Hey guys! This is my new channel where I go over strictly gta online content: youtube.com/@giggity280 If you’re interested in gta online, please go check it out!!
Well there is no such thing as awd e39, unless it is custom made… I own a 2000 525i touring with 225k miles and to be honest the only problem is rust. Until yesterday almost everything under the hood was from the factory, but I did some preventative maintenance. Mpg is shit if you floor it every chance you get😅 Btw it has beautiful sound because of remus exhaust upgrade.
The M54 is a premium motor and much less likely to blow up than the V8. I found a 5 speed, but even the autos are stout. Both touring and sedan facelift still look understated yet low key cool and non-car people don't expect it's a 20+ year old design, other than when they notice the eczemic clearcoat. It's heavy as hell (Germans call them "Panzer") but they're quiet and comfy. They care about what's on the inside. They can be easily modernized with a radio upgrade and then you're missing none of the modern comforts. All the leaking issues I can personally confirm. PS, valve cover, oil consumption, coolant coming out of every which quickconnect, brittle and keen-to-snap fiberglass reinforced plastics all around the engine bay, brittle vacuum lines, oil/water separator tube. That said I love it. When I pass other E39 drivers I give them the "hang loose bimmer boy" salute. I had to replace the LCD display+ribbon cable inside the dash, but I was able to do it myself. Only moderate difficulty, so don't be worried if you find one requiring the "Pixel Fix". Hardest part is carefully putting the stepper motors back in place. My car was an absolute money pit ($3k paid + $12k repairs and upgrades incl OEM suspension overhaul) but now it's all sorted I'm running it until the wheels fall off. Good and interesting car. If I were frugal I'd have kept my 2000 Accord. By comparison, there is no comparison. This car is 10 times better than the Accord.
E39s with inline 6s do not leak. Only neglected ones leak. If yours leaks, whether it is oil, steering fluid, coolant, or anything, repair it immediately. Don't blame the car for lack of maintenance. Be it the cooling system, the DISA VALVE, the Vanos system, twisted seat, wheel speed sensors, broken window regulators, trunk and hood shocks, bushings, engine mounts, reservoir cap, instrument console, thrust bearing, worn steering rack, fuses located under carpet, leaking sunroof, broken door lock trapping you in the back seat, steering wheel and seat adjustment, disintegrated rubber and plastic, toe adjustment wearing out tires prematurely, glovebox unable to open even when unlocked, limp mode kicking in for no reason, heat from exhaust destroying anti lock break control module that BMW no longer has available new so that now you can skid or spin out in wet weather, blocked fuel filters, the long weird plastic pipe that encircles the engine, absorbing the heat so that it gets brittle in three years, the necessary sparkplug upgrade from Bosch to NGK, just to name a few flaws of this great but not perfect car. Remember, the E39s and E46s are BMW at its best from 1999 to 2003.
The only thing i can say is, out of the few cars i have worked on, the e39 was the easiest one to work in the engine bay, but the dash is a huge pain in the ass to take off if you ask me
I miss my father's old 2001 M5 sucks he had to sell it would've been a nice handme down as a first car Edit: also glad to see you bring back good, bad, ugly roden
PLEASE READ! 528i owner here, Absolutely love it. i have an active MPG gauge on the dash and reads up to 45mpg! I average 21-25 with in city driving after all the mid torque launches just to get up to speed limit while I also at certain speed(BASED ON RPM) I can also cruise at 40MPG @ 60MPH! One thing to note for MPG: (APPLIES TO ANY CAR) for best fuel economy keep it LOW RPM, use the transmission shift points to your advantage (meaning) WATCH YOUR TRANSMISSION SHIFT POINTS! (If its an automatic) learn them and save your self some $$$ for stuff like a turbo LOL.
im only 15 but im trying to buy one of them right now, I understand fully that they are pricey and need a ton of maintenance but ive done a ton of research as well as asking the community about them
You touched on something that is very true. My friend with a 22 M850i is the nicest car guy ever. They guys I know with older 335i talk a lot of 💩 and talk down about other cars.
I was so happy to find out this video wasn’t as old as the cars lol bcos i found one and been wanting to buy one, I want it to be a daily but also have fun with it like you said so I think it would be a great fit
I daily a 535i with the M Sport suspension and it handles like a go kart..!! My 3rd E39 and I wouldn't be without at least one. Best allrounder ever made,
You don’t buy this car without knowing what it is! Nor do you buy it without planning to work on it yourself!! If you’re just looking for A car, this is not for you. Just saying. Good video and stick to his suggestions if you’re not familiar; that goes for most enthusiasts vehicles. You go into the search/buying process knowing what you want when it’s a 20 year old plus vehicle!
I've read some good things about the MPG on forums, even for the V8's. If you can keep your foot out of it, some have gotten high 20s even out their M5s. Keep it on cruise control around 70 on the hwy and supposedly you can average 27mpg.
Just bought a 2003 E39525i m sport In a nice black paint job . Damn window regulators don’t work to the driver and passenger and other then that it has no issues just needs new breaks and it’s at 116k miles . Having fun modifying it
I had one of these 10 years ago. Was an absolute maintenance hog, things replaced off the top of my head: Vapour barriers in doors ABS module entire coolant system x2 Several oil gaskets such as oil filter housing, rocker cover gasket The resistor for the speed fan on the HVAC Vanos Seals Pixels on the instrument cluster But fuck me, my 2002 525i with the motorsport package in Topaz blue with style 42 staggered rims looked drop dead gorgeous...
@@jasonschreiber6458 no, I had a 2002 E39 525i and it was losing most of the pixels on the screen. I believe it was the pre-LCI models that had a different cluster that dont have the pixel dying issue.
Also if you are considering buying an e39 look for rust, these cars tend to rust pretty bad. Rear jack points, fender arches, doors, you name it. Other than that they are pretty good!
I miss my 2002 e39 530i. She was a dream for snow and even heavy rain drifting. Might get another one one day. That or an e46. Either way I wanna get one and upgrade it down the road.
Which model would you recommend as a good balance between reliability and performance? Maybe the 530i being the bigger I6 or the 535i being the smaller V8?
great list for sure. you definitely hit all of the major issues besides the timing chain guides on the 540 models and the oil pump nut more so on 530i models after tuning. overall though i would have to disagree that although it is a German car it is a rather easy car to work on and actually very beginner friendly!
Bought my 2003 brand new, no major issues in the 20 years ive had her...BUT, I have replaced no less than 9 window regulators....Design flaw so dont waste your $$$ on BMW regulators.
I spent a fortune fixing every oil leak in my 540i. Just two weeks later the leaks came back. I gave up and came to terms that this car needs to leak like we need to breath.
The pre and post facelift models came with differant size engines contrary to their name, my facelift 520i has a 2.2L like you say but a pre facelift 520i did come with a 2L
The LCD display going out is´t a huge issue. The problem is a cable going loose due to poor design. A handy guy could fix this for 10$. If you go to a shop. they might take 100-200$. Not bad.
not really wrong? m52 in the 520 is more reliable than the m54, at least pretty much everyone i know including myself believes so. m54 beats out the v8s for sure and while neither the m62 or s62 are known to be super reliable at least parts for the m62 is cheaper than for the s62
E39 540xi would be an intresting car if it existed. e39 where never awd. e39 cupholder? IF they came with a cupholder back in 2000, there probably broken many years back.
im wondering if a e39 is worth a drift build compared to 330s and 325s they are better condition better price in my area and ik what I'm doing with german cars I've already owned 2 audis opinions is the diff that bad?
E39 doesnt have xdrive, its only rwd. Why didnt you mention the m57 diesel ones, they smoke every gas engine in the e39, big turbo downpipe remap easy takes the m5.
hi you all , i have a 540i since 2008 and i never had any issue with my e39 v8 i still have the car til;l this day , .16 years . and to me is the best car ever made bmw will never make a bvetter car than this one ...
You mentioned "The lower the trim level, the more reliable" This is not true at all, I've heard from countless of BMW enthusiasts that higher trim levels are often more reliable. And BMW's 4 cylinder cars are some of the worst engines to exist, since they pretty much always start leaking oil and mess up. While the 6 cylinders often hold up waaay better
Im guessing you have never seen an e39 cup holder. They are the worst designed, worst executed cup holders i have ever seen. Volvo had a better cup holder in the early 90s and it was the first time a volvo had a cup holder.
This guy knows nothing. The 2.5 L engine is 170bhp not 192. E39 and most BMW are famous for drifting and cornering. Handling is best of any car. There was no 2.3L engine so the x23s got 2.5L instead. Great car glad to see a video about E39.
The Good: -Nice vid clips The Bad: -missed an obvious ugly, which is 540 timing chain guides -missed some very interesting facts of this car, including: ----the I6 models were the first mass produced car with all aluminum suspension components and subframes...even the knuckles are aluminum ----Rumored that BMW spent more time and money developing this car than any other model they've ever made ----The multi-link rear suspension design was a huge step forward and still used in same basic configuration on current models 30 years later ----Many automakers still continue to use this car for benchmarking ride and handling as part of product development -terrible towel The Ugly: -e39 never had X drive! Cmon dude research harder -Didn't have great handling?? See points above about aluminum for lower unsprung mass and revolutionary rear suspension design
A poor analysis of one of the iconic BMWs, one of the best of all time. The E39 was actually built until 2004 in its Touring form. The trim levels were SE, Sport, Individual, M, engine options WERE NOT trim levels. Nor were there any AWD versions on an E39. Basic analysis failures. There were inline 6s from 520i to 530i petrol models and a 540i V8 petrol. Of course people from the USA miss that there were 3 diesels including the the 525d and 530d M57 engined turbo diesels. The 530d in its facelift form has better performance than the 525i and the 530i only slighty shades the 530d, except in acceleration from 40 mph where the 530d is vastly superior due to its max torque delivery from 1750 to 4000 rpm. The handling is a bench mark for other cars. If properly maintained they are generally reliable and don't leak particularly the M57 525d & 530d engine models. A realy rubbish analysis.
at 8.13 did you just say the the design is boring mate? what? e39 is the best design of all cars betwinn 96 - 2014...are you mad???? this car looks like a car, not like a toy. and safer too ....what are you on about. name a better design car in that era in your opinion, please

El 525 tiene 192 CV, los que tienen 170 CV son el 520i de 2,2 cc (tengo uno) y el 523i. Él no sabe mucho....pero tú sabes menos.
The Good:
-Nice vid clips
The Bad:
-missed an obvious ugly, which is 540 timing chain guides
-missed some very interesting facts of this car, including:
----the I6 models were the first mass produced car with all aluminum suspension components and subframes...even the knuckles are aluminum
----Rumored that BMW spent more time and money developing this car than any other model they've ever made
----The multi-link rear suspension design was a huge step forward and still used in same basic configuration on current models 30 years later
----Many automakers still continue to use this car for benchmarking ride and handling as part of product development
-terrible towel
The Ugly:
-e39 never had X drive! Cmon dude research harder
-Didn't have great handling?? See points above about aluminum for lower unsprung mass and revolutionary rear suspension design
The cup holders are famously horrible. Calling them nice is just dishonest.
A realy rubbish analysis.
at 8.13 did you just say the the design is boring mate? what? e39 is the best design of all cars betwinn 96 - 2014...are you mad???? this car looks like a car, not like a toy. and safer too ....what are you on about. name a better design car in that era in your opinion, please
e39 xdrive does not exist
AWD wtf? It dont hawe that
This is bullshit. X-drive didn't even exist until 2003. Not only that, E39 never ever got an AWD version.
Straight slander to call all v8 German engines unreliable as if the m113 doesn’t exist and others alike
Diesel
bruv you are a city boy calm down buy one and drive it then start talking.

The only down side
I don't trust Recirculating steering
It feels like an old sedan de ville 1980's Cadillac
Not the sharp sedan handling from 530i
Always!!!! Do cover these cars! Keep them
Protected from heat/ elements.
Oh! The Keyfob
I learned after 3 times
23 years dropping my keys Fkit!
Well a bad bad thing occurred
I literally gave the 530i a freaking lobotomy
So I had the non working 530i key on the same Key ring along with the Working Key's inner battery which belongs to Mr.M5 both spares together
I know I stuck the 530i no battery spare key in the ignition to turn it on. The Proximity of the 530i outer ignition ring who detects the actual car'skey
Apparently again due to the Proximity" it read the info from
Mr M5's spare key
It scramble my 530i
Didn't want to start
Thanks God I had my scanner & reprogrammed it.
Never ever place these
Together"" near ignition outter ring
Im sorry, rx8 has 8 problems? That's why there's 100s of them for sale for $1000 on every classifieds site?
