Definitely picked this one up, I was particularly frustrated when they pushed this one back because of the real-life war in Ukraine. I'm really glad it finally got a releaseand I hope it does well enough to warrant a remake of the sequels as well.
Very good review, especially for those who haven’t played the originals. Hard disagree with the sound design - it’s a 20/20 because the amount of details they put into remaking the CO themes is insanely well done. If I compare it to FE engage its worlds better. Maybe a minus 1 for the dialogue not being entirely voiced, but then again this isn’t a social sim like FE.
Preordered this one digitally. Enjoying it a lot but there are a few points that I think could’ve been improved. Obviously the Multiplayer and Touchscreen ability should’ve been enabled in a proper 2023 way. But the thing that kind of bothers me is the voice acting. I mean, sometimes there are 3 lines of text and they pronounce 2 or 1, why not everything? I mean, c’mon, it’s not the 90’s anymore. Why can’t they make it work properly and always go halfway or not even halfway. This is pretty much all that bothers me, Multiplayer/Touchscreen/Voice acting - aside from that this game is a proper 4.5/5 star!
I'm mostly a handheld player. I went through an endless amount of GBA games and more. I've seen the good and the bad. This was a quality game as well as the second one! This remake is well done and I can't believe I beat the first one already. I've been struggling with "gamer burnout" syndrome but this gem really kept my attention. Looking forward to starting the second game. I recall it being even harder than the first.
It’s a great game to pick up and play for a few minutes and also easy to sink hours in. I love the map maker. I got the first one for Christmas the year it came out. I sneakily sliced open the box and played it on my Gameboy Advance SP for a few minutes and my pulse was racing that my parents could bust open the door and I’d be found out for knowing Santa was fake and playing the game when I wasn’t supposed to be. I turned it on and started going through the tutorial and checking out the graphics and sound. I was blown away. I resealed and carefully taped the wrapping paper back up and put it under some other gifts under the tree to hide it. On Christmas Day I opened it quickly to avoid my folks discovering that I already opened it and knew what awaited me. I acted surprised but my gratitude was genuine. Pulling off the great Christmas heist made it even sweeter. The wait for Christmas was long as that taste of Advance Wars lingered in my winter dreams every day. I was still thrilled to finally open it Christmas morning and to see the full box with the plastic wrap making the artwork so shiny and to look at the manual and get to play it. A great Christmas memory; lots of my Christmas memories are getting Nintendo games and systems during holidays. I remember as a kid waiting for my birthday and Christmas and really having to choose carefully which games to buy. Advance Wars was a good pick and we played multiplayer with 1 cart and 4 players several times as well as single player passing the system on a few sleepovers. Good times. I’m loving the remake here and I’m glad to have such fond memories. Your pal, Andy… 🔧 Jk I’m Dan
@@exzisd Haha! That is a good story. We also would pass the game around to play. Turns would get so long that we would have a show or movie playing on TV. I also loved using Eagle so it was even more painful for them with the power to move all mechanical vehicles again in the same turn! I snagged the Megaman Battle Network collection as well. This has been a great month for fans of past games they loved and newcomers. Oh and let's not forget the Final Fantasy pixel remaster! All 1-6 original games! I bought FF6 separate since I played the others already.
I really wish they kept the cel-shading style for the battlefield as well. It's not as good as traditional 2D animation would have been, but I feel the two distinct art styles clash too much as it is. In any case, I'll be waiting to pick this one up due to a massive backlog and upcoming Zelda, but I'll be getting it for sure.
playing it since release and I'm having a lot of fun. Sometimes a remake is all you need, the original was so good and this version really improves it.
Heads up for any potential physical version owners. As it is, there is no way to redeem eshop gold coins for physical version due to a strange error that redemption has expired (likely due to the prolonged delay for the game release).
I like that we get a remake, but I just can't with this mobile graphics, is like trying to be Zelda link's awakening but not getting there, I prefer the GBA's 100%
I think the original had more of a gritty realistic vibe. The remake looks more family friendly. In the original, the maps resembled a top down view of a real battlefield. The battlefield in the remake has a board game structure with grid lines. The gameplay is still fun but the new art style is too bright and colorful imo. Playing the original felt like you were fighting a real war with real soldiers. The remake feels like you’re playing a board game with toy soldiers and toy tanks.
WayForward did a fantastic job with this remake, the nostalgia hit's HARD, let me tell you, i missed this series SO much but i will say that i still do prefer the pixel art graphics with it. I have so many fond memories of this one, loved it back in 2002! Where does the time go?
I'm guessing/hoping there's a decent reason why there's no online matchmaking, but other than a couple of very minor niggles, I LOVE this game. Extra points for uncomplicated CO unlocks and re-playable missions without a full campaign restart. My fav is Dual Strike though, it'd be awesome to get a reboot (with extra content) of that.
I'm still butthurt that the 3DS missed an entry after the DS got the sublime Dual Strike and Days of Ruin titles. This series really benefitted from the 2nd screen.
So, just to be clear, the user created maps can only be shared with / downloaded from friends? If so, that puts me off this game completely. Imagine Super Mario Maker 2 without the ability to play other people's levels. It wouldn't have near the longevity or replay value it does, with loads of people playing it to this day. The devs really missed the mark on this one - at least if I'm understanding you correctly re: multiplayer options.
I liked the old art style and wished they would have just given it a modern touch. The price is kind of high too in my opinion. I'll wait for a sale. Thanks for another great review
Simply perfect. I loved it on the GBA - possibly the only game I actually finished - and there were times when an intense battle would be ending with the morning chorus as I'd played all night again! I'm a lot older now and so I won't play it late at night but already hours of happy play are there. And my aging eyes can see exactly why I am losing (or winning) now. 10/10 from me.
If you remember the link cable days. If you used one cartridge and the cable, it placed you on a very small, single map and was more of a skirmish than a full competitive game. Local multi-player with multiple controllers is an improvement (except for people who live alone like me) Though I'm not entirely sure of the lack of online Matchmaking. My guess is that it would be tough to manage a turn based strategy game in which people take a while with their turns. With how long fights go, I would think matching you up would take a really long time.
Can't believe Advance Wars is 20 years old, makes me feel old. I've never played the original so will get the remake eventually, cheers for the review.
Got this day of release, physical, preordered almost 2 years waiting. Played all of the originals and days of ruin. This remake is well done and a lot of fun.

Honestly reminds me of the MediEvil remake a few years back: literally the same game as before with a graphic overhaul that keeps the spirit of the original, and that's exactly what I wanted.
This one was definitely worth the $60 price tag. Two amazing classics with loads of content improved in every way possible imo. Now I'm just hoping that the two DS games get a similar remake.
One of my favorite Gba games , I put 100s of hours into all 3 of these titles...for a real good challenge its good to try and beat the game on the hardest setting..stunning game.
4:07 does anyone know if the design map is limited to a 15 by 10 area because that only 1/4 the size of the original game. Also does anyone know if all maps are smaller now
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS !!!!!! IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS REVIEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOOOOOO IM SO HYPED FOR THIS GAME NOW!! i was gonna wait for it to go on sale, but seeing as you have positive views, i'll trade in a game to get it!! Personally, i didnt play the original, but i still think the new animation style is cute and pleasant to the eyes. So THANK YOU for this review!!!!!
This isn't on my list to buy immediately, but I'm still super interested to give it a try! I actually like the art style, it's so vibrant and fun, but I also didn't know the games before this remake was announced, so I have no nostalgia for anything 😅 Which is also why I personally don't mind the price, although I'm gonna wait for a sale still, hehe 😁
Well maybe I talk cause I loved old advance wars games, if I can give you an advice try the old one with an emu, is super easy just don’t download viruses ahahah. Try it to have an idea on what game it is. This remake is awesome, the only negative thing I find but maybe is just my personal tought is the sound design of some units such as missile launcher, back days was much “ harder “ and “”realistic””. But you can’t know this ahahah but they did a lot of changes even with dynamic landscapes that change the background depends on what block you are close, example if you are fighting in a field block but behind it there is a city block, during the animation you will see skyscraper in background. It’s look simple but it’s a very hard game you must use your brain ahahah but is not impegnative
@@D.O.CanMusic I'm not interested in emulation, which is why I'm glad for NSO or remakes like this 😅 But I'm glad to hear this game makes you think, a little brain teaser is always great!:D
Price-wise, I feel like this game could be more bang for your buck if priced USD15-20 cheaper. Even if it's two games, it still is a remaster. The lower price range will make the games more accessible to new players, and will be a good indicator if the the playerbase would want a new game. Will look forward to the sale prices. On a separate now, I still wonder how much difference this and Tiny Metal has. They're almost the same at this point.
I’m in the camp of like the old art style in battles. In this one I have a hard time differentiating some units like the tank and the anti air tank. Units were very distinctive and clear as day in the original
Never played the original but I've always loved strategy games. I knew this was a must play because i heard so much praise about the original games. We really need a new Advance wars or a dual strike remake.
This and the Final Fantsy Tactics series are my favorite strategy/tactical RPGs. Can't wait to jump back in with Andy and the Orange Star crew. Now when are we getting that FFT port on Switch? Doesn't even have to be The War of the Lions edition, just give it to me. Although a HD-2D remake would be even better.
After playing this and than revisiting some missions in the originals they changed up missions for example the first mission has more troops in AW2 remaster and the second mission doesn’t have fog of war in the original but does in the remaster and also different troops wonder why they did that? The game also looks like it takes place on a game board but the original there was no backdrop like that. I’m not sure why they did that either.
@@aaroninman9759 I think he's talking about the ones that followed on DS, Dual Strike and Days of Ruin which also had Advance Wars in their titles. If Nintendo really wanted to get spicy they should release the GC and Wii Battalion Wars which were way ahead of their time for consoles.
@@outoftouchnetwork Battalion Wars was such an amazing franchise. I want a third game, but I’d easily take a remaster/re-release of the first two games as well
I'd say so! 1. In War Groove two units will always have the same stats regardless of who you play with. In Adcance Wars units' stats differ from cammander to commander. 2. In my opinion maps are more fun in Advance Wars.
Been waiting for this one. I'm not fussed about online so that honestly doesn't bother me, but hope it drops in price at some point as that is a little steep. Will definitely be picking it up at some point though.
Personally as someone who has both (Wargroove both on PC and Switch so I have played quite a bit), they are different enough for you to enjoy them both in a different way. I was scared of that too as It had been years since I tried It in the GBA and Game design has come a long way, But It is still brilliant
I'd say so! In Advance Wars unit's stats differ between commanders. So not only do commanders have different super powers, their units have different ranges, attack and defense too.
I played the original games and I loved them, but I played both GBA games on a friend's cartridge so my time with them was more limited than it could have been. When I got my DS though, I must've clocked some 200 hours into AW Dual Strike (and we haven't even gotten to Days of Ruin yet) so my memories of the franchise are nothing but good ones. I've gotten this remake and cheated it to the top of my backlog for nostalgia's sake, and am loving it, but I gotta say - it just makes me want a Dual Strike port more 😂
Great review! Looks like a good update of the Advance Wars series, but definitely too expensive. With this price tag, I'll stick with Warrgroove on the Switch. The old Advance Wars still plays perfectly on my trusty DS. 🤷🏼♂️
Honestly, it always baffles me when certain games don't use the Switch touch screen. It's such a missed potential that can make certain game mechanics very smooth.
Looking forward to this. Price and visuals are a sticking points for me. Especially after grabbing Wargroove for £12. I have some CEX credit so might splash on this. The gameplay looks wonderful - and that's what it's all about.
i loved advanced wars series though my fav one was advanced wars dual strike, way more cos to choose from my only wish is that they remake that and bring some of the cooler units from days of ruin and add them into the mix then ill be complete XD now my only thing that really is a negative in my opinion was the sound from units for example aa units, some tanks, battle ships as well as artillery things that should sound soooo cool just was lacking that oomph ya know i wish they at least made a setting for unit sounds thats adjustable so maybe for those like me who wanna hear more of the units firing at eachother a bit louder :)
Loved these games on my Advance. Will be getting this next month and can’t wait to play it again with the updated graphics. Shame about the online mode though.
I want to like it, I've watched a ton of reviews and I just can't seem to like it.. the fuel and ammo management kinda scare me, and the art style really doesn't appeal to me.. x.x
Just play as jess and never bother with the fuel mechanic. When you play as the other commanders, most units have enough gas to do what they need to do without running out or dying anyway so gas usually isn't an issue. APC units also supply gas to every unit they sit next to for free. I've never had an issue in the campaign with gas
I never played Advance Wars 1 and 2, but I did play Advance Wars: Dual Strike on the 3DS and I loved that - but these games kinda feel like a step backwards... I'd be all in for a remake of or sequel to Dual Strike, of course...
Love the dovetail joints on the corners of the board... nice little "tabletop" touch Bit of a mish mash graphically, looks really crisp, but I kinda miss the GBA pixel art
I can see $50 for a reboot, not $60. That's ridiculous. They really didn't didn't seem to do anything as far as remakes are concerned. Blades of Time for example, isn't talked about on the switch, however it's an old PS2/PS3 game, and it's only $20 and I'm not sure what they did to it either. The force unleashed is an old Wii game and i don't remember how much it was, however i don't think it was more than $50. I'm going to wait for a sale for this one.
for me max 20$ for this. 60€ at nintendo shop is huge joke. Imagine Nintendo doing for example game like a God of War. They will price it for 200€ probably in basic edition
It is a shame that there is no Japanese version. I noticed in the trailers, Asu wears her Japanese version glasses, and her U.S. version uniform. WayForward released River City Girls Zero based on Shin Nekketsu Kouha: Kunio tachi no Banka with the Original English and Local English option.
I LOVED the original but this is a hard pass for me unfortunately - especially at $60 USD. I remember thinking this game had such a unique art style back in the day. The new style looks cookie cutter/generic now. Sure it's HD but lost it's personality for me. I'm sure the gameplay is still great but idk man... maybe if it's on sale for $40 I'll cop it. I appreciate the review!
I played both the old ones and the remakes on my switch and I can honestly say after about half an hour with both I went with the new versions , I'll take the pretty new graphics anyday over the old ones
I really miss the old style animation. It’s looked so much better plus you could tell which units were on the map!! The black hole army units and planes look too similar
imagine paying a sub for ninty's online services and they remake such a game without adding online matchmaking. i know the game's fun but it looks like a cheap phone game
Is it just me, or is Grit (the sniper character) a parody of Lee Harvey Oswald (a Southerner who defected to Russia from America, though Oswald himself later returned to America before taking out Kennedy but he probably did that on orders from the CIA not Russia)?
The West never got Famicom Wars lines of games until Advance Wars. Now, AW1+2RBC is ONLY released on THE WEST. There is no planned release for Asian market including Japan as of now.
@@Astronic that is a good idea actually if you are unsure! They do play similarly but personally I prefer Advance Wars. Not that Wargroove is bad or anything. I just like Advance Wars more.
Wayforward really did an amazing job with this game! The attention to detail, the music and even the battle feel fantastic! The only downside however is that there's apparently no way to save a versus battle in progress and online is not only 1 vs 1 but also with friend only which is a BIG downside. Also, in the final mission of the sexond campaign, there's a weird bug that if your opponent use his super CO power, depending of the line he say before activating it it will crash your game. Thankfully, opening the game again restart you to before you end your turn, and they seems to say a different vojceline that doesn't trigger the crash.
Lol true though. They have enough brainpower to make Bowser pay them 30% of his earnings for life but for simple online functionalities, the know squat
For the price it's mediocre at best. While you do get 2 games for the price of one, updated visuals and art style, it's not enough to entice me to purchase the game again. I played the og 1 & 2 and finished it both. The final battle for 2 was such a good challenge.

My only problem is the price (and totk release 😂)
This one was definitely worth the $60 price tag. Two amazing classics with loads of content improved in every way possible imo. Now I'm just hoping that the two DS games get a similar remake.
Waited for you guys to review this for me to purchase. Will have to see, loved it back in the day!
I'm wondering if it's the potential length of any single game which put off Nintendo from allowing you to 'play online against a random'.
One of my favorite Gba games , I put 100s of hours into all 3 of these titles...for a real good challenge its good to try and beat the game on the hardest setting..stunning game.
I love the CO cartoon style, but I wish it was used on the battle map as well
Me too!
4:07 does anyone know if the design map is limited to a 15 by 10 area because that only 1/4 the size of the original game. Also does anyone know if all maps are smaller now
Incredible game and value. Played local muiltiplayer with a couple buddies who have never played it and they both immediately bought copies.
This should have been $40’s not $60
My issue is Wargroove is so much cheaper and pretty much the same (Wargroove is now £8 locally)
Ill wait for a sale. $60 for 2 games ive played multiple times just isnt worth it to me.
Imma get this one someday too! 😋
I SO love these games but I can't get into the new art style :( Maybe if they become cheaper I'd pick it up
*yarrr*
I pre ordered it with a coupon, besides Tears of the Kingdom, & I love it. :) Beautiful game.
"There is a deep and challenging game under the surface" @7:31 - proceeds to have a submarine dive underwater xD
Definitely grabbing this one soon! I hope we get the other Advance Wars games at some point too.
You’re probably thinking about Nintendo other war games in this series. These are the only two gameboy advance wars games.
I want a third game, but I’d easily take a remaster/re-release of the first two games as well
Besides nostalgia of the original version set aside would you say this is better than War Groove?
I'd say so!
1. In War Groove two units will always have the same stats regardless of who you play with.
In Adcance Wars units' stats differ from cammander to commander.
2. In my opinion maps are more fun in Advance Wars.
That price is out of my league.
are you guys reviewing Trinity trigger?
I must have this. I MUST! 😋
Another one I been waiting to hear about!
I live in Canada and they're charging $80 for this? Metroid prime was only $60.
I'd still buy this but getting the short stick stings as usual.
Been waiting for this one. I'm not fussed about online so that honestly doesn't bother me, but hope it drops in price at some point as that is a little steep. Will definitely be picking it up at some point though.
Is this worth getting if you have Wargrove? I don't have any affinity to this brand, but I did enjoy Wargrove which looks newer and cleaner than this
Personally as someone who has both (Wargroove both on PC and Switch so I have played quite a bit), they are different enough for you to enjoy them both in a different way.
I was scared of that too as It had been years since I tried It in the GBA and Game design has come a long way, But It is still brilliant
I'd say so!
In Advance Wars unit's stats differ between commanders. So not only do commanders have different super powers, their units have different ranges, attack and defense too.
Might get this if I find a good physical deal! I actually think I have a copy of the GBA original lying somewhere.
Yeah the gameplay is top notch. Glen
Would have loved to have seen the ability to switch between old and new graphics, something which was done very well in the halo series remasters.
i loved advanced wars series though my fav one was advanced wars dual strike, way more cos to choose from my only wish is that they remake that and bring some of the cooler units from days of ruin and add them into the mix then ill be complete XD now my only thing that really is a negative in my opinion was the sound from units for example aa units, some tanks, battle ships as well as artillery things that should sound soooo cool just was lacking that oomph ya know i wish they at least made a setting for unit sounds thats adjustable so maybe for those like me who wanna hear more of the units firing at eachother a bit louder :)
My only gripe is they didn't remade the AW2 intro. That is my favourite intro.
Loved the Advance War series on GBA. I am enjoying the latest version but I am a bit mixed on the updated visuals.
Everything looks great but the full price is what prevents me from buying it
I never played Advance Wars 1 and 2, but I did play Advance Wars: Dual Strike on the 3DS and I loved that - but these games kinda feel like a step backwards... I'd be all in for a remake of or sequel to Dual Strike, of course...
Love the dovetail joints on the corners of the board... nice little "tabletop" touch
Bit of a mish mash graphically, looks really crisp, but I kinda miss the GBA pixel art
Yeah, me too! Glen
@@kubo5185
Yeah that sounds more accurate. Honestly that's one of the reasons why I'm not buying as many games for my switch.
Always look forward to your videos, even if it's not a game I'm interested in.
Can we get battalion wars too?
Appreciate the review. No offense intended but the accent is tough for me to understand
I used to love this series back in GameBoy Advanced. This makes me happy. Such a great franchise
I like tactics games likes this. Cute and mind stimulating. On my wishlist you go! ❤
I played both the old ones and the remakes on my switch and I can honestly say after about half an hour with both I went with the new versions , I'll take the pretty new graphics anyday over the old ones
I would love a Famicom and Super Famicom wars remake
Good game. Just pick up and play when I can. But fighting backlog and xbc3 dlc comes
Is this cartoon Risk/Axis & Allies?
Except the online mode it's a very good remake.
Why does Hachi have to remind you he has a shop after every single mission ?
I really miss the old style animation. It’s looked so much better plus you could tell which units were on the map!! The black hole army units and planes look too similar
imagine paying a sub for ninty's online services and they remake such a game without adding online matchmaking.
i know the game's fun but it looks like a cheap phone game
As good as a game that I was expecting. I just hope that they also release the other ones if not give us a new one.
Is it just me, or is Grit (the sniper character) a parody of Lee Harvey Oswald (a Southerner who defected to Russia from America, though Oswald himself later returned to America before taking out Kennedy but he probably did that on orders from the CIA not Russia)?
It is what it is, and it is what it was +1
glad this finally came out! will pick it up after I beat zelda!
The West never got Famicom Wars lines of games until Advance Wars. Now, AW1+2RBC is ONLY released on THE WEST. There is no planned release for Asian market including Japan as of now.
Yeah, plus the original AW 1 and 2 didn't release in Japan until years after too. Glen
Would you recommend this game for a beginner of the series?
Yes absolutely!
99% of western Advance Wars fans started with these two games back in the day so you're not missing anything by getting this remake.
@@zimon85 Have you played the game Wargroove? I heard it was similar but cheaper. Thinking if i should try that game before advance wars?
@@Astronic that is a good idea actually if you are unsure! They do play similarly but personally I prefer Advance Wars.
Not that Wargroove is bad or anything. I just like Advance Wars more.
This game and Zelda make it really tempting to use that $100 voucher for two games and save some money.
The price is high at this point. Wait for a discount. The graphics are a bit boring, could be better.
I prefer the original theme songs. they just sound richer
Nintendo get you're online shit together
Lol true though. They have enough brainpower to make Bowser pay them 30% of his earnings for life but for simple online functionalities, the know squat
I feel they should have went the Mario maker route and let you upload your maps for others to down load, play and rate.
I am loving this game so much. So fun.
As someone who enjoys modern tabletop gaming, the visuals don’t bother me.
I have always seen strategy games as a "me" game, so I don't mind no online co-op.
For the price it's mediocre at best. While you do get 2 games for the price of one, updated visuals and art style, it's not enough to entice me to purchase the game again.
I played the og 1 & 2 and finished it both. The final battle for 2 was such a good challenge.
Just seems a bit pricey
