My complaint is the slowness of when powers activate, and the voice acting is lackluster with only saying the first sentence or so rather than the entire dialogue. My other major complaint is not being able to save in versus mode at all. Also can’t save in campaign whenever I want, so I have to only start at the beginning of a turn rather than anywhere anytime.
It would have been nice to get all 4 titles in a collection that would be worth the $60 price tag but I’m still happy they released this collection can’t wait to pick it up
I suspect the reason they did this was because Advance Wars 1+2 was the original domestic Japanese release. Advance Wars 1 and Advance Wars 2 were only released independently of each other in the US and Europe. Because of 9/11, Advance Wars 1 was not released by itself in Japan. Instead, about a year after Advance Wars 2 was released in the States, Nintendo released a compilation version of the two games together on a single GBA pak. This Re-Boot Camp is basically a remake of that particular version.
what about custom map sizes, advance campaign, how does vs play work? do you pick whether you play aw1 style or aw2 style co stats because all we've seen is the neo tank button also does aw1 sturm have a different sprite?
The art style is the same in both Campaigns from footage I have seen. One reviewer said you can have 50 slots for Design Maps and default max size 30x20 (size can be changed).
@@RadioTails That's good, I was worried that they would keep the inferior gba/dual strike map maker, days of ruin had the best one still hopibg for bigger map sizes
The 3D lacks the same proportions and art style of the original, which to me was a huge selling point. This has the same visual vibe as some cheap, free to play game I get advertisements for on Facebook or something. It looks pretty crap compared to the original, which felt like there was care and style put into things.
Did they fix the AI so it doesn't automatically know where your units are with fog of war on? In the original version, I would hide troops in the forest, and the AI always come up to their exact spots.
Very different game, wargroove has only really each char has a different groove and otherwise every unit regardless of commander picked has the same stats, but advance wars has the entire army changes based on co picked and co powers are more op. Completely different feel then wargroove. Also, the enemy generally out numbered you but they made the ai worse to compensate in advance wars, kinda a different feel when you have only half the units of the enemy co and have to win somehow. The fact that Metroid Prime Remastered with its full 3D environments and PBR runs at a rock solid 60fps (even if it’s “just” 900p), and yet with this, 5 little helicopters floating on some 2D sky has the framerate jumping all over the place is unforgivable. I hope this is a great remake, i'm looking forward to playing it and i hope it's worth the wait, i understand they want to be sensitive and careful with everything going on but keeping us waiting this long was a weird move if the game was allegedly finished long before now
Yeah, I'm thinking they used the extended time to polish it more. Then Ukraine happened. I hope Way Forward polished it up more instead of just letting it sit on the shelf.
Do you know if it has a play and wait multiplayer? Like wargroove did? (Where you take a turn then can leave and the other player can login and make their turn the next day. Kind of the chess by mail mode)
Would have loved to see matchmaking with randoms online, if only in a casual sense but no doubt the community can help fill in the gap there. Really happy with what I've played of it so far and can't wait to dig into some community-led competition.
Might be an outlier here but the plastic-ness of the units bother me. I guess in practice its more to resemble a toy like aesthetic. The character animated captains are fine but even then, if you look at the static menu illustration art there's something missing to me when it got remastered from its 2d original. The original art is just that good I guess. Maybe I wanted Advance Wars but with the Guilty Gear XRD or Strive 2d style treatment.
Yes, the original art style for the units was excellent, and it was a mis-step to change it, rather than clean it up for HD graphics. The COs look good though
Radii, not radiuses. Oh, and I'm excited to play these games again. Been around 20 years since I played them, guess it's about time to play them again.
I played both Gba versions and even bought wars 1 with a gba sp a few years ago. Needless to say, I'm a fan. 60 bucks seems awfully steep though. I'm going to have to think about whether I'm willing to spend that.
I used to love the mini intro animation when every fight starts and the sounds.. in this new one it was a bit disappointing to see there is almost no sound to those intros.. it's a very subtle detail but I just to love that 😢
There is an "embargo" (sort of) where developers asked reviewers do not share AW2 footage, so newcomers are not spoiled. I don't really think is necessary, but it's ok the devs push for that.
That's my problem with this remake, looks and sounds amazing but I played these games before. With so many new games to buy I can't justify a second go right now.
Everything you explained is the reason I love advance wars, I played the original gba version and I absolutely love it, what I love about it is that the countries I. The game are based on actual countries, every unit has its strengths and weaknesses and it really makes you strategize attack and defense at the same time and the different terrain types on the map, when I heard about the reboot finally being released, I used one of my vouchers for it because of how much fun I had playing the originals and love the overall gameplay
This series was my intro to turn based tactics games. I wasn't very good at RTS games, but having the ability to take my time started a fascination that grew into my addiction to XCOM2. (Just don't play the Switch version of XCOM2.)
@@braves4life25 It has its issues but mainly the biggest issue with it is that it doesn't have mod support. The modding community has done wonders with XCOM EU/EW and XCOM 2. Hell, you don't even need to know much to mod the game yourself since almost all of the numerical values in the game (eg damage a weapon does, how accurate it is, etc) is in a plaintext format so you can edit a lot of the game with a program like the free and excellent Notepad++
Ironically, the Switch version is more optimized for Switch hardware than the PC version is for the Steam Deck. So, if you aren't into modding, the Switch version is better for portable gaming.
@braves4life25 Mod support is a big reason and it loads very slowly. More than that, the switch version has a short character draw distance. Ive had many times where the game seems to disagree where a downed soldier is as they despawn then respawn as I move the camera. Long range sniper tricks become unusable as the game doesn't acknowledge when I have a clear line of sight for my sniper half way across the map, because his target has despawned. I've used this tactic many times in the PC version as it makes the Killzone skill incredible.
This game was probably the best purchase I made this year, I play on all platforms for this game GBA DS and now the switch and I'm addicted to it. I'm constantly making new maps to play with my buddies and I'm learning better ways to strategize. I really hope that it becomes an esports event
For years I wanted Advance Wars to come back. It got announced and I was so excited, then it got delayed. I was afraid I’d never see this remake and here we are. This is my most anticipated game probably of all time.
I love advance wars too and I’m glad it’s coming back, but this seems like a remake for new players. If anything, I was hoping for online multiplayer against randoms, but they seemed very careful to say online multiplayer with friends. That would have been an amazing feature to get people to return to the game. I still have the originals, and I’m not sure an update on graphics is enough for me to return
I’ve never played an Advance Wars game or anything similar, but I might just have to check this remake out! It looks pretty fun! Thanks for the review, Nintendo Life!
If they ever did a online mode they should do it where you can play with friends. And if they started a match and both can't continue because they have to go because you know how long battles are. They should have it save and remain where they both stopped. Like a save file online then when both jump back on they continue where they left off.
So Advance Wars with a fresh coat of paint? Sounds pretty good! The real question now is whether I can deal with playing an entire game with Arin Hanson in my ear.
1/010 5 stars, perfect game....at least I'm hoping. Regardless I've just needed my Advance Wars fix...can't wait for this in a few days. Hopefully it sells enough for either a new game or remakes of the DS games.
Dang, I’ve never played these, but it reminds me a bit of a strategy war game on NES my brother & I used to play called Conflict. Advanced Wats is way more, well advanced, but it’s in that genre. I’ll have to get this once I’m done with Tears of the Kingdom.
OP says that they have a hard time finding something to complain about. Lol. Just look at online multiplayer. I promise it doesn't take very long to find.
In this specific case the visuals are really the primary selling point over the original, as a remake, so it’s a little more important to nail the landing on that front
It makes sense why they are treading back to their OG roots. They don’t know if this is going to sell past the OG fans of this, so they are reintroducing the franchise and if it’s popular, they’ll definitely make a newer entry
@@drakeboutte1466 You're probably right, but the switch is 6 years old now, any "new" Advance Wars game will be for the next console. I think this was Nintendo testing to see if the developers of Shantae were up for developing an Advance Wars game. Cool cell shaded are style, similar to River City Girls.
It took me a while to come round to the 'board game' style and I prefer the original pixel style a lot BUT the tone and the way the characters treat War in this game totally feels like a boardgame sometimes, I think it can definitely fit without any mental gymnastics or anything

They didn’t wanna release like at the beginning of it which is understandable. (Funny they released it 1 year later)
It's this series' curse at this point. The original Advance Wars faced something similar.
Yeah, I'm thinking they used the extended time to polish it more. Then Ukraine happened. I hope Way Forward polished it up more instead of just letting it sit on the shelf.
to play with friend do both need a copy of the game?
Do you know if it has a play and wait multiplayer? Like wargroove did?
(Where you take a turn then can leave and the other player can login and make their turn the next day. Kind of the chess by mail mode)
Whats about the Balancing of the COs?
I love advance wars on GBA. Still play both to this day but I HATE the catroony character design for the reboot. Ill stick to the original!
Should've probably mention that for vehicles you also need to keep track off all vehicle's gasoline. Air and Sea in particular
Would have loved to see matchmaking with randoms online, if only in a casual sense but no doubt the community can help fill in the gap there. Really happy with what I've played of it so far and can't wait to dig into some community-led competition.
can you replay missions in this reboot camp? my other reason to buy this is online play with a ladder, but it sounds like that might not happen...
This should of been pixel art
I played both Gba versions and even bought wars 1 with a gba sp a few years ago. Needless to say, I'm a fan. 60 bucks seems awfully steep though. I'm going to have to think about whether I'm willing to spend that.
DId they bother to balance the COs? I know too well that's they aren't balance at all in the original games
What time will it be released tmr?
I love the art style
Would love to see the original Super Famicom Wars maps revamped as a DLC.
Nice ive been waiting for a review of this game!
Only a year and a half extra :p
@@rambo_andoyeah i cried when it got delayed 😭
Coming back to Nintendolife it's still the quality i am use to! Even if i really miss the "hello there lovely people" :)
If this does well, we might eventually see the same treatment for the other forgotten classics like Golden Sun, Sin and Punishment, and Custom Robo.
YESSS!!! Custom robo needs a comeback!
Custom Robo. YES PLEASE.
Custom and Chibi Robo, plz
I used to love the mini intro animation when every fight starts and the sounds.. in this new one it was a bit disappointing to see there is almost no sound to those intros.. it's a very subtle detail but I just to love that 😢
Can you still block in a fighter plane with 4 tanks?
can someone please confirm if you can play online up to 4 players or not
Wow, the new graphics are cool! Just replayed Advance Wars again recently. Perfect timing.
Sounds like bad timing. No real reason to play this remaster if you just played these games.
Not sure if I will have it physical or downloaded🤔
Yes there is a physical copy
I have this game preordered. I just wish we'd gotten a little taste of AW2 during some of these reviews.
There is an "embargo" (sort of) where developers asked reviewers do not share AW2 footage, so newcomers are not spoiled. I don't really think is necessary, but it's ok the devs push for that.
Great review, we can't wait to dive into this one!
Is the A I. Smarter or the same?
That's my problem with this remake, looks and sounds amazing but I played these games before. With so many new games to buy I can't justify a second go right now.
Everything you explained is the reason I love advance wars, I played the original gba version and I absolutely love it, what I love about it is that the countries I. The game are based on actual countries, every unit has its strengths and weaknesses and it really makes you strategize attack and defense at the same time and the different terrain types on the map, when I heard about the reboot finally being released, I used one of my vouchers for it because of how much fun I had playing the originals and love the overall gameplay
Based on actual countries?
Turtle approves of this review
So can you play online with random or just friends
I believe it’s just friends
This series was my intro to turn based tactics games. I wasn't very good at RTS games, but having the ability to take my time started a fascination that grew into my addiction to XCOM2. (Just don't play the Switch version of XCOM2.)
What’s wrong with the switch version?
Some people complaining that its full price.... its a TWO GAME BUNDLE!!! lol relax
can you do one on the new rtype tactical thats coming out later this year please?
Still hoping for a content update/DLC/expansion involving Dual Strike. Just give me the COs, units, and the dual CO mechanic.
10:59 YES! By the way, was it called Days of Ruin even in UK? I assumed it was Dark Conflict in every European country.
Strange the game is not available in Japan. I wanted to get it with TotK with a voucher but not in Japan it turns out:(
I never played the originals, but was always interested from afar. I will definitely be picking this one up! Thanks guys!
This game was probably the best purchase I made this year, I play on all platforms for this game GBA DS and now the switch and I'm addicted to it. I'm constantly making new maps to play with my buddies and I'm learning better ways to strategize. I really hope that it becomes an esports event
I thought about getting it. I loved it for Turbo Duo. Too bad it's for $60. If it was for $20 maybe I would have got it...
For years I wanted Advance Wars to come back. It got announced and I was so excited, then it got delayed. I was afraid I’d never see this remake and here we are. This is my most anticipated game probably of all time.
Same here. I can’t wait to experience the nostalgia all over again.
same
I love advance wars too and I’m glad it’s coming back, but this seems like a remake for new players. If anything, I was hoping for online multiplayer against randoms, but they seemed very careful to say online multiplayer with friends. That would have been an amazing feature to get people to return to the game. I still have the originals, and I’m not sure an update on graphics is enough for me to return
You didn't talk about the AI. I am hoping they upped the ai in verses mode and war room!
Is there an option to turn the graphics back good?
It is beautiful, the only issue I have is that you can't save versus missions
delaying it for so long and making it $60 is nintendo begging for it to fail, honestly, but it looks great and lovingly-crafted
you sound like $60 is a lot of money lol
I just really hope that the remade audio holds up to the original
Pre-ordered this when it was first announced. I am so looking forward to its release.
I have it pre ordered, I'm excited. I wish though it went the hd pixel route like squareenix
2023 is truly a year for the old gen players!! from MMBN Collection, Advance Wars Reboot, to Suikoden Remaster are awesome!!
You think konami will throw us vandal hearts fans a bone?
I forgot about this game, but glad I did not miss it!! Def getting this
The lights on the buildings blinking drives me absolutely nuts. They are super distracting.
So Advance Wars with a fresh coat of paint? Sounds pretty good!
The real question now is whether I can deal with playing an entire game with Arin Hanson in my ear.
Who's he voicing?
@@sleepykhajiit1875 Max I believe. And yeah, Max's voice is really bad.
its ok, he doesnt talk that much
Multiplayer matchmaking would make this a must buy for me.
I like 2D style... but the 3D...
OP says that they have a hard time finding something to complain about. Lol. Just look at online multiplayer. I promise it doesn't take very long to find.
is it two player ?
Woah there's online?? Wonder how that will work makes me want to touch my switch again
Wait this game is out? It didn't get cancelled?
it's out on fri. and no it was never cancelled. Nintendo just wanted to virtue signal and held off for a while.
@@thecunninlynguist wat?
@@jowysw what?
@@thecunninlynguist let me be more specific. What are you talking about?
The war delayed it
Glowing review: 9/10 WHAT??
We had one minor gripe about an aesthetic, so we kept the game from a perfect score. WHAT?!
In this specific case the visuals are really the primary selling point over the original, as a remake, so it’s a little more important to nail the landing on that front
maan im soo hyped for and and wanna see what black hole team looks like in 2
I'm going to buy and love this game, especially in multiplayer, but I still wish they made a new entry with this style of graphics.
Nothing to complain about? Toy aesthetic is at least a mixed bag and most guy cos look just bad
It took me a while to come round to the 'board game' style and I prefer the original pixel style a lot BUT the tone and the way the characters treat War in this game totally feels like a boardgame sometimes, I think it can definitely fit without any mental gymnastics or anything
I loved advance wars at 2001 and thrilled to play it at my switch 😊
