- I was so happy to hear him talk to us.
really beautiful stuff...
It was incredible to hear his softer side, with la mer, gone still, and the fragile in a line
"Can you hear me? About 10 years ago or so I locked myself away in a house on the ocean, and I tried to… I said I was trying to write music. Some of which wound up on The Fragile. But what I was really doing was trying to kill myself. And the whole time I was away by myself, I managed to write one song, which is this song. So when I play it I feel pretty weird about it, because it takes me back to a pretty dark and awful time in my life. It's weird to think how different things are now: I'm still alive, I haven't died yet. And I'm afraid to go back to that place because it feels kind of haunted to me, but I'm going to go back. I'm going to get married there."
Trent: "I was trying to kill myself" some one in the public: "YEEEEAAAAHHHH WOOOOOH"
I think often about how we could have lost Trent like so many other artists. Twenty one pilots have a song called Neon Gravestones which, abridged, makes a point about shifting the perspective on suicide, about finding people dedicated to life and appreciating that, rather than glorifying the act of suicide and putting people on a pedestal only after the fact. If Trent had died like that, I'm sure his legacy would have been different, maybe more people would have known his work. But actually... To see him thriving, with a family, still going strong now... That is the sort of thing that should be celebrated. Someone who overcame, so far, the pressures of fame and success, and attention. We are lucky to still have him around, and it is priceless to have someone to look to who went through hell and chose to live. This is not to shame those who didn't, but it's the glorification by the media that is the problem, and as Tyler Joseph said in that song I mentioned, the fact that some may then be misguided to see suicide as a weapon to teach people a lesson, to lash out against the pain they're feeling, based on the way it is reported on after the fact. So I look to Trent and see the pain in his music, and the fact he's still here, and I know it is possible to fight through it and to survive. That depression isn't always a death sentence.
I just wanted to say I cried for an entire hour after Chris Cornell died. He was so talented and left such a beautiful family behind. It would’ve been amazing to see some of his further body of work. Chris Cornell was a brilliant and talented artist and human being. However I can never and will never forgive him for being that impulsive. I really wish he asked someone for help.
Neon gravestones is a perfect example for this. Thank you for using it :)
Nothing can stop us now
brilliantly said
Eloquently stated.
This is one of the most moving things I've ever seen. Thank you, Trent for being such an inspiring human being.
People like Trent are living proof there's something out there that cares about humanity.
Michael Pau Yeah, it's called love.
Michael Pau Not god.
Maybe a little bit of both.
I feel so honored to have not only seen Trent and NIN so many times, but to have been at this particular show....me and my friend were basically front row in the crowd, and his words left me in tears as they went right into one of the most emotional and personal songs for me as a fan, and apparently for Trent as well...what a special show that was :) incredible performance. That was also the day I met Trent and the boys. Truly a great day in my life that I will always treasure. thanks for posting this!
+iamryanallen I'm dying of jealousy over here
I was there too. Epic on so many levels for me. I was with a guy I was in love with and I planned on telling him that night. I remember watching Trent during this song and I was under his spell and pulled into his world. I was Fkin frozen in time. I was relieved from my own thoughts and fears in telling my truth I never did tell the guy I loved him and we remain close friends till today both feeling blessed to have been at this show.
@@collequ Why let a good thing pass you by? One can only hope that their GF/BF Husband/Wife is also their Best Friend.
*TRENT: i was trying to kill myself...*
*AUDIENCE: YEEEAAAHH! WOOOO!!*
"La mer" is my favorite song because of this reason. It's such a personal and deep song, up there with "Hurt", but there's such a haunting tone to the fact he wrote it when he was at the lowest point in his life. And he still pushed forward despite everything.
Mad respects to Trent.
I would like this a million time if I could. Trent Reznor has such passion in everything he writes. From Pretty Hate Machine, to Ghosts, to The Slip, to his work with Atticus Ross....everything he does is beautiful.
this piece is LITERALLY ripped off from YES's "South Side Of The Sky"...of the album FRAGILE.
(While NIN's piece is off their album THE FRAGILE, hmmmm!)

@@dumpygoodness4086 I don't really hear it.
Even ugly things become beautiful
The intro piece alone is sublime enough.
What a beautiful song to have come from such a “dark and awful time”. This is one of my all time favorite NIИ songs. You are a music genius, Mr. Reznor

"And I’m afraid to go back to that place because it feels kind of haunting to me, but I’m going to go back. I’m going to get married there."
I guess he "Came Back Haunted" XD
lmao i said the same thing to myself
For anyone that didn't grow up in the 90s, Trent made real art/poetry/music. And we miss it!
Luckily he's still making great music.
I would be crying my eyes out if I was there during that speech and song... omg
It's a really touching speech, and a wonderful song
Ironic.the place where he could've met his end in one of the most painful times in his life he made the place of his happiest memory and best day.
Zero dislikes so far. No one could ever dislike this video. Trent is a gem of a person!!!
Sreenadh S ; pls don't do that. I did enjoy the video but : After having read your comment I experienced a strong impulse to tap👎. I had to figuratively fight back the AssHole inside me.
@@arflores2 Haha :D
Damnit, who tapped the dislike?
Wow. So glad he was able to write this song and choose to LIVE ON.
Kinda wish people wouldn't cheer when he mentions having suicidal thoughts.
Seriously... I was a bit confused. Like, they realize there’s a bit more to that sentence, right..?
sameeee like why are they cheering at something so dark and tragic
I have heard there can be some drug use at concerts. They could have been cheering the imaginary little elephants with wings flying overhead of the crowd and didn't hear a word trent was saying :).
I suspect that those who were cheering then were people who could identify with that feeling. They were saying, in effect, “yeah man, I’ve felt like that too!”
always loved this song, had no idea
Thanks Trent, thank you for staying here. We need you still
this is the clearest video of the speech on youtube, congrats!
Don’t ever delete this video ❤ it’s too important
I'm thankful for being GA at this show and for hearing this....his demons didn't kill him just like mine didn't keep kill me
Ahhhhh, the sea! Side note-France is a wonderfully artistic and strange old world place! If you can get the language then it's possible to find a very cool and nice place in the world but " The Sea" or La Mer is my fav song and this Lil story by TR was cool!(2da point) When the drummer kicks in this song it's very powerful with that bass line! Wow 9IN is the shit! Oh and don't ever forget Finkeinstien on the guitar
Adding texters of pure beauty over the top! If you saw this lineup, this tour, your indeed lucky and better off for it!
This song never fails to make me break out in tears...
Good for him he went back to that place and did an amazing performance!!! 👏👏👏👏
NIN live from a TIE-Fighter hangar in the Imperial Deathstar
The mother of my kid just killed herself at the beach last month. Watching this video & the story always captured her in a way, so we'd play it while driving trying to find a spot to park to take our kid to swim and play in the sand. It's a hard listen, but I choose it not to be.
That's beautiful mate, hope all is well with you, and she's watching over you two always
This video is blessed
Awh, I'm actually in tears here
What a special moment this is
he's come so far despite all that
Happy 24 years to the greatest song ever created
Same thing happened to me, first lockdown, all alone, away from home, sad, depressed. A girl came into my life and kinda saved me for about two years, but now she’s gone, she was a nice illusion and now I’m alone again, same thoughts, same place, alone. In a couple of weeks it will be 3 years ago. I hope I will be able to overcome this.
I've been there, several times over. Met someone I thought I'd be spending my life with, only to have it fall apart leaving me wondering if I could ever find it again. Well I did find it again, and I know you can too. just keep your head up, feet moving forward, and never give up, you'll find the right one
@@pawberryjam thanks bro’, really appreciated your words.
I hope you are doing better, now.
thanks for posting
Only reason I still walk this dark planet❤
I love this man
I was at this show. I can't wait to see them on the 20th in Boston
"...but I was really trying to kill myself"
Oh fuck...
Head like a hole seems like the natural progression from here.
This is beautiful!
Favorite song
How could anyone be talking at the beginning? 🤨 just saying
this is garbage compared to the shows they play for this album in 1999
yup I remember apc opening for them on that tour was one of the best shows ever
Love you Trent 💙
