The other mistake you forgot to mention is the Join Capp A lot of people make the mistake of joining the infanry first, losing its turn What you should do is capp first, then you join the other infantry Its a very small thing, but doing to former definetly will make you lose some cities that you would like to have
The other mistake is join capping when it's better to just restart the cap. For example if you've capped with a 4HP infantry then the city still has 16 points. If you join cap using a full HP infantry then the city will still be on 12 points. Instead you should bring your 4HP infantry off the city, and start the cap again with the fresh infantry.
I would say that is just a symptom of not understanding Join in general. I remember not understanding the point of it and why I would ever want to do it. Having the joinee do something first is important for most uses of Join. After realizing that, doing anything different is just a misclick. Any little thing can make a difference. For capjoin specifically, its best use is capturing hotly contested properties when you can't prevent the infantry from taking damage turn after turn. Start with full health, then keep joining to sustain the capture chipping away at it until you eventually get it.
As someone trying to play competitive AWBW, overextending is a massive trap I fall into all the time. But in the end, PVP in Advance Wars is some of the most satisfying and enjoyable multiplayer experiences I've had. Hope you all enjoy these tips from the Egg Man!
I need a bit of advice, and since you seem too know a lot about overextending, you seem too be the best person too ask the question: how do I know when I’m overextending?
@@art-games6230 when you are 1 turn away from enemy reinforcement it's a good sign of overextending. since enemy can counter build you and be effective on the very next day while you still need to wait for your reinforcement and if you want to counter build the opponent, il will take a lot of turn. the only way to attack opponent bas eis when you heavily outnumber the enemy and has good backup/reinforcement
@@art-games6230 A good habit to develop is to paste the map somewhere (like Paint) and count movement from every enemy base as if they were producing regular tanks, then trace a line on the farthest tiles a enemy tank could reach in 2 turns, to divide the map in two parts: enemy territory, and your side of the map. Then, once you have sit on your income and number advantage for long enough, you can move in for the finish.
I think it’s important to point out that these tips are with a human opponent in mind. In the campaign they are useful too, but not all of them in every mission. For example, I found Infantry spam on the Mission where Sonja has to take down Adders fortress to be mostly useless once the first initial wave of Adders troops was destroyed and instead I opted for Rockets spam to shoot down the Mini Cannons.
I actually used infantry spam with great effect against the AI actually. Now admittedly it mostly works in maps filled with properties and fairly small, but those adorable meat shields are pretty useful. Plus, it can also work because the AI has absolutely no sense of convenience, they often built a recon even if you don't play in fog of war and is not an early stage of the game and a tank at the moment would be more convenient. Or building a rocket while you have one of your units pretty much camping the base. Keep on mind, I'm still talking about the AI, obviously a human player with some experience or game sense would actually build something in response to your tactics (or yield when it's clear they can't win).
@@Mangs1337 any chance you could make a guide with general tips for beating the AI in Campaign/War Room? That would be appropriate given how many new players we're getting. I know some, like baiting its hatred for APC's and using Neotanks to scare it away, but I'm sure there are plenty of ways to manipulate it that I'm not aware of. I'm sure you could use a lot of the footage from your campaign streams to make it.
I believe the channel is no more since but there was a video about Duo Falls, the player rushed for a Neotank early which allowed him to steamroll the enemy forces in the early game to secure most of the middle, the AI never had an appropriate response before the player reinforced his position. The AI doesn't use it's troops effectively (in more than one sense) , you can still get away with it in Dual Strike, especially with a Megatank since it's a magnet for the AI at times.
I'm glad that Reboot camp has in voice acting an official pronounciation for "Kanbei" so that I can say that an AW expert's mistake is calling him "Come By"
I made a comment in this section, stating that folks need to get off of the: "You must pronounce this and that, according to this and that." There are more important things to be concerned about in life than Tomāto, Tomáto.
@@gamermanzeake I made this more as a tongue-in-cheek comment than anything. I also agree with you in the sense that I am indeed someone living in the western world where facts are what people make of them or get provided to them by sources of propaganda. I think the reason that Kanbei bothers me so much is that Japanese is a particularly rigid language, wherein the order of pen strokes when writing Hiragana or Katakana matters and syllabic structures really only have one rigid pronunciation. カンベエ Breaks down into Ka N Be I. The english localization team back then clearly wanted something that wasn't a giant mouthful the way Kikuchiyo is and that played nicer with the character limitations of english charactger limits, and so went with a reference to one of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's top military advisors.
@@gamermanzeake There is a difference between having fun with puns and blatantly ignoring language rules... Two main reasons are: 1. Thanks for the shoutout Mangs and welcome to all the new Advance Wars players! You have only scratched the tip of the Advance Wars content iceberg and I'm jealous of the journey you're about to have!
The last point is actually true for basically any competitive game (or sport etc.). It's easy to think you're good when limiting yourself to the bubble of your social entourage, but more often than not you're barely even scratching the surface, which really good players are only to eager to demonstrate.
Honestly, this is the reason I'm not buying Reboot Camp. I WANT to play against randos in PvP so I can strengthen my gameplay. Stomping the CPU gets boring after a while.
Hey did they have any plans to ad a real multiplayer later ? I don't have friends that plays Advance Wars and it kinda saden me not being able to play online
The exception to mech spam is if you're playing in a map with a lot of rough terrain. In areas where the other units won't have as much mobility, mechs don't care and will keep trudging along through mountains as if they were fields.
I learned that in predeployed mission, always capture cities You never know when healing your tanks and recons is gonna come in handy and the deeper the better for certain missions
As a bonus, it keeps your infantry and mechs busy, healthy, and away from the front until the path to cap the HQ is clear. Treat them like pawns you intend to promote.
That's universally a good idea, regardless of whether it is pre-deployed or not. Of course, merging works as well, but it is always good to have repair capacity on top of that.
Just a note: A lot of those rules don't apply to certain missions of the campaign. Sometimes, you don't want to produce infantry at all and in fact, want to base skip so you can save up to build a missile to zone out a Fighter. By zoning out the fighter, you can keep your only battle copter safe for one extra turn so that you can successfully cap the only far out factory the enemy can get to and strip the enemy from producing units. Regarding indirects, if you're spamming infantry, you probably can spam indirects because your infantry can shield your indirects. Just make sure you have something to shield the indirects, and watch the indirect become the key to your wall.
The tip you bring up with infantry is so on point it’s even true in real life. Even in the age of drones and loitering munitions, it’s often the boots on the ground that get things done. Good luck rescuing those hostages with a fighter jet, best wishes taking a city with only tanks. Ground is never gained and taken until the boots hit the ground.
@@skootmeister3994 learn what? Not to resist occupation? Lmao. You'd think that Isreal would be able to target people, with their access to US advanced weaponry. Either they are extreme incompetent, remember, not even Nazi Germany killed 100 journalists.. or, the IDF are just that bad at their job.
New Player: When should I build Missiles? Mangs: Never. NP: But what if- Mangs: *Never*. NP: I’m playing Grit, facing Eagle and Hachi, in fog of war, with a good tree location I can defend and resupply it, including being able to block adjacent locations that helps me apply pressure against both opponents while defending my HQ. Mangs: Fine, but if it gets destroyed anyway Lash gets your Switch.
Solid tips! One note: you say that spamming indirects is bad, but you don't clearly explain why that is. It's mainly bad because they take heavy damage and can't fire after moving, and I think that would be helpful to explain. Maybe an in-depth video on indirect strategies would be nice!
I've been watching you for years, I played through all the games (still playing through Reboot Camp), so I wouldn't call myself a novice, but I still find this video helpful. Thank you for the video, Mangs.
I just want to mention that I find it cute that in many of the mistakes Mangs put clips of his streams making those mistakes, it already shows that even someone who has been playing for so many years can still make those mistakes, not only newbies, it's something that we must all visualize when aiming to improve :D
Most of these only apply to PVP. The War Room is a whole other beast where a lot of these recommendations break down, especially the infantry spam, base skipping and "stay in your defensive position". Overall more of a list of things to prepare for AWBW than improving at the games. Also mistake #2 at 1:21 is missing from the chapter list.
I’m not going to lie, I will try to play war room maps with other cos I’m interested in, but for some of those other maps, I will not blame you if you break out sturm or max
im always a bit nervous when it comes to doing online pvp in strategy games, but im giving myself more time to learn the units the CO's and niche stuff before i go about it.
Another base tip is which base you use, if you have one close to the enemy highly prioritize combat vehicles on it, leave the further back for fast moving or infantry. Even to the debateable disadvantage of base skipping Another good tip is explaining that artillery is always less useful when on the offense, you can counter attack by luring powerful vehicles to attack infantry or APC's and getting a powerful first shot with a prepositioned artillery unit, artillery shines on the defensive or choke points and you can fight Med tanks with infantry and Arty if you're good enough like me 😂
I love Advance Wars. One of my favorite series! I've only ever played the single player campaigns and a little war room stuff, though, and I had no idea there even was a competitive scene until your videos started popping up! If there's one thing I've learned from them..... it's that I have no interest in competitive Advance Wars. Like, at all. Not even a little bit. I do just fine at the campaign's, but like- while I don't totally forgo infantry, I don't make nearly as many of them as I apparently should, because like.... at a certain point it starts becoming a HASSLE. Making and moving that many units? It starts piling up real quick, and as matches progress I tend to focus more on making Big units, with a barebones amount of infantry for capping. "Make and move infantry on every single one of your bases every single turn" immediately seems like it'd suck all the fun out of the game for me. That said, even if I'm not interested in doing it myself- still been lovin' watching your stuff! It's cool getting so much insight into this stuff, even if I'm not interested in doing it myself.
I will say watching your competitive videos helped me alot, I noticed how much easier a time i've had since playing the gba aw2 a few months back (played ds and dor before that) and using proper build order and especially apc movement, I was doing way better
As a newer player whose already gravitating towards indirect units I've started looking at them as a important spacing tool on the backline as a rule. It can often make trying to sneak into your main base impossible if a indirect is cleverly placed in a city or forest (Depending on the map state) so long as it's supported by an APC and isn't out on the front lines. If your using Grit you can even play chicken with your Super CO power and keep your opponent guessing. I think I'm going to put a lot of focus into mastering them in the future since Area Denial is probably my favorite way to play Advance Wars.
Got it on launch day, been loving it! I remember having a friend who only used Kanbei and Colin. So I started mostly using Sami and Grit because infantry, mechs, and indirect units did a surprisingly good job of shutting him down. No matter how hard Kanbei's medium and neotanks hit, a couple of rockets will waste it and it can only hit 1 unit.
While I haven't gotten in to AWBW myself, Advanced Wars has always been something I love and i've fallen into these a few times (kid me loved Colin's Power of Money and never understood how good Gold Rush actually was). A lot of these tips seem simple but they're pretty easy to fall into. One tip to trying out new COs and a personal challenge im currently in the process of myself right now on the reboot: Try to beat every war room map with every CO at least once (it's harder than it sounds). While the CPU isn't the greatest practice against human opponents, it's hard to ignore just the amount of practice you get using different COs in different conditions. Obviously you wouldn't use Drake for example on a map where you'd deploy a lot of air units but he doesn't have to be played solely on a sea based map either, as he suffers no penalties for land units. There's also the aspect that some maps will absolutely punish you for a wrong move and can quickly go south if you play poorly and have an unfavorable CO.
You mean beating every war room map while using different COs, right? Not beat each map with every single CO? Because I like that advice, picking a good CO solves a third of your match. Although I wouldn't use Sonja in AW1 war room, ever. It's completely pointless
@@bvd_vlvd For the most part, yes, I mean while using different COs. My personal challenge is everyone, as unless you watch yourself, you could easily fall into a habit of always picking your main CO on every map and then 2 others, but i used to do at least 3 COs for every map. I do agree using Sonja is kinda pointless on the AW1 versions, as it's basically like playing Andy without the healing, but this advice I should have specified is mostly for the AW2 versions of the maps, as that's largely going to be closer to the version that AWBY for example is going to use.
game seems far easier than when i played original for gba still have it on my bookshelf. Absolutely loved it, going on school trios passes the gba between 4 of us playing vs. wish more people had this game back in the day i still remember playing it moving my infantry units walking through walmart. i wasnt waiting to play haha
Omg the advice against overextending is really helpful! I never thought about the fact that your army will grow faster than your opponent's if you have higher income, and that you can use that to win a war of attrition.
Thank you. I am guilting of doing some of these things. Like spamming mechs (especially playing as Sami) and spamming only indirects (when playing as grit). I’ve been playing since this game came out when I was in high school and I still suck at this game.
I have a bit of a dilemma with the first tip, in the campaign the maps are really chokepointy, causing a Russian-style traffic jam of infantry, or I don’t produce enough infantry in these situations or I make too many of them
I just hate the maps that are extreme choke points were AI side gets alot of roads while you have none. The Adder factory mission he will frequently make rockets that can easily get into position while you have to slog through it. Annoying to get around because the normal B-copter solution is all the way on the other side of the map fighting to destroy pipe seam
Probably goes without saying, but for near all of these don't take them as hard rules, more a rule of thumb. For instance, yes, you could be building something on every base every turn, but if that leaves your economy in shambles and some of those bases are so far back that the unit won't see combat till the end of the game perhaps leave that one alone for a moment and see if you can build something that will make an impact on the situation closer to the front line. If the enemy has you holed up in a choke point then at a certain point throwing more tanks at it won't do anything more than sustain, consider saving for some indirect that can open up the choke point, or for some b-copters or bombers to go around the choke point if the enemy doesn't have much anti-air, play to whatever the enemy is neglecting, force them to adapt to meet you cause if you are controlling the beat of the game you are far more likely to win. Again, everything in the video is good rule of thumb, but you need to think about your situation and figure out what is going to give you actual impact. Sometimes having high numbers will win you the game, and sometimes you can hold off a legion with a skeleton crew at a choke point so you can force a situation elsewhere.
I was not planning on buying this game, least of all for 60 bucks. But your content on the game this past week has sold me on it. Nintendo owes you something for helping to drive sales.
I won't play AWBW, as it isn't my cup of tea. Not a fan of some of the ways they handle the site. And I'm not a fan of hyper competitive scenes. I also believe it a bit pretentious to tell folks how he should play a single-player-first game. Mangs' advice here is quite good, but I can't say the same of a lot of those so-called pros and grandmasters on a site that means diddly.
This is a perfect guide for anyone not just beginning players. If you're new to Advance Wars, definitely watch this! I will add something that's a good idea in relation to over-extending that Deejus said as an easy guideline to follow. You don't want to be within striking distance of an enemy tank on a base. So if you're more than 7 squares away from an enemy base, you should be good.
@@Posby95 It's not just the unit itself that you have to worry about. It's likely an opponent has an army built up around their base or have another base nearby. You could end up fighting within that range which will put you at a disadvantage.
Mangs, I wish to battle you on AWBW so you could show off my mistakes for beginners, I consider myself between a beginner and intermediate. It would make my day since you are my favorite Advance Wars RUclipsr.
Somebody should tell Grimm Guy already that he does a crucial beginner mistake. Dude, pick flak already, will you. But in all honesty, I love advance wars, and the reboot camp made me want to get into the competitive scene, and for that I'm very grateful for every piece of advice I can get. Also, I don't have a problem with indirects, I have one with Recons coming near my indirects, shut up, I don't need help.
11th Not checking opposing hero power meters via the Intel tab 12th Moving an infantry to a bad spot and waiting with it instead of capping with it. Then resetting the turn and doing it again. Even vets do this. Amirite, Mangs? :D
i am a beginner and think i have one more good tipp for Beginner you need to look where to position your troops if you want to attack someone like Mangs at 6:19 with his recon
When I first started playing this genre back on the GBA, I'll admit I made some mistakes when approaching it since grid-based games was my weakest link. When I replayed the OGs, I learned my playstyle and after watching some videos, it made me want to get back into it. I saw bone headed mistakes that made me want to yell at people through the monitor.
As someone who by default tends to value quality over quantity, it took me a while to adapt to Advance Wars. But yeah, overtime I learned it's better to have three infantries over one Mech.
I definitely like playing with the different CO's because it does force you to think differently each time you do. I definitely like Kanbei because his units hit so much harder and take so much more punishment but I don't like using him all the time simply because his units are so expensive. I personally like using Colin because you can easily spam units with him. These games really are a blast and I've been having a lot of fun playing through them again on the Switch.
Picking the same CO again and again is definitely one of the worst mistakes you can make. Don't skip anyone; they may surprise you with how fun they are and how much they can teach you. Even Flak has a place. Play a Flak mirror match against a friend when you're both drunk. It's hilarious.
My current (3rd) opponent in the current FOG tournament in AWBW should have seen this video because for now they did some mistakes they could have avoided, the matchup is bad enough because they play Jake while I play Drake, while it's day 18 I've spotted two of it's neotanks but I have the unit count and value advantage (33 kill, 15 death), I get 31 000 gold per turn while they earn 24 000, I'm capping 1 of his cities, unless he interupt with an 8 neotank (attacked by my Drake B.copter), wich next turn will get attacked by an artilery. My opponent played 96 match and his ranked 823.74 overall, 781.38 for FOW. Meanwhile one of my opponent had +2000 match played and somehow I've won. Hell he didn't even use any power while I've used a SUPER once and I'm at tsunami level, nothing prepared both of us, I'm legit scared because they had to win 2 match before facing me so maybe they are like Deejus. FOW match are scary but I suck at non FOW match.
Hey Mangs, I know you probaply don't want to make any videos about awbw right now, but could you perhaps do a replay commentary on that match vs Nightmare you just showed some footage of? It looks like a real banger, and a good lesson on indirect usage.
Watching your vids has helped me understand how to get better at Advance Wars, ever since I learned about your channel. One thing I appreciate is how some of those mistakes can happen in other competitive genres besides Tactics like Advance Wars, especially the last two. #9 can be a common mistake especially for RTS and MOBAs. #10 is a mistake I personally make a lot, because I LOVE playing fighting games with my friends and family, but like you said, getting better competitively requires opening up to challenging other strangers, not only because they might be better than me, but also they might have different playstyles from what I'm used to.
My biggest thing is I play mostly alone so I end up over stressing when I'm not getting S Ranks even though I'm still winning with at least B at a minimum and it makes me feel like I just suck. It just makes me overthink my own skills and decisions.
Ranking system is a little stupid, try spamming cheapest units on all your bases/ports/airports at the last few turns to patch up the technique rank at least
Yeah don't break a sweat about it. Good ranking in mission often require you to at least have a good feel for the AI of each map. But in Fog of war it also require you to actually know the enemy position and movement in advance so you can plan around them. And as a good rule of thumb like many strategy game the campaign barely teach you how to play a standart fair VS game because they basically never happen during the campaign
lots of these tips are for PVP. In campaign levels, honestly your best bet is dont spam unit, every second turn build a MD tank in AW1 and build Neo/Bombers every 2nd turn in AW2 and you'll steamroll the AI
Bit late to the party but I think the biggest beginner mistake is playing Versus like you'd play Campaign or War Room. I thought I'd consider myself pretty good at Advance Wars - I'd been playing it on-and-off since my childhood - But as soon as I was able to play against some friends who didn't play the Campaign nor the game nearly as much as me, I got my ass utterly handed to me. They hadn't learnt the cheap AI-abusing tactics that I had cemented into my head.
Here I am, watching this despite being a 'veteran', because I'm still not very good at Advance Wars. ^^; I have at least gotten past all of Kanbei's missions and only have one 'A' rank to my name, with the rest being S ranks though! Like, right from the get go, I can tell you that I do often neglect infantry. I am usually like 'ok I've got enough' and then focus on churning out tanks or saving up for rockets or medium tanks instead. Like, I'll move the tanks forward, keeping the infantry safe at the back, and capture enemies properties as we can basically secure them. I will admit though, at the beginning of the match? My first turns are, assuming I can afford them, infantry and an APC. Send that APC forward with the infantry to capture some of the far away bases and cities and secure them before the enemy gets to them, since the enemy will focus on properties close to them and then spread out. And yeah, I'm also not great at planning out my units. I will, quite often, build a medium tank and nothing else. Just blow all my money on one big unit. Admittedly, if you are playing as Max or Kanbei, one medium tank can go a LONG way, basically killing anything that isn't another medium tank in one shot. I don't have a problem with spamming indirects... if anything, I have a problem in not building enough of them. ^^; I will say that yeah, for the most part, missles are just... trash. I'll use them if the mission gives them to me, but for the most part, anti-airs are your best bet against air units. Because air units can all move so far, if they can see you have missles, they'll just either target it immediately so your investment is wasted... or simply dance and weave staying both out of range and too close. Mech spamming also isn't an issue with me... I tend to just build regular infantry instead. As stated I do tend to use Kanbei and Max, so it's a mix of 'all units are more expensive' and 'tanks are way better'. Mechs can do a lot of damage... but they're also pretty squishy. Only playing one CO.... Yeah I'm guilty of that. Max is just so good in Advance Wars 1. And when I unlock her I plan on maining Lash. I would also say Advance Wars is more complex than chess. The fact that your opponent can keep creating units, and that you have more units than you have chess pieces, does mean it's more complex.
Imagine a specific kind of AW professional, that wants to challenge himself by allowing a noob to pick a Tier 0 CO while the professional intentionally handicaps himself with a Tier 4 CO.
Playing trough the reboots myself. I had the game in 2001 when i was 13 yrs old and loved them. However... i never rly realized until today that the story is basically "hahahahaha lets kill each other for fun while our commanders are buddies" lel. Being a soldier in wars-world is a bad job
As someone who loves indirect. Yeah, its true. Spamming indirects pretty early and in large numbers is a bad move. Which is why i tend to build up my front line forces first and slowly push them towards the meat grinder.
It should be said that the CPU will always throw out their CO or SCO Powers the moment they are able to especially if you are doing the Campaign for the first time, and unfortunately that's when most players develop that habit. I know it's turn based but think of it like a Street Fighter Super Meter, you can use it, but you should only use it if you think the time is right. A lot of times, it only takes one good COP turn to secure the win.
Actually I might need to reverify that. But I am fairly confident that now in Reboot camp the AI wil no longer use its power when it is immediatly alvailable, it will only use it if it can get some amount of value out of it. That amount of value can be destroying 600 coin worth of unit but they do need the bait.
Hey Mangs, now that Re-Boot Camp is out, could you create a sort of 'review', comparing what you like and dislike about the GBA originals compared to the Switch game? Like, in which areas are the GBA games superior, and where's the Switch the better option - that sort of thing. I think it'd be interesting to watch.
I main Grit and Nell back then. But i dont tell them i can play Drake, Olaf and Andy very well too.Good way to throw them off. Also in DoR i love to play as tabitha and sit on my CO power at full for mind games. Also #9 mistake is spot on. I cant count how many time i failed to finish someone in a 4 player FFA match cause my forces are near his base. Few more turns and youll see me retreating back and saving whatever i can save and goes to defensive mode again

A lot of people make the mistake of joining the infanry first, losing its turn
What you should do is capp first, then you join the other infantry
Its a very small thing, but doing to former definetly will make you lose some cities that you would like to have
Which is why I said that it should be called Capjoin.
@@bienhy5120 thanks!
Absolute QUALITY editing on this one Davis, good job man
I think it’s important to point out that these tips are with a human opponent in mind.
That is true. The campaign does require you to play a little more differently.
Well yeah, cause the campaign missions play more like puzzles
Two main reasons are:
1. Without paying attention You can be misunderstood which will greatly lower the effectiveness of Your communication
2. Misspronouncing names can be a sign of disrespect for people and culture and it may make You look like a jerk 😜
In the end it is all up to You but to give You an example: "gamerman" is not the same as "gay-merman". Neither is bad or good but I think You would prefer one over other 😂
Thanks for the shoutout Mangs and welcome to all the new Advance Wars players!
>Mistake #10 only playing against friends
>Reboot Camp only lets you play against friends
F
LOL
Only online.
I wish i know that before i bought the game.
The exception to mech spam is if you're playing in a map with a lot of rough terrain. In areas where the other units won't have as much mobility, mechs don't care and will keep trudging along through mountains as if they were fields.
I learned that in predeployed mission, always capture cities
You never know when healing your tanks and recons is gonna come in handy and the deeper the better for certain missions
Meh that a nice tip
You have too be patient if you do that
As a bonus, it keeps your infantry and mechs busy, healthy, and away from the front until the path to cap the HQ is clear.
Treat them like pawns you intend to promote.
That's universally a good idea, regardless of whether it is pre-deployed or not. Of course, merging works as well, but it is always good to have repair capacity on top of that.
@@a-s-greig a lot of people sacrifice pawns in the opening in gambits, should you do that too in AW?
#2 There's a term for that: Map presence.
Without map presence you have less means to control the battlefield.
As someone who uses neotanks as meatshields for my infantry, this was extremely helpful
Ehm, what?
I mean that is good if you need to capture certain cities and there are no counters to the neotanks nearby.
@@Posby95 yeah but if you have enough neotanks too block enemy units and the enemy doesn’t have any counters too them then something weird is going on
You're on the right track, just do it the other way around. Deejus has a fantastic video on infantry walls, it sure stepped up my game a lot.
(just to be clear this was obviously a joke lol)
As someone who cannot advance wars for the life of him this is appreciated. Thank you Mangs.
This is me
The tip you bring up with infantry is so on point it’s even true in real life. Even in the age of drones and loitering munitions, it’s often the boots on the ground that get things done.
Good luck rescuing those hostages with a fighter jet, best wishes taking a city with only tanks. Ground is never gained and taken until the boots hit the ground.
Or you could be like Isreal and kill ten times the number of hostages saved 😅

New Player: When should I build Missiles?
Mangs: Never.
NP: But what if-
Mangs: *Never*.
I made one in my current awbw match, sue me Mangs!
Luckily mangs often makes these mistakes on camera so his viewers can learn!
Even to the debateable disadvantage of base skipping
Another good tip is explaining that artillery is always less useful when on the offense, you can counter attack by luring powerful vehicles to attack infantry or APC's and getting a powerful first shot with a prepositioned artillery unit, artillery shines on the defensive or choke points and you can fight Med tanks with infantry and Arty if you're good enough like me 😂
2:24 idk about that, I actually underlooked indirect units for years when I started
Yes! Thank you Mangs. I beat Dual Strike a while back, but I am in no means good at the game.
A beginner mistake I always do: Forgetting to finish capturing your COM Tower before attacking haha.
game seems far easier than when i played original for gba still have it on my bookshelf. Absolutely loved it, going on school trios passes the gba between 4 of us playing vs. wish more people had this game back in the day i still remember playing it moving my infantry units walking through walmart. i wasnt waiting to play haha
I’ll be sure to keep these in mind. I actually have access to these games now I can finally play them rather than just watch them
The beginners can have a little indirect attacking. As a treat.
6:24
Instructions unclear, i ended up becoming GrimmGuy
I have a bit of a dilemma with the first tip, in the campaign the maps are really chokepointy, causing a Russian-style traffic jam of infantry, or I don’t produce enough infantry in these situations or I make too many of them
Yeah, these are mostly AWBW centric.
Nintendo owes you something for helping to drive sales.
outstanding video eggboy! it can be tough to flourish at AW without tips like this so I hope people get the message of this video
I’ve been in AW games since 2004,
but I’m watching this video anyway.
I think you may want to add a warning to that final tip:
and if you want to *continue* playing against your friends, maybe stay away from awbw
Great tips . One infantry per term, base skipping not advised. A great draft for those that are beginners thank you for sharing
I don't see why that's an useful guideline. New units don't move immediately; you can retreat a little bit before they get the chance to strike.
Now I want to see:
Absolute beginner Sturm
vs.
Grandmaster Flack
#1 Mistake better be taking advice from Mangs, especially if it has anything to do with infantry.
Mistake #7 - One-Tricking a CO
GrimmGuy: "And I took that personally."
Beginner mistake number 11 invading blue moon continent during the winter
Somebody should tell Grimm Guy already that he does a crucial beginner mistake.
Dude, pick flak already, will you.
But in all honesty, I love advance wars, and the reboot camp made me want to get into the competitive scene, and for that I'm very grateful for every piece of advice I can get.
Also, I don't have a problem with indirects, I have one with Recons coming near my indirects, shut up, I don't need help.
6:01 if people somehow don't know this, recon is the best scouts in advance wars and it makes sense since recon is short for reconnaissance
11th Not checking opposing hero power meters via the Intel tab
12th Moving an infantry to a bad spot and waiting with it instead of capping with it. Then resetting the turn and doing it again. Even vets do this. Amirite, Mangs? :D
I won't buy reboot but I'm so happy of this relise because Mangs will drop out such mor content and believe me I love his content😊😊😊
i am a beginner and think i have one more good tipp for Beginner
you need to look where to position your troops if you want to attack someone like Mangs at 6:19 with his recon
A NEW ERA OF ADVANCE WARS CONTENT HAS STARTED!
Beginner mistake #1: Paying Nintendo $60+ for 2 GBA games with minorly improved graphics and a mediocre multiplayer/mapmaking system
Thanks for listing my play style.
Been playing since GBA.
I'm so happy to see new advance wars players now, finally the series is being recognized for it's greatness.
Picking the same CO again and again is definitely one of the worst mistakes you can make. Don't skip anyone; they may surprise you with how fun they are and how much they can teach you.
Even Flak has a place. Play a Flak mirror match against a friend when you're both drunk. It's hilarious.
hey mangs, thank you for all the AW content over the years! really scratched my itch. did you like the remake? is it worth it?
Beginners Mistake: Knowing what you are doing.
"If I don't know what I'm doing, neither does my enemy!" - Sun Tzu, Art of Advance Wars
Number 10 be like: avoid only playing with your friends.
Nintendo: Let's force people to use friend codes to play :)
Alright, but what is a airport?
Thx For The Tips Mangs!
3:30 I learned that the hard way.
Does it sound like "He he he, Kanbei!" Orrrrr "H-h-h, Kanbei!" 😂
Mistake 1.5 - Dont do Mangs infantry.
Good reminders even for more experienced players. And a great thumbnail btw, nice work.
lots of these tips are for PVP. In campaign levels, honestly your best bet is dont spam unit, every second turn build a MD tank in AW1 and build Neo/Bombers every 2nd turn in AW2 and you'll steamroll the AI
I'll probably make another one for the campaign.
When I first played the game years ago...
I full frontal attacked Lash during her Super Power... Worst decision specially from a Andy main.
I see you still haven't gotten over Beginner Mistake # 11: Calling the game *Advanced* Wars
Here is my advance wars advice: Even if he says "kanbay" in the voice lines. Everyone and their mother calls him "kanbeiy"
Is there a video where you go through the practical differences (if any) between the remakes and the originals?
Imagine a specific kind of AW professional, that wants to challenge himself by allowing a noob to pick a Tier 0 CO while the professional intentionally handicaps himself with a Tier 4 CO.
Can’t wait to show this video to my good friend, Mangs. He’s been suffering at Advanced Wars for a while, so maybe this video will help him!
What a wonderful tips video, very well made and useful!!!
Great video! Thank you so much! You're the best!
Excellent video, very informative.
Playing trough the reboots myself. I had the game in 2001 when i was 13 yrs old and loved them. However... i never rly realized until today that the story is basically "hahahahaha lets kill each other for fun while our commanders are buddies" lel. Being a soldier in wars-world is a bad job
That's why I love the cardboard map design. It proves that it's just a game after all
You forgor the most useful tip which even high level players never forget, knowing what an airport is
yeah, trying different cos is very important
I'm so used to juggers extra firepower that playing sonja is almost confusing
Tell me about it, was playing reboot camp and was wondering why my bombers weren't one shotting everything, answer I wasn't Max. XD
As someone who loves indirect. Yeah, its true. Spamming indirects pretty early and in large numbers is a bad move. Which is why i tend to build up my front line forces first and slowly push them towards the meat grinder.
Yeah the game is a lot harder then I thought it would be.
I'm on the final mission though
Just do what it takes to win even if it sounds cheap, that's the only strategy you need
Same for online.
I fall in the trap of misusing my CO powers sometimes lol
