"¿Pueden oírme? Hace unos 10 años más o menos, me encerré lejos en una casa en el océano, y traté de ... dije que estaba tratando de escribir música. Algunas de las cuales terminaron en "The Fragile". Pero lo que realmente estaba intentando era matarme. Y todo el tiempo que estuve fuera de mí mismo, me las arreglé para escribir una canción, que es esta. Así que cuando la interpreto me siento bastante raro, porque me lleva de vuelta una época bastante oscura y terrible de mi vida. Es extraño pensar cómo las cosas son diferentes ahora: todavía estoy vivo, no he muerto todavía, y tengo miedo de volver a ese lugar porque se siente como que me persigue, pero yo voy a regresar. Me voy a casar allí. "

Reznor dice algo así: "...La Mer fue escrita en un mal momento de mi vida, que fue destinado a sentirse como caminar dentro del océano y auto extinguirse, sin miedo. Pero ahora se siente distinto, lo opuesto a eso, se siente como una redención en cierta forma".

En la versión del disco Denise Milfort susurra las siguientes palabras en francés:
Et il est un jour arrivé, Marteler le ciel , Et marteler la mer, Et la mer avait embrassé moi, Et la délivré moi de ma caille,
Rien ne peut m'arrêter maintenant.
Traduciendo la letra en ingles que aparece en la letras oficiales seria:
Y cuando llegue el día, me convertiré en el cielo, Y me convertiré en el mar, y el mar vendrá a besarme, Puesto que estoy dirigiéndome a casa, nada podrá detenerme ahora.
Pero si hacemos una traducción más literal de la letra en francés diría algo más o menos así:

Y el mar me abrazará, y me llevara a casa.

Wow so sorry to hear about your loss. My boyfriend was so talented with synthesizers that he played a lot of the fragile song’s and of course we went to the fragility tour in Orlando Florida. Anyway he is now gone and I miss him so much. Trent got his shit getting clean & still getting better and better. Unfortunately my boyfriend didn’t and he got bad on h and fentanyl killed him! 😢and it suck’s because I will never hear his voice( again)! Or be able to talk about machine’s of loving grace.. or Tool..etc!

This song gets nowhere near the love it deserves...first song written for the record, actually...complete with classic, melodramatic NIN story about Reznor, alone in some expensive beach house overlooking the cliifs, contemplating his own death while slouched over a grand piano, tinkling out these notes from the keys...ahh, ya gotta love it! It's also my favorite use of his famous 'motifs' technique...certain songs on certain albums, the inclusions end up feeling a bit forced, but the bassline here is such a shocking-yet-integrated transition, that when it returns later as the centerpiece of "Into The Void", the jaw just drops...a truly brilliant musical moment.
This just made my day.

By far the best version. Actually one of my favorite songs live played ever.

Totally agree! The tour was spectacular.
As a young man waking up from a hot mess of a life of my own foolish design, this song hit something for me. It became a representation of my growth from a place of hurt and anger to my bounce back from a bottom that I barely remember now. Thank you for that.
I use to watch this concert some times 3 times a day. Miss them days.

When the piano kicks in, you feel it in your soul. Just a devastating melody that strikes so many different emotions. Incredible art.

Jeez. A. A. T. C. H. B. is brilliant, fantastic, & amazing, there are NO 'filler' songs, Trent Reznor is a genius, listen to any of their other albums, they are ALL incredible.

This is definitely the best instrumental piece off of The Fragile, in my opinion.
