Thanks for responses. I was on staff when i wrote and produced this at Sega of America. S2 was done in Japan so most of my music was only on SOA titles. We over wrote for most projects. I will post more unreleased tracks from my Genesis demos in coming days.
What exactly was the intended purpose for these tracks? Were they meant to be place holders? Were they meant to be used in the game before Nakamura took over? Or were they intended to be used alongside his music? Thank you.
He actually revealed what the song was already. While he didn't play the actual song on the tape he realized that the song was actually remixed in Sonic Adventure as Twinkle Park's music. ruclips.net/video/4qAnfh8X8wU/видео.html
So many questions.... Team Sonic did relocate to SOA at one point when they were still STI (Sega Technical Institute). Can't remember if S2 was SOJ or SOA, but S3 definitely was because Michael Jackson toured our studios! (a story for another time!). My music reel/demo cart was a custom job by DTS engineer Ken Chao. He built the shell and I provided my Genesis/GEMS files. ROM image must be long gone by now... :( but at least I have the cart! Capturing more soon...
Hey, just a note: if your cartridge is still able to boot on a Genesis console, you can extract the data from it fairly easily, and recover the ROM image from it! I haven't seen a picture of the cartridge board itself, so there's no telling how complicated it might be, but chances are your cartridge is fairly simple engineering-wise, containing an EEPROM chip with the compiled program on it. You might want to have this done professionally for your own backup, even if you don't plan on sharing the data online, because bit-rot does happen to EEPROM and PROM chips over time.
Sonic 2 CD was basically an early Sonic 2, with a linear time travel plot. i.e. You don't actively time travel like in CD, but it'd serve as a level transition. It would've involved exploring various zones in Westside Island in the present, a bad present, a bad future, and the past. e.g. Emerald Hill, Dust Hill, Chemical Plant, and Hilltop were all gonna represent the same zone across 4 time periods. Eventually, Sonic would've entered a zone in the past called Olympus (Hidden Palace?), where he likely would've gained his super form. The game was still in a pretty early state when they came up with that, so most of it likely wasn't implemented when they decided to split it into two projects.
I'm sure many others asked this, but would it be possible to dump the rom and host it somewhere? This is mind blowingly awesome, and I'd like to see what else is hidden within this!
@Mega Man Nintendo doesn’t hold the copyright, sega does. Nintendo has no control over Sonic or early development roms or anything of the sort relating to him. He’s a Sega property, not a Nintendo one.

@@ghxstevxrt6448 Dust Hill seems to fit more with what became Oil Oceans track, a unused zone even uses Oil Oceans theme thats thought to be Dust Hills leftover. This is probably something to do with Casino Night.
A few quick question for clarity, was the club scene music track early place holders or were they meant for levels, did the level make it into the final game? Also were you going to compose with Nakamura or was this just a creative placeholder ?
the composer explained that this was actually a theme made for no level in mind, i guess the sonic 2 composers would just make tracks and the game devs would see which would level it would fit in

Thanks a bunch for sharing this! This is certainly a strange piece of Sonic 2 history. It's especially strange that Sonic 2 was once slated to use the GEMS synthesizer instead of SMPS like it does now.
I was just curious, when I listened to this parts of it reminded me of the opening song from Cabaret, yeah that musical. Was that any inspiration for this? Or is it just coincidence since they're both club/Cabaret style music?
I get a Final Fantasy vibe from this track. xD It would definitely fit a RPG IMO. This is awesome regardless, thank you for sharing this with us David!
00 sounded like it was to be used when Sonic starts an Act. 01 is of course that beloved _SE-GA!_ 02 probably would have been an intro to Casino Night or maybe a boss cutscene. Also, that animation of Tails sleeping is adorable!
My theory for this is that this could’ve been a cutscene when transitioning from casino night to hilltop, or mystic cave depending on the zone order, since it says club scene it most likely could’ve been related the casino night. It could’ve also been after sonic defeats the casino night boss and chases him down.
Thanks for uploading this! When I get older I’m thinking about working for Sega so I might remix this track! It’s one of the best Sonic Track in the world!
I have a theory, sonic FANS! the dev's were probably thinking of adding cut scenes into the game! It does say club SCENE! It would be how sonic three works. It also says choose sequence which would make sence for a cut scene!
All The Music Sounds Fantastic and I Love it! This just proves that Beta Content from Old Games (that have lots of things from the beta already discovered) can still be found to this day!
I know 3 years ago I mentioned that this sounded like a desert-themed level (and it still kinda does). But I know now that Sand Shower was actually going to use what became Oil Ocean's music. Also, listening to this one again, it almost sounds like it could've worked in a haunted house-type level. I read online that Mystic Cave was going to be a sort of haunted house-type stage, and that it basically evolved from Mountain Madness (either that, or aspects of Mountain Madness were re-used for what would become Mystic Cave). In fact, if you listen to this song and Mystic Cave's music, they're both in the same key and they both have sort of a "spooky" vibe. This music could've matched up nicely with the original Mountain Madness Zone concept.
Thank you for sharing this! I didn't know these tracks exist. They might think that these are not fitting to the Sonic games, but they are still good and mystic tracks for Genesis era. Loved them.
I think the "Club Scene" could've been used for a cutscene that would play before Sonic went to casino night I guess? It was probably scrapped due to size limitations if that was the case. The second, more logical reason could be just a song used for testing the Mega Drive sound chip.
My guess for this theme is that it might have been for genocide city / cyber city zone. It fits that bad future type of feel just like sonic cd. Sonic 2 was originally going to have a time travel feature and plot so it would make sense.

i think this music uses the sonic 2 module and was not actually on the verge of being used on any level it sounds VERY different from what was put in the game or even in the betas and at the start it says "module test"
