat too!
Hey Matti, I’m not sure if this is mentioned already but around 5:16 there seems to be an audio noise issue, that sounded like an interference while recording. Several more interferences soon after this point. Hopefully just an one off exporting issue.
Annoying as hell lol
I love my EcoFlow, too. As a drohnen pilot with the Mavic 3 Cine Combo and the included three batteries, it's so amazing to power two of them up while flying the third one. Just amazing! By the way: Thank you for your time and the video to help us creating better content. ;-)
Which strength of black satin do you use?
Really liking the new retro ish edits 😊
Eeeey just in time! I needed to catch up with all these vertical contents.
thanks for the tips matti!
Cool! Thank you for sharing it.✌️
Thanks for this! 🌸😊💜
Which density did you chose for your black satin? Thank you for your video!!
Curious what the strength of the Black Satin filters are? In the comparisons, there's a strength rating for the Pro-Mist filters but not for the Black Satins. Are they the same, such as 6:06 shows Pro-Mist 1/2 and Black Satin, is the Black Satin also 1/2 strength?
Curious about this as well. Can’t seem to find strength reviews
I was always wondering how you achieved that look. Thanks for the tip !
Hey mate, which strength do you use for the Black Satin? Seems there is a variety
I’ve been using filters for years, just learned from your video you can use step up rings. Not sure how I didn’t realize that before but thanks!!
If you’re not learning you’re not growing they say. Lol - I always feel like I’m a year behind all the time.
Hi Matti, great video, what focal length and aperture did you use for your talking head shot in this video?
Great vid, Matti - I like MOMENT's CineBloom Diffusion Filters to bring down that digital feel from my SONY A7S3.
Thank you very much the whole video, inspiring!
But which black satin do you use 1/8 or 1/4 or more?
He's uses a 1/2 you can see at 7:01
I bought the Black Stein 1, that's what was in the link
It feels too soft to me and I haven't been able to use it the way I like yet.
I currently prefer the A7-4 without a filter if you have an idea for me I would love to hear it
Ive been wondering this for about a year, thanks for the answer!
This is the very first problem i faced as a content creator …. and it was so damnn frustrating 🥴 Wish i had this video back then 🔥💯
Perfect speed of speech to understand everything. I like your movie
Hey Matti! Loved your video and te information you privided. I've been a fan for a while now haha. I've come to tell that the glitch effect in the example parts are a bit too hight for someone using headphones. I really spikes when you hear it. But apart from that the video was perfect!
@Matti - what are your thoughts on the Black Satin 1 vs the 2, or 3?
I love the H&F black Mist 1/4 look.
Thnx, top as always 👏
I’m a fan of the glimmer glass !
great video, not there yet but def interesting
Great tips bro
@Matti, what's the strength of black satin do you use?
Which Black Satin did you use 1/8 or 1/4 which ND strength?
What strength of the Satin filter do you use?
Love your product placement. So well done and informative. If all product placements were like that, well. Have you tried to see if the green floater is still there with the filter as close to the lens as possible? (try shining a very bright flashlight through a triple glazed window at night). I agree about lens character. I've had a few over the years that just had that special sparkle.
I cannot agree more. I love the helios lens but it would be nice to have those characteristics on modern lenses.
Quick Question Matti ! What If I Want To Use This Filter But I Need To Use An ND Filter As Well ? 🤔
Is There Any Way To Use Two Filters At Once Without Having To Get A Matte Box ?
Can I use Halation effect in Davinci Resolve instead?
Hey Matti I use the black pro mist 1/8 and Peter McKinnon ND 2-5 for music videos, but the Satin blown my mind 🧠 🤯. Thank you to made the comparison. 🍻 👏
I shoot everything video with a promist 1/4. So good!
Try the Rokinon AF 45mm 1.8. Closest "modern" lens with a little bit of character that I have run across. The Rokinon 24mm 1.8 and the 75mm 1.8 also have a bit of character as well.
What strength did you use?
I def had a phase with teh vintage canon fds adn they def have a look for sure , also part of why I went with panasonic lenses over sigmas cuz everyone is rocking sigma and the panasonics have a slight of vintage and modern look
Love this vibe. Any time you wanna come hang in Montana and play with an Alexa Mini LF, you’re welcome. Take that Alexa vibe to the next level.
Is it also good for photography?
You should check out Tokina lenses. I use their vista cine lenses and they have much more pleasing highlight roll off
My Tiffen 1/8 black pro mist JUST came in this morning so I was really happy to see this video 😂
I definitely didn’t want to go above 1/8 because of how strong these are tho 😂
I just ordered the Hollywood Black Magic 1/4 filter. I had a black pro mist ruin a shoot for me by being too heavy handed so I've been a bit turned off on them recently. Just a bit too much bloom.
Thanks for sharing your secrets 🙈🙏
Sometimes I stack the Black Satin 1 with the Black Pro Mist 1/4. It gives interesting results.
You should try shooting on a Panasonic Eva-1, that camera shoots soft it’s really flattering
Thanks
I use 4x5.65 filters in a matte box a little more expensive but covers standard cinema glass
🔥🔥 🏆
Moment cinebloom is great filter as well and use that for my sports stuff.
I noticed people want the sharpest lenses but then want to emulate film.
Blue Thunder sounds badass ngl
Where do I find thta E Surfboard bro!
Dang, shooting with two Insta 360s while on the surfboard to get multiple angles! 👏
Kai stop growing so fast!
I'm still paranoid to take my Insta 360 one x2 into water without a housing. Do you think as long as the battery seats right it is okay? Obviously no deep dives.
Getting flashback to my eye check up appointment with that weird noise in transitions
@Matti Haapoja have you tried Cooke cinema lenses? They should have some character that you don't find in any other lenses 😉
Nice 😊😊👍👍
I need one of these
🔥
Black Satan filter is definately what I want!
Kyle on the jetski is so cute 😂
What’s with the sharp static noise throughout the video during the side by side views?? I keep thinking my headphones are malfunctioning
I find with step-up rings you can get vignetting if you have too many rings and also can't use any native lens hoods - so yeah rings or no rings - well its lens dependent or even if i'm shooting video vs photo. I know you can get metal hoods on the final ring or filter. I bought expensive 82mm filters and can't use the lens hoods on my RF 24-105L and my RF 70-200L F4 lenses since its 77mm.
As much as it's a good idea to have lenses with a filmic vibe to them, I feel like it's much better to stick with using the filters so that you can only use the effect when you really need it.
Hey Matti! Personally I would recommend dividing vlogs and tutorials, as I don’t care much for tutorials - title and thumbnail didn’t make me click, but I would have cared for watching a chill vlog - what it avtually started out as. This is just my 2 cents as a viewer. For me vlogtorials have never made much sense as video is never straight to the topic. Otherwise i hope you’re great and that you appreciate this input ✌️
What’s with the sound in some transitions? 5:14
Try Voigtlander VM lenses, they have much more of an interesting look
black satin 12 or 3?
The one I sthe Black Satin 3, my favorite
I've been using this kind of filter, I have an aps-c cam, it really helps a lot to kinda immitate the full frame look.
the goat
What's up with the audio during cuts to b-roll
Gosh dangit, the Black Satin was _my_ secret! Thanks for spilling the beans 🙃
For real though, it's everything I like about the BPM with virtually none of the drawbacks-the perfect balance of increased halation and reduced contrast and resolution. Another nifty aspect is that the halation doesn't change much between filter strengths, so it's easier to match the contrast and resolution of different lenses without affecting the bloom. So good!
It does seem like the perfect blend! Are you using 1/2 as well? I'm so scared to buy one before i know that 1/2 ain't too strong of an effect. I've seen a couple reviews and it seems like everyone is comparing the 1/2 to cinebloom 10% and BPM 1/8? Seems strange since you would think those are at waaay different levels of intensity?
@@DYNNIwav I would honestly say the Black Satin is too subtle, and Matti is incorrectly suggesting to use the same strength on multiple focal lengths, which will vary the effect. As others have stated in the comments, glimmerglass is the perfect middle ground between black pro mist and black satin.
what are these audio cracks every few seconds? 5:14 and 5:22 for example. there's a ton of focus hunting in the talking head scene also..
This whole video just inspires me to stick with my 1080p Nikon.
There are hundreds of lenses with character that are being used, and have been used for many years, just like Black Mist filters. Check out what professional photographers use. A good and cheap place to start is Carl Zeiss Jena 35mm still lenses from the 1950s and 60s, and you save time by checking the apature and focus while you shoting, instead of spending time afterwards checking if the autofocus hit the right focus.
The screeching sound effect is irritating, please don't use it. 🙏
which Black Satin do you use?
There are 3 Versions?
Tiffen Schwarzer Satin-Filter, 1
Tiffen Schwarzer Satin-Filter, 2
Tiffen Schwarzer Satin-Filter, 3
which one? haha cant find a difference
