- New Episode! Hiroshima Street Food on Miyajima: • Hiroshima Street Food ...
Hiroshima is one of Japan's top destinations, and when you're hungry, you have to try okonomiyaki. Hiroshima has it's own original style, and it's not so simple to make.
John travels to Okonomimura, a building full of Okonomiyaki shops, for lunch. There are many different toppings you can put on okonomiyaki. In many ways, it's like a pizza! In other ways, it's like a sandwich.
Taste is a personal preference so John experiments. With the help of a friend and the shop master, he puts one together.
Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is much different than Osaka's version. Osaka is more like a pancake with everything thrown into the batter. Hiroshima's is layered and takes time. The result is a more complex tasting meal. It's not just Hiroshima's soul food, it's super healthy and fun to eat.
About Okonomimura: It's a top destination for locals and tourists alike. It's packed with shops on 3 floors each with it's own recommended variety. Prices for okonomiyaki range from 800 yen to 1380 yen depending on toppings and ingredients.
Give it a try!

TOKYO'S MONSTER GYOZA CHALLENGE: The Largest Dumpling in the World
Kai and I go over Japan's challenge eating and the concept of "mottainai" which is a big part of Japanese culture.
Of course, I try to eat the mother of all gyoza, too! Photos from the shoot on Facebook: facebook.com/onlyinjapantv -John

This really should be showed on National TV. You'll never know whom you'll inspire John :-)! I'm even asking myself why I'm in the house and not travelling already lol...and I really want to o.o
Sorry But Im Winning I WILL HAVE TO DO SOME THING WITH THAT BITCH
I love the idea of eating right off the grill.
Spent the last hour after watching this trying to find a restaurant in Melbourne that makes Okonomiyaki like this, but I think we only have the Osaka style here. Now I'm just sad and hungry!
Daniel B If you can find the sauce, you're most of the way there! The recipe for the Osaka version is quite easy. Many Asian stores have the sauce. You may even be able to get the nori seaweed flakes and dried fish flakes mail order! Usually takes about 10 min to make one on a fry pan :) Maybe you'll have people lining up outside your door when the heavenly smell hits the air! -John
ONLY in JAPAN just want to say, I love how you run your channel. You handle the haters gracefully as well as always having fun, engaging content that is also respectful.
i miss Melbourne food :(
amen bruh. I've been fiending for some Hiroshima style okonomiyaki ever since I tried it right there at the mura in 2017. It's taken many disappointing (but still decent) meals to learn that Hiroshima does okonomiyaki their own special way
Dear John, my family and I are really enjoying the latest run of Only in Japan so far, please keep up the good work. We love the wide range of subjects explored too!
this is why I love Japan! 💜 great Food great Culture 💜
Im visiting Japan in a week i think im soo exited your channel inspired me to go ill also vlog there!
You can make okonomiyaki sauce, using ketchup, honey, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Came out tangy and great! I'm having it on a "Okonomiyaki Omelette" pancake made using just 4 bacon strips made into a ring, and green onions & egg in the center. Tastes great! =3
CaptRicoSakaraPrower thanks all have to try it out!!!
I have watched a lot of your videos and I haven't liked them all but I am subscribed. Absolutely amazing work. All of them are immaculate quality!

That's one the japanese foods I want to try the most. There is soooo much nice stuff in it.
Yes! The Hiroshima version is definitely packed with good stuff! So many different varieties too. Vegetarians can also get one without any meat on request. Me? Load it up with seafood! Hiroshima's is the best. -John
ONLY in JAPAN
Okonomiyaki with seafood? Man, you are making me even more jealous ;P
Love this channel. Great videos.
Thank you, stfn112! -john
Wow you rocked this! Very impressive. So much negi is added at the end!
We have an okonomiyaki restaurant in Toronto which has been in continuous operation since 1978. However, now that I see how they make okonomiyaki in Hiroshima I think the ones we get in Toronto have lost something in translation; they're not quite so complicated in their construction. I swear I could almost smell how good they were in this video.
Marc Goodman The "Okonomi House"? If this is it, I looked at the photo and....well, this may be the Osaka style Okonomiyaki but looks pretty with a lot of sauce! It seems like people like the Teriyaki Chicken more ... LOL -WAORYU staff
Yes, you are correct, it is the "Okonomi House". It's in a great location near the downtown campus of the University of Toronto and is physically located in a building housing graduate students and their families. Good food at a reasonable price since 1978! WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN
Of all the fantastic, wonderful dishes of Japan my favorite by far is the Hiroshima version of okonomiyaki. Aside from sushi it should be the national dish of a wonderful nation. I lived in San Francisco for 25 years and have found only one restaurant that sold anything similar to the dish. At this restaurant in Japantown it was known as 'modern yaki.' A great dish indeed but nothing near the the gem of a meal I had in Japan so many years ago.
Thanks for posting this.
omg finnaly! =] the waiting was worth it!!
hey john! :D , keep making these video's. i enjoy every single of them !
Thank you, can pinar! I hope every episode can hold its own. I'm editing the next episode now ... a Japanese eating challenege with the world's largest gyoza dumpling! Should be out shortly. I posted some photos on the Facebook page: facebook.com/onlyinjapantv -John
I would love to visit Japan, everything feels so personal and fun.
Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki.
By far the best okonomiyaki.
That was fun watching. Can't wait for your next video.
Thank you, Sakura! It should be out soon. I'm editing it right now. I post updates here: facebook.com/onlyinjapantv can't wait to film the next one!! -John

Wait no longer! haha! Thanks for the support. -John
great video, John. thanks.
Thanks, selami32! -John
I've had to watch a bunch of these while eating gyoza dumplings. It's the only way to stop yourself from immediately flying to Japan
This channel should have a show in TLC.
LOVE the videos!-This one made me especially hungry for the dish and to travel to Japan! All the best to you John!
Yay! thanks for the upload :p . I noticed that they didn't mash everything up, so it was great to have you explain why! tyty!
Right!! That would be the Osaka version where it is mixed. The Tokyo version called Monja-yaki does some mashing ... looks bad, tastes good! -John
i love this video. Japanese food is amazing!
I've watched like 6 episodes of this series today haha.
Just subscribed to your channel.. I'm really interested in visiting japan... In fact I'm a follower of Japanese comedy duos. Of course Downtown, cocorico and the whole Gaki no Tsukai staff...
Anyways cheers from a Venezuelan living in Mexico
Greetings from Tokyo! Muchas Gracias mi amigo!
Really appreciate it :) -John

trapper9998 jjiijjij
im not a fan of fish but from watching your videos it looks delicious an the okonamiaki looks like a Japanese super size crunch wrap lol if i ever visit i need a guide like you all the food looks delicious and the culture seems simple and easy going
Woah! The Crunch Wrap! Like it :) I'd never had anything like this okonomiyaki before coming to Hiroshima so I'm happy to have been able to share the experience. -John
I've been to this place yesterday - was super delicious! Thanks for recommending it!
Awesome!! The owner of Shinchan is in a lot of photos from viewers of the show! A viewer sent me a photo with him in January. He changed his hair! (Really a very nice guy who let me film this with him. He didn't have to do that.) Love the feedback. THANK YOU!! -John
when i spent a month in japan for foreign exchange my host mother made okonomiyaki like this. i fell in love with okonomiyaki. i never knew osaka made it a different way. now i know the area my host mother was from while i was in gifu.
I am quite impressed with the vid. Although I never been to Japan, but I always heard the culture is quite fantastic. Although it's not only known for the anime and the car companies like lexus Toyota and nissan, the food is very popular and very well known for its landmarks.
I really enjoyed this episode, even with that hungry hungry feeling afterwards :)
Got some laughs and giggles so... Guess it balance's out everything a bit, still need a bite tho!
I love this Japanese food!!!
The first time you make it already looks appetizing John
I may be the one who messed up more.....
Looks delish! My preference is for Osaka style.
Nice, welcome back!

That is a really nice okonomiaki. Nice job. The Chef seems very nice.

I remember you ! Your the ramen man you were the only good reporter in Tokyo eye . Really enjoying your videos . Form New Zealand

OMG....I wanna go to Japan.
Great video, keep it up.
Me too I have followed every step and japanese cuisine which I lov
great vid, you were not so bad for a first timer LOL
thanks for the tip, on my next trip to Hiroshima I will sure not miss try it :)
I subbed because I like watching him eat Japanese food lol
Can't wait for more
I wonder if it was invented by college students just mixing all the leftovers into one easy-to-eat pizza thingy lol
I believe it was made with leftover of batter, seafood and cabbage only after the war. I used to live in Hiroshima and this is what someone told me way back in 1999. That's a good questions and I'll research it when I go back! -John
+ONLY in JAPAN wow
ONLY in JAPAN wow
+ONLY in JAPAN wow
John the Bizarre Food's host had this on this week. You are correct. People didn't have a lot to eat after the war so the Chef's used table scraps and came up with Okonomiyaki, a pizza, omelet, pancake all in one! We are moving to Japan in July! So Excited.
Your videos are great! Keep on going 😊
I've been watching a few of these, and now I really want to visit so I can try all the good food!
CuzImBeastLykDat I know! There is too much to eat here ... there's so much that I don't know where to go and eat next!! Is there anything in particular you're interested in? -John
+ONLY in JAPAN Have you put traditional mochi on your planning?

Fantastic show!! Cheers!
YESSSSSSSSS! NEW VID! THANK YOU! THIS SERIOUSLY MOTIVATES ME TO CONTINUE LEARNING JAPANESE WHEN I WANT TO GIVE UP! NEVER STOP MAKING YOUR AWESOME VIDEOS! I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!
Interesting bit of info, people of African ancestry tend to have a more thorough and easier understanding of Japanese.
Thank you, mjbitz! You rock! Don't give up learning Japanese! I'll keeping making videos as much as I can. -John
Usmodlover Oh wow! That is interesting! Do you know why that is exactly?
WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN Thanks! Ok! I eagerly look forward to them! :D
mjbitz
I think it may be as simple as similarities between African languages and Japanese in terms of pronunciation, etc.Often on Japanese television for example, there will be an African-American guy on a game show or whatever and he will speak immaculate Japanese.
新ちゃん!行ったことあります!懐かしい~
Just had dinner but after watching this i am hungry again!
Nice video! I am going Hiroshima next month. 😊
7:49 Is my favorite clip. You looked so serious.
this video was owesome it made me hungry :)
